On Friday 12 th March we held a non uniform day in support of the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity. Miss Craw ford who is running the 2010 London Marathon for them presented assem blies to all year groups raising their awareness of the disease and the benefits of support centres to suffer ers and their families. Helen Rollason was a pioneering female BBC sports presenter and broadcaster who died of cancer aged 43. After her diagno sis she became involved in charity work, raising £5 million for a cancer wing at the North Middlesex Hospital. The Helen Rollason Cancer Charity was founded as a legacy in 1999. It runs four cancer care centres in Es sex, London and Hertfordshire and is dedicated to supporting people whose lives are touched by all types of cancer at all stages. We raised £980 from the day which will help enable them to continue with their

exemplary work and spur Miss Crawford around the 26.2 miles of London streets on April 25 th . All sup port on the day will be greatly appre ciated. If you would like to sponsor Miss Crawford then you can use the following link http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/goretex girls Since Miss Crawford began her final preparations for the Marathon, the work of one of those Essex Cancer Care centres has become even more of a focus for Kemnal as Miss Popkin has been battling cancer for some time and is now unable to join her on the marathon. As we go to press further events to support Miss Popkin and to raise funds for the Helen Rollason charity are planned. These include the sixth form wearing fancy dress for the last day of term and a sponsored bike ride for the summer. Full news and pictures of these events will be published on the website and in the next newsletter. Your continued support to raise funds for these centres would be much appreciated.

In February, yr 13 photography students projected their work in empty shop spaces 298 Orpington High Street. Thanks to Mr Metz (Media) for organising this event. This was a success and certainly appreciated by the local com- munity. Well done to Naomi Geczy, Ben Mansfield, Ian Marshall and Matt Love.

RECYCLING

Year 7 forms are expand ing the recycling scheme across the whole school to improve the school's car bon footprint. 7JAn have been recycling in Humani ties and Art since Christ mas but now all year 7s are to get involved and the whole school is being en couraged to recycle as much as they can. This will be done either during citi zenship time demonstrat ing active citizenship, or during morning registration on a rota system. Teach ers and students across the school are reminded to reduce, reuse, recycle!

A group of Year 12 Biology and Chemistry students aiming to apply for Medi- cine attended a Aim Higher funded Surgical Skills Workshop on Wednesday 9th De- cember. In the course of the day, the students were given an idea of what life was like as a surgeon and had the chance to speak to and quiz medical students. In the workshops, they were shown around the exten- sive collection of pre- served animal and human body parts in the Hunte- rian Museum and were

given an introduction to conducting operations. The students were also given a chance to learn some sutur- ing and knot tying skills in a real test of their hand-eye coordination! Miss W Yan (Science)

agreed on what should be grown, it was then down to Mr Markham, and the Science Technicians to show us how to recognise good soil from bad, and how to plant and propagate seedlings.

Mr Latch, our neighbour from the avenue came in to share his garden- ing expertise. It’s good to know the neighbours are keeping an eye on us! Finally, Miss Morris lead group after group of merry 'Land Boys', in Wel- lington Boots, and wielding spades and gardening forks, to dig neat fur- rows in the otherwise pristine turf of the 'Science Quad'. Mr Metz (Media)

On Wednesday 3rd March, the eagerly antici- pated 'Grow a Dish' started promptly at 9am up in the Library with a fine smelling introduction to the day in the form of Roast Broccoli.

The first group of 80 or so Year Sevens entered and Mr Farndon and Miss Morris launched into an enthusiastic introduction of the day's topic - how to make your own food, from seed to plate.

Separated out into groups, the students dis- cussed and debated what should be grown, and how the plants should be laid out in the soil - the soil in this case being an en- closed area called 'the Quad'.

Once again Kemnal has been accepted onto the Gold Scheme and is able to award six students in recognition of their outstanding effort. Last month we had two winners for the following category ‘Extending learning in the Library Resource Centre’

Matthew Bradford 8GC and Josh Verrico 11ADa both use the LRC regularly. Matthew spends a lot of time developing his ICT skills re searching and producing homework. Josh has read a variety of fiction and nonfiction books extensively since starting Kemnal.

Congratulations to both boys who win £200 and receive a certificate and pin. They will also be invited along to the grand presentation eve ning in Bromley later this year to collect their medallion and meet other borough winners.

Our next category is to award a student who has shown outstanding effort ‘Developing self management skills through the PLTS ex tended project’

Nominations can be made by governors, staff, students and parents via the dedicated email address [email protected] Please state the name and tutor group of the student that you are nominating and explain why they deserve to win the award. The closing date is Monday 19 th April

JACK PETCHEY AWARD

On Wednesday 10th March, Year 10 and their form tutors were treated to the speeches of six excellent speakers as part of Jack Petchey's 'Speak Out' challenge. The Year 10 speakers competing for a place in the Bromley regional final were: Josh Rawlings, Joshua Oyedele, Joseph Kreitem, Conor O'Con nor, Zach Geczy and James Mason. All the speakers did an excellent job of entertaining and inspiring a hall full of their peers and teachers. The speeches were thought

ful and diverse, dealing with a range of social and cultural issues; from the importance of comedy, to the dangers of discrimina tion. All speeches were brilliantly delivered, well structured and reflected the hard work and dedica tion the boys have in vested in preparation for the competition. Con gratulations go to Joshua Oyedele, who obtained the most votes from staff and pupils for his speech, 'If Only'. Joshua has been working very hard, gear ing up for his role as Kem nal representative at the

Bromley 'Speak Out' chal lenge which takes place at Cator Park school,Beckenham, on Tuesday 23rd March. Joseph Kreitem will be Joshua's reserve and both boys would no doubt ap preciate as much support as possible. For extra tickets to the event, please come and see me in room 2.1. Well done to all the boys for taking part in the assembly

and best of luck to Josh and Joseph for Tuesday'. Miss De Galleani (English)

The Debate Chamber’s half term law school was a five day intensive course introducing year 12 students interested in a career in law to all as pects of the profession as well as offering sup port and advice for appli cations to university. The course was situated in Central London and al lowed us to see the pro fessional side of the capital. The course itself was very exciting as we were able to meet a wide range of people from

fellow sixth formers to lawyers in the fields of criminal, civil and inter national law. On a practical side the course was crucial in helping us to clarify our future career choices and to investigate uni versity courses. We now know what we need to achieve when applying for university law courses, the level of commitment required at university and in the workplace as well as providing us with some insight to begin to think about what area of the

law we might prefer to work in. The course was not all classroom based, how ever. We had to get ‘suited and booted’ for a trip to study the 400 year history of law at Lincolns Inn and were privileged enough to be able to observe real cases at the Royal Courts of Jus tice. Overall we would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone seriously considering a career in law.

THE WORLD GOING BY

BY BEN SWINDELLS

Birds in the tree,

And a silent breeze, People walk by,

While they look at the sky.

Birds tweet softly and fly away,

And a horse starts to nay, Cars everywhere beeping

their horn,

While a man cuts his lawn.

Birds in their nest,

And a child doing a test, A woman teaching her child

not to be shy,

While a baby starts to cry.

Birds sitting on a roof looking down,

And a young lover frowns,

Baa goes a sheep grazing in a field,

While a man builds.

All the birds sing,

And a prince turns into a king,

While a woman sighs, As the world goes by.

Congratulations to the year 11 students who sat their first unit of AS Critical Thinking in January. There were some excellent results and all are working hard preparing for the second unit in June.

On Thursday 18th March, Year 8 students took part in a literacy day. Students devel oped their literacy skills in all subjects throughout the day. In art, students dis cussed the work of HR Giger and developed their analysing skills. This proved to be a studi ous and tidy art lesson where year 8 students learnt the importance of being able to understand a piece of work. A valu able GCSE skill.

YR 8 LITERACY DAY—JOURNEY TO ANOTHER WORLD Riverside students attend a weekly inclusion

session with students at Kemnal Technology College. Riverside students look forward to this session and show anticipation by asking if we are going to ‘boy’s class’ today and enquiring as to what we will be

cooking/doing? On arrival Riverside

students greet their Kemnal partner with

warmth and are always pleased to see them. Riverside

students usually work with the same partner each week at Kemnal and it is wonderful to see their friendships

grow. Kemnal students are very aware of and show a genuine interest

in the needs of Riverside

students. They ask Riverside staff very sensitive questions about the students; what their disability is called and how it

affects them. However, it is wonderful and refreshing that they then ask about the

students abilities; what they are like and what

they are good at. Riverside I feel that

the inclusion partnership between Riverside and Kemnal is very successful and has a positive impact

Newslet ter Spring 10

On a beautiful spring day the music depart ment took a selected group of year 8 boys to the Royal Festival hall on Tuesday (16 th March) to give them the real life experience of playing the Gamelan. Before the trip, the boys only knew the sounds of In donesian music through headphones on com puter software. Their perceptions of Gamelan music were soon changed when they were faced with a tradi tional Gamelan set as well as a beater and

asked to play as a group for the whole afternoon. They were lead through the cultural traditions of Indonesia as well as original Gamelan music which they learnt by ear. Upon return to school, the boys have brought enthusiasm for the topic as well as knowledge about the Gamelan that was learnt through practice. It was an inspirational experience for the whole group who embraced the spirit of the music as well as the cultural traditions that are closely entwined with it. Miss F. Hill (Music)

YEAR 8 GAMELAN TRIP RO YA L F E S T I V A L H A L L

During the February half term, a rather small, but rather select group of indi viduals made the 21 hour bus trip to the sunny slopes of Bormio! Hopes were high for a good weeks skiing and the conditions were not going to disappoint. With a 3m base of snow there was plenty of skiing to be done. All but one of the boys had been on the trip before, and all were good skiers. This meant they gave their instructor little choice but to push them hard so that by the end of the week their skiing was superb. The upshot of this was the fact that we only managed to see the boys at lunch or when they were on the lifts sitting down. The remainder of the time they were like 9 multicoloured ski jacketed ghosts with 40ft plumes of fine powder in their collective wakes!!! There were only a few

casualties, most of which were to the boys ego’s when they were showing off to the instructors niece who hap pened to ski with them for a few days. Unfortunately this year there weren’t as many evening activities as usual, due to the small nature of our group, but since the boys all skied for the best part of 6 hours a day; they didn’t seem to mind being able to relax in the evenings. The swimming pool did offer some light entertainment one evening. The boys thor oughly enjoying wearing swimming caps which are commonplace rules in most European countries!! All in all they boys had a great time. They swapped face book addresses with pretty much every English speak ing person on resort, and as they are all in year 11, are hopefully going to continue their skiing post Kemnal ski

trips. The college is very keen for the normal 40 or so stu dents to go away next year, so watch this space for more information, or email [email protected] for more information.

Colby McMahon and Laurence Stevens are the first Pupils at Kem nal Technology Col lege to apply for an Arkwright Scholarship. The application proc ess required them to apply for the scholar ship and sit an apti tude paper on the 3 rd of February 2010. The paper asked them to design a new USB for primary school chil dren to ensure they do not leave them in the computer when they

get up. 807 pupils applied for the scholarship and 434 did well enough in the aptitude paper to be called to interview. Colby will be making his way to The Insti tute of Education and Laurence Loughbor ough University, with a view to awarding 240 scholarships to both pupils and schools. The interviews will comprise of a tour of the Design and Tech

nology Facilities at the Universities, a team building task and an interview where they will be asked to pre sent their Technology Coursework. We shall be work with them closely between now and then to ensure that they are fully pre pared for the interview and the work taken with them is of an ex ceptionally high stan dard.

Howdens at Sidcup have delivered the new kitchen for the Food Technology Room which will be refit ted in the summer. The kitchen will undergo an extension providing 2 additional work spaces equipped with ovens, worktops and utensils. The individual kitchens will be themed and zoned to ensure smooth running of each station. We would like to thank them for their generosity and look forward to see ing the finished result in September. Watch out for photos of our new kitchen!

Year 10 food technology had a guest speaker from VIVA which is the Vegetarians International Voice for Animals. This was very informative and useful to the students as it gave an insight to the reasoning behind vegetarianism. The talk also helped to make the students aware that being vegetarian doesn’t mean that you can only eat ’boring’ food by giving a Quorn chilli demonstration as well as some other vegetarian products, which after a lot of uncertainty to begin with the boys tasted and thoroughly enjoyed!!

Following the Deadline for GCSE, AS and A2 pupils in March the Technology De- partment has a wealth of outstanding pieces of practi- cal work to display. Furni- ture has featured highly this year for the Year 13 pupils, with a variety of tables, seat- ing and storage systems having been designed and made. Year 11 have been working on the theme of Toys and Games for their major coursework. They have produced a wide variety of solutions from giant noughts and crosses, chess boards, cars, vans and even a drum kit. A choice selec- tion of these will be on dis- play for staff and pupils to see on their return from the Easter holiday. This should offer an insight into the

GCSE and A Level study and inspiration for pupils who have just started or will shortly be starting these programmes of study. Parents are invited to view the pupils work after school where the library will be kept open until 5:00pm. We look forward to seeing you then.

On 12 February 2010 we held our first ever “Personal Development” Day, in response to feedback from col leagues, indicating that they would benefit from the opportunity to work with others on activities that developed personal skills. We took the opportunity to get everyone together first thing, with the inten tion of energising them and getting them to work as one big, happy team! For this momentous task we employed the consid erable skills of a com pany called Drum Jam Team Beat, who prom ise to bring you the rhythm and spirit of Af rica through music. Smil ing faces filled in main hall, as colleagues grabbed an instrument and started to create music together. Typi cally, Mr Robinson was the first up to lead the dancing! Following the energising

session, everyone then split up to go off to work shops they had booked on, or in some cases, to complete professional research for the remain der of the day. The fol lowing workshops were running: Improve Your Golf, Thai Cookery, Indian Fast Food, Jewellery Making, Climbing, Video Editing, Step Into Dance, Screen printing, Cake Decorat ing and Icing, Woof Turning and last, but by no means least, Rock Choir. All of them, with the ex ception of wood turning, were led by colleagues from Kemnal, who im pressed all of the partici pants with their prepara tion, knowledge, skills and enthusiasm. A spe cial mention must go Mr Howell, Mr Hunter, Mr C Chalaye and all of the participants in the Rock Choir, who recorded their own unique version of California Dreaming,

the CD copy of which was sold to raise money for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal. Following such an enjoy able and varied day, with such positive feedback from participants, I have no doubt that Personal Development days will be come a regular fea ture in the calendar in future. A special thanks must go to all of our col leagues who planned, prepared and ran the workshops: Mr Elias, Miss Fletcher, Mr Keely, Mr Howell, Mr Hunter, Mr C Chalaye, Mrs Morris, Mr Gordan, Mr Farndon, Mr Metz, Ms Morris, Ms Robert, Ms Lambert, Mr Hesel den and Mr Petty, grand dad of Mark Petty in Year 7. cally minded students there is also a new 3D BTEC course which will provide opportunities to make links across technology and art through projects using a range of materials such as plastics wood and metal in exciting design projects. Along with these new opportu nities a greater range of students will be offered access to the more academic subjects such as Geography and History, Languages and Media. For the scientists of the future there will also be the chance to opt for the Ex tended Science course. Good luck to all the students in their choices Any queries should be directed to Juliet Morris—Deputy Headteacher in charge of Curriculum [email protected]

NEW LOOK OPTIONS AT KTC

ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY PARIS TRIP On the 7 th of February, a group of year 13/12 students and I started our trip to Paris. We left Ebbsfleet International extremely early Sunday morning and arrived in Paris around ten o’clock. We looked like typical tourists with cameras hanging around our necks taking photographs of literally everything. Once we’d arranged to pair up with a travel buddy, we went first to the Pompidou Centre, a huge building full of modern and contemporary art. With six floors the top level gives you a mag- nificent view of the city and on a clear day you can see the Eiffel tower. We then visited the Maison Europenne De la Photographie. This was an important museum to me as it was a photography gallery, the main artist in this museum that inspired me was Phillipe Bordas, he shoots African themed photographs, with vivid colours, mainly orange and red. We went straight to the restaurant absolutely starving after such a long day and had a steak dinner with a beer and desert in a typical little French bistrot. After breakfast on Monday, we went to the Louvre. The building was vast and magnifi- cently built, the entrance is made of a glass triangle sticking out of the ground with escala- tors that took us down. Mrs Robert managed to chat up the guy on the counter and got us in for free! This museum holds famous artworks such as the Mona Lisa by De Vinci. The paint- ing seemed smaller then I thought it would be, but it took pride of place in the museum. We then walked to Viaduct des Arts which is an old train track made into a long walking path. We walked along this path and took some photo- graphs with of course a few students feeling the need to pose at every occasion. On our last morning we visited the Trocadero and took some photographs of the surround-

ing area on our way to the Eiffel Tower. We were all very excited walk- ing there and we knew we were get- ting closer as the amount of dodgy men selling plastic Eiffel towers gradually increased. Once we arrived, it was snowing and very cold! To our disappointment we were told that the tower was closed be- cause the ice on the upper floors made it too dangerous, that’s health and safety for you. So we decided to visit the Musee D’Or- say. Another one of my favourites; this museum used to be a train station. The building was huge and we only managed to see a couple of Van Gogh and Monet’s paintings. We later walked to a nearby cafe for our lunch which was kindly paid for out of the sixth form common room fund, so that’s were all my 50p’s go! We walked back to the Eiffel tower and this time we were in luck! We were allowed up, but only to the first floor which was disappointing….. But worth it. The lift travelling up reminded me of the lift in “Willy Wonker and the Choco- late Factory”. What an adventure! Once we got back down to firm ground and safety we travelled back to the hotel area and the teachers let the students loose to roam around and explore the area. Once our time was up we met back at the hotel with our bags, packed everything away and sadly left the hotel to catch the Eurostar. Overall the trip proved very enjoyable, re- laxing, and informative all at the same time. I would definitely advise anyone who gets the chance to go to Paris with Ms Robert, Ms Morris and Mr Odell. It was a great opportunity and I wouldn’t have changed anything. Thank you. By Ian Marshall—Year 13

PARENTS VOICE Walk to School Week 17 th – 21 st May 2010

Kemnal will encourage students to walk to school during this week as part of the National Walk to

School Week or, if this is not possible, to get off

the bus one stop early or cycle to school to promote

healthy living and wellbeing.

We would like all our students to feel the benefits of being healthy and feel this is one easy way to achieve a healthy lifestyle. If we can encourage students to walk or cycle more it will benefit them in more ways than one. It has been proven that exercise at the beginning of the day can help to promote learning as well as fitness.

We also encourage students to ‘Walk to School‛ in the month of October, this can be at any time during the month to just to try it out and feel the benefits of walking and exercis Please as parents/ guardians help us to encourage your son/ daughter to participate in these schemes.
