St. James West UMC The West Wind Page 1 Volume 16, Issue 8 August 2012 A publication of St. James West United Methodist Church Gene Backes, Pastor KIDS KIDS. Little munchkins. Little people. Kiddos. I am sitting here during Vacation Bible School, watching the kids during recreation time laughing and playing. We are so blessed with the sound of kids in the church. Many times we have heard the phrase, “They are the church of tomorrow.” I disagree. They are the church of today! It has also been said that confession is good for the soul. Therefore, I’m confessing. When I became Pastor of this church six years ago, I intentionally focused my time and attention on making the one hour of worship as excellent as I could. I stayed focused on our worship service to the exclusion of our children and youth. Over the last several months God has been speaking to me about our kids. I believe that we must focus our time, energy, money, and attention on our children and youth. A lot has happened over the past six years that has brought glory to God. I am so thankful that God has poured out His spirit. But I believe that God is calling us to provide excellence in opportunities for our children and youth. I am committing myself to prayer and fasting on behalf of our kids. I do not want to settle for simply getting by. I want excellent facilities and passionate, motivated, creative people who love God and love kids to be a part of the next big movement of God here at St. James West. This church decided to invest in youth in 1979 and that is how I came to be a part of this wonderful community of faith. I was given an opportunity and the freedom to lead the youth. Will you commit to prayer and fasting for our kids? If you’re unable to fast, God understands. Will you pray? Will you begin to discuss and brainstorm ideas? Please don’t limit your creativity...dream big! Fantasize about the greatest children and youth programs, and then look for ways to make it happen. I do not have all the answers. I do not have a plan. But I have a desire to see kids grow in the faith and be transformed. Please, please join with me. God Bless, Gene Please Join the Chicks! Church Chicks is open to all ladies of St. James West! We are planning many activities right now, as well as events in 2013! The meeting schedule for the remainder of 2012 is as follows: August 1st September 19th (meet in Welcome Center) October 10th October 24th November 7th Church Chicks meet on Wednesdays in the Gym starting at 6:00 p.m. We hope you will join us! Calling All Chefs... ...and cooks, and foodies, and anyone who tinkers in the kitchen! St. James West Church Chicks want your best and favorite recipes to publish in a cookbook, which will be available for purchase at the Bazaar scheduled for Sunday, November 11th. It’s been a while since a cookbook has been published! We all love to try new recipes and there have been countless new and delicious dishes prepared for functions at St. James West. Forms on which to submit your recipe are available in the Welcome Center. Information needed on the form include your name, the category/ type of recipe, (such as main dish, vegetable, dessert, etc.), and a typed or neatly printed copy of your recipe. Completed forms can be placed in the box provided in the Welcome Center. We encourage you to go through your treasured family recipes and pick out your favorites to share in this special cookbook. We would also gladly accept cooking tips and any helpful kitchen hints you’ve discovered! The deadline to submit recipes is Sunday, September 2nd. We hope to have a great cookbook that will be valued, and used for gifts to someone special, as well as something we couldn’t do without in our homes. We look forward to your submissions! If you have any questions, please contact Lou Effinger (963-5513) or Carol Peckenpaugh (985-3924).

Fall Rummage & Bake Sale/BBQ Ribs September 14 & 15, 2012

7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Setup begins on Wednesday, September 5, 2012)

It’s time to start thinking about Fall Cleaning and getting rid of those unused items – that have been on the shelves for quite some time and are no longer being used. We would be grateful to have those items for the Rummage Sale. You know, your trash just might be someone’s treasure! We have a great time setting up, pricing, eating together and working at the sale. It’s such great fellowship and it’s all for St. James West and the outreach special ministries. Since we are no longer able to store rummage in the CFC, please bring in your items any time after the set-up, starting on Thursday, September 6th. Feel free to put a price on your items when you bring them; or if you choose not to price them, we’ll be glad to do that for you. If you have rummage that needs to come in sooner, please call the church office at 425-7405 or Bonnie Toone at 963-5210, and arrangements will be made to accommodate you.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Volunteers are needed during the set-up week, especially any strong, able-bodied persons available to assist with heavy lifting on the first day of set-up and during the take-down time.

Set-up: Wednesday, September 5th at 4:00 p.m.

(Pizza will be served!)

Take-down: Saturday, September 15th at 2:00 p.m. Anyone is welcome to assist during these times, even if it’s only for an hour… every moment helps. Also, on the days of the sale, we have a big BAKE

SALE. Bring in your items—baked goods, homemade cookies and candies, canned items and vegetables. Everyone loves “goodies.” Items should be wrapped and ready for pricing, or you can price them yourself.

BBQ RIBS! Following the spring sale, it was requested to have the BBQ ribs again. They were delicious and a big hit. They will be available both days of the sale. A slab of

ribs will be sold for $21. The ribs will be cooked on the church grounds by our capable chefs – and oh, what an aroma! Pre-order tickets for these succulent slabs will be sold on September 2nd and 9th (before and after church services), and there will be extra slabs available for purchase during the rummage sale.

WITH YOUR HELP, WE WILL HAVE

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SALE!

We Believe in the Power of Prayer! Volunteers needed for telephone prayer chain

St. James West is in need of a few more people to

assist with the telephone prayer chain. When a church

member requests prayers for a specific person or

situation, the first member on the prayer chain is

contacted to pray for that person, then he/she calls the

next member on the prayer chain list to keep the prayers

going. Prayer chain members participate on an

as-needed basis, and it doesn’t take much time or effort

to raise a few words of support and comfort to God on

behalf of those who are suffering or in need.

If you are interested in participating in the telephone

prayer chain, please call the church office at 425-7405,

or speak to Pastor Gene.

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray.

Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the

elders of the church, and let them pray over him,

anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

“To St. James West UMC,

Thank you for the many visits, cards, flowers,

prayers, memorials, and the funeral dinner—with

love, we express our deepest appreciation and

gratitude for remembering Dorothy Poehlein in such

special ways. She loved life, lived with joy, and will

be in our hearts forever.”

-Donna & Luther Schmidt and Family

“Dear Church Family,

Thank you all so much for the calls, cards, and

energetic self. Praise the Lord! ”

We extend our deepest sympathy to those who have suffered the loss of these loved ones:

Barbara Prehara passed away on July 10, 2012. Barbara was a member of St. James West.

Dorothy Poehlein passed away on July 16, 2012. Dorothy is the mother of Donna Schmidt and aunt of Randy Bailey.

Ralph Branch passed away on July 24, 2012. Ralph was a member of St. James West.

Odie Carrier passed away on July 27, 2012. Odie is the husband of Norma Carrier and father of Debi Doninger.

Please keep these families in your prayers as they transition through this difficult time.

A big THANK YOU to many of St. James West’s

“Roosters” (men) who have helped to tidy up the

parking area between the church and CFC

buildings. The railroad ties have been replaced

and new rock has been spread to make a more

uniform surface. We appreciate your hard work,

especially in the hot weather!

A patriotic THANK YOU to

Cub Scout Pack #351

(Jim Bauermeister, Pack Leader) for

donating and installing the flagpole and

flag, which is located at the southwest

corner of the church building. A hearty THANK YOU to

Jaclyn Cantner and all the

volunteers who helped to

make VBS 2012 a success! There was a great

turnout of children who had a

fun-filled week of “Babylonian

Adventures,” music worship, crafts

and games. Praise the Lord for our

children & youth at St. James West!
