Queenstown - You’ll never run out of things to do here but you may run out of time! With breathtaking scenery, activities and festivals, the ski scene, restaurants, shopping and wineries, this lakeside alpine resort rates as one of the world’s top destinations for all ages and seasons. Just 19 km away, the old-world ambience of Arrowtown, on the bank of the once gold-laden Arrow River, is also a must-visit.

Wanaka - A perfect year-round holiday spot on the shore of Lake Wanaka with magnificent valleys, mountains and glaciers on its doorstep. Wanaka offers stunning scenery and a laid-back feel. Winter activities include jet boating, Monster Truck riding and the famous Puzzling World, as well as a choice of resorts for skiing and snowboarding.

Fiordland - Milford and Doubtful Sounds are just a short trip from Te Anau, the gateway to the Fiordland National Park. The lakeside town of Te Anau bustles with accommodation and restaurants, and is the perfect base from where to explore the glowworm caves, nearby Lake Manapouri and the rugged wonders of Fiordland.

KIDZ GO provides everything you need for making the most of your Southern Lakes holiday. You’ll find sections on accommodation, activities, dining and shopping, all with families in mind. Our maps will show you the best walks and playgrounds. Find out what you can do for free and how to keep everyone sane when it rains! 12 The Snow Scene :: Mountain Transport

This section gives you the low down on access roads and transport options. With the exception of Coronet Peak, the ski field access roads are unsealed. If you’re not comfortable with fitting chains or mountain driving in snow or icy conditions, you’ll be far better off letting someone else drive you to the slopes. If you’re driving, remember to always drive to the conditions, carry warm clothing, food, water, blankets, chains, a shovel, first aid kit, and keep your petrol tank full.

Mountain Transport

MOUNTAIN ACCESS ROADS

CARDRONA The Crown Range is the shortest route between Queenstown and Wanaka, but the winding road requires great care in snow or icy conditions. It is sealed but very twisty and steep in parts. The Cardrona ski field access road is unsealed. You are able to park very close to base if you arrive early. Courtesy car park shuttle available.

CORONET PEAK 9km of good, sealed access road. Car parks fill up quickly so be prepared for a 5 minute walk or catch the courtesy car park shuttle.

THE REMARKABLES 13km of steep, unsealed access road. Parking generally very close to base building.

TREBLE CONE The access road is fairly short and unsealed. Parking close to base building.

THE SNOW PARK NZ Take the Crown Range road to the Cardrona Valley. The access road is well-graded but unsealed, about 13km.

CHAINS Our ski areas often require chains to be carried as conditions can change drastically during the day. Watch for signs indicating the state of the road ahead and whether it is necessary to fit chains. Chains can be bought at most petrol stations, or hired locally from Queenstown Bike Hire, Lakefront (03 442 6039).

What's a jet boat?

Unlike a conventional propeller-driven boat, a

jet boat utilises an internal propeller (impeller),

drawing water up through an inlet in the bottom

of the boat and driving it with great force through

a moveable nozzle at the rear. This allows the jet

boat to travel in water only inches deep, and it

is so manoeuvrable it can perform a 360⁰ turn in

position.

The jet boat’s uses worldwide vary from

passenger ferries to military and coastguard

craft. Yet it was invented right here in the ‘50s

by Bill ‘Mad Irishman’ Hamilton, a farmer and

self-taught engineer. He devised it as a means of

getting around his Canterbury farm via shallow

rivers without the propellers hitting rocks.

Just over a decade later the world’s first tourist

jet boat operation commenced in Queenstown.

Lord of The RingsIf you’ve seen the movies, here’s your chance to transport yourself to the fantasy of ‘Middle-earth’. Queenstown, Arrowtown and Glenorchy are home to many scenes from the trilogy.

HORSE RIDING DART STABLES, GLENORCHY Min age 7The Ride of the Rings Be transported to Middle-earth astride your own steed! First drive the shores of Lake Wakatipu, passing Ithilien and stopping en-route to marvel at the Misty Mountains. Your 1½ hour horse ride begins from Paradise, winding through the golden woods of Lothlórien, passing Amon Hen, then the track opens up into the Golden Mile. From here the views over Isengard, the Wizard’s Vale and the mighty peak of Methedras are breathtaking. This is probably the most scenic horse ride in the world, and the ride of a lifetime for ‘Rings’ fans. FILMING FACTS

* Director Peter Jackson took 18 months to film the

trilogy, Lord of the Rings.

* 15,000 extras were required, to play the parts of

orcs, goblins and other creatures.

* No two orcs are alike - each of the 200 orc heads

were individually shaped and implanted with

yak hair, woven strand by strand to create different

hairstyles!

* 250 horses were used in the making of the movies,

some from Dart Stables, in Glenorchy.

GlenorchyGlenorchy sits at the northern tip of Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by mountains, glacier-fed rivers and beech forest. It’s the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and the starting point for multi-day treks, including the famous Routeburn Walk. With only 200 locals and Mount Aspiring National Park on its doorstep, this really is a slice of paradise!

Getting to Glenorchy The 45km lakeside drive offers breathtaking views of Lake Wakatipu, hanging valleys and sheer mountains. Stop at the Bennetts Bluff lookout (on the left, 25kms from Queenstown) for an amazing view and an excellent photo opportunity.Activities Take a Lord of the Rings tour (see above), splash through streams on horseback, jet boat the Dart River, visit the quirky Possum Fur shop, and generally soak up the essence of Paradise. Walks Plenty of local walks can be enjoyed by families, from the easy one hour lagoon walk, to exploring the start of one of the many multi-day walking tracks. See local information centres for maps and track information.

Arrowtown Millennium Walk Easy - 1 hr returnStart from the carpark in Ramshaw Lane, centre of Arrowtown. Follow the Arrow River along the flat to the outskirts of Arrowtown. Cross the bridge and return most of the way along the other side, crossing a bridge once more and finishing in the carpark.

Sawpit Gully Hard - 3 hour loopThis is a favourite walk of ours - it’s a loop through diverse scenery; cross streams, walk through pockets of beech forest and traverse tussuck-covered slopes, following the track in the direction of Macetown and the goldmining regions of old. See the stone relic of a miner’s hut and descend along a water race to the Arrow River, before following the path along the river bank and back into Arrowtown.

Chinese Settlement Easy - ½ hr to 1hrIn 1865 the Chinese were invited to come and mine the goldfields around the Arrow Gorge. They built and lived in around 20 huts that have been restored and these offer one of the region’s most vivid insights into life during the goldrush.

Wanaka is a perfect year-round family destination situated on the shores of Lake Wanaka (New Zealand’s fourth

largest lake) with magnificent valleys, mountains and glaciers on its doorstep – many of them accessible on foot. Take in the breathtaking views with a road tour and stop for a scenic walk (see p51). Other activities include skiing and snowboarding, jet boating, horseriding, the famous Puzzling World and a world unique adventure ride park! There are also snow hire and retail stores (see our recommendations page 17) and plenty of places to eat out.Did you know ... Wanaka used to be called Pembroke, after a British Colonial Secretary, and was only renamed Wanaka in 1940. Wanaka is an altered form of Oanaka - meaning ‘place of Anaka’ in Māori (Anaka was an early Māori chief ).

Named for the 14 fiords that carve into its western coastline, Fiordland is the work of over 500 million years of constant sculpting. Fiordland contains some of the most dramatic scenery in the world, including Milford and Doubtful Sounds and the Milford and Kepler Great Walks.

At 12,000 square kilometres, Fiordland is New Zealand’s largest National Park and has been designated a World Heritage Area for its unique landscapes.

TE anAU is a perfect place to ‘stay and play’ for a few days while exploring Fiordland National Park. Situated on the shores of Lake Te Anau only 2 hours drive from Queenstown, this lively and pretty lakeside community bustles with cafés, shops, accommodation (see page 65) and lots of things to see and do. Te Anau is the nearest town to Milford and Doubtful Sounds as well as having the famous Milford and Kepler Great Walks on its doorstep.

The name Te Anau is of Maori origin (Te Ana-au), meaning ‘rushing waters in a cave’ and Te Anau’s actual caves were lost in Maori legend until being rediscovered by a European explorer in the 1940s. At 12,000 years old, they are relatively young and are still being formed by water action. These days they’re famous for the glowworm grotto deep inside.

Places of InterestMirror Lakes A five minute walk alongside these pools is well worth it and on a still day the reflections are quite stunning.Pop's View Lookout A viewing platform overlooks the Hollyford Valley - one of the most spectacular panoramas of the drive.Homer Tunnel This incredible feat of workmanship cuts 1200 metres through the Darren Mountains. Both the entrance and exit to the tunnel provide awe-inspiring views. The Chasm A 20 minute return bush walk; the Chasm itself, with its huge volume of water pounding over incredible rock formations, is mesmerising.

Important things to remember: ✔ Fuel up in Te Anau before you head to Milford Sound as this is the last fuel stop. ✔ Milford Road is a scenic highway and driving speeds vary as people take in the views. Please be courteous to other drivers by pulling over at safe sites and allowing queued traffic to pass.✔ WARNING! The road to Milford Sound is an Alpine Route. It is compulsory to carry snow chains on this route in winter. For road information see www.milfordroad.co.nz

Described by Rudyard Kipling as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’, Milford Sound is one of the jewels in the Fiordland crown. It’s actually a fiord – created by rivers of glacial ice and flanked on both sides by sheer rock face, rising up to awe-inspiring heights. An experience on the Sound

is enhanced by the abundance of wildlife; fur seals, rare Fiordland Crested penguins and bottlenose dolphins. About Milford Sound (Piopiotahe)First settled in 1877, the original route to Milford weaved around the Darran Mountains and over the McKinnon Pass. This track is now known as the Milford Track (approx. 52km long). It was the only way to enter Milford other than via the sea. Milford Sound is 16km long and it rains approximately 180 days a year, with an average annual rainfall of over 6½ metres!Drive TimesQueenstown to Milford Sound 4½ hours Te Anau to Milford Sound 2½ hoursWanaka to Milford Sound 5½ hoursThere are plenty of tour options. Tours include a cruise and depart from Queenstown, Wanaka and Te Anau. Coaching or driving both ways from Queenstown makes for a 12 hour day, so you may want to break up the journey in Te Anau. Real Journeys also run overnight cruises (mid Sept – May) with family cabins available.

Trip OptionsCoach-Cruise-Coach The road to Milford Sound is one of the most stunning in NZ. There is nothing quite as awe-inspiring as the approach to the Homer Tunnel and there are plenty of viewpoints along the way.Fly-Cruise-Fly Take a 30 to 40 minute flight over glaciers, lakes & waterfalls. Weather dependent so book early to avoid missing out. Flights depart Queenstown, Wanaka and Te Anau. Fly-Cruise-Coach or Coach-Cruise-Fly This is the ultimate trip! (it’s around 7½ hours return from Queenstown). Take the coach first as it only gives commentary and photo stops on the journey in.Drive Yourself See map this page for this spectacular 121km stretch of road. Cruises can be purchased before you leave, in Te Anau, or when you get to Milford Sound.

Homer Tunnel - did you know?i The Homer Tunnel is a road tunnel in Fiordland linking Milford Sound to Te Anau and Queenstown.i Milford Sound was inaccessible by road until 1953 when the Homer Tunnel was completed. The tunnel through the Darran Mountain Range took over 20 years to build.i The tunnel, at 945 metres above sea level, is 1.2km long and has a steep gradient down towards Milford Sound.

i In 2003 the Homer Nude Tunnel run was introduced. Each year on 1st April, the race involves nearly a hundred keen competitors racing naked through the tunnel!

The Route to Doubtful Sound

Manapouri Only 20 minutes drive from Te Anau, the township nestles beside what’s renowned as New Zealand’s most beautiful lake. The lake is dotted with over 30 small islands covered in native bush and accessible by boat. Originally called Roto-au (the rainy lake) by early Maori and then Moturau (many islands), this lake is the second deepest in New Zealand.Lake Manapouri is the gateway to Doubtful Sound and the Kepler Track. Manapouri itself is a tranquil township with family dining at Café 23 and a variety of accommodation options and holiday homes.

Fiordland : : Doubtful Sound F

www.KidzGo.co.nz

Doubtful Sound Captain James Cook sighted the entrance to Doubtful Sound on his first voyage to New Zealand in 1770. He called it Doubtful Harbour and didn’t enter because he was doubtful about whether he would be able to turn around and exit back to sea. Moody and mysterious, it is often known as the ‘Sound of Silence’. It’s a staggering 10 times bigger than Milford Sound and home to fur seals, Fiordland Crested penguins and dolphins.
