Red Sox Retire Jim Rice’s #14

A s it came time to vote for the 2009 Hallof Fame class, Jim Rice had one last shot

at becoming enshrined with baseball’s best. Itwas the 15th and final season that Rice waseligible to be elected to the Hall. Luckily, forthe baseball writers’ sake, they voted Rice in,ending a wait most fans felt was too long. Twodays after his Hall of Fame induction ceremonyRice received another prestigious honor—theRed Sox retired his number 14 and placed it onthe right field roof facade. Rice joins Sox greatsBobby Doerr (1), Joe Cronin (4), Johnny Pesky(6), Carl Yastrzemski (8), Ted Williams (9) andCarlton Fisk (27) as the only Red Sox players tohave retired numbers. Jackie Robinson’snumber, 42, is retired by all Major League teams.

NESN announcer Don Orsillo introduced JimRice as “one of the most feared and prolific play-ers in Red Sox and Major League history.”Wearing his jersey, tan khakis and a big smile,Rice strolled in from left field to home plateamidst a standing ovation. Larry Lucchino pre-sented him with a crystal bat and gave his wife abouquet of roses. As Rice waited at home manyformer teammates including Carlton Fisk, DennisEckersley, Fred Lynn and Dwight Evans huggedand congratulated him, as did Dick Berardino hisfirst professional coach. Johnny Pesky, whosenumber was retired last season, unveiled number14 as the Fenway faithful stood and cheered onone of the best in Red Sox history. Teary eyed

Rice raised his hands andthanked the crowd, telling them“you are the best fans I everplayed for.” After thanking thefans, Rice went on to thank theYawkey family, John Henry,

Larry Lucchino, Tom Werner, and NESN.

Rice continued by saying he was “blessed, notonly to spend my entire career in the Red Soxorganization, but to be standing here one day infront of Red Sox Nation, for the best fans inbaseball and having my number 14 retired withsuch greats as Cronin, Doerr, Pesky, Williams, Yazand Fisk” He also thanked Jackie Robinson formaking it possible for an African American manlike himself to be able to play baseball. Hethanked Carl Yastrzemski along with his team-mates who had joined him. He thanked his firstcoach Dick Berardino for making him, “the firstblack-Italian guy that I have ever known”. Aftera good laugh he continued by thanking Jerry“Remdawg” Remy. He concluded by thanking allof his supporters and by pointing to and thankingall of the sections of fans at Fenway. ThenCaptain Jason Varitek and veteran TimWakefield presented Rice with a replica of hisnumber 14 autographed byall of the Sox players. Totop off a historic and emo-tional night at Fenway, Ricedelivered a high-heater toDwight Evans for the firstpitch of the game.

Rice’s career stats indicatethat his election to the Hallof Fame was overdue. In 16seasons with Boston he hit.298 (first-year inductee AlKaline hit .297), 382homers (first-year inducteeand Yankee great JoeDiMaggio hit 361) and1451 RBI (Duke Snider had

1,333). He was also an eight time All-Star, MVPand had eight seasons with over a hundred RBI.However, according to his teammates and coach-es, his personality outdid all of his statistics.

Once in a game at Fenway, a sharply hit line-drive smashed into the head of four year-oldJonathan Keane, who was sitting next to theSox dugout. Jim Rice immediately jumped andgrabbed Jonathan from his seat, rushing him tothe trainers’ room from which he was transport-ed to Children’s Hospital where he underwentsurgery and was released five days later.“Obviously, as we sit here today, what [Rice] didsaved [Jonathan’s] life,” Tom Keane, the boy’sfather, later said.

Whether one examines his baseball stats or hischaracter, Jim Rice clearly deserves a place in theHall of Fame. Rice now is permanently recognizedin both Cooperstown and Fenway Park, both wor-thy honors for his outstanding Red Sox career.

K I D N A T I O N W A N T S T O K N O W :

Dear Manny,

You are a great pitcher with loads of ta

lent. But, like lots of

us, one day you might pitch really well and another day no

t so

much. How do you shrug off days when y

ou don’t have your

stuff so that the next time you get called fro

m the bullpen

you are focused again?

I play little league ball now and sometimes I make a mistake

and get upset with myself or get teased

by the other kids

which bothers me. I really like to know how the big kids

do it.

Go Sox!Thank you,

Caleb, Age 9

MD:Well, just know that we cannot be perfect

all the

time. As long as you know you gave it 110 p

ercent you

can live with that. No matter the outcome.

Then you

learn from your mistakes. People can’t judge

you if you try

your hardest. Remember; always give it your

all.

I just wanted to know how you prepare for enteringthe game when the bases are loaded in the laterinnings with two outs? Are your strategies moremental than physical?Sincerely,Jake - GO SOX!!!

MD: For me, I just wanna come in throwingstrikes and try to have command of all my pitches.Have a positive attitude and see what happens.Mostly going in with the attitude that if you trustyour stuff you’ll be fine.

Manny, who do you thin

k is the funniest

player on the team?

Andrew

MD:We have a lot of differen

t guys on

the team. I would have to

say that David

Ortiz is funniest.

How do you decide what pitches tothrow to each different batter?

Sadira Boston, MA

MD:We always have a meetingbefore to discuss the hitters. Ourcaptain Jason Varitek and nowVictor Martinez really study thehitters well and together wetry to come up with a plan.

I would like to know which pitch is your

favorite? and when did you start your base-

ball career? in Little League? if so what age?

Kai, Age 7

Medford, Oregon

MD: My fastball just because I throw hard

sometimes. But at the same time, all my

pitches help me out. I’ve played baseball my

whole life. My dad played in the minor

leagues with the Phillies and never made it

to the Big Leagues. So I’m living his dream,

or should I say he is living his dream

through me.

When the bases are loaded and youcome out to pitch, are you reallyscared or nervous? Your biggest fan, Harrison

MD: I wouldn’t say scared—morenervous than anything. You just sayto yourself: “you can get out of this”and leave everything on the field.

Because you grew up in Boston, did you

always dream about playing for the Red

Sox? Do you have any pre-game rituals?

Thank you,

Nicholas

MD: Yes, it was my dream as a kid.

Being here now is a different story.

Not too many guys get to play with

their home town team. As for pre-

game rituals, I don’t have any.

drinking lowfat chocolate milk after exercise canhelp repair and refuel tired muscles?

Studies suggest that the combination of key nutri-ents in lowfat chocolate milk makes it an effectivepost-exercise recovery beverage instead of sportsdrinks.* Intense aerobic activity, such as runningand biking, depletes stored energy, called glyco-gen, in the muscles. Consuming carbohydrates, like those found in Hood Chocolate Lowfat Milk, replaces glycogen just as well as sports bever-ages. Lowfat chocolate milk also contains pro-tein, necessary for recovery after exercise, alongwith calcium and vitamin D. It also provides flu-ids and electrolytes, such as potassium, to rehydrate your body.

After your next workout, recover with a delicious glass of Hood ChocolateLowfat Milk!
