These activities should be carried out before the visit to KidZania in your classroom.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• To explore the skills required to be ready for the world of work.. • To assess preferences and aptitudes for different careers.• To develop ambitions and recognising that different careers require different skills and training.• To analyse natural ability versus learning and training to develop their skills.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• All students will be able to recognise that different careers require different skills and training. • Most students will also know how different careers are achieved through subject preferences

and training plans.• Some students will have also thought about the skills and attitudes that they need for different

jobs and that different jobs require different amounts of training and time to achieve.

NATIONAL CURRICULUM LINKS

English Pupils should use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas.

Maths Pupils should develop their use of formal mathematical knowledge to interpret and solveproblems,includinginfinancialmathematics.

Careers Pupils shoudl undertake a realistic self-assessment of their achievements, qualities, aptitudes and abilities and present this in an appropriate format.

Careers Pupils should recognise that work is more than paid employment and that there is considerable variations in the value individuals and scoiety attach to different kinds of work.

P.H.S.E. Pupils should have the knowledge and skills needed for setting realsitic and challenging personal targets and goals.

P.H.S.E Pupils should know that there are different types of work, including employment, self-employment and voluntary work; that everyone has a ‘career’ which is their pathway through life, education and work..

KS3 – KIDZANIA PRE-VISIT LESSON PLAN

INTRODUCTION

The lesson content acts as an introduction to your visit to KidZania as well as meeting the key aims of Careers Guidance, the P.H.S.E. Programme of Study and the Maths and English Curriculum. The resources will inspire students to plan their visit to KidZania and use the visit as a stepping stone into choosing subject options to support career aspirations in the future. The resources will encourage children toutiliseavarietyofanalyticalskillsandconfirmtheirunderstandingofthekeyprinciples of skills development in line with curriculum standards.

Theseactivitiesaredesignedtohelpyourstudentstoreflectonandappreciatethelearn, earn and spend fun and interest in the KidZania experience and to begin to evaluate their own aptitudes.

There are two lessons which are one hour each.

KS3 – KIDZANIA PRE-VISIT LESSON PLAN

LESSON 1

Starter Explain to the students that they are going to be looking at themselves in the future. You want them to begin to think about what they will do when they leave school and pursue a career. They will be going to KidZania, that has a range of different careers they can try.

15 mins Powerpoint slide 2 A visit to KidZania helps students to realise their ambitions — what they would like to do in their working life in the future. Their visit will give them a taster of different careers available and will develop their ambition to achieve their goals and dreams. It will help them to make informed choices when considering GCSE options, by creating a link between subjects, skills and career preferences.

Powerpoint slide 3 Begin by asking the students to thought shower all the different job roles that they know, including jobs held by family members and carers. Ask what kind of skills and abilities they think are required to carry out those jobs?

15 mins Powerpoint slide 4 Personality Analysis Worksheet Explain to the students that they are going to be thinking about themselves and their skills and abilities. They are going to create their ownpersonalityprofileandgetreadyfortheirvisittoKidZania.Ask thestudentstofillouttheworksheettobegintounderstandtheir preferences and skills.

20 mins Powerpoint slide 5-6 Learning Journey Planning Worksheet Activities Matrix Explain to the students that they are going to think about what job they would like in the future and what they need to do to achieve their careergoals.AskthestudentstofillintheLearningJourneyPlanning Worksheet to take to KidZania to allow students to decide on some activities before they arrive. They can use the Activities Matrix to help them.

5 mins PLENARY Ask students to share the KidZania activities that they are most excited about. Remind them that KidZania is a place that they can learn, earn and spend.
