November brings newborn vampires, disenfranchised video game villains, and a boy in a boat with a Bengal Tiger. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s

new in theaters and on DVD and blu-ray this month.WRECK-IT RALPH Not yet rated; like PG. In theaters 11/02. Ok for kids 7+. Reel Preview: 3.5 out of 5 Reels. http://disney.com/wreckitralphThink you’ve got it rough? Try being a video game villain who never gets the recognition he deserves. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes Wreck-It Ralph, the story of one such bad guy (voiced by John C. Reilly) who longs to be as beloved as his game’s good guy, Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer). So when a modern, first-person shoot-er game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch), Ralph sees his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan -- win a medal -- but accidental-ly unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), a young trouble-making “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just get Ralph his good-guy wish. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2Not yet rated; likely PG-13. In theaters 11/16. Ok for kids 14+. Reel Preview: 4 out of 5 Reels. http://www.breakingdawn-themovie.com/I know, I know… vampires! But even with all the Twilight parodies through the years, I’m still a fan. Especially now that I’ve finished the book just in time to see the movie – a fine cinematic ending

to the moody saga. After the birth of her daughter Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy), Bella (Kristen Stew-art) is enjoying her new life and powers as a new-born vampire. But her joy is short-lived as Irina (Maggie Grace) rallies the Volturi to destroy this potential threat to the vampire world. The Cullens assemble others to fight the ultimate battle to protect their family. Is it bad for me to hope that Stephenie Meyer writes more books about the new generation of vampires and werewolves? LINCOLNNot yet rated; likely PG-13. In theaters 11/16. Ok for kids 13+. Reel Preview: 4.5 out of 5 Reels.Steven Spielberg seems to produce more movies than he directs these days, but I’m always happy to see him behind the camera. In 2011, he directed The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse. Now he helms this movie, based on the book Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin, about the 16th President of the United States. I’ve long been a fan of Daniel Day-Lewis’ ability to morph into whatever character he’s playing, and he does that here, as well. The movie focuses on the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War. The amazing cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Robert Todd Lincoln, Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens, Jared Harris as Ulysses S. Grant, Jackie Earle Haley as Alexander Stephens, David Strathairn as William Seward, and Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln. LIFE OF PINot yet rated; likely PG-13. In theaters 11/21. Ok for kids 13+. Reel Review: 4.5 out of 5 Reels. http://www.lifeofpimovie.com/This adventure film, directed by Ang Lee and based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel, tells the story of Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma), the precocious son of a zoo keeper in Pondicherry, India. When the family decides to move to Canada, they hitch a ride on a huge freighter, but the journey ends in a ship-wreck. Pi finds himself adrift in the Pacific Ocean on a 26-foot lifeboat with a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Talk about tense! But also sweet, surprising and magical.

Recently, a blog has been sweeping the mom world in cyberspace about our over-communi-cated society and

how it’s effecting this generation of motherhood.

It’s called How to Miss a Child-hood, written by www.HandsFreeMama.com.

She writes: “It’s for anyone who wants to let go of daily distraction and perfection to embrace what really matters.”

The blog hit home with me a little too much for my comfort level, with my busy work schedule and all, and I know many friends that feel the same way.

With the best of intentions, those little power packed gad-gets that we can do business AND socialize on are way cool, and robbing us of precious time.

Oh of course, I’m not advocating we throw them in a river like Anne Hathaway did in The Devil Wears Prada, but we can use our best judgement about when the call/text is im-portant, and when it can wait just a little bit while our child finishes his sentence or game.

Even as I write this, my 8 year old son is bored and waiting for me to get off the computer so we can finish getting him ready for the first day of school, and with guilt I said “Five more minutes”.

So, Hands Free is a quick two word reminder that I’m going to use to ask myself - “Do I REALLY need to clutch my phone or run to the computer? Is there something more important I should be doing? (There usually is). Unplugging and discon-necting now.........

Look, Son - No Hands. :-)

Financial literacy is as important as learning the ABC’s. By teaching financial and entrepreneurial practic-es at a young age, children

will be better prepared for their financial futures. The first step is to get started, so start with

these educational activities: start talking: Try a simple question such as,

“What is investing?” Questions are conversation starters and shouldn’t be complicated. The key is to teach through open communication that allows kids to discover - rather than be told - the answers.

starting thinking: Most kids are impulsive and fixate on things that are interesting. It’s tough to get them thinking beyond “now” when it comes to money. Overcoming that helps kids understand the basic principles of budgeting. Challenge them with questions such as, “Are you still going to want that expensive sweater in a month, or would it be better to save toward something else?” Helping kids grasp the concept of “value” instills a sense of financial ownership and responsibility. Remind them that once they spend the money, it’s gone.

start practicing: Kids learn through repetition. The more they do something, the better they get. No matter what

age the child is, present her with scenarios that re-quire practicing different financial principles. For ex-ample, during the summertime give your child $20 to set up a lemonade stand. Ask her, “What types of products will you need to buy to make lemonade? How much will those items cost? How many days do you plan to have the lemonade stand open?”

Asking these questions will not only help her work through the answers, but will also increase her understanding of simple business terms such as “overhead” and “profit.” Additionally, contributing more “investment” money to the fledgling business opens up dialogue about in-vestors and stocks. It takes a little imagination to come up with scenarios, but it can be a fun learning opportunity for the child and the parent.

start Investigating: The Internet provides a wealth of financial learning tools for children and parents. Of course, parents should monitor what their children are viewing online, but there are some invaluable educational sites, such as www.smckids.com, which features webisodes for Secret Millionaires Club (SMC), an animated series star-ring Warren Buffet as he mentors a group of kids.

Featured on The HUB network, as well as the website, the SMC series is an innovative way to teach sound financial and entrepreneurial prac-tices to young people. Modeled after the lessons instilled by Mr. Buffett in the animated series, SMC’s “Learn & Earn” Promotion - sponsored exclusively by www.creditreport.com - also offers interactive educational tools for parents and kids.

The bottom line: Stop waiting. It’s never too early to start teaching financial lessons.

For more fun and engaging financial re-sources, or to watch “The Secret Millionaires Club” webisodes, visit www.smckids.com.

Dirt is a four-letter word to many moms, but letting your kids get dirty is actually good for them according to a new report from the National Wildlife Federation, “The Dirt on Dirt: How Getting Dirty Outdoors Benefits Kids.”

Fears about dangers lurking in the muck – microbes, parasites and amoebas, oh my! – keep some parents from letting kids do what comes naturally, which is to go outside and get dirty.

But here’s a dirty little secret: Children who spend the better part of their free time in the company of their sterile hi-tech gadgets rather than playing outside, are more vulnerable to obe-sity, ADHD, vitamin D deficiency and depression.

There’s a growing body of research that sug-gests overprotecting kids from dirt and germs may actually inhibit their physical health and resilience. Activities kids love, such as mak-ing mud pies, splashing in puddles and rolling down hillsides are actually a grubby prescrip-tion for health and happiness. • Children’s stress levels fall within minutes of seeing green spaces, according to a 2004 study in the American Journal of Public Health.• When children are exposed to germs and pathogens during infancy, their risk of

cardiovascular inflammation in adulthood is reduced, according to a 2010 Northwestern University study.• A friendly bacteria found in soil helps produce serotonin, which enhances feelings of well-being, much the same way that antidepressant drugs and exercise do, according to a 2007 Bristol University study.

While common sense sanitation practices like washing hands and using hand sanitizer when soap and water aren’t available shouldn’t stop, you’ll be doing your children a favor if you encour-age them to go outside and get dirty.

Here are some fun – and messy – ideas from the National Wildlife Federation that will let your kids have some good, clean, dirty fun outdoors:

Be an artist• Give your child a stick and a muddy surface to draw on. Mistakes are no problem. Just smooth them over and start again.• Mud balls can become out-of-season snow-men or abstract sculptures. If your child’s creation isn’t sticking together, just add more water.

Early dEntal visits:

cavity-freeBy Robert Kevin McCarver, DDS

New parents often ask me, “When should my child first come to you?”

The short answer is “First visit by first birth-day.” That’s the view of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Pediatricians agree. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that children who are at risk of early childhood cavi-ties visit a pediatric dentist by age 1.

The idea of such early dental visits is still sur-

prising to many new parents. However, national studies have shown that cavities are increasing in preschool-aged children. More than 1 in 4 chil-dren in the United States has had at least one cavity by the age of 4. Many kids get cavities as early as age 2.

We see this pattern to be true in the kids we care for. We want to help you help your child be healthy and have a beautiful smile. We are look-ing forward meeting you and your child!

WhaT iS CyBeRBULLyingCyberbullying is bullying that takes place using elec-

tronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tab-lets as well as communication tools including social me-dia sites, text messages, chat, and websites. Examples of cyberbullying include mean text messages or emails,

rumors sent by email or posted on social network-ing sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, web-sites, or fake profiles. Why CyBeRBULLying iS DiFFeRenT

Kids who are being cyberbullied are often bullied in person as well. Additionally, kids who are cyberbullied have a harder time getting away from the behavior.

Cyberbullying can happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and reach a kid even when he or she is alone. It can happen any time of the day or night.

Cyberbullying messages and images can be posted anonymously and distributed quickly to a very wide audience. It can be difficult and some-times impossible to trace the source.

Deleting inappropriate or harassing messages, texts, and pictures is extremely difficult after they have been posted or sent.

eFFeCTS OF CyBeRBULLying Cell phones and computers them-

selves are not to blame for cyberbul-lying. Social media sites can be used for positive activities, like connecting kids with friends and family, helping students with school, and for entertain-ment. But these tools can also be used to hurt other people. Whether done in person or through technology, the ef-fects of bullying are similar.KiDS WhO aRe CyBeRBULLieD aRe MORe LiKeLy TO: • Use alcohol and drugs• Skip school• Receive poor grades• Have lower self-esteem• Experience in-person bullying• Have more health problems• Be unwilling to attend schoolFReqUenCy OF CyBeRBULLying

The 2008–2009 School Crime Sup-plement (National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics) in-dicates that 6% of stu-dents in grades 6–12 experienced cyberbully-ing. The 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey finds that 16% of high school students (grades 9-12) were elec-tronically bullied in the past year. Research on cyberbullying is growing. However, because kids’ technology use changes rapidly, it is difficult to design surveys that ac-curately capture trends.

2 cups all purpose flour1 cup salt1 cup waterMix flour and salt in a large bowl. Add a little

water at a time, mixing as you pour, to form a ball. Additional water may be needed, but don’t add too much so that the dough becomes sticky. Knead until the dough is smooth and firm. To pre-vent spoiling or drying, place dough in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. This clay air dries hard if you allow it to stand at least 48 hours (until it is rock hard and white) Then it’s ready to finish- it can be painted or decorated with paint, markers or pens. Or, for a faster drying time (done by an adult, of course), bake on a foil-covered cookie sheet at 325 degrees until a light golden brown.

Why do kids tease? Some teasing starts out to be fun, but then it goes too far and turns nega-tive and hurtful. Some kids tease because they feel bad about themselves, or they are sad or scared. Some kids tease to go along with the crowd. They think teasing other children will make them look cool. Read each section and then discuss the questions.

Lydia is teasing Julie about her messy hair. Circle what Julie is thinking. Why do you choose the thought you selected? Funny is not the same for everyone. One person may think getting teased about their hair is funny. Another person might find getting teased about their hair painful.

The verb tease means to make fun of or annoy.

Dad told Jeremy not to tease his little sister.

Try to use the word tease in a sentence today when talking with your friends and family members.

1. Ignore the teaser or walk away and go somewhere else to play. Some people tease to get attention and if they don’t get it, they will stop.2. Tell the person teasing you that you would like them to stop. Say things like, “When you say that, it hurts my feelings, and I want you to stop.” or, “Please stop teasing me now.”3. Make a joke or say something bizarre like, “Hey! There is spaghetti falling off the tree!”4. If none of the above works, seek help from a trusted teacher, parent or other adult.

A refreshing salad should be quick, easy, and full of delicious in-season produce. With its countless possibilities for add-ins, a fruit and pasta salad fits the bill perfectly as a dish the whole family will love to prepare and eat.

Mom or Dad will need to start things off by cooking the pasta according to package direc-tions. While the pasta cooks, enlist the kids to create the dressing – a creamy mix of yogurt, honey and a dash of cinnamon – and choose fa-vorite fruits for the salad. A colorful combination of fresh fruits like sweet, delicious blueberries, kiwi, peaches and strawberries, paired with a refreshing hint of mint, makes this simple-to-fix salad really come together.

products were introduced to me. I hear: ‘You look younger,’’Your hair/skin/nails look better’... and my FAVORITE: ‘Are you losing weight?’ I turned 40 this year and with my work schedule, I needed stress relief, mental clarity, and overall energy without the peaks and valleys of coffee and junk. ADVOCARE products provide all that for me. I am literally more productive at work and crave much healthier food.”Michelle

NEW ON DVD | BLU-RAY:

BRAVE Rated PG for some scary action and rude humor. On DVD/blu-ray 11/13. Ok for

kids 7+. Reel Rating: 5 out of 5 Reels. One of my favorite family movies of 2012 hits DVD and blu-ray this month. Disney/Pixar’s Brave follows the heroic journey of red-haired Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) in the Highlands of Scotland. Determined to change her fate, Merida defies a sacred custom, unleashing chaos in the kingdom. An eccentric witch (Julie Walters) grants her an ill-fated wish, and the ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her resources, including her mischievous triplet brothers, to undo a beastly curse and dis-cover the meaning of true bravery. Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson and Robbie Coltrane also lend their voices to this beautiful tale. Tons of bonus features. CINDERELLARated G. On DVD 11/20. Ok for kids 5+. Reel Rating: 5 out of 5 Reels. First released in 1950, a couple of new editions of Disney’s animated story of Cinderella are new on shelves. The blu-ray versions came out Oct.

2, and now this DVD version, all digitally restored with high-definition sound. You know the story: Cinderella ((voiced by Ilene Woods) has faith that her dreams of a better life will come true. With help from her loyal mice friends and a wave of her Fairy Godmother’s wand, the girl’s rags are magically turned into a glorious gown and off she goes to the Royal Ball. But when the clock strikes midnight, the spell is broken, leaving only a sin-gle glass slipper … the only clue to the ultimate fairytale ending. Bonus features include Tangled Ever After (animated short); Behind the Magic: A New Disney Princess Fantasyland; and Diane Disney Miller Intro.
