Transcript of Key Club Jamaica: District Bulletin 1st Quarter
―……To me servant leadership is a good way to
describe the coaching role that managers are
expected to play today to help their people
win. Judging and evaluating people erodes
their self-esteem; servant leadership builds self-
esteem and encourages individual growth
while obtaining the organization’s objectives.
Servant leadership is something that people
need. We need to support and help individuals
in the organization to win. The days of the
manager being judge, jury and critic rather
than cheerleader, facilitator and listener are
over.
The concept of servant leadership is a
wonderful way of symbolizing what the
manager of today—and of the future— is
going to have to be successful.‖

Name: Leila Green Division: Three
Green - This exemplifies tranquility and calm attributes, it denotes balance and stability
as well as harmony. These qualities i believe symbolize who I am and what I stand for. I
desire balance and stability in all things and I’m calm in doing so. I believe in working
with people in harmony - that prevents confusion and chaos - so we all can achieve
together!

I currently attend Campion College and I’m
in lower six where I do the humanities and
social sciences. I’m involved in a lot of co-
curricular activities but Key Club has my
heart and I feel truly privileged to be a part
of an organization that enables me to
change the lives of others and to interact
with people from all walks of life. Let’s get a
bit personal! Here are five tid-bits about me,
I’m an only child, I love small animals
(especially kittens), I almost poisoned myself
once when I was a toddler mistaking rat
poison for candy (true story :|) , I know how
to drive and I’m a huge fan of Fidel Castro.

Hello Key Clubbers! Has it really been three months
since District Convention? Time is just flying! I sometimes
forget that we only have one year to accomplish all
the goals that we’ve set out for ourselves. Being your
governor has been quite the experience thus far and I
only hope to continue on this positive path of service,
fun and fellowship which brings us all together. I’m
curious though, What does Key Club mean to you?
To me Key Club is so much more than an afterschool
club, it’s a way of life and a constant source of
inspiration, excitement and comfort. Many of you may
feel this way also but whenever I’m doing something
for my community, high school or nation I always feel
good about myself because I believe that I’m making
a difference one service hour at a time. This is what I
hope to pass on to every key clubber I meet. I love how
dedicated each of you are to this organization and if I
accomplish nothing else as district governor I would be
content to retire next year knowing that our district has
placed an increased value on COMMUNITY SERVICE
and SELF GROWTH rather than the aesthetic pleasures
of simply being in key club.
So this year everyone I challenge you to be creative,
be daring and most importantly GET INVOLVED. Expect
great things from your district board key clubbers just as
how we expect great things from you. EACH and
EVERY one of you is a part of a Key Club family and you
should always be ready to welcome others into our
family. Key Club is for me, Key Club is for you, Key Club
is for everyone.
Have an amazing summer everyone and don’t be
afraid to call/text/ping/facebook/skype/email me ! Go
ahead and stalk us. Yours in friendship and service,
Jodie-Ann Dunn
Governor

Hello Key Clubbers! Let me take this opportunity to
officially thank you all for your support at the recently held
District Convention. Now that the dust has settled, I must
say that I am still overwhelmed and therefore the more
enthused to help propel this district to greater heights.
Surely any achievement will not be possible without your
full support and cooperation. I look forward to having your
full participation in our district projects, Kiwanis events,
divisional services, and in sending your REPORTS on time.
Woot!
Our aim for this year is sustenance in maintaining the
active status of our clubs, reactivating inactive and
suspended clubs, and to have greater participation of the
membership from each club. I would like to plead
therefore that each of you will make it your priority to aim
to attend every project your club organizes even if you
may not be able to stay for the entire service. We want
outsiders to be impressed by the zest and vigor of the
clubs and their members.
The new Key Club year has officially begun in May, and as
we celebrate its inception, revel in our new positions, and
bask in the sensations; I remind you that there is work to be
done. Nevertheless, you are not alone; I assure you that
the Kiwanians and the District board are committed to
helping you. Secretaries and Treasurers feel free to
contact me about any uncertainties in your duties, I have
open ears and an open heart ready to serve you.
I wish for you all a peaceful, productive and enlightening
year as we endeavor to serve our home school and
community with much passion, grace and love.
Yours in loving service,

With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to
eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of
nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The
effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful
convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.
To eliminate MNT from the Earth by 2015, 129 million mothers and their future babies
must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation,
thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million — and the dedicated
work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.
Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one
of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, they are
eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. And in doing so, the project will reach the
poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care.
The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many
families.

The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held
within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund, utilizing the interest earned, helps
Key Clubs and Key Club members serve the world through grants for service
opportunities. The Fund also enables members to improve themselves by providing
academic scholarships for higher education. The fund is established through a portion
of your KCI dues and through the purchase of G. Harold Martin Fellowships. YOF grants
can help you take action. Look around and identify the things that need to get done in
your school, community or world. Key Clubs have applied for grant funds to support
many varied service projects. YOF Funds are granted only to Key Clubs and/or club
members. There is only one funding cycle for the Youth Opportunities Fund. The
application must be received by October 15 each year. Clubs may request funding
assistance from $200 to $2,000. The committee typically funds those clubs who are
asking for a portion of the total cost of the project, and clubs who are working with
other organizations to fund and complete the project. Notification of the Key Club
International Board’s decision will be mailed no later than January 15.
Applications must be submitted to Kiwanis International, 3636 Woodview Trace,
Indianapolis, IN USA, 46268 or via fax to (317) 879-0204. (The YOF Grant application is
included in the Downloads section of the Key Club Web site under Contests and
Awards. The guidelines for filing the application are in the Guidebook under Board
Policies.
Please review them before completing the application.

Since 1925, Key Club International has provided more than 12 million hours of service to
homes, schools and communities each year. From building bridges, to collecting over
six tons of food, thousands of dollars raised for cancer research, helping eliminate
iodine deficiency disorder, Key Club International plays a vital role in serving the
children of the world.
Every Key Club has the authority to select its own service projects because there usually
are many more service needs in a community than there are service clubs and
agencies to meet them. However, all Key Clubs are asked to participate in the Major
Emphasis Program (MEP): ―Children: Their Future, Our Focus.‖
―Children: Their Future, Our Focus‖
In 1946, Key Club International challenged all Key Clubs and members to focus energies
on making an international impact. This program is still followed today through the
Major Emphasis Program: ―Children: Their Future, Our Focus.‖
To fulfill the mission of the MEP, Key Club International serves children in many ways. By
working with Key Club International’s partner organizations, Key Clubs serve children by
aiding other organizations committed to serving children. Key Club International
celebrates its three partnerships: UNICEF, March of Dimes and Children’s Miracle
Network.
Key Club’s service initiative
The Key Club service initiative is an element of the MEP and is created on a two-year
basis. All of the hands-on service provided to children by Key Club International
members is directed to a single area of need, to make a substantial impact.
The 2008-10 service initiative is Live 2 Learn.
* Assisting five to nine year olds to overcome learning obstacles.
* Enabling these students to be successful and give back to their community.

In 1974 the Kiwanis Club of Kingston under the leadership of the President Milton
Weller and Chairman Michael Henrique's, built the first Key Club in Jamaica,
namely ―Kingston College Key Club.‖ in the early1980’s the Eastern Canada and
the Caribbean District Board and Governor were of the opinion that the growth
of Key Club in Jamaica made it difficult to manage together with those in
Eastern Canada. The Governor visited Jamaica with a proposal to form a
Caribbean District. Jamaica made a counter proposal that they would gladly
agree to a Jamaica District and accept the challenge of administering a
Jamaica District only.
On Saturday October, 1985 an all island Key Club Meeting was held at the
Ocho Rios High School. The purpose of which was to establish ―Key Club District
of Jamaica.‖ The following were the resolutions were adopted:
* The Official name of the district ―Key Club District of Jamaica‖
* The By-laws of the District
* The District Dues J$10.00 per member
* Governor Andrew Pairman, Meadowbrook High School
* Secretary Treasurer Janet Walker, St. Catherine High School
* Administrator Michael Henrique's
The meeting concluded the requirement of Kiwanis International. The Jamaica
District recognize the support of DLGE Lloyd Distant, Ryland Grant, all Presidents
and club members

Riddle
A bus driver was
heading down a street
in Colorado. He went
right past a stop sign
without stopping, he
turned left where there
was a "no left turn" sign
and he went the wrong
way on a one-way
street. Then he went on
the left side of the road past a cop car. Still - he didn't break any
traffic laws. Why not?
First Person to answer this riddle will receive a prize courtesy of the district. Simply email
the correct answer to DBE Chris ([email protected]) with your contact information

Six Personal Gifts to Control Your Own Destiny and Stay Great
Never give your power away. You have six personal gifts to control your own destiny and stay great.
Greatness is being responsible, and doing what is expected of you. To be in control of your own destiny you
must be pro-active. Life takes place in a decision. When you take action to make something happen, stuff
is going to happen. What to do about what happens, after you make something happen is where you take
control. When stuff happens that you did not plan on, that is opportunity knocking.
First personal gift: Knowledge - Without knowledge you will have no power to take action. Build on the
knowledge already have. Learned knowledge is power. Observe, listen, read, smell, taste, touch, practice,
practice, and practice. I am willing to listen, learn, and change how I think. Think big. It does not cost
anything to think big. When you think big, you are taking care of yourself. When you think small you are
focusing on your ego. The self always thinks big.
Second personal gift: Grace – You must request grace (permission)
You must have permission from yourself. Without permission you will procrastinate. You will sit and wait.
Those who hesitate are lost.
Third personal gift: Authority – You must enjoy your authority to say yes or no! Without authority someone
else is running the show. You are the authority in your life, nobody thinks in your mind. You are the center
that watches and runs the show that can choose which way it will go. I am consciousness. Take charge of
your own destiny. Guess what? Now what?
Fourth personal gift: Spirit – You must nurture your Sprit. It is so important because it brings energy and
excitement. Spirit must grow because the opportunities will grow as times go on. Spirit is the greatest unused
power on earth. Music can put wings on the human spirit. That's the spirit!
Fifth personal gift: Commitment – You must strengthen your commitment to yourself. Without commitment
there is no long-term persistence. Persistence creates desire and builds knowledge. Knowledge must build,
because of so much opportunity. One must have a heart-felt commitment in any endeavor they
undertake. Be committed to yourself. The commitment you have to yourself is the commitment you will
have to your family, your profession, your community. Love is a feeling of commitment. Commitment is a
joining of forces.
Sixth personal gift: Opportunity – You must seize opportunity. Realize that problems are only opportunities
based on how you view them. If you can't do anything, pray for someone else. If you can't pray, ask others
to pray for you. If possible, do something. Faith without work is dead. Problems are sometimes opportunities
for you to keep control of your own destiny.
