Is a Tablet a Mobile?

• Gary Schwartz explains in his latest book Fast Shopper, Slow Store about tablets vs mobiles:

• "Tablets immobilize people."• Because you usually stop, sit

down and use the tablet two -handedly, whereas mobiles can be used while walking, singlehandedlySource: book Fast Shopper, Slow Store by Gary Schwartz 2013

Tomi says: So a Tablet is not ‘a mobile’ - a tablet is

in fact an ‘anti-mobile’

Phablets 1 in 4 Smartphones• Deloitte reports on phablet (smartphones with

screen size from 5 inches to 6.9 inches) sales• in 2013 it was 150 million or 15% of all

smartphones• in 2014 it will be 300 million or 25% of all

smartphones soldSource: Scoop NZ 16 Jan 2014

Tomi Suggestion:• Provide you ministers with large-screen but non

Apple (non Blackberry) Android based smartphones. • Large screen/phablet makes it easy to show one or

two people things on the phone (also thus cannot be Blackberry).

• Provide tons of VIDEO religious content to show on that screen

• Then it must have two functionalities: microSD card slot and Bluetooth. Why? Because this is how people share content (and thus cannot be iPhone)

• (oh and why Android? Maximum practical apps and content for your ministers)

Tomi Suggestion:• Offer phone recharging at you churches in Africa and

less-developed parts of Asia• Make sure you have plenty of power supplies for

Nokia (3 different Nokia plugs) remembering one in six mobile phone owners in Emerging World has a second hand (ie very old) mobile phone and by far most of those will be Nokia branded

• Also build your charging station so, that you chargers cannot be easily stolen...

Tomi Suggestion:• Provide you ministers with portable battery-powered

pocket rechargers for mobile phones. • When they visit a home (without electricity) or visits a

congregation member(s) in the open spaces, they can help them by offering to recharge their phones while they talk religion...

• They get their R&R: Redemption and Recharging...

Marketers Behind on Mobile• Forrester 2014 survey of marketing professionals:• 42% are employed in companies so new to mobile,

they are still building their first mobile strategy or it is less than a year old

their customers. Of those that do, most only measure mobile web banner ad clicks

• 41% don’t even know own customers’ attitudes to and uses of mobile

• Then you add voice calls

• And MMS• In Africa and where its practical, also USSD• In Europe, USA and rich parts of APAC: mobile web• Only when those covered do you consider:

– apps, videos, QR codes, Augmented Reality etc

Tomi Suggestion:• In missionary work in areas of obscure languages:• Use CAMERA and VIDEO on minister’s smartphone

to capture local language speakers do impromptu translations of the verses in Bible

• Use MINIMUM data resolution for those videos

• Then save them per Bible passage name & number• And share with congregation. Many will have basic

video capacity and some memory to save these files.• Eventually you’ll have the whole Bible done in video

files in that language by ‘citizen translations’• (If there are two people recording, use best resolution

video for second recording but always lowest resolution for primary recording)

Obama 2012 SMS Volunteers• The Obama 2008 campaign used social media and

mobile very successfully. For 2012 they turbocharged their efforts. One of their most ingenious ideas was the recruiting of SMS volunteers on election day

• "Would you like to make one call to support President Obama today? We'll send you one phone number."

• Campaign achieved 10% conversion of targeted Obama supporters so out of 64M voters, about 6.4M made this call. If SMS activation results in 50% success in voting, 3.2M votes were generated this way - Obama's margin of victory was about 5M votes. Source: Communities-Dominate.blogs.com Nov 22, 2012

Tomi Suggestion:• Use SMS to find activist supporters• So any Church leaders meetings, committees, do like

the Obama campaign always did at their start:

• At start of meeting tell the people gathered: look around, see who is here and who is not. Everybody can think of one person who should be here who isn’t. Lets send them an invitation SMS for next meeting.

• This makes SMS right from the start an integral part that every member knows how to use (often older people not as comfortable with the tech, so younger members can help)

Page 47: Keynote: Future of Mobile

www.tomiahonen.com

Twitter: @tomiahonen

Tomi Suggestion:• And DUH• Obviously

• Use SMS as reminder a few hours before mass on Sunday or whenever is whatever important meeting next

• Make those easy to forward by initial recepients to non-regular members too, so include the individual Church or meeting place address and starting time

• Make sure your ministers and their staff have unlimited SMS or maximum SMS allowances on their phone accounts
