As a rising TV star, Khaled Anwar has been busy working on different projects lately and stepping up his game. The actor made time for Cairo West Publications in a one-on-one chat about the man behind the actor.

CWP: Do you think that fame brings happiness?

KA: For me, happiness is having the freedom to do what you like without harming anyone else. Having internal peace of mind, not needing anything from anyone, not hating anyone, having people who love you, having friends you can trust, and feeling useful is happiness.

You mentioned that you wanted to play Charlie Chaplin and Hitler in film, why?

I have a theory that when someone does a lot of good for others his life usually has a lot of bad in it and that those who have a good life do a lot of bad to others. Charlie Chaplin was unhappy in his life even though he made a lot of people laugh. This theory has nagged at me ever since I started understanding the art of acting and that’s why I want to portray that.

Is it true that what you see is what you get?

Not at all. My bubbly persona that the audience sees is very much who I am. I love to laugh and meet new people but even though I might appear to be happy all the time that is not the truth at all. The problem with being an actor is that it doesn’t allow me the freedom to do many things I like.

For example, I am a bit of a shy person; I don’t like it when someone stares at me. I always have to appear in a certain way that is almost perfect, whether physically or mentally. I always have to act the way I’m expected or perceived. Being famous gets a bit suffocating and I don’t feel as free as I was before.

Speaking of invasion of privacy and fame, are you ready for what’s coming?

Yes, I understand what’s coming very well and I’m trying to be accepting and understanding of it so that I can live with it. I feel like the best is yet to come and I hope I can do what I really want to do.

Were you ever affected by a negative comment?

My professor once told me to always look at something negative with a positive eye. When someone gives me negative feedback I don’t just attack them back, instead I ask them why, why do you think so? Even if some feedback is not always completely true or justified but it might still have some truth in it. I want to improve humanity with what I do and to make a difference in Egyptian society. I don’t just want to be another actor who appears in a few movies.

What is the one role you feel is made for you?

I never thought about that before. I like seeing or doing roles that I know nothing about or have never done before and to research and learn about it.

Do you feel like some people are only around you because of your fame?

Unfortunately, doing what I do creates lack of trust in myself, my decisions and everyone else. Somehow I always have a problem trusting others especially if they aren’t family or people I’ve known from before I was famous.

Do you think that there’s something standing between you and your dream?

My dream will require a lot of effort from me and others as well, but I try to work hard and progress fast to get there. I want Egyptian cinema to be the most substantial in the world and there’s still a long way to go. Nevertheless, I feel like my generation will achieve it. We are more educated, we have a different mentality from those before us, and we don’t want to just imitate, we want to innovate, create and showcase our own culture.

How do you think we can grow as a society?

Bullying is a huge problem in our society, I was once a bully myself but then I realized how insensitive it can be to others. When you bully someone you turn them into bullies as well. I think we should just let people do what they want and mind our own business or fix our own problems. Say something nice or don’t say anything at all.

I wish to change our society so that we are able to talk about bullying, traffic or even the trash in the streets. I want to talk about more humanitarian issues that if resolved will take us to a completely different place. If people change internally, it will change how they work, live or do anything. I believe that everyone should start with themselves!

Do you like taking risks?

Very much! Being an actor is a risk in itself already. Right after I finished high school I wanted so bad to get into acting school but my father started applying for other universities. When I had to take the tests required to get accepted in those universities I failed them on purpose. Even though I wasn’t sure I would be able to get into acting school it was a huge risk to take but I’m glad I did it.

You’ve acted in a grand love story before, do you believe in them?

Of course! Fear is what creates impossibility. You just have to work hard and keep at it because nothing is impossible. The harder your dream is to achieve the harder you have to work for it.

What do you think of today’s generation?

Our generation has seen a lot and has learned from past mistakes. It has taught us to be smarter, and more driven. We believe in peace and that we will make a huge impact on the world. After every storm, there is a rainbow. I believe that what’s coming will be better. For Egypt especially, I feel that we are becoming better people socially and we are facing our problems very openly through social media.

You talked about the effects of social media, how do you use it positively?

There’s a general sense of pessimism all around the world currently, things aren’t like they were in the past. People don’t care about each other the way they used to. In Egypt especially, we’ve become more Westernized, not as compassionate and sympathetic like we used to be. I try to be positive and use social media to minimize the sense of frustration through posting photos that are funny.

On the other hand, social media can be very bad for you if you let it control your life. You have to control its effect on you and instead of following people do things or getting big, you have to start doing things yourself and becoming who you want to be.

CWP: Congrats on your most recent role in Leh La2. For people who haven’t watched it yet, how would you describe the series?

MK: I really find it as a different type of TV series because it is lighthearted, yet it addresses important social issues without being overly dramatic. Leh La2 touches you differently from these types of shows because it is highly relatable.

You play the role of Radwa in the show, who is in a very toxic relationship and is going through a lot of phases of self-discovery and questioning, how did you prepare for that role?

I can’t generalize, but most girls either were a “Radwa” at some point, or are Radwa or have personally known a Radwa, which made embodying the role not that hard. On top of that, Mariam Abo Ouf the director and Mariam Naoum the writer really believe in this project and have a clear vision of what each character should portray so they were an enormous help. If I had any questions I knew I could call them to discuss no matter how busy they were, so it was a collective effort to build this character.

In a short span of time you have played different characters, all of which raised important social issues. Was that a conscious decision? How do you choose your roles?

What I choose to be conscious about is to not give too much importance to being present in each season, but rather focus on how the role will be adding to my career and to choose different roles that I haven’t done before. That’s why when I was offered a role in Eugenie Nights I immediately took it as it was different from anything that I had done before.

So is that why you chose to dabble in comedy and take part in El Anesa Farah?

Yes! I was really scared getting into that project because comedy is not easy, it’s very difficult. Not every drama actor can play comedy and vice versa. But it turned out to be a very important step because I knew that comedy is a big test that I had to try and see if I was any good at.

You mentioned before that you wanted to do horror, why?

I want to do horror because I actually get really scared. So I feel like this would be an important challenge for me. Seeing the behind the scenes and how these films and series are made I feel I would be less scared knowing it’s all just make-up and special effects.

Mentioning make-up, you have talked plenty about cruelty free products, so how deep did you get into the research on animal testing?

A multinational brand had once asked me to be part of their campaign and I declined, I said, “No because you guys test on animals”. They then told me that they didn’t but I knew they did so we kept going back and forth until I found the part in their legal papers that proved that they were testing on animals. So yes, I can say that I got really deep into it.

I’ve seen a lot of videos on animal testing and I couldn’t even watch all the way through from the cruelty. So I asked myself, “Am I willing to buy products that are made under such circumstances?”, and my answer was no way, I could absolutely not. My friend Asmaa Ibrahim (the actress) gave me advice that I now live by and apply to all situations of my life, “respect how you feel”. And it’s true, you always need to respect whatever it is you’re feeling.

With all the information that you have been gathering about animal testing and animal rights how did that affect your lifestyle and food consumption?

The first thing was that I stopped using any products that used animal testing no matter how tempting, I can always find cruelty-free replacement. Then I completely stopped eating meat and poultry. And then I decreased my usage of plastic and got a linen tote bag that I take with me to the supermarket. I am not a vegan since I still eat cheese and butter, but if I could stop consuming those as well if there was a variety of substitutes I would. For others being vegan is easier, to me it’s a step by step process. One step is better than none at all.

Apart from acting and radio what other talents are you known for?

Every time someone asks me about my other talents I say two things, one is drawing and sculpting because I studied art at university, and the other is handiwork. I really like work that can be done using my hands. For example if there is a running tap or a burnt lightbulb I would fix it. Every now and then I like going around the house to check on electrical keys to see if something needs fixing.

So you’re still in radio, do you still consider that as your first love?

Radio for me is a constant, it is something I am on daily. I started acting in plays and independent films before starting a career in radio. The idea of being on air used to make me nervous but when I started, I quickly became attached to it so I try to keep it in line with whatever other work I have. I am lucky that everyone that I worked with were understanding of my role in radio so there was no clash between my careers in radio and acting so far.

What do you currently have in the pipeline?

I don’t like to speak about something unless it is already in process. What I can tell you is that hopefully very soon season 2 of El Anesa Farah will happen and let’s take it from there.

An Open Conversation with

Multi-talented actress, radio host and animal rights supporter, Mariam El Khosht carved out some time from her hectic schedule to chat with Cairo West Publications.

Face Masks and Skin Irritation

What You Should Look Out ForBy Wedad Z. Mostafa, Dermatology Professor, Cairo

University and Consultant Oasis Clinics

Although staying home and practicing social distancing are recommended to minimize exposure to COVID-19, the truth of the matter is that many of us need to work, shop, exercise, and interact with others. In all of these cases, wearing a face mask has become essential, mandatory even; evidence suggests that it reduces the chance of the virus spreading, whether or not the person wearing it is in fact infected.

Masks vary in terms of material; they are either surgical masks, N-95 masks, made from a fine mesh of synthetic polymer fibers, or reusable, fabric masks. While surgical masks are mostly made from a soft synthetic or non-woven fabric — some are made from foam material — N-95 masks are firmer. Both have an enforcement metal piece or sticky bands to ensure occlusion for safety. However, these protective components exaggerate the humidity produced by breathing and talking.

Some of us may develop allergic contact dermatitis to one kind of mask or the other, due to the materials used. However, most people will develop irritant dermatitis or, put simply, irritation. Irritation can be caused by friction when coupled with humidity. This results in itching, which could develop into scratches or wounds.

Well-fitted masks made of cotton are less likely to produce dermatitis, unless the person wearing them is allergic to a special color or dye. Multilayered cotton masks made from fabric used in making T-shirts are by far less likely to produce irritation or rashes than masks made from polyester, nylon or rayon.

In the heat of summer, irritation coupled with scratching and sweating can produce rashes.

Those who suffer prior acne or rosacea are most at risk of developing a rash and hence should contact their dermatologist for solutions. De novo pimples i.e. new break-outs, can occur underneath the area covered by the mask, which is particularly rich in oil glands and associated moisture, a consequence of sweating, breathing and talking.

To avoid or minimize irritation from face masks, here are a few tips that may be helpful:

Avoid wearing makeup. Wear a well-fitted mask, neither loose nor tight, to achieve protection while preventing skin agitation.

Wash your face with a mild facial cleanser or soap before wearing a mask and immediately after removing it. A facial moisturizer can protect against skin damage from increased friction.

In areas where there is continuous rubbing — over the bridge of nose, chin or behind ears — it is recommended to apply a zinc oxide cream before putting on the mask to cushion the area and guard against chafing.

In case of mild irritation, a hydrocortisone cream may be applied onto the irritated area for a day or two.

In case of skin abrasions, which may occur after prolonged hours of wearing a mask, creams containing Aloe Vera and pantothenic acid should provide a quick relief. It’s then that you need to schedule an appointment with your dermatologist.

At all times, make sure you are breathing in and out freely without feeling distress or dizziness, and avoid exercising heavily while wearing a mask.

STAY SAFe AND SANITIZeD.

Dr. Abdel Nasser Omar on Coping with

Covid-19 StressAs we face all manner of new pressures and

uncertainties each day, it is natural that dealing with crises and roadblocks has amped up levels of anxiety and depression. To get some insight

into how we can manage all this, we turned to Prof. Dr. Abdel Nasser Omar, Professor of

Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry and CEO of Al Mashfa hospital.

CWP: Dr. Abdel Nasser, have you noticed a substantial increase in anxiety-based cases in the past few months?

Yes, definitely with the Covid-19 issue the rate of anxiety has increased in both my patients and the general population. Buts let’s differentiate between anxiety and depression symptoms and anxiety and depression disorders. Anxiety increases with people who are already predisposed to it. The main problem with Covid-19 is uncertainty. We are faced with tremendous stress. A lot of people first went into denial, saying it is some sort of conspiracy, that it doesn’t exist, but this has quickly been followed by anger and resentment at having to endure lockdown and social restrictions. This has been followed by depression, and now a phase of acceptance, with the widespread wearing of masks and social distancing. The realization has hit people that it is an equalizer, that it makes no difference how wealthy or influential you are, you can still contract Covid-19 like anyone else, so they are looking at a different meaning in their lives.

We must differentiate between anxiety symptoms and anxiety disorders, and depressive symptoms and depressive disorders. We are actually seeing an increase in the symptoms of anxiety and depression, not in the actual disorders. It is mainly the people who are predisposed to anxiety or OCD who will manifest the chronic stress symptoms.

Which issues are uppermost in people’s minds?

Apart from the actual virus, people are undergoing financial hardship, grief and a lack of social activity. Social interaction has always been a great lubricant for dealing with stress, where people can find relief from a bad marriage or difficult children by enjoying relaxing with friends. Now everyone in the family is locked down together, with no way to escape. So beyond the fear of the virus and fear of death, there is also the burden of social hardship, monetary pressures and marital discord.

How dangerous are anxiety and stress in terms of general health and the immune system?

Both anxiety and stress are very serious conditions. In order to have proper immunity in life you have to have the right mood. Our advice to people suffering from cancer, diabetes and other conditions is to maintain good spirits in order not to be impacted too much by the disease. The presence of anxiety and depression really affects the immunity of the body and its ability to heal. This can mean psychiatric disorders and other illnesses. Our psyche is well prepared to handle acute stress, but the problem lies in chronic stress, which is very debilitating to our physical and mental health, especially when we don’t know when it will end. When your immune system is weakened by chronic stress you are inviting many sorts of physical disorders. You can have a lot of disturbances in your blood glucose, your blood pressure, and develop complications in a variety of chronic conditions.

How does stress usually manifest?

When you are suffering from chronic stress you may see symptoms like heart palpitations, hand tremors, increased sweating, bowel problems like irritable bowel syndrome, breathing difficulty, and a disturbed sleep pattern. Other than these physical symptoms there may be edginess, irritability, a negative outlook and gloominess, a loss of focus and concentration and apathy in meeting challenges. While social interaction has always been considered a source of happiness, now it is linked with fear and anxiety, with people worrying about how to avoid contracting the virus, how to protect themselves and loved ones. People must make a conscious effort not to fall into this type of stress. With this interruption to normal face-to-face interaction, there can also be a level of paranoia. Critical situations can arise when people are dependent on WhatsApp and telephone calls, where misunderstandings can arise more easily.

How important is it to seek professional help when anxiety disrupts normal life?

You need to see a psychiatrist or psychologist when the symptoms you are suffering from affect your functionality. That means your social functionality, your mental functionality and your occupational functionality. Everyone can go through moods, but if you are starting to lose your grip with your work and social functions, you need to see a psychiatrist.

What are the dangers of self-medicating?

This is a serious problem, as Egyptians are known for self-medication. Medications available are safe when prescribed by a doctor, but there has to be a diagnosis first. A person cannot self-diagnose, it requires professional help. You shouldn’t take medication for psychiatric symptomatology; it is prescribed when needed for psychiatric disorders. By using medication without being under a doctor’s supervision you are risking turning yourself into a person dependent on medication, with a psychiatric disorder. Care must also be taken in the use of any substances like alcohol to cope with anxiety and help in falling asleep. In reality, alcohol can make things worse by increasing depression and anxiety. The same goes for marijuana and hash. They can create severe depression and cause amotivational syndrome, which creates lethargy, and a lack of motivation and direction. Heavy use of these substances can result in alcohol or cannabis psychosis which manifest as becoming very paranoid and suspicious of people around you, with associated delusions. Sleeping pills are another problem. You start with just one, as needed, and then it can become a habit.

What positive steps can you take to keep anxiety to a healthy level?

It is important to accept the stress and the situation and find tools to deal with it in a normal way. Try to live as usual, and go out, but with the social distancing guidelines like handwashing, wearing of masks and staying the required number of meters away from others. Recent studies have shown that around 60% of people who caught the virus were already staying at home. There are many positive aspects to social distancing, so make the most of your new leisure time. Make a wish list, catch up on books you never had time to read and movies you wanted to watch, and consider it some sort of partial early retirement. By all means, do some exercise at home or go out for a leisurely walk, wearing your mask and keeping a safe distance. Relax, and don’t push yourself to work and be overly productive unless you absolutely must. It is not a competition! The chance to spend time at home can be a gift, even if you have financial pressures through the Covid-19 situation. You can avoid the expense of going out, travelling and shopping, which means of course be careful about online shopping temptations.

Strengthen and Rebuild Your

Immune SystemEssential Nutrients

There’s a lot of uncertainty around these days when it comes to Covid-19. Whether you tested positive and rode out the storm, suspect you may have passed through it earlier in the year and passed it off as a rather strange flu bug, or have detected some mild symptoms and decided to self-isolate or go for testing, there is one thing you can be sure of. Your best defense is to make sure you stay as healthy as possible. Leading nutritionist Noura Hassaballa shares what you should know about the vital role each vitamin and mineral has to play in boosting our immunity levels and what foods provide them.

ViTamiN a

Vitamin A helps in the production of white blood cells in the bone marrow. It plays an important role in boosting immunity and fighting infection from viruses and bacteria.

Foods: Green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, red peppers, mango, apricots, papaya, cheese, eggs, liver, milk, yoghurt and oily fish like sardines, mackerel and salmon.

ViTamiN C

Vitamin C is important for growth and repair of tissues. Though it may not keep you from catching a cold, there is some evidence that high doses of vitamin C may decrease the length of cold symptoms by as much as one to one-and-a-half days for some people. However, other studies did not result in the same findings, and the risk of side effects is greater with high doses of vitamin C supplements. As an antioxidant it fights free radicals.

Foods: Strawberries, broccoli, guava, oranges, potatoes, tomatoes, kiwi, spinach and bell peppers.

iroN

Iron is crucial for the normal development of the immune system and necessary for immune cells proliferation and maturation, particularly lymphocytes which are associated with the generation of a specific response to infection.

Foods: Liver, red meat, beans, nuts, dried apricots, brown rice, dark green leafy vegetables (such as spring greens, kale and spinach).

ZiNC

Zinc keeps the immune system strong, helps heal wounds, and supports normal growth.

Foods: Whole grains, milk products, red meat, oysters, baked beans, nuts, poultry and chickpeas.

SeLeNium

Selenium lowers oxidative stress, which reduces inflammation and enhances the immune response.

Foods: Brazil nuts, fish, meat and eggs.

ViTamiN D

Vitamin D helps the immune system stay balanced. Our body produces most of the vitamin D we need when exposed to the sun. Although it’s found in very small amounts in foods such as oily fish, liver, egg yolks, red meat, fortified food, mushrooms and red meat, it’s better to take a vitamin D supplement. We should get at least 600 IU of vitamin D daily.

You should take supplements if you’re deficient in any of these, otherwise you should be able to get all of the necessary nutrients from a balanced diet.

To avoid contagion, it’s all about how strong your immune system is. If you have been practicing a healthy lifestyle for a while you should be fine. But that doesn’t mean going wild on supplements to avoid contagion. Overdoing supplements can be toxic and cause hypervitaminosis.

You may ask how long an immunity boosting diet or regimen should be continued for. The simple answer is that it should be an ongoing thing because it’s basically a lifestyle, not a one off.

Take into consideration some important lifestyle modifications:

•Quit smoking.

•Stop eating processed sugars and junk food or processed food.

•Use monounsaturated fatty ac ids (MUFA) in your diet, as found in avocado, nuts and olive oil.

•Sleep well.

•Reduce stress.

•Lose a few kilos and maintain a healthy weight if you’re over weight.

Oasis Clinics Brings You Telemedicine:What You Need to KnowFamily health has never been more important. And now, with Covid-19 spreading, any move outside the home, let alone a trip to the doctor, raises fear of contagion. We got together with Dr. Amr Hassan, Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Cairo University and Director of Oasis Clinics to learn more about the online consultations offered.

CWP: Dr. Amr, what can you tell us about telemedicine?

Dr. AH: This has been around for some time actually, with people using audio and visual communication tools, such as Skype. Two people can communicate, from the next room, the next city, or across the globe. It never really picked up before because it was always considered better for a doctor- patient consultations to be face-to-face. In some specialties it wasn’t considered workable, and that was the case, but now with the ongoing crisis, new solutions have been reached to meet the online requirement.

How can people register for a telemedicine consultation?

It is very easy to register, Oasis has four branches. You can reach our call center by contacting any one of these branches, and it will assist with the registration process. They can explain how the Zoom platform is used, the online payment process and all other procedures. They also send instructions by email, sms or WhatsApp. The call center will also request that any recent medical reports and test results be forwarded to the doctor so he or she can go over them prior to the online consultation.

What steps are involved?

An appointment is set up with the consultant, then no matter where the doctor is located at the time, the line is opened with the patient and they will have a 20 minute or longer consultation. Digital records of a patient’s medical history are kept with Oasis so the doctor will have a complete picture of any case. When the consultation is complete a diagnosis or course of treatment will be decided upon and a prescription will be sent by WhatsApp or email and the doctor will write up the notes to be added to the patient’s medical file. Test results come back to the doctor directly for follow up.

Is this as reliable as having an in-clinic consultation?

Oasis Clinics was one of the first institutions to respond to this need. In view of the Covid-19 situation, it was important to make consultations possible without risk to the patient or the medical team. In 50% of medical consultations a physical examination is not important, so it can be handled online. With the remaining 50 % we send a young doctor to the patient, to conduct any necessary examination or perform tests such as X-rays, electrocardiograms, ultrasound and laboratory tests and supply the professor or consultant with the missing information. This decreases the need for people to visit the clinic and assists in social distancing, as follow up can then be done online. The most stringent procedures are in place to prevent any possibility of cross-infection. We believe that even after Covid-19 has passed, online consultations will remain as a convenient option for many, especially as it gives the scope for treating multiple medical problems through integrated medicine consultations.

W E L L B E I N G

Covid-19 is a virus that has changed and is changing how we live our lives, from how we interact, travel, and eat, and now how we get our medical-care needs met.

It is a given that the world was moving ever so closer to a wireless future, but Covid-19 rapidly expedited this process, replacing classes with virtual classes, meeting rooms with online conference rooms, and the list goes on.

That is why at Tabibi, one of our most versatile and crucial services come to play, Telehealth.

Covid-19 or not, life had to keep going, and people needed to get their medical needs addressed. We made sure that with a click of a few buttons our patients could easily find the right doctor for their needs and directly get in touch with them. This ease of access ensures our patients’ needs are addressed without being there physically, solving a lot of issues that people might have faced before like being unable to get hold of a doctor during lockdowns or any other emergencies, or needing to make quick medical inquiries without a clinic visit, and most importantly having the availability of a quality doctor 24/7.

To make things even easier, our patients can reach a doctor either through www.tabibi247.com or through our hotline 16724. Our patients can also create an account on our website with their email and create a password, which is extremely encouraged by us as we move closer to creating a centralized medical recording solution for our customers soon, another huge leap, for another day.

“Can’t Catch an Emotion” digs deep into the emotional journeys of life, and love. Add the silky, velvety tone of Malak’s distinctive voice, and you have a surefire hit. Since entering the local music scene in 2014, she has steadily carved out a niche in the region’s burgeoning music scene with music that hits on the vulnerabilities of today’s Arab woman. Going from her debut EP release “Alters”, to a number of singles such as, “Wild Summer Hearts” and “Spirits of Time”, it didn’t take long for her music to hit the regional airwaves, and to date there have been over 1 million plays online.

Raised with the music of icons like C at Stevens, G uns & Roses and Dire Straights, Malak has nonetheless developed her own recognizable style, whi ch has sometimes dr awn comparisons with the languorous voice and introspe ctive lyrics of Lana Del Ray. Her unique talent has already seen her open for big names such as Oscar and The Wolf and Balthazar , and with a debut album slated for release in the summer of 2020, we can expect to hear a lot more of this mesmerizing young songstress.

“Can’t Catch an Emotion” is available to stream on Apple, Spotify, Anghami and more.

How often is a summer defined by one track that plays over and over in your head? Odds on, Malak’s latest release could be the one that stands out this year. The young singer/songwriter has come out with a personal but intensely relatable new single that will feature in her upcoming album.

Cyrus Kadivar is the author of Farewell Shiraz: An Iranian Memoir of Revolution and Exile, released in hardback in 2017, now out in paperback (AUC Press, 2019).

Born in Minnesota to Iranian-French parents, Cyrus Kadivar grew up during the Shah’s reign in the Persian city of Shiraz. At sixteen, he and his family were uprooted by the 1979 revolution. Today, Kadivar has worked as a banker, freelance journalist, and political risk consultant and lives in London.

“I have many wonderful memories of Shiraz. As a boy, I cherished hearing my grandparents, parents and older family members telling me anecdotes and tales of the past. Who would have thought that after the unexpected events that changed our lives so dramatically, I would become the sole repository of those stories, the only person to try to pass them on to a younger generation of Iranians, like my cousin born in 1979 who frequently asks me what it was like living under the Shah. Once at a party she introduced me to her friends in London as a person who had lived a fairy-tale existence before his family had to leave their big house and everything behind. Non-Iranians curious about my origins inevitably seek to delve into my former experiences with questions that require a long answer. How does one summarize an entire life and the history of a country in a few words? The answer is that you can’t, except to write, write, and write. Thus my book—a memoir and like all memoirs a deeply personal undertaking.

The world, of course, is filled with exiles and refugees, and I am not the only person pining for a Paradise Lost. However, every individual has a right to tell their story and record it as part of the human experience… in the end, it is all about memory. There are those moments, when I dream of an enchanting city cradled in the arms of the high mountains that surround it, a place filled with fun-seeking people and wine-loving poets, lovely gardens where cypresses stand tall, straight, and dense against a blue, cloudless sky; where the roses, splendid, and fragrant, are serenaded by the nightingales.

Farewell Shiraz is essentially a story divided into three distinct yet interweaving parts. The first part called Of Things Past draws heavily on my family history and picturesque recollections of growing up and my coming of age in pre-revolutionary Iran during the reign of two Pahlavi monarchs: Reza Shah and his son Mohammad Reza Shah and the early months of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s rise to power in the wake of his triumphant victory following the overthrow of the imperial order. The second part, Exile, deals with my displacement and the years of living in the West during which I pursued my obsession with trying to understand why I lost my country. Finally, in the third part entitled Witnesses and Survivors, readers will be introduced to a select group of men and women who were part of the last Shah’s inner circle or key spectators of the unfolding drama and subsequent catastrophe that was the Iranian Revolution.”

To start with, only hotels that abide by the hygiene safety regulations formulated by the Ministry of Tourism & Antiquities in accordance with the World Health Organization’s guidelines are permitted to resume operations.

These hotels have clinics with a resident doctor, protective kits and disinfecting materials to hourly disinfect surfaces and public areas, in addition to the availability of high-quality Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for both employees and guests.

Will there be special check-in procedures?Well yes. Firstly, e-bookings are made easier than ever with electronic payments and quick information-filling electronic forms. Once at the hotel, check-in procedures are done electronically or with disposable pens and all pieces of luggage are sterilized before entering the premise as well as at the end of your stay. And last but not least, regular temperature checks will be held every time the guests enter the hotel.

Here’s What To Expect During Hotel Stays:•Regular temperature checks for guests each time they

And all hotel workers and employees are educated on the virus symptoms and the basic precautionary measures against COVID-19 to help themselves and guests.

The Ministry of Health and Population will be running frequent routine checks on the opened hotels to make sure that they are abiding by guidelines and regulations set by the government and not overlooking any hygiene or preventive measures.

Hotels Authorized For Tourism: Standards and RegulationsIn an effort to reboost tourism, hotels have gotten the green light to reopen, however, with limited occupancy and with very high standards of sanitary and precautionary measures and regulations to once again safely welcome guests and employees.

In case you needed reminding, summer is here! With retrograde planets, the aftermath of some major eclipses and yep, that nasty little virus. But that shouldn’t stop you making the most of what July and August can offer. The right attitude can take you a long way.

Horoscopes

Happy Birthday,Cancer

Summer focus: Consider the other point of view!

Relationship matters have been a little tough recently, in terms of both responsibilities and

opposing viewpoints. You can be super-sensitive and moody, and this doesn’t always go down

well with people close to you. Let your feelings flow, but don’t share them with people who don’t

appreciate your kindness.

Happy Birthday,Leo

Summer focus: What do you mean, “First class is fully booked”?

A recent change of lifestyle is tough for some Leos to handle. It may actually manifest as a build-up of stress and depression, so be proactive and socialize

by phone and social media. Your natural humor and warmth could be just the tonic that others

need. Recent eclipses may have re-activated a past friendship, are you ready to start over?

Aries Summer focus: Work, work, work...

Much as you would love to kick back and relax with family and friends, it seems that you need to keep your nose to the grindstone for most of the summer. Recent eclipses have once again prompted you to allocate your time between chasing career goals and keeping harmony around the home.

Taurus Summer focus: Decisions, decisions…

When everything inside you is screaming that you just want to chill, spend time with friends and family, you have to face the grim reality that you need to be able to pay for it. That is when you have to make some compromises and get stuck into your work mode. Finances could be healthier and the recent eclipse has highlighted that.

Gemini Summer focus: Back to the drawing board.

A powerhouse eclipse last month has turned you upside down and inside out. The good news is that once you pick yourself up and shake off the dust you will have a clearer idea of what direction you want to head in, and the path looks open. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted, with vision and focus you can achieve a lot.

VirgoSummer Focus: Do not disturb!

Sorry to drag you out of your cocoon, but the outer world is calling your name again. You will need to find a comfortable balance that allows you enough home time yet keeps you in the loop career wise. Your communication skills are important to how you go forward this summer, choose your words carefully.

LibraSummer Focus: You gotta have friends!

All this social distancing is starting to seem sooo never-ending. You are nothing without human interaction, and staying home with only your own company just doesn’t hack it. Make a few short trips when you can, with plenty of nature and lively company, but stay safe!

ScorpioSummer focus: Time to balance the books.

Business may have taken a battering in the past months, and hey, you are not the only one suffering. But you don’t like being caught at a disadvantage, so you might want to sacrifice some new freedom and leisure opportunities for time recouping your losses. Then, when you feel more secure, you can take that trip out of town.

Sagittarius

Summer focus: Testing your boundaries.

All that freedom that you had taken for granted seems to be dwindling away. With lifestyle choices curtailed, you need to make psychological adjustments as well as a realistic budget. That doesn’t mean that good times are not available, just change your mind-set a little. Get creative with expanding your sources of income.

Capricorn

Summer focus: Get relationships back on track.

Recent months have seen you slip into survival mode. You, more than a lot of signs, have what it takes to knuckle down and make things work. But sometimes you sacrifice your emotional needs. Use this summer to re-bond with people who know your soft inner core and care about you.

Aquarius

Summer focus: Time to reconnect, selectively.

Have you considered that you may be getting too comfortable with social distancing? Enjoying your own space is one thing, but shutting the world out is another. Sort out which friendships and affiliations are still relevant to where you currently are in your life and politely extricate yourself from anything that is dragging you down.

PiscesSummer focus: Make dreams a reality.

Your ruling planet Neptune makes it easy for you to escape into a wonderful fantasy world where your imagination can roam free. Your task this summer is to keep those dreams close to your heart while you work out practical ways to turn them into something workable. Impossible? Give it a try and you may surprise yourself.

Fantastic Reads for Summer

by

A Theatre for Dreamers

By Polly Samson

1960. The world is dancing on the edge of revolution, and nowhere more so than on the Greek island of Hydra, where a circle of poets, painters and musicians live tangled lives.

Burning with the heat and light of Greece, A Theatre for Dreamers is a spellbinding novel about utopian dreams and innocence lost - and the wars waged between men and women on the battlegrounds of genius.

The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse

By Charlie Mackesy

Enter the world of Charlie’s four unlikely friends, discover their story and their most important life lessons. The conversations between the boy, the mole, the fox and the horse have been shared thousands of times online, recreated in school art classes, hung on hospital walls and turned into tattoos. In Charlie’s first book, you will find his most-loved illustrations and some new ones too.

Mrs. Everything

By Jennifer Weiner

In her most sprawling and intensely personal novel to date Jennifer Weiner tells a simply un-put-downable story of two sisters who, with their different dreams and different paths, offer answers to the question: How should a woman be in the world?

The Dutch House

By Ann Patchett

This is a story of two siblings, their childhood home and the past they can’t let go. Lose yourself in the story of a lifetime, where Patchett leads us to a truth that feels like life rather than literature.

Ask Again, Yes

By Mary Beth Keane

A story of love and redemption, faith and forgiveness, Ask Again, Yes reveals the way childhood memories change when viewed from the distance of adulthood - villains lose their menace, and those who appeared innocent seem less so. This is a story of how, if we’re lucky, the violence lurking beneath can be vanquished by the power of love.

Type of cuisine: Coffee house

Drinks sampled: We were in for a take away order on a Friday morning, greeted by friendly staff who were very eager to give us an overview of the different brewing methods and roast profiles. After getting familiarized with the difference between Freddo (ice cubes), Frozen Shakes and Cold Brew, we opted for more summery options. We started off with the iced version of the Spanish Latte which is a café con leche – equal parts coffee and milk. Ours was three layers of espresso shots, milk and milk foam, cooled by adding ice cubes. Surprisingly refreshing and delightfully balanced. The ice cubes did not make the coffee diluted and watery and you still taste the coffee to the last sip. Our second option was the Biscollino Oreo, which again we opted for the cold, decaf version of. The name is very suggestive – Oreo is always a crowd pleaser. Our drink looked like a milk-shake, with added chocolate sauce and crumbles of Oreo biscuits, a go-to for the sweet toothed. Along with our order we had a Frozen Caramel Frappe. The blend of caramel, coffee, ice and milk is heavenly creamy and slightly buttery. Last from the cold options we enjoyed very much was the cold brew of the Ethiopian beans. The slow process in which this method (cold brew takes 4 hours and then its bottled and stored in a fridge) works takes the most out of the beans and the Ethiopian is a light coffee which suited this method very much. To wrap up, we had a warm cup of the Spanish Latte. This drink, like many others, comes in cold and hot versions, with the hot version just as good as the cold one.

Other menu options that appealed: White Chocolate

Décor and ambience: Lovely interior, world map of coffee growers, wall graffiti. Very well-lit and spacious. There’s a wall display of coffee and tea for purchase just opposite the cashier.

Clientele mix: We would assume by the set up and atmosphere that you’d run into college students, groups of friends, the self-employed.

Price range: Mid-range.

Worth noting: Take away and delivery available for New Cairo only.

Type of cuisine: Mexican

Signature dishes: Fried Chicken Tacos, Beef Steak Tacos, and Churros

Dishes sampled: Nachos are a movie’s best friend; they go together like fish and chips, which is why we started our movie with crunchy Nachos and Gracias’s fresh dips. We enjoyed the zesty tomato salsa, peppery green salsa (made with cilantro and pepper), cheese dip and sour cream. We were then super eager to try the fried chicken tacos, which is basically fried chicken strips wrapped in corn flour based soft tortilla bread and crunchy white cabbage, went well with the cheese dip.

Time for Quesadillas! With a side of fresh pico de gallo drenched in olive oil, what could go wrong? The quesadilla was mouthwatering with a generous filling of chicken, onion and pepper slices all held together with melted cheese, we only wish it had been a tiny bit less oily.

For dessert, we dipped our Churros in yummy caramel sauce, the perfect sauce for churros. We prefer churros to be less crunchy and softer on the inside but for those who like the crunch it is perfect.

Punctuality: The order came on time, but the earlier you order the better.

Ease of ordering: You can order through the phone.

Food temperature: The quesadillas and tacos were warm so you better eat them right away before they get soft. The churros and nachos were room temperature and the dips were chilled.

Presentation: The movie meal combo is basically ready for you to just assemble and eat right away while on the couch watching TV. The colorful dips and sides make it look extra appetizing and are easy to handle.

Packaging quality: The nachos and quesadilla came in environmentally friendly paper boxes. Everything else was packed tightly. No spills or sogginess. Everything was placed separately to stay crisp and fresh and each dip came labelled. Everything was ready to serve straight out of the box.

Hygiene standards: The boxes were clean and neat. The delivery man wore gloves and a mask, which was very reassuring.

Other delivery options that appealed: The Shredded Chicken Burritos seem yummy.

Price range: Very reasonable.

Orders can be placed from 10 am (last pick up 5 pm and last delivery order 4:30 pm)

One OakGreat Sushi and Steak Delivered to Your DoorWe don’t know about you, but we are so over channeling our ‘inner chefs.’ It was time to leave it to the experts and stop slaving over a hot stove. A quick phone call and One Oak answered our prayers.

Type of cuisine: International

Signature dishes: Excellent sushi selection and melt-in-your-mouth juicy steaks.

Dishes sampled: Anyone who knows One Oak will include at least some of its exceptional sushi and sashimi in their order. There is a huge variety to choose from, all good in our experience, but on this occasion we opted for the range of New Style Nigiri and a variety of One Oak sushi and maki rolls. Every mouthful was an adventure, with perfectly fresh ingredients like eel, salmon, ginger, avocado, cream cheese and shrimp, with innovative touches like balsamic glaze and mango chutney along with the obligatory wasabi and pickled ginger. Just right for two to share!

For a change of mood we shared a generous serving of the new-on-the-menu Spicy Chicken Rolls. Imagine a warm, slightly chewy tortilla crammed with grilled chicken cubes, mozzarella cheese, red bell pepper, jalapeño pepper, sweetcorn, spinach and red beans, with a sweet chili sauce for dunking. No regrets there!

As we opened our main dishes we heaved a sigh of relief that we hadn’t gone overboard by ordering dessert. That would have been too much, by far! Our well-wrapped The Perfect Storm Burger came with a moist, tender beef patty, heaped high with mushrooms, grilled beef bacon, tomato, onion, lettuce and Swiss cheese, slathered in fry sauce. With generously cut fries on the side, it was everything we had hoped for.

The same can be said for the Angus Tenderloin Steak. Cooked medium rare as requested, it was still hot upon arrival, with large sides of oven-baked mashed potato, chunky fries, fresh al dente sautéed vegetables and a myriad choice of sauces. They were all tasty but it was the punchy, flavorsome pepper sauce that totally won us over.

Punctuality: A few minutes late, but that can be forgiven in peak traffic.

Ease of ordering: Easy to order through the phone. All preferences were carefully noted.

Food temperature: Everything arrived at the right serving temperature.

Presentation: We loved the chic black and white packaging and the well-sealed utensils. The dishes themselves were well presented within the limitations of the packaging.

Packaging quality: Sturdy, secure and well-sealed with cling film.

Hygiene standards: Excellent, with all items in pristine order. The delivery man was uniformed, wore gloves and a mask and adhered to social distancing guidelines.

Other delivery options that appealed: The Crispy Orange Chicken and Mongolian Beef both look inviting. And we would definitely order the sushi selection any day of the week.

Price range: Moderate upwards.

Worth noting: One Oak also offers a full catering service.

According to current conditions. Please call to check.

Type of cuisine: Italian

New menu dishes: Culurgiones (traditional stuffed ravioli from Sardinia), Risotto ai Funghi, Tagliata di Filetto alla Fiorentina.

Dishes sampled: Our preview of the new menu items was preset by Chef Giovanni. We were served two antipasti to share: Capesante Scottate on Vellutata di Cavolfiori and Carpaccio di Tonno, Salmone Affumicato. Four pan-seared sea scallops were served on creamy cauliflower puree, drizzled with pesto, with a very subtle drop of truffle oil and sprinkled with walnuts. The freshness of the sea scallop was unbeatable, they were sweet and tender, a simple yet elegant dish. Our second antipasti was the Carpaccio di Tonno, Salmone Affumicato, a duo of tuna carpaccio and smoked salmon dusted with red caviar and an amazing flower honey dressing accompanied by avocado sauce and a little green salad. Next came the mains, Grisaliata Mista di Pesce con Risotto al Limone and the chef’s special Tagliata di Filetto alla Fiorentina. The Lemon Risotto was outstanding and perfectly complemented the mix of seafood; grilled prawns, seabass, scallops and calamari - that accompanied it. Our second main was a long tender cut of American tenderloin cooked medium rare served with potato fondant, grilled red onion and oven baked garlic that makes it seems like butter. The cut of the meat itself was premium and the paired ingredients it was served with just enhanced its flavor and juiciness. We could not leave without rewarding our sweet tooth with two desserts. Semifreddo Gianduia and a lovely tangy Mousse al Limone capped off by two espressos. A perfect afternoon brunch.

Other menu options that appealed: We are curious about the Stuffed Ravioli which is one of the chef’s signature dishes, and we would love to come back for a pizza by the pool. They looked very appetizing coming out of the wood oven.

Beverages: Cold and hot beverages and a fully-fledged bar.

Décor and ambience: The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the hotel overlooking the patio and pool. The interior has a Tuscany classic feel, dark wooden tables, red leather chairs, wall paintings of idyllic Italian scenery and large glass Murano style drop chandeliers.

Social distancing and hygiene standards: Kempinski has taken this matter to the highest standards. The restaurant tables are set apart from a safe distance. The tables are equipped with hand sanitizers and the table is only set up when the clients are seated, meaning glasses and plates are not exposed beforehand and cutlery is served pre-packed in plastic wrapping. The staff is also wearing masks.

Clientele mix: Hotel guests, fine diners, couples.

Price range: Higher end which would be expected of a 5 stars hotel.

Worth noting: Available for take away.

Eat Healthy This Summer!

People who eat a well-balanced diet tend to be healthier with stronger immune systems and lower risk of chronic illnesses and infectious diseases. So make sure you eat a variety of fresh and unprocessed foods every day to get the vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, protein and antioxidants your body needs. Drink enough water. Avoid sugar, fat and salt to significantly lower your risk of overweight, obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain types of cancer.

Eat fresh and unprocessed foods every dayEat fruits, vegetables, legumes (e.g. lentils, beans), nuts and whole grains (e.g. unprocessed maize, millet, oats, wheat, brown rice or starchy tubers or roots such as potato, yam, taro or cassava), and foods from animal sources (e.g. meat, fish, eggs and milk).

Daily, you should eat 2 cups of fruit (4 servings), 2.5 cups of vegetables (5 servings), 180 g of grains, and 160 g of meat or beans (red meat can be eaten 1−2 times per week, and poultry 2−3 times per week).

For snacks, choose raw vegetables and fresh fruit rather than foods that are high in sugar, fat or salt.

Do not overcook vegetables and fruit as this can lead to the loss of important vitamins.

When using canned or dried vegetables and fruit, choose varieties without added salt or sugar.

Eat moderate amounts of fat and oilConsume unsaturated fats (e.g. found in fish, avocado, nuts, olive oil, soy, canola, sunflower and corn oils) rather than saturated fats (e.g. found in fatty meat, butter, coconut oil, cream, cheese, ghee and lard).

Choose white meat like poultry and fish, which are generally low in fat, rather than red meat.

Ingredients

•350 g white fish

•2 tablespoons olive oil, divided

•2 tablespoons butter

•1 tablespoon capers, well rinsed

•1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

•1 teaspoon lemon zest

•1 tablespoon fresh dill or flat leaf parsley, minced (or 1 teaspoon dried dill)

•1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, divided

•Freshly ground pepper

Preparation

Preheat oven to 150 degrees Celsius.

Place the fish in a lightly greased cast iron or roasting pan or a sheet pan lined with parchment. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil and sprinkle with salt and ground pepper. Bake for approximately 15 minutes until the fish is opaque and flakes easily with a fork.

While the fish is cooking, place the remaining oil and butter in a small saucepan and melt the butter. Add the capers and continue cooking for less than 1 minute, just until the capers are aromatic. Then take the sauce off the heat, add the lemon juice, zest, dill, salt and pepper.

Once the fish is done and plated, serve topped with sauce.
