Kidney Transplant
The newest member of
our research team, Hannah
Wesselman, joined us in
August of 2017. She con-
nected with the Kidney
Transplant Fast Track Study
via the Pittsburgh Urban
Leadership Service Experi-
ence (PULSE), a program that partners college graduates
with nonprofits in the region for one year to facilitate
community development and personal growth. Hannah is
from Washington State, where she graduated from Saint
Martin’s University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology.
Her previous research focused on genomics, but she is
currently thriving as a clinical research assistant, and es-
pecially enjoys interacting with patients. She has transi-
tioned well to life in Pittsburgh, and loves exploring new
coffee shops in the city. At the conclusion of her year of
service in July, she will be attending the University of
Notre Dame to pursue a PhD in Biological Sciences.

The kidney transplant research team appreciates your help
with our study and hopes you have had a wonderful spring
and fun filled start to the summer season. We are looking
forward to warmer and sunnier days ahead. We hope to
take a little of your time to update you on the progress of
our study as we approach the four year mark. Your partici-
pation in this study will help us better understand how to
reduce transplant evaluation times and how to increase
the rates of kidney transplantation as well as to understand
how people make decisions about their treatment options
for kidney transplantation. To date, 1289 participants have
been enrolled in our study, and 1255 of those have com-
pleted their first interview. Of the 1255 participants who
completed their first interview, 767 completed their second
and final interview. Our goal is to complete all first and sec-
ond interviews by July 2019. So far, 37% percent of the
participants in our study are women and 62% percent are
men. The average age of study participants is 56 years old,
with an overall age range of 20 to 89. Your continued par-
ticipation is what really makes our research a success!
Thank you for your support of our project.
Sincerely,
Drs. Larissa Myaskovsky, Mary Amanda Dew,
and the Kidney Transplant Research Team
RESEARCH STUDY PROGRESS
Two of our team
members—Dr. Laris-
sa Myaskovsky and
Ms. Hannah Wessel-
man—had the op-
portunity to present
our ongoing research
at the 18th Annual
American Transplant Congress in Seattle, WA. They discussed
research related to living donor kidney transplantation, and con-
nected with several researchers and clinicians across the country.
We hope to continue the tradition of presenting our ground-
breaking research at this conference again next year!

Our research assistant, Han-nah Wesselman, organized a team for the Novem-ber 2017 NKF kidney walk held at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. The PULSE team of eight runners (six are pictured)
endured the rain to support the National Kidney Foundation and enjoyed the inspirational stories of ESKD patients along the way. The event was a huge success, and raised $268,000 for kidney disease patients across the nation. Please visit www.kidney.org/offices/nkf-serving-alleghenies for more information on how to participate in future events.
SELENA RECEIVED THE GIFT OF LIFE
Kidney
disease
affects
30 million
Americans
across all
socioeco-
nomic status-
es, gender,
and age.
Despite the challenges posed by chronic kidney disease, individuals
across the globe find ways to survive and thrive, and some even be-
come chart-topping performers! Selena Gomez, an actress and singer
known for her work on Wizards of Waverly Place and her best-selling
albums Revival and For You, was diagnosed with Lupus in 2015. Lupus is
an autoimmune disease that can spread to the kidneys, causing renal
failure. Gomez has been open about her health battle with her fans and
revealed that she received a living donor kidney transplant in the sum-
mer of 2017 from her friend and roommate, Francia Raisa. The surgery
was successful, as Gomez has experienced complete remission of her
kidney disease, and both Gomez and Raisa are doing well. This heart-
warming story of sacrifice offers hope for those living with kidney dis-
ease, showing that it is possible to succeed and be proactive about your
health. Please visit www.kidney.org/newsletter/selena-gomez-
