Apple’s iPad mightappeal to older folksBy Leslie Meredith

Top Ten Reviews

At last, an Applefor the older set.

That mightnot have been

what Steve Jobs, 55, hadin mind with Apple’s newtablet, but that’s exactlywhat the iPad is, withits triple-sized screencompared to the iPhone,built-in features for thosewith vision and hearingloss, and connection to thebiggest collection of appsin the world, all in a devicethat weighs less than thismonth’s issue of VanityFair magazine.

The iPad is categorizedas a tablet computer, measuring about 9½inches tall by 7½ incheswide, a bit smaller thana standard magazine. The high resolution,LED backlit touchscreenis 9.7 inches, measureddiagonally. It runs onApple’s proprietaryprocessor offering high-speed start-up timesfor programs, high-definition video outputand long battery life.Apple estimates the iPadwill run for 10 hourswhile watching video. Astand and keyboard areavailable to turn the iPadinto a desktop computer.

What does it do? You can watch movies,

TV shows and podcastsafter downloadingselections from iTunes. Each is stored under the“Movies” icon for easy

access. If you need to takea break, the iPad willmark your place and startthe show from where youleft off, whether that’sminutes or days later.

You can do all of youre-mail. iPad has its owne-mail interface thattransforms most populare-mail programs into easy-to-read screens. You canread e-mails full screenand view attachments infull screen as well. Theon-screen touch keyboardis big and clear whenheld in the horizontal orlandscape orientation.

You can dive into Apple’snew iBookstore, which

turns the iPad into ane-reader. Tapping on theiBook app will display

an empty bookshelf on the screen. VisitiBookstore to download

books, magazines andnewspapers, and youritems will appear on yourvirtual shelf.

Like the iPhone andiPod Touch, you canlisten to music, surf theInternet with the built-inSafari browser and usethe dizzying number of apps available throughthe App Store. While alliPhone and iPod Touchapps also work on theiPad, many developers areredesigning their apps tosuit the bigger screen andfunctionality of the iPad.Some are available now,but more will roll out inthe coming months.

Seeing and hearing

The iPad has built-in features to maketext easier to read, like full-screen zoommagnification and highcontrast white-on-blackdisplay option. There issupport for playback of closed-captioned content,a voiceover screenreader and mono audiothat combines sound fordelivery to one ear.

The iPad comes intwo versions: Wi-Fiavailable as of April 3 andWi-Fi with 3G cellularconnection through AT&T,

available later this month, according to Apple. The$500 Wi-Fi iPad with 16gigabytes (GB) of internalmemory will be more thanenough for many people.

You will need a wirelessrouter in your home forthe connection, and manypublic locations offercomplementary Wi-Fiaccess if you plan to takeyour iPad on the road.
