Let’s Ride,

Enjoying the fresh air and sunshine is really important during stressful times. Waving at all those other motorcycles on the road makes you feel so much better about life and your hobby! Just to keep us on our toes, here is a great article filled with reminders about safety.

Posted in: Rider Training and Safety | by Liz Jansen | May 11, 2018 May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, so we’ve assembled a range of tips to increase your awareness of what you can do to share the road with other road users safely.

Ride Like a Pro 1. Take a skills refresher course with a professionalorganization. Off-road courses are ideal for teachingroad riders how to deal with the unexpected on theroad—like obstacles or loss of traction. Pro-ridingcourses teach valuable defensive riding skills andincrease your proficiency.2. Ride defensively and confidently, not timidly orfearfully. Anticipate what other road users are going todo and be prepared to react appropriately.3. Practice. Head to a vacant parking lot and practiceslow speed and emergency maneuvers.4. Ride within your skill level. Most of us don’t havethe skills or ability to tap into the full power of ourbike. Proficiency and muscle memory take practice andsaddle time to develop.5. Ride smoothly. You can react a lot more quicklythan any vehicle out there, but that doesn’t mean youhave to turn, cut in and out, and make quick moves thatstartle others.6. Scan your environment. Mirrors don’t tell the wholestory, though, so do a visual scan as well.

Ride Responsibly

7. Ride within the speed limit. If you feel the need forspeed, take it to a track.8. Follow other vehicles at a safe distance. Motorcyclesrequire less stopping distance than other vehicles, butallow enough distance in front of you for the vehiclebehind you to stop, especially if it’s a loaded truck!9. Slow down in inclement weather. You may have theskills to ride safely but consider that you’re sharing theroad with others who may not have the same degree ofproficiency, or attentiveness. You’re also less visible inrain or fog.10. Know and follow the rules of the road. They applyto everyone. Other drivers anticipate that you’re goingto follow the them and make their decisionsaccordingly.11. Move away from poorly secured loads. It’s better tobe in front of them than risk having an object hit you ora mattress land on the road in front of you.12. Ride sober.13. Ride unimpaired. Illness, stress, and medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, can weakenyour ability to operate your motorcycle safely. If you’retaking prescription meds, ask your doctor or pharmacistabout the drug’s effect on you, and the potential effectsof combining it with other meds or alcohol.14. Maintain a clear line of sight. When this ischallenged, such as in traffic, increase your followingdistance.15. Conduct traffic checks by scanning yourenvironment while waiting at an intersection or trafficlight. Proceed only when it’s safe.16. Assume the proper blocking position at a stop, including optional angled position for right turns.17. Ride in the correct tire track. This will changedepending on the circumstances and the number oflanes of traffic, but is never in the middle of the lane.Generally, on a two-lane road, ride in the left tire track.18. Maintain an appropriate gap between you and thevehicle ahead of you when stopped. It gives you roomto maneuver if your environmental scan alerts you todangeer

Reduce Distractions 19. Use intercoms only as needed and keep your chatting to an as-needed basis only.20. Keep audio chatter to a minimum. That includes listening to music, chatting with friends or your passengeron your intercom. There are enough competing inputs without adding to what your brain already has to pro-cess.

Increase your Visibility 21. Make yourself visible with high-visibility reflective gear, especially on your upper body, where it’s morelikely to catch the attention of drivers.22. Apply reflective strips to your bike.23. Use hand signals in addition to turn signals. That movement may be what gets noticed.24. Add accessories to your motorcycle that make you more noticeable, like a high-decibel horn and accessorylights. Just don’t blind oncoming traffic.25. Check blind spots before moving away, when coming to a stop, and before making a lane change. Motor-cycle training programs teach riders to check (blind spot), signal, check, before making a lane change.26. Refrain from riding in another driver’s blind spots.27. Tap your brake light when decelerating. It alerts other drivers to your change in speed.

Dress Like a Pro 28. Wear appropriate gear. Fatigue, heat, and cold impair judgment and your ability to react. Dress for the rideand the weather, and be prepared to adapt to changing situations.29. Wear proper fitting gear, done up properly. It’s better for gear to be snug rather than flapping in the breeze. In the case of a mishap, snug-fitting gear better protects you from abrasion and holds armour in place.

Be a Leader 30. Choose your riding partners wisely. Riding as part of a group—two or more riders—carries its own eti-quette and responsibilities. It’s wisest to accumulate skills before riding with others.31. Don’t give in to peer pressure to ride beyond your skill or comfort level.32. Be courteous to other drivers. When they see you driving responsibly, they’re more likely to do the same.33. Keep your cool. Getting angry and into a confrontation with another driver does nothing to diffuse the situ-ation. In addition, while you’re focused on him, someone else may be getting ready to cut you off.

Keep Your Bike in Top Shape 34. Keep your motorcycle well-maintained. A breakdown while riding can lead to a crash.35. Check brake lights, turn signals, and headlights regularly to make sure they’re all working.36. Check your tires before your ride for sufficient pressure (refer to your owner’s manual, not the markingson the sidewall), adequate tread, and any irregularities or embedded objects.

Still hoping to see you on June 20th for the ARC and TTRC Rider Courses in Pontiac!

District University Coordinators & TEAM GWRRA as University Assistants

Rick & Joy Hebner

DUC Corner (District University Coordinator)

We hope that all of you are doing well. The month of May is not over yet and the University has trained more than 1000 with the class offerings. It has been great to see some of you on the Zoom trainings.

It is a little different sitting through the Zoom sessions than in the classroom. One of the neat things is there are people from across the states and Canada in the training classes (kind of like being in a class at Wing Ding). Another great thing is you get information from all across the countries, learning the things that others do and have done.

If you have not checked the training classes out yet, it is not too late. The June class offerings are out and can be found at GWRRADOT.COM. So please go to the GWRRADOT.COM website and check them out. That is the same place you can register for a class. If there are class that you want to attend, you will want to get registered soon. The class sizes are limited, so don’t wait - we would not you to miss out on the one you want. We hope to see you on a Zoom training soon.

If you have problems, please reach out to us and we will help you out.

We hope you all are doing well. Until next time, remember training is FUN (as well as educational).

Rick & Joy Hebner Senior Michigan District University Coordinators

Gold Wing Road Riders Association

Michigan District

Road Safari 2020 We thank our Former District Directors Bob & Kim Scott for coming up with the idea of the Road Safari back in 2017. We hope with your participation, it will continue for many years to come. We have had greater participation each year and hope this trend continues. The main purpose of the Michigan Road Safari is to promote motorcycling to places you may never otherwise visit right here in Michigan. We want you to have fun with this. If you are unable to make the trip on your bike, make it by car. I’m sure we will all see places that are new to us, or that we haven’t been to in a long time. Grab some friends, have them sign up, then let’s go ride! The registration fee is only $10.00. You’ll get a booklet with the location log that covers the driver and one passenger. The driver and passenger are both eligible for the 2020 Road Safari T-Shirt - Provided they both visit 12 of the 16 locations. If they both visit all 16 locations, they are both entered in a drawing for $100.00 that will take place at next year’s (2021) Wingless Weekend.(Need Not be present to win!) You can ride to the locations in the order of your choice. When you reach a location, write the date and time in your book. And feel free to post a photo or two on the GWRRA Michi-gan Face Book page to help promote the Safari. If you make 12 stops, you can pick up your T-Shirt & Booklet at our winter event Wingless Weekend 2021. If you can’t make it to Wingless Weekend - just send $10.00 with your booklet to cover shipping of shirts and Safari book return. The Michigan Road Safari is open to all Motorcyclists! There are GWRRA chapters planning group rides to these locations. So get connected and join in the FUN! Once you see how much FUN we have, we welcome you to consider GWRRA membership, and we don’t care what you ride! Our motto is “FRIENDS for FUN, SAFETY and KNOWLEDGE! The 2020 Michigan Road Safari runs from now thru October 31 , 2020. Just remember we want you to have FUN and RIDE SAFE! Please tell others about the Safari and how they can get their own 2020 Michigan Road Safari Booklet.
