Summer 2018 UPDATE Kidney Transplant Fast Track Study SUMMER 2018 UPDATE Kidney Transplant Fast Track Study

Our research assistant, Han-nah Wesselman, organized a team for the Novem-ber 2017 NKF kidney walk held at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. The PULSE team of eight runners (six are pictured)

endured the rain to support the National Kidney Foundation and enjoyed the inspirational stories of ESKD patients along the way. The event was a huge success, and raised $268,000 for kidney disease patients across the nation. Please visit www.kidney.org/offices/nkf-serving-alleghenies for more information on how to participate in future events.

SELENA RECEIVED THE GIFT OF LIFE

Kidney

disease

affects

30 million

Americans

across all

socioeco-

nomic status-

es, gender,

and age.

Despite the challenges posed by chronic kidney disease, individuals

across the globe find ways to survive and thrive, and some even be-

come chart-topping performers! Selena Gomez, an actress and singer

known for her work on Wizards of Waverly Place and her best-selling

albums Revival and For You, was diagnosed with Lupus in 2015. Lupus is

an autoimmune disease that can spread to the kidneys, causing renal

failure. Gomez has been open about her health battle with her fans and

revealed that she received a living donor kidney transplant in the sum-

mer of 2017 from her friend and roommate, Francia Raisa. The surgery

was successful, as Gomez has experienced complete remission of her

kidney disease, and both Gomez and Raisa are doing well. This heart-

warming story of sacrifice offers hope for those living with kidney dis-

ease, showing that it is possible to succeed and be proactive about your

health. Please visit www.kidney.org/newsletter/selena-gomez-
