Christmas with

Terry Smith

From the Chairman — First, a big thank you to all who supported our fund-raising efforts last month; Marian and I also gathered a useful sum in donations at the annual Stroke Day Exhibition at the Cornmarket Hall, and a lot of teddies and their friends found new homes. (All together: aaah.) More knitted characters and Christmas cards are available again this month. Any other Groups who wish to have a table for their wares at any time, just let Marian know. Thank you, too, to everyone involved in the Quiz and for all the helpful feedback. Please may I remind Group Leaders that not only Christmas cometh on apace, but so do the half-yearly financial reports. Could I also ask any members who theoretically belong to a Group but who, for one reason or another, no longer attend to let the Leader know? This is especially important for Groups that are oversubscribed or have waiting lists. So as not to end on a minatory note, I met the other day a lovely lady, new to the area, who leads a non-U3A craft group but could be tempted into the U3A for Mah Jong! Any takers? Talk to me.

News — Interest Groups — Visits and Reports

Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who

meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we pay £2 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments. Busy Needles — is now formally up and running.

There are currently five of us, including me, clicking away round my dining table on alternate Thursdays (viz first and third in the month) from 10am to noon. Sue – I can’t knit – Perkins has learned to cast on and do garter stitch. Hurrah. Others are making squares, huge ones, for a special charity, knitting jumpers or fulfilling commissions. Very therapeutic. We still have room for a couple more members. If interested, please let me know. Next meeting November 20

th.

Bookworms — The Bookworms discussed their

enjoyment of "Oh Dear Sylvia" at the October meeting. Whilst described as funny, it was in fact rather a sad story. The next read is "The Book Thief" which will be discussed at our meeting in November. We will be watching the DVD in the new year to see how it compares.

Card Making 1 — Thank goodness I was well

enough to welcome everyone back to card making again this month. It was very much down to Christmas and everyone was busy making very seasonal delights. It never ceases to amaze that out of the resources that we have, so many different cards are produced. Once again I would like to thank everyone for their kindness and concern when I was so unwell. The next meetings are on Dec 2nd and Dec 3rd, usual time, usual place, and I might be tempted to play carols!!?

Card Making 2 — What a wonderful time we all

had with Anne. We started the morning making robin Christmas cards using felt and card. All of us were given the same items and yet we produce 7 different cards. Refreshed with coffee, and with the discussion of the visit to the poppies at the Tower of London, we made our own poppies which we proudly wore at the U3A meeting. Anne provided us with a fantastic lunch with wine. After lunch a new skill was learnt. Zentangle. The group was silent while working on this art of; line drawing in spaces, Doodling in the gaps and block working . All of us were so keen to continue that Anne provides us with extra pictures to work on at home. I hope everyone has been practising.

Canals & Waterways — Twenty one of us enjoyed a short trip to Gloucester Docks. The weather was very kind to us until we were due to leave Gloucester Cathedral and the heavens opened. We met on the Wednesday evening and invaded a local pub The Ship, who rose to the challenge and fed us all. On the Thursday we had a variety of trips on offer including: a visit to the Canal Museum, a boat trip, a visit to Gloucester Cathedral (which had an impressive Art display) and a Folk Museum. A good time was had by all. Our next meeting is on Thursday 20th November at 2.0pm at North Park Pavilion. This is our annual planning meeting so come along with your ideas for what you would like to do next year and enjoy free refreshments. I have booked places for our Christmas lunch at Foxton Locks Inn and will need your choices by 20th November. I will have the menus available at the meeting on the 20th and at the U3A meeting in November

Computer Group —

I have been spending the lottery grant on computers and had “fun” setting them up. Each new laptop had over 200 Windows updates to apply before it was stable! Each laptop took over 2 days to get to a usable state. My Apple Mac to 5 minutes to set up when it was new over 5 years ago and it’s still running faster than all these new Windows machines.

This grant will allow the computer group to be more interactive for those without laptops to bring along, the projector and screen will allow me to book a room anywhere, cheaper or free. We had our first meeting at ASDA and it went off smoothly and Dorothy used one of the lottery laptops. We were in very nice comfortable room with free tea and coffee. See ASDA access details on web site. By the time you read this we will have had our last meeting at the Fuller Church. From now on we will meet at ASDA Kettering. The last meeting of 2014 will be Tuesday 2nd December at ASDA. Details on the web site below. More sessions will be announced in the next newsletter and web site.

Any U3A member wanting a personal copy of Microsoft Office Professional 2013 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Access, Publisher) can get a licenced copy for just £56 instead of £350. (Note: Office 365 is from £48 per year, every year) Information and videos from previous sessions at www.U3AComputerGroup.co.uk Contact: Richard Boyles 01536 744 753 e-mail: [email protected] As always, you can contact me for any computer related advice or problems.

Country Matters — Our October visit was to

Irchester Country Park, we enjoyed another glorious day although it was terribly windy walking from the Carpenters’ Arms to the country park. Once there we did a circuit noticing plenty of different trees and looking at the geology of the park which was once an ironstone quarry. Also discussed how the ‘hill and dale’ formations came to be and saw half of a Roman sarcophagus lid which was discovered during excavations of the quarry. Many of us enjoyed lunch afterwards in the pub. November’s trip to Eyebrook Reservoir will already have taken place – arranged for 11 December is a walk around Wicksteed park taking in the lake and wildlife, lunch afterwards in The Piper – see you there at 10.30 in the pub car park for a short walk to the park.

Discussion Group — A very interesting discussion in

October around the topic of Dementia and the lack of funding for this increasing illness. Several members produced enlightening statistics which highlighted the problems faced by carers. We heard some moving stories from members who had relatives affected by the disease and in one case a patient had donated their brain for research. This certainly gave food for thought. The Alzheimers Society is definitely a charity desperately in need of donations for increased research. A good afternoon and a big thanks to Annette for leading the topic. The November meeting will be discussing "The News". The December meeting is arranged but Jan will be telling us all about it on Tuesday. The meeting will be on Tuesday 9th December at 2pm at The Parish Church Rooms.

Friday Pop-in - We were made very welcome at our

new venue of the Cransley Coffee Shop. A huge , BIG thank you to all members who supported me. A grand total of 12. The area that the coffee shop could provide with that number of members was small and snug. In the New Year, if the support continues, we may have to look for a larger venue. I hope to see you all next month.

Lunch Club — Christmas Special Date for your Diary Tuesday 2nd December 2014 - 11.30 am for 12 Noon. This year we will be returning to the Masonic Hall in Corby to celebrate Christmas with our special lunch. It has proved particularly successful so we will be going back there again. Maps will be available nearer the time for those joining us for the first time or for those who need a reminder. As space is not a problem the event is not confined to lunch club regulars so please bring your spouse or friends to what will no doubt prove a fitting introduction to the festive season. ( I’m sorry to introduce the subject of Christmas so early in the year! ) It will be a traditional Christmas Lunch with Soup, followed by Turkey, Potatoes, Roast Potatoes, Chipolatas and Vegetables in season. Followed by Christmas Pudding with Brandy Sauce and Mince Pies. There will be tea or coffee provided for those who want it. Christmas crackers and things seasonal will be on the table. The cost will be a specially negotiated £15 and a £10 deposit will reserve your seat. Bookings are being taken now. If having booked you find you cannot go then every endeavour will be made to sell your seat. As the Corby Masonic Complex has plenty of car parking spaces parking should not present a problem but please car share if possible.

Knit and Natter - Another two knit & natter mornings

have gone by, thanks to all my fellow knitters for making them so enjoyable. We raised £32 from sales at the U3A last month and now must decide where the money is going.

First Aid — Although not a legal requirement, the

committee thought it a good idea if any member was a first aider, could make their skill known, just in case of any emergency during the monthly meetings. Thank you.

Looking at Churches — In October we went to Geddington church, which was our second visit at the request of some of the group, as it has so much history. At one time there was a Royal Palace in Geddington and at least six monarchs have visited this church. Also the body of Queen Eleanor was kept there overnight before being taken on the long journey to Westminster for burial. Our tour started at the Eleanor Cross, with the story of King Edward and his great love for his wife Eleanor. Our guide was a real historian & told us many tales about the various tombs, windows & brass rubbings in the church. It was a very interesting afternoon. Our next church visit will be to Great Bowden, near Market Harborough, on Wednesday, November 19th at 2.0pm. There will be no tour in December, as most churches are very busy in 3rd week of December.

Contact: Janet Clements 01536 507721 or [email protected]

Lunch Club — enjoyed the October lunch at the Red Lion in Broughton, our thanks to Jean and John Lewis for organising this for us. There is no lunch in November as it is too close to our Christmas lunch on Tuesday Dec 2

nd which Ray has organised as usual.

We have started to collect the volunteer names for 2015 and have five months covered already, just a few more required which we will hopefully collect in January. Thanks to those who have put their names forward already, however it would be nice to see some fresh blood on the paper, not literally you understand. Meanwhile looking forward to seeing you all at the Christmas lunch. New Members - We visit a different venue each month on the forth Tuesday of the month. A menu is provided at the U3A meeting the week prior for you to make a choice and payment is not required until the day. New members are very welcome to join us, we are a very friendly bunch. See our Lunch Club table at the meeting.

Musical Circles 2 — The theme for the October

meeting of Musical Circles 2 was "Strictly Italian". Sixteen Italian-born composers were selected and arranged in chronological order by birth date. First was the Gloria from Palestrina's "Missa Papae Marcelli", and this was followed by the Credo from Monteverdi's "Messa A 4 Da Cappella", a Canzona by Cavalli, an extract from Corelli's Concerto Grosso Op.6/2, a keyboard sonata by Domenico Scarlatti, a piece from one of Torelli's trumpet concertos, an aria from "Bella Madre dei Fiori" by Alessandro Scarlatti, an Albinoni sonata, the Allegro from Vivaldi's Flute Concerto RV89, and the Largo from Boccherini's Sting Quintet Op.25/6. After a break for refreshments the afternoon continued with an aria from Salieri's opera "La Secchia Rapita", Minuetto Pastorale by Clementi, and finishing off with four opera extracts, namely Rossini's "La Cenerentola", Donizetti's "Lucia Di Lammermoor", Verdi's "La Forza Del Destino" and finally the closing monologue in Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi". It was really interesting to see how Italian music had changed and developed over the almost 400 year span between the birth of Palestrina in 1525 and the death of Puccini in 1924. The date and venue for the November meeting has yet to be confirmed.

Musical Circles 1 — We had a Shakespeare theme. 3 different approaches to capturing the romance of Romeo & Juliet in date order of composition. The Introduction and love scene from the Roméo et Juliette operatic choral symphony by Hector Berlioz. Fantasy Overture Romeo & Juliet by Tchaikovsky, West Side Story Symphonic Dances by Leonard Berstein. After the tea break we listened to Overture to Macbeth by Verdi, and Incidental Music From A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelssohn.

Photography Group — For once the weather forecast was correct - wet, cold and windy. So it was fortunate that we had postponed our proposed visit to Summer Leys Nature Reserve and instead met at the Group Leader's house for some Photoshop tuition. This proved very fruitful, and covered a wide range of topics, including image resizing and resolution, adjusting levels and histograms, cloning and using the repair tools, applying gradients, and the difference between JPEGs and PSD files. Everyone (hopefully) learned something new to practise on their images when they are at home. For our next meeting we shall again try to visit Summer Leys Nature Reserve, but another Photoshop session is likely if the weather gods are against us again. Because of holidays the meeting will take place in the second week of the month, namely Monday 10th November at 2.00pm. One of our group has moved to pastures new, so once again we are in the position of having room for up to two more members. We are an active photography group, preferring to be out and about photographing so you would need to be able to find your way to our venues, which usually include local villages, country parks, nature reserves and interesting towns.

Spanish Conversation — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. The next meeting is on 12 November because of how the dates work. We have the use of a training room free of charge so our sessions continue to be free. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students We are now at full capacity. However, we would be happy to start a waiting list but because of the level our members are at, having completed two years of study, new students would need to have a reasonable knowledge of basic Spanish.

Singing For Pleasure — Wintry weather, coughs and

sneezes, notwithstanding we are well into Christmas music rehearsals with several “gigs” on the near horizon and into January. Last month by highways, byways, (and slightly odd ways, in my case) a goodly number of us made our way to Barnwell Village Hall at the invitation of Oundle U3A's singers, who gave us a very warm welcome. Each Group entertained the other, then joined together in a medley of songs and rounds. A most enjoyable way to spend a wet, windy, very autumnal afternoon. Thanks are due to Linda for stepping in as accompanist during Carol's house move, and very best wishes to Carol and Merlyn in their new home. Contact: Jill Dee 01536 514 054

Walking Group - Nineteen members assembled at the

Lamb at Harrowden to take part in the November walk. The route took us across the fields to Orlingbury through parts of the village not seen by passing motorists. We then took the footpaths across the fields to Hardwick and had quick look round this tiny village, then back across the fields to the Lamb and a very nice lunch. Next months walk is on Wed the 3rd of December. Meet at at Stanwicks Lakes visitor centre in time for a 10.15 start

Writers Group — is thriving and so well that we have reached a point where if everyone on the register were to attend en masse we would not be able to give each member’s work the attention it deserves. Eight is about the optimum. Theoretically we are twelve with two more interested “possibles”. There are options that might serve, such as having an alternative Group for complete beginners or creating a waiting list. Meanwhile, will anyone who no longer is able or wishes to attend please let me know? Next meeting December 2

nd from 2 to 4pm in the Parish Rooms.

Topic for December: MEDITATION Find a place to sit where you will not be disturbed. Sit for 10 minutes, eyes closed, senses alert, aware of your surroundings. At the end of 10 minutes (use a kitchen timer perhaps?) write down your thoughts, what you heard, anything else your senses picked up. Don’t try to establish an order at this point; just write for two minutes. Now look at the list and write a poem. NO, IT NEED NOT RHYME NOR HAVE A REGULAR METRE. Contact: Mary Wildman 01536 741222

I Know A Place By Elizabeth Toseland I know a place, just off the road. You can get there by bike. Go through the hedge into the shade And you will see them. The dark pink haze of campions The scent of new bluebells You will feel calm, you will feel peace Reaching deep into your soul. The air will be cleansing and fresh. It has to be the month of May. All of your fears will dissipate And you will be just there. Standing, living in the moment. And being a part of nature Just right for a gloomy November day. As the Newsletter does not have room for longer pieces, please look on the Notice Board for Tom Piercy’s I know a place, so evocative for this Remembrance time of year.
