Keppelite I December 2009

What a year!

2009 had the world on a roller coaster. The suddendrop from the giddy heights of previous ‘fat’ yearsand the numerous twists and turns which followedhad us reeling. Fortunately, the second half of theyear saw some reprieve when positive effects ofthe various government stimulus packages kickedin.

At Keppel, 2009 was a year where we furtherconsolidated our resources, streamlined operationsand sharpened our competitiveness. Thesedetermined steps have enabled the Group to ridethe challenges of the economic downturn, as wellas reassure our stakeholders that we will emergestronger from the crisis.

Our CEO, Mr Choo Chiau Beng, had preparedKeppelites right at the onslaught by rallying ustogether to keep Keppel fighting fit.

A significant milestone in the year was thearticulation of the Keppel Group Vision, Missionand Core Values. This was timely as it provided acommon goal and common language forKeppelites as we drive ahead for strong resultsdespite.

In such times, it is easy for companies to becomedistracted by difficulties at hand and neglect thehuman element in the business. Not for Keppel.Fortifying human capital was a key focus in 2009.

To ensure the continued attraction and retentionof talent, people development initiatives gained

new momentum with the setting up of KeppelCollege. At the operational level, skills upgradingprogressed unabated to enhance the productivityand efficiency of each and every worker. Sharingof expertise and strengthening of skillsets were alsoevident across the Group.

Safety too remained high on the Group agenda. The call for ownership with the slogan, “SafetyStarts With Me. Together We Care”, encapsulatesKeppel’s commitment to the safety journey.

On the business front, we stayed focused onexecuting all our existing projects well, whileworking hard to leverage core competencies fornew opportunities. The Group’s balance sheet wasfurther strengthened with the sale of our stake inSingapore Petroleum Company and the rightsissues of Keppel Land and K-REIT Asia. Evergro wasprivatised to benefit Keppel Land with a largercombined regional portfolio. We became the onlyprivate operator of waste-to-energy plants inSingapore with our two waste-to-energy plants. The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City, in whichKeppel leads the Singapore consortium, is alsomaking significant strides forward.

In good times or bad times, we remain firm onour fundamentals with an eye on the future. Thishas enabled Keppel to emerge wiser and stronger. We welcome 2010.

West Vencedor is built toKeppel’s proven KFELSSSDTTM 3600E design whichwas conferred the ASEANOutstanding EngineeringAchievement Award inDecember 2009 for itseco-friendly features andsustainable operations.

Using the latest engineeringmethods and technology, theKFELS SSDTTM designdeveloped by Keppel’sDeepwater TechnologyGroup (DTG), contributessignificantly to environmentalprotection, as well as thesafety of operators involvedin offshore platformdevelopment drilling.

Mr Aziz Merchant, GM

(Group Design & Engineering)of Keppel O&M and Headof DTG, said, “The KFELSSSDTTM design hasrevolutionised drilling tenderoperations, because now wecan use it against a floatingplatform in deep waters upto 2,000 metres.”

In the past, conventionaldrilling tenders could only bedeployed next to fixedplatforms in shallow waters.Keppel FELS achieved abreakthrough with theKFELS SSDTTM, which becamethe world’s first drillingtender to operate in deepwaters.

Before this design wasintroduced, it was virtually

impossible for two floatingunits to operate side by sidein deep sea. The turbulencecaused by strong waves andthe floating units wouldsurely lead to collisions. TheKFELS SSDT’sTM ability tosynchronise random motionbetween the ocean wavesand the floating platform towhich it is attached, makesthis design truly award-winning.

The first of KFELS SSDTTM rig,West Pelaut was designedand built by Keppel FELS in1994. It was conferred thehighly coveted Shell PlatformRig of the year award in2004, 2006 and 2008,attesting to Keppel FELS’sproven track record.

The KFELS SSDTTM project team gained recognition with the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award 2009 win

In recent years, thisversatile design hasdemonstrated its suitabilityto operate in even morechallenging offshoreenvironments, includingthe deepwater ‘GoldenTriangle’ region made upof Brazil, West Africa andthe Gulf of Mexico(GoM).

However, the developmentprocess has not halted onthis winning rig design.DTG is exploring ways toimprove the KFELSSSDT’sTM ability to handlehurricane season in theGoM, as well as increasingthe rig’s deck load to 5,000tonnes from the current3,600.

Which sector ofrenewable energy wouldbe most relevant toKeppel? We are moving in some waysinto renewable energy. Themost relevant would be usingour offshore knowledge forthe offshore wind business.

We are looking at possibilitiesas our offshore technologyand expertise can betransferred selectively andinnovatively to offshore windfarm installation.

Where do you see is theprimary growth area? There is need for more windfarms to be installatedoffshore in deeper waters. Our technologies can beapplied there.

Take for instance, inAustralia, our subsidiary,Keppel Prince Engineeringin Portland, Victoria, hasbeen the country’s largestproducer of wind towers forwind farms since 2001 and

Fuelling a sustainable futureIn a recent interview with international oil & gas newspaper, Upstream, Mr ChooChiau Beng, CEO of Keppel Corporation shared insights on how the Group’sbusinesses are ready to play an even greater role in sustainable energy development, while maximising business potential and competitiveness in its core segments.

has been rapidly expandingour renewable energysolutions into wave, solarand hydro energy.

Keppel Prince Engineering isstriving to be the leader inAustralia for the fabricationof renewable energycomponents.

ON DEEPWATERPOTENTIAL

How does thedevelopment ofrenewable energysources impact Keppel, with your primarystrength in the oil andgas segment?Currently, renewable energyis not likely to overtake fossilfuels in the foreseeablefuture. There will still beopportunities for theoffshore and marinebusiness, because of thelong-term, demand strengthof energy in oil and gas.

However, oil and gas areresources that will deplete. We will always need to lookfor new sources and todevelop new fields.

Where do you think isthe market?Deepwater production inBrazil, Mexico, West Africaand possibly Australia.Anywhere that is deep water.

We see that the new areasto find oil and gas would bevia wells under water. InBrazil, that is called pre-salt.In the US, it is called lowertertiary. And also there aremore requirements in theareas that are less explored, like the Arctic and ice-boundareas.

ON RESOURCENATIONALISATION

On the issue of resourcenationalisation in oil andgas, do you expect thatKeppel will furtherexpand its yardelsewhere? We are working more withnational oil companiesnowadays. Our strategy ofbeing ‘Near market, Nearcustomer’, is bolstered by20 yards and offices aroundthe world which enable usto work within and in linewith national ambitions, andto have more local content.

Where there is oil and gas tobe found and where thereare rules on nationalisation,we may have to set up a yardthere.

What are Keppel’s plansfor Brazil? Our Brazilian yard will be verybusy in the next few years. We are there; we will capturesome work; and where it

makes commercial sense forKeppel as a company and forour shareholders.

Keppel is the highestbidder for the eightFPSO hulls. Why?One of the requirements isthat you must assemble thehulls in one of the Petrobrasyards in the south. To startup a green-field yard isexpensive, and time-consuming and management-intensive. And it takes manyyears for a new yard to makemoney.

ON KEEPINGCOMPETITIVE

What do you need tostay ahead in themarket? You need to have adiversified portfolio, like us atKeppel. We do not just offerone product. We can buildjackups, semisubmersibles,semi-drilling tenders, production units, and alsoundertake FPSO conversionsand ship repair work. We arealso in different markets. Weoperate a property businessand we also build water andwaste-to-energy plants.

Because we are a diversifiedcompany, we are able to rideout the different cycles ineach of these differentproduct markets. This

diversification allows us toeven out the volatility in themarketplace.

Of course, we are notperfectly diversified, but weare diversified enough, thatwe feel we can ride out thecycles. You must haveenough cash to ride out thestorm. The key in business isto survive the crash andmake money in the upturn.

How do you competewith yards that offer lowcost? We must be more efficient incomputing our cost, givingbetter value for money, forthe owner to want to give usthe business. That is thenature of all businesses. Allcompanies compete basedon the value proposition forthe price they ask.

We have to be very consciousof our cost, and make surewe do not spend one centmore than we need toand be competitive. Ourcompetition is global – wecompete with everybody inthe world. keppelite

A WINNINGPROPOSITIONAs one research analyst putsit, there is a ‘clear buzz’surrounding the Brazilianoffshore industry, mainly dueto the aggressive explorationand production programmewhich Petrobras hasannounced in recent years. This programme calls for atotal of 40 new drilling rigsto be built. The first 12 rigshave been ordered in 2008.

In September 2009,Petrobras issued the tender

for the remaining 28 rigs, with delivery between 2013and 2018 and local contentrequirements. As a result, there is increasing investorinterest in Keppel O&M’swholly-owned yard in Brazil.

Fuelled by this interest, agroup of nine fund managersand analysts visited KeppelFELS Brasil on 7 December2009 to gain a first-handunderstanding of theoperational capability of theBrasFELS yard. Mr Kwok KaiChoong, President and CEO,and Mr Tommy Sam, CFO ofKeppel FELS Brasil gave ageneral overview and tour ofthe yard.

K e p p e l O & M ’s C E O ,Mr Tong said that with an

established yard in Brazil, thecompany expects to get afair share of the Petrobrasorders.

“Our BrasFELS yard is todaythe most comprehensiveoffshore and marine facilityin Latin America, and hasbeen able to help to meetBrazil’s requirements forgreater local content,” headded.

Mr Conrad Werner, theMorgan Stanley researchanalyst who was part of thegroup, commented in hisreport following the visit,“Keppel is well-placed. Wereceived positive feedbackfrom (Brazilian drilling)contractors on Keppel’sBrasFELS yard.

“ T h e m a n a g e m e n t ’spresentation highlighted thekey lessons it has learnt overthe years in building variousproduction vessels forPetrobras. There will be asteep learning curve for anynew player in the market.”
