Breda Raggett

IWAS involved in a conversation the other day and the discussion was centred on

people nowadays saying please or thanks.

Saying please and thanks is very much tied up with respect, respect for yourself and for others. Respect has to be earned. If you are not respectful of other people, including children and young people, how can we expect them to respect us. Saying please and thanks was very much part of our upbringing and you were frowned upon if you didn’t comply, in fact if you made a request for something without saying please, you didn’t get it.

I have been very conscious of people’s manners since then and have been taking note in diff erent situations. I found in particular that staff in supermarkets, post offi ces, butchers, chemists, hairdressers, banks and doctors’ surgeries, have been very friendly, courteous and helpful.

The response you get from people is usually as a result of how you treat them. People who

work in these places are human and like to be respected.

Everybody can have an off day and may not be in the best of humour, but it is unfair to take it out on others.

I have spoken to staff who work in the public eye. They told me that on the whole people are very nice to deal with, but on occasions they come across customers who are arrogant and ignorant. It is very diffi cult to deal with rude people who can be unreasonable no matter how nice you are.

Everyone deserves to be appreciated and saying please and thanks can makes the world a much nicer place. We all like to be appreciated. A lot of people take young children and teenagers for granted and forget to say please and thanks.

How can we expect to have mannerly children if we don’t behave in a mannerly way towards them? We should remember that young people are observant and receptive.

Thank you for reading.

Review of A Family Scandal by Zoe Miller - Escaping the family secret

IT STARTED at the weekend and will continue for 10 weeks, every Saturday at 6pm.

A new series of hour-long programmes is presented on KCLR by renowned Irish songwriter and musician Philip Donnelly.

The series should satisfy the appetite of those who have ever thought about how songs are written, what songs mean and what came first, the lyric or the melody?

Listeners to local radio station, KCLR, will hear some of our leading songwriters speak about their craft.

Those who like a good tune and entertaining conversation should make a date with radio every Saturday tea time.

Called Full Circle – the Irish Songwriter, the programmes feature conversations punctuated with song, in the company of Declan O’Rourke who talks about writing his hit song Galileo, John Spillane who sings the Bank of Ireland Sean Nos Blues and Republic of Loose Mick Pyro who performs a seven-minute rap.

Eleanor McEvoy, Mick Flannery, Liam Ó Maonlai, Mick Hanley, Mundy, The Lost Brothers and John Prine who is married to an Irish

woman, holds and Irish passport and is a regular visitor to these shores, are the other featured artists who were recorded at the Set Theatre.

The series is funded by the Sound and Vision Scheme run by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

The programmes also provide an education in the evolution of musical genres under host Philip Donnelly, a Dublin-born musician known as the Clontarf Cowboy who during the 1970s and 80s blazed a trail for Irish musicians in the US and around the world. performing and recording with legends Johnny Cash, the Everley Brothers, Donovan and John Prine.

“I’ve always wanted to do a radio show and I’m very excited to be working with KCLR ” Philip told The Reporter. Philip has played on over 1,000 studio tracks and his career brought him to Hollywood and Nashville. His writing credits include ‘Living in these Troubled Times’

‘Full Circle’ demonstrates KCLR’s commitment to supporting Irish music, according to John Purcell, CEO at the Station. John also produced the series.

FILM ChronicleDirector Josh Trank

This fresh take on the superhero movie is the best of it’s kind since ‘Kick Ass’

and will please both fans of comics and teen movies alike. It tells of the abused son of a drunken father and dying mother who is bullied at school and excluded socially by girls. His only friend is his cousin who reluctantly hangs out with him while trying to fl irt with girls at raves with philosophical statements. It is at one of these parties that they discover a hole in the ground where a strange glowing object gives them special powers. As they discover the extent of their gifts they soon start to fi ght it out over their new responsibilities. How they tell this fi lm is what sets it apart. They use the hackneyed technique of ‘found footage’ to reveal the story but deploy it in a very original way. People will recognize this technique from ‘Cloverfi eld’ and ‘Blair Witch’ where we only learn what is going on from the point of view of the

cameras the characters use within the fi lm. This gives the extraordinary more realism and while at times it can be a little contrived how they shoehorn in a new perspective it still makes the audience feel this is actually happening. It also works as a parable of the horror of adolescence who have always been drawn to damaged teens in comic book stories since this refl ects their own angst and wish to be powerful. This is a very severe take on this- at times the lead character evokes the Columbine killers, at others the more likeable side of Norman Bates in ‘Psycho’. His abuse at the hands of his father and bullies at school is not treated in that cliched way it usually is and you feel sympathy for his rage when it fi nally explodes. There are also some fi ne action sequences which belie the low budget of this fascinating movie which sets itself up nicely for a sequel at the end. One of the most exciting franchises to emerge recently and equal to the British TV series ‘Misfi ts’ which it is deeply indebted to. -DARRAGH BYRNE
