Who is a leader?A leader is a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal; thus, leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.

3 facts to note about leadership

• Leaders are not born, they are made.• Leaders are not bosses, they are influencers.• Leadership is not about position, it is about service and responsibility.

Why do we need leaders?• Leaders make life better by choosing the right choices for us without

them we would be disorganized people.• We need leaders because they fight for peoples rights.

THEORIES OF LEADERSHIP3 theories would be discussed using the 3-letter Acronym PET:• PERSONALITY theory: Some personality traits may lead people naturally into

leadership roles. This is the Trait Theory.

• EVENTS theory: A crisis or important event may cause a person to rise to the occasion, which brings out extraordinary leadership qualities in an ordinary person.

• TRANSFORMATIONAL theory: People can choose to become leaders. People can learn leadership skills. This is the Transformational or Process Leadership Theory. It is the most widely accepted theory today and the premise on which this guide is based.

• They are the basic characteristics, requirements and DO’s for becoming a good leader in the present and later in the future.

• Discipline: principled, self tamed and moderately self willed.

• Diligence: hard working, consistent and committed.

• Dignity: honest, having high self-esteem, self worth, and integrity, altruistic.

• Duty: taking responsibility.

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD LEADER

• A good leader has an exemplary character. A leader must be trustworthy and humble enough to lead others.• A good leader must be Passionate about his/her work or cause.• A good leader must be confident. Only confident people can instill confidence into

others.• A good leader must be responsible; taking responsibilities.• A good leader must be a critical thinker.• A leader must be organised. Must be a planner.• A good leader must be flexible• A good leader must be tolerant.• A good leader must be hardworking.

them.

• Dishonesty – Since character counts highest, a good leader must be above reproach. When a leader fails,

he or she must admit their mistake and work towards restoration.

• Ungratefulness - Good leaders value people, knowing they cannot attain success without others.

• Favouritism - Good leaders don’t have favorites on the team. They reward for results not partiality.

• Laziness – good leaders work hard; in fact, a leader should be willing to be the hardest worker on the team.

• Jealousy – A good leader enjoys watching others on the team excel.

• Defensiveness – Good leaders aren’t afraid to be challenged, they don’t wear their feelings on their shoulders.

• Revenge – A successful leader must be forgiving, knowing that “fighting back” only comes back to harm them and the team.

• Fearfulness – The good leader remains committed when no one else is and must take risks no one else would dare.

• Small-mindedness – Good leaders think bigger than the present time. They dream really big!• Rigidity - For most issues, the leader must be open to change, although a leader must be rigid

about certain things such as values and vision.• Unresponsiveness – Good leaders don’t lead from behind closed doors. They are responsive to

the needs and desires of those they attempt to lead.

Conclusion • Leadership is an act of service. It requires selflessness.• The characteristics of leaders stem directly from the greatest of

leaders:
