KENT HAPPENINGS

Volume 35, Issue 12

November 2019

Pastor’s Thoughts About those volunteer hours I asked you to keep track of. I was reminded of something Pastor Keith told the Call Committee when he met with us in August. He pointed out that pastors who are looking for a call want to see how mission-oriented a prospective congregation is. I would hope that our posting our volunteer hours would say something very positive about Kent and our commitment to our sense of mission in our communities. So please write them down and turn them in to church office. ******************************************************************************************* Advent. We begin another journey into the season of Advent. A season of the church year that’s color is blue to remind us that this is a season of hope. It really is a time for us to remember and give thanks for the coming of the Christ child and to help us prepare for the return of the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. So we prepare for Christ’s coming with special sermons and Wednesday evening services and open our hearts to God’s Grace and presence. This Advent I want to push myself to think in a new way about the meaning of Advent’s preparation. This year I want to look at Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. The media reports it is more fre-quently read and watched than any other Christmas story save St. Luke’s account. I am hoping that it might help us during Advent to focus on why that is so. I have several written copies of Dickens’ work and about 8 DVD’s including a 1938 rendition and a 3D animated one, that I faithfully read and watch each Advent. So this year I want to present Sunday’s Advent sermons utilizing Charles Dick-en’s A Christmas Carol for an illustration to our scripture and maybe why people are drawn to it and hear the conversion experienced there for our sake. As you probably remember it is a story about a gruff, miserly character named Ebenezer Scrooge. We also recall that there is a little crippled boy in the story named Tiny Tim Cratchit who (the oppo-site of Scrooge) is most always happy and who is always saying, “God bless us, everyone.” Now as we look closer, we see that this is a story about conversion.., and oh my, did Scrooge ever need converting! I mean he was as despicable a character as one can imagine. He was a selfish, arrogant, greedy, hard-hearted, mean-spirited, uncaring, unsympathetic, unchristian tightwad. His now famous response to Christmas was, “Bah! Humbug!” the sad symbol of such disillusioned spirit, which for me has about the same impact of the politically correct “Happy Holidays” least the mean-ing of Christ mass for our sake disturbs people who may need such grace. My hope is that I can provide meaningful sermons that help us all grow into the true meaning of Advent’s call of repent-ance and preparation of the birth of the “Christ Child. So each Sunday I will look at one of the five Staves (Chapters) and the characters found there and provide a scriptural account of a Biblical character Scrooge resembles and of God’s saving Grace. In the Advent prayers we ask: “Stir up your power, O Christ…” and I add: “help us Lord to walk in the light of Advent so our spirits may grow in wisdom and faithfulness and your salvation, O Lord.”

—Pastor Gauck

December 4, 11 & 18

Arise and Shine Each Wednesday evening this Advent series we welcome the Christ Child, who is the light of the world, aris-ing in our lives this season. In celebration, we, in turn, shine with the light of Christ in various ways for all the world to see the brightness of his love. Each week will focus on a different aspect of the light of Christ and how we are enlightened by him throughout our lives.

“Arise, shine, for your light has come” (Isaiah 60:1)

Following worship each Wednesday, we will share a potluck meal and fellowship. Everyone is invited to bring a dish or dessert to share. The listed committees will host each meal (set up and clean up): December 4 Rising Light (Isaiah 60:1) Living in the light of Jesus, we prepare to celebrate his birth. Repenting of our sins, we put away the works of darkness and dress in the armor of light.

Evangelism, Worship & Music, Finance December 11 Reflected Light (Zecahariah 9:16) During Advent we remember the birth of Jesus, the Light of the world. We reflect his light in our daily lives. Altar Guild, Long Range Planning, Audit December 18

VOLUNTEER SERVICE HOURS

When we think of stewardship three words may come to mind – Time, Treasures and Talents. This is an opportunity for us to recognize the gifts of time we contribute to God’s ministry through volun-teering. For the next year members are being asked to log volunteer hours given to service to this ministry. This includes many things, such as assisting in worship or the fellowship hour, serving on a committee, serving as volunteers in community ministries, helping at Hurricane Deck School, calling members who are home bound, caring for the physical needs of the property, making food or baking cookies for the blood drive or a WELCA bake sale, etc.

Members are being asked to take a current monthly volunteer sheet, found in the gathering space and fill it out, return it at the end of each month and take a new sheet for the coming month. No names are needed, no lists of specific service required. Only the hours spent. Totals will be accumulated and reported from time to time and shared at the next annual meeting.

We don’t do ministry alone. As Church Together those individual gifts of time add up and enable us to “Share Jesus With All.”

If there are questions, please contact Pastor Gauck or Melba Bangert.

Old Business: Our Lutheran World Relief kits were delivered to Columbia by Eldeen Hanke on October 11th.

The Thankoffering envelopes collected in November go to the churchwide WELCA in Chicago. Our Christmas Sock offering in December goes to ELCA Good Gifts. Mary Evans and Karen Ringsdorf will choose the pro-jects to which we will designate our donations.

Kathy Fair has again made over 36 pieces of doll clothes, with some on display, for the Hurricane Deck Christmas store. 14” dolls are need for the clothing.

New Business: A motion was made by Melba Bangert, seconded by Sharon Ballard, that we give $250 to the Hurricane Deck Christmas Store. Motion carried. Diane Reams made a motion, seconded by Karen Pragman, to give $150 to South School for their clothing closet. Motion carried.

Announcements: Melba Bangert reminded us of Kent’s annual meeting on November 10th. A potluck brunch will precede the meeting.

Eldeen Hanke mentioned the Veteran’s Day program on November 11th at the Laurie Care Center. A quartet from Kent will be singing.

21 ladies formed our circle of friendship and we closed with The Lord’s Prayer.

Respectfully submitted, Karen Ringsdorf, Secretary

BRING IN THOSE

BOX TOPS, UPC CODES & LABELS

Don’t care what brand you buy? Then look for the “Box Tops” symbol!

By redeeming the Box Tops & Soup Labels for Education, we help our partner schools, Hurricane Deck Elementary & South Elementary, to purchase things like library books and playground/sports equipment.

This month you donated 9 box tops!

WELCA also collects Best Choice UPC codes & pop top rings. The labels must show the bar code. For every 1000 labels, WELCA gets $30 for community projects!

And keep bringing in those pop top rings! As of August, 2019, the American Legion Zack Wheat Post has collected 724 pounds of pop tops to support Ronald McDonald House. That’s a LOT of pop top rings!

COMING SOON ~ No more clipping! Just scan your receipt to give the schools the labels.

If you see this label, use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipt. Box Tops are still worth 10¢ each for your school. The app will find participating products purchased at any store and instantly add cash to your school's earnings online.

REMEMBER TO CLIP OR SCAN

& SAVE THOSE POP TOP RINGS!
