CROSSWORD

DIAMONDS (continued):•Althoughdiamonds are 58 timesharder than

the next hardest mineral on Earth, they are quite brittle and can be shattered by the single blow of a hammer. And if a diamond is placed in an oven at a temperature of 1405° F (763° C), it will disappear without leaving so much as an ash behind.

• About 250 tons of earth must be mined toproduce a single one-carat diamond. Over 130,000,000 carats weighing 57,000 lbs. (26,000 kg) of diamonds are mined every year – a value of about $9 billion.

•OfallthediamondstobefoundonEarth,only20% of them are suitable for jewelry. The majority of diamonds are used for industrial drilling, grinding, cutting, and polishing tools. Diamonds are embedded into drill bits for drilling oil and gas wells through thousands of feet of rock.

•DiamondswerefirstdiscoveredinIndia, butmost diamond deposits are found in Africa and Russia.TherearesignificantdepositsinBrazil,Australia, and Canada, and in a few U.S. states, Arkansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. There’s only one mine in the world where you can be a miner, located at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, a 37.5-acre ancient volcanic crater. For $7, you can mine all day andkeepanythingyoufind.In1990,oneluckypark visitor found a diamond weighing 3.03 carats in the rough. After cutting, the gem was

a perfect 1.09 carat. Don’t get your hopes up, however – gemologists estimate this was a one in a billion occurrence.

•Althoughlessthan1%ofdiamondsareminedin the U.S., America buys more than half of the world’s total production of quality gems.

•A diamond’s value is based on the “FourC’s” – carat weight, clarity, color, and cut. A diamond’s carat is not the same as that of gold. Pure gold is considered 24 carats, while onediamondcaratis0.007055oz.(200mg).Not all diamonds are clear. The presence of impurities causes the gems to vary in color, as can heat or irradiation. Nitrogen in a stone produces a yellow color, while irradiation mightproducegreen.Blue, red, brown, pink, orange, and even black might result from the presence of both irradiation and heat. Clear diamonds are the highest grade and value.

• Diamonds lose about 50% of their originalweight during the cutting and polishing process, changing a rough stone into a faceted gem. One diamond weighing two carats is worth double that of two one-carat diamonds. About 75% of all diamonds sold worldwide are round cut. Other popular cuts include the football-shaped marquise, the pear cut (which are rounded on one end with a tapering point on the other), and the emerald cut, a rectangular shape with cropped corners.

•Althoughblue, green, andpinkdiamondsareextremely rare, they are not the rarest gems. That honor belongs to the pure red ruby. Diamonds themselves aren’t actually rare at all, with thousands mined every year.

• The world’s largest diamond was found inSouth Africa in 1905. Dubbed the Cullinan, it

LIBRARIESHappy Library Week! Since 1958, we’ve observed this tribute established by the North American Library Association. Here are some “book bits” for readers to chew on during this commemorative week. • The word “library” has its origins in the Latin,

the word liber meaning “book.” Humans have long recognized the need for an organized archive of history. The earliest libraries dating back to 2600 BC included papyrus scrolls and clay tablets written in cuneiform script. There was even a library classification system as early as 700 BC.

• As French settlers made their way to North America in the 1500s, they brought their personal book collections with them. The first non-personal library was established in Quebec City in 1635 at the Jesuit College. Three years later, clergyman John Harvard bequeathed his 400-volume library and half of his estate to the College at New Towne. The college was renamed Harvard College in his honor, and the library’s meager beginnings have grown into the largest academic library and third largest library overall in the United States, with close to 17 million volumes.

• In the 17th and 18th centuries, as the quantity of books increased with the advent of printing, there was a considerable increase in the interest of libraries. In 1731, Benjamin Franklin introduced the idea of a “subscription library,” one that shared books among members of a literary society. People could join by purchasing “stock” in the organization, and books were lent only to members.

• The Bodleian Library, the main research center for the University of Oxford, was established in 1602. By 1914, the total number of books in its collections had already passed the one million mark.

This week’s question: Who was the world heavyweight champion who retired from boxing undefeated in 1956?

DIAMONDS (continued):weighed 3106.75 carats uncut, three times the sizeofthenextlargestdiamond, theExcelsior, also found in South Africa. Today they are all part of the Britishcrown jewels.

•ThelegendaryHopeDiamondisa45.52-caratdeep blue stone famous for a supposed curse upon its owners. Its blue color is attributed to trace amounts of boron and nitrogen within its composition. When exposed to ultraviolet light, it produces a red phosphorescence, a “glow-in-the-dark” effect. The curse alleges that the gem brings tragedy to all who own it or wear it, but it’s likely that the stories were fabricated to heighten the diamond’s mystery and consequently, its value. However, legendhas it that two owners committed suicide, another was killed by Russian revolutionists, one murdered by her sweetheart, and another thrown from a precipice. At one point, the gem was in the possession of Marie Antoinette and her husband King Louis XVI, who were guillotined. It’sbelievedthattheHopeDiamondcame from a mine in India, and was brought to Paris by a French gem merchant. It currently resides in the Smithsonian Institute, donated by diamondmerchantHarryWinstonin1958.Theirreplaceable gem is reportedly insured for $250 million. It’s displayed behind a 3-inch-thick (76 mm) bulletproof glass in its own display room.

Established in 1800, the Library of Congress is the nation’s largest library. Originally housed in the Capitol building, its 30,000 volumes were completely destroyed in August, 1814 when British troops set fire to the Capitol during the War of 1812. offered his personal library of 6,487 books (which he had spent 50 years collecting) for sale as a replacement, and Congress appropriated $23,950 for the purchase.

• Educator and Columbia University librarian Melvil Dewey copyrighted his decimal classification system for books in 1876, a system still used by most libraries. Each category, for example “Philosophy and Psychology,” is assigned a number, which is then divided into subcategories in increments of 10.

• Steel magnate Andrew Carnegie gave millions of dollars to fund more than 2,500 libraries in 47. U.S. states, 7 Canadian provinces, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and the West Indies. Carnegie required that the local communities provide the land and a budget for operation. At the time of his death, Carnegie had already donated $351 million of his fortune – that’s $4.8 billion in today’s money.

Q: Our 10-year-old Shih Tzu recently started snoring, and now it’s getting worse. She snores just about every time she sleeps. If I we wake her when she begins snoring, she just starts up again. Is there something wrong? We’re not getting any sleep!

A: If you haven’t already done so, see your veterinarian to rule out an obstruction in the dog’s throat, such as a growth, or even a toy. “Maybe the problem has worsened as your dog has gained weight,” says Dr. Mark Russak, of Berlin, CT, president-elect of the American Animal Hospital Association. “Just as weight gain may be associated with snoring in people, the same is true for dogs. Snoring is also more common in dogs, such as Pugs, with short snouts.” “If your dog is overweight, the snoring will likely decline as your dog takes off the pounds. Your veterinarian can advise you on a weight-loss strategy,” says Russak. “Otherwise, consider moving your dog out of the bedroom so you can sleep. But I understand that is not likely advice you’ll consider. After all, my wife would more likely move me out of the bedroom before she moves the dog. Have you tried ear plugs?”

“DJANGO UNCHAINED’’: No stranger to generating controversy with his work, Quentin Tarantino did it again - and earned an Oscar for his script, with another going to Christoph Waltz, who also had won best supporting actor for Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds’’ - for his revisionist, often violent adventure set in the pre-Civil War era. Jamie Foxx plays Django, a freed slave whose quest to rescue his wife (Kerry Washington, “Scandal’’) from a sinister plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio) prompts him to team with a dentist-turned-bounty hunter (Waltz). Samuel L. Jackson and Walton Goggins (“Justified’’) also star. ***

“A MONSTER IN PARIS’’: With a highly descriptive name, this animated fantasy offers marvelous visuals - especially with its backdrop of the City of Light in the early 1900s - and a fun plot. A clumsy trio wreaks havoc in a laboratory, resulting in the title creation. The monster isn’t necessarily fearsome, as demonstrated by his knack for music, but an ambitious police chief still targets him. Vanessa Paradis and Sean Lennon provide speaking and singing vocals, with Catherine O’Hara, Bob Balaban, Adam Goldberg and Danny Huston also in the voice cast. ***

“THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT 2: GHOSTS OF GEORGIA’’: Lest there be confusion from the title, Georgia is the state where this very familiar sequel to the earlier horror film unfolds. Chad Michael Murray (“One Tree Hill’’) and Abigail Spencer (“Oz the Great and Powerful’’) play a couple who relocate with their young daughter (Emily Alyn Lind), only to find their

new residence plagued by spooky and ultimately threatening doings. Katee Sackoff (“Longmire,’’ “Battlestar Galactica’’) and veteran actress Cicely Tyson also star. DVD extras: theatrical trailers; “making-of ’’ documentary; audio commentary by director Tom Elkins, writer David Coggeshall and co-producer Brad Kessell; deleted scenes; outtakes. **

“WINGS OF LIFE’’: Part of the Disney nature documentary series (“Chimpanzee,’’ “Oceans,’’ etc.), this examination of the daily world around us focuses on its relationship to such creatures as bees and butterflies, which pollinate nature. Meryl Streep narrates the film, as various forms of cinematography are used to illustrate a series of environmental cases of cause and effect. ***

“NOVA: BUILDING PHARAOH’S CHARIOT’’: Given that title, and the fact that this is an episode of the PBS science series, it should come as little surprise that the reconstructing of the vehicles used by ancient leaders and warriors - see “Ben-Hur’’ - is the essence of the program. What’s especially fascinating is the number of supposedly modern features the original chariots incorporated, including anti-roll bars and shock absorbers. Archaeologists and engineers are among those who work on the project. ***

“IRON MAN: RISE OF TECHNOVORE’’: With Robert Downey Jr.’s third movie (or fourth, if you count “Marvel’s the Avengers’’) about the superhero nearing release, this animated adventure also puts Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) through fresh paces. Maligned as the supposed reason a terrorist attack succeeded, he goes rogue - with some help from the Punisher (voice of Norman Reedus, “The Walking Dead’’) - to stop a villain who’s created a biotech weapon. Matthew Mercer supplies the voice of Iron Man. DVD extras: two “making-of ’’ documentaries. ***

Saving MoneyHere’s a few simple ideas for saving money while shopping – both online and regular “at the store” shopping. First, for online shopping… If you’re not in a rush to buy something go to an online store, create an account and “window” shop. Place the items you’d like to buy in your online shopping cart. Once you’re finished, simply close the website and wait for a week or two. Most of the time, the online retailer will email you a coupon for 20% off, or free shipping, or some other incentive to encourage you to come back to their site and finish checking out. It’s pretty neat. Another trick is to use the Google search engine to search for coupons and discount codes, either for your online order OR for shopping at you favorite stores right here in the Okanagan. Often you can find a coupon allowing you to save substantially on your purchase. Shopping at brick & mortar stores… most stores honor competitor’s coupons and some will even beat the competitor’s coupon by 10% or 15%. Also, when shopping for items online, you’ll notice that many products are cheaper in the USA than they are in Canada. Obviously, this is peculiar given that our exchange rate is almost at par. Sometimes you can save huge amounts, especially on automotive/RV parts, some

electronics, jewelry, etc… The trouble is –a lot of these companies won’t ship to Canada. So why not consider using a US address for such purchases? One company that does this is Ship Happens in Oroville, WA, just across the border from Osoyoos. If you travel to the lower mainland a lot, than Letterlock in Sumas, WA offers the same service. You simply have the item shipped there, and then you driver across the border and pick it up. There is a modest $5 (+/-) fee, and as long as your purchase is less than $400 you don’t have to pay duty. It has the potential to save you

a nice chunk of change. Saving money is not always the most important

thing. You’ll need to decide for yourself the ethics behind

your personal buying decisions. How do your shopping practices affect

the local entrepreneurs and business people who are

your friends and neighbors? If saving money is important to you,

hopefully these ideas will help!

Joe was a steward for Fly High airlines. He watched as an older lady boarded the plane holding a dog in a cage. “Excuse me,” said Joe “Dogs are not allowed on board, you have to check it in with the baggage.” The lady wasn’t happy, but Joe was an experienced steward and succeeded in convincing the lady without much of a scene. Upon arrival, Joe took a peek in the cage, and to his great shock, saw that the dog was dead! Frantic that they may get sued, Joe quickly sent one of his underlings to town to buy a dog that looked exactly the same. Just in the nick of time the underling arrived with the replacement dog. They quickly switched dogs and breathed a sigh of relief. “This isn’t my dog!” said the lady as soon as she saw it. “I’m sure it is,” insisted Joe, “I was very careful about where I put it.” “It’s not my dog,” argued the lady. “You see, I was bringing my dog to my home town to have him buried, and this dog is alive!”
