Jan 25 - Feb 1, 2013 Issue #00010 TIDBITS® LOOKS AT CLASSIC CROONERS by Janet Spencer GORDON LIGHTFOOT Gordon Lightfoot was born in Orillia, Ontario in 1938. He sang on the local radio station starting at the age of five. He made his first appearance at the Old Massey Hall in Toronto at the age of 12, a gig he continued annually until 2009. At the age of 21, his first recorded songs were released on 45s in 1962. Because he was a local boy, radio stations in Toronto and Montreal gave him plenty of air time. In 1964, Marty Robbins took his song Ribbon of Darkness to #1 on the charts, the first of his songs to make it to the top. In 1968, his song Black Day in July about the Detroit riots angered the U.S. Government, who banned it from airplay and tried to ban the sale of the album. President Lyndon Johnson publicly scolded Lightfoot. After reading an article in Newsweek about the sinking of the ore ship SS Edmund Fitzgerald, he wrote a song to commemorate the disaster. Most of the lyrics in the song came straight out of the magazine article. Whenever possible, he meets with family members of the men who died. In 2002, just before playing in his hometown, he suffered a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm and barely survived. By 2005 he was back on the road again. Turn page for more

◆ If you like taking baths, you can invest in a second rubber bath mat to drape over the side of the tub. The edge will be nonslip, so you can hold on for support, and your hands will not slide.

◆ Sunburn happens in the winter, too, especially on the slopes. Use a cotton ball soaked in cold tea to ease tight, dry skin. Be sure to apply sunscreen to your face and wear eye protection when going out in the snow.

◆ For drains slowed by grease, sprinkle a half-cup each of salt and baking soda down the drain, and follow it with an entire kettle or pot of boiling water.

◆ If the smell in your cedar chest has faded, bring it back easily with extra-fine sandpaper. A very light sanding is all it takes in most cases.

◆ For delicious baked potatoes, boil a pot of salted water, add whole potatoes with skin, remove from heat and let stand for 15 minutes. Finish in oven for a sturdier skin. Start checking for doneness after 15 minutes in the oven. Baking time can be cut in half! -- J.L. in Florida

Q: I heard that Luke Perry and Jennie Garth are planning to do a project together soon. Is that true? -- Dahlia A., via e-mailA: When I spoke with Luke recently, he was mum on the subject of Jennie, but he WAS eager to tell me about his latest Hallmark Movie Channel movie: “Goodnight for Justice: Queen of Hearts,” which premieres Saturday, Jan. 26, and re-airs throughout the week. (Check local listings.)On his love for his “Goodnight” series,

and Westerns in general, Luke told me: “I don’t need any aliens with my cowboys. I’ll just take my cowboys straight up if that’s OK with everybody else. We all talk about Westerns. There were some great ones made.“What I love about (the “Goodnight”) movies is that you know what you’re going to get going in, which makes it like the old Western serials that would play before the movies. There’s a bit of a cliffhanger element, and the guy rides off in the end. But if he comes back the next time, you know there’ll be some more shooting and some girls and some action, and another little bit of the story will get told. That’s what I wanna do. I’ve never felt really compelled to do the bigger, better, more bang, more stuff. You can still make a good Western.”

***Q: Has “Body of Proof ” been renewed

for another season? -- George T., via e-mailA: The Dana Delany-starring medical drama will return to ABC for its third season on Feb. 5 at 10/9c with a two-part season premiere (with the conclusion airing the following Tuesday). This season, Dr. Megan Hunt tackles the biggest case of her career, and her biggest personal mystery life: Did her father really commit suicide, or was he murdered?

***Q: I love this season of “The Biggest Loser,” but I wondered if they are nervous about including kids this time around? -- Harriet W., Owings Mills, Md.A: I spoke with host Alison Sweeney and asked her just that. Being a mom herself, she told me that the show plans to help these kids in the best way possible, and

won’t make them submit to the grueling programs that the adults go through.“The first thing we did was to take into consideration the age of the contestants, and how we could best help and guide them,” she said. “They don’t live on the ranch; they are not going to be competing. We encourage the families to also change their nutrition choices, and get them out there and exercising. This is all done in a kid-friendly way.”

***Q: Can you tell me when Charlie Sheen’s “Anger Management” returns for a new season? -- John R., via e-mailA: The FX comedy -- whose series premiere was the most watched cable-sitcom premiere in history -- returned on Jan. 17. The network has ordered 90 new episodes, which will be produced over the next two years.

sILLY PUTTYDuring World War II, Japanese invasions of rubber-producing countries in the Far East vastly reduced availability of rubber in the U.S. In the 1940s, the U.S. War Production Board asked General Electric for help in developing a cheap substitute for rubber so that production of things such as boots and tires could continue. G.E. hired James Wright, who created a compound after accidentally dropping some boric acid into silicone oil in 1943. • It stretched further than rubber; rebounded higher than rubber; was impervious to mold and decay; and could withstand all temperatures. The only problem was that scientists could find no real use for the stuff. In 1945, G.E. mailed samples to scientists all over the world, asking them to find a purpose for it. • Paul Hodgson happened to attend a party where some of the stuff was brought out. It entertained the party-goers for hours. He teamed up with the owner of a toy store and Silly Putty outsold everything else in the company catalog with the exception of a 50 cent box of crayons. Still, the store owner wasn’t interested in pursuing Silly Putty, so Hodgson split off on his own. In 1950 Hodgson bought a huge glob of the stuff for $147 and hired a Yale student to separate it into one ounce balls and put it into plastic eggs, perhaps because Easter was coming up. Several months later when Silly Putty was mentioned in the “Talk of the Town” section of the New Yorker magazine, Hodgson’s phone rang off the hook and he collected a quarter million orders in only four days. A few years later, he was racking up sales of over six million dollars annually. Hodgson was soon a millionaire. • Today, Binney & Smith, owners of Crayola, own the rights to Silly Putty. It comes in 16 different colors including glow-in-the-dark, glitter, metallic gold, and hot flourescent colors. There’s also Silly Putty that changes color depending on the temperature of your hands. You can even buy a five-pound block of Silly Putty for only $79.

◆ It was Martin Luther King Jr. who made the following sage observation: “Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will.”

◆ Are you a dromomaniac? If you travel compulsively, you are.

◆ The famed statue Venus de Milo was lost to history for nearly 2,000 years. No one knew of its existence until 1820, when a Greek peasant tilling a field on the island of Milos hit stone -- several carved blocks of stone, to be specific. Within a few weeks, archaeologists arrived and took the statue of Aphrodite to France. King Louis XVIII dubbed it the Venus de Milo and donated it to the Louvre, where it remains today.

◆ You might be surprised to learn that Humphrey Bogart wasn’t the producers’ first choice for the role of Rick in “Casablanca.” An actor named George Raft was originally offered the part, but he turned it down because he didn’t like the script.

◆ In 2010, a new species of slug was discovered in the mountains of Borneo. It is distinguished from other species of slug by its novel method of mating: It shoots its mate with a so-called love dart made of calcium carbonate and containing hormones. The researchers nicknamed the gastropods “ninja slugs.”

◆ If you’re traveling to Kansas anytime soon, be sure to remember that it is against the law in that state to catch fish with your bare hands.

◆ During the original run of the classic 1960s TV series “Gilligan’s Island,” some viewers took the show rather too seriously. Several telegrams were sent to the U.S. Coast Guard asking why the poor people hadn’t yet been rescued.

Crooners Con’dLEONARD COHEN• Leonard Cohen was born in Westmount near Montreal in 1934. He became a published poet and novelist but found that it didn’t pay very well. At the age of 32, he went into music hoping to earn more money, which he did. When a mutual friend introduced him to Judy Collins, he sang her a song he’d recently written called Suzanne. She loved it, recorded it in 1966, and it became a hit.• He’s been called the poet laureate of pessimism, the godfather of gloom, and the prince of bummers. His songs have been called ‘music to slit your wrists to.’ Anjelica Huston described him as “part wolf and part angel.”• Phil Spector produced his album Death of a Ladies’ Man using his famous “Wall of Sound” technique, which annoyed Cohen, who preferred a minimalist sound. During an argument over the production, Spector allegedly pulled a gun and threatened to shoot Cohen. The album was a commercial disaster, with fans complaining they couldn’t hear Cohen’s voice underneath all the layers.• One of Cohen’s most famous songs is Hallelujah which is about characters in the Bible. It took him five years to complete the song to his satisfaction and he turned out over 80 verses. Many artists have recorded the song and it’s appeared in numerous soundtracks, including the movie Shrek.• When Cohen released a book of poetry and drawings called Book of Longing in 2006, a Toronto retailer offered autographed copies to the first 1,500 people who ordered online. They sold out within hours and the book quickly climbed to bestseller status in Canada. When Cohen made his first public appearance in 13 years at a book event in Toronto, about 3,000 people showed up, a crowd so dense the street in front of the bookstore had to be closed off. Philip Glass later composed music for the book.NEIL YOUNG• Neil Young was born in Toronto in 1945, and grew up in Omemee, Ontario. The local elementary school is named after his father.• He contracted polio in 1951 in one of the last major outbreaks of the disease in Ontario. Coincidentally, Joni Mitchell also contracted the disease during this same outbreak. She was nine years old at the time. • He taught himself to play the ukulele before learning the guitar. While playing folk clubs in

→ On Jan. 31, 1606, in London, Guy Fawkes, a chief conspirator in the plot to blow up the British Parliament building, jumps to his death moments before his execution for treason. He had been found lurking in a cellar of the Parliament building with 2 tons of gunpowder.

→ On Feb. 1, 1884, the first portion of the Oxford English Dictionary is published. In 1857, members of London’s Philological Society decided to produce a dictionary that would cover all vocabulary from 1150 A.D. to the present. It took more than 40 years to complete.

→ On Jan. 28, 1915, the captain of a German cruiser orders the destruction of the William P. Frye, an American merchant ship off the Brazilian coast. He had ordered the Frye to jettison its cargo as contraband, but the ship’s crew refused. It was the first American merchant vessel lost to Germany’s aggression during World War I.

→ On Jan. 29, 1922, in the middle of a film, the Knickerbocker Theatre in Washington, D.C., collapses, killing 108 people and sending another 133 to the hospital. Accumulated snowfall from a blizzard collapsed the theater’s roof, which fell down on top of theatergoers.

→ On Jan. 30, 1933, President Paul von Hindenburg names Adolf Hitler -- fuhrer (leader) of the National Socialist German Workers Party (or Nazi Party) -- as chancellor of Germany. Hitler’s meteoric rise to prominence in Germany was spurred largely by the German people’s frustration with dismal economic conditions.

→ On Feb. 3, 1950, Klaus Fuchs, a German-born British scientist who helped developed the atomic bomb, is arrested in Great Britain for passing top-secret information about the bomb to the Soviet Union. The arrest of Fuchs led authorities to several other individuals, including Julius and Ethel Rosenberg in the U.S.

Crooners Con’dWinnipeg, he met Joni Mitchell. He played a song for her called Sugar Mountain, composed at the age of 19, in which he laments his lost youth. In response, Joni composed the song Circle Game.• In 1966, Young moved to California and started the band Buffalo Springfield, naming the band after a brand of steamroller that was parked on the street at the time. His first album came out in 1968, the first of 35 studio albums released over a 40 year time span.• In 1969, he teamed up with Crosby, Stills, & Nash. Stills complained that Young “wanted to play folk music in a rock band.”• Young launched his solo career in 1970 with a backup band called Crazy Horse. When band member Danny Whitten became addicted to heroin, Young wrote the song The Needle and the Damage Done. Young kicked Whitten out of the band in 1972, and he died of a drug overdose that same night.

enjoy A Warm Bamboo Fusion Massage

Warm bamboo fusion massage combines the techniques of Swedish massage and the benefits of soothing heat with the energy of bamboo. The result is a relaxing, invigorating massage.

Smooth pieces of bamboo, of various shapes and sizes, are heated with an electric pad and then used to literally roll and knead away aches, pains, tension and stress in the muscles, tendons and ligaments. The warmth of the bamboo increases the suppleness of the outer layer of muscle, allowing the bamboo fusion massage to penetrate deeper, more quickly.

As you enjoy a warm bamboo fusion massage you’ll discover that it Accelerates a deep tissue massage, Relieves tightness from muscles and tendons, Helps regenerate muscle tissue, and Relaxes the body and mind.

Pet BitsPotty Training a Cat

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m going to adopt a cat soon, and I’ve never had a pet. My friend told me that cats aren’t easy to train, so I’m worried. Will it be difficult to train my cat to use a litter box? -- Sara in Columbus, Ga.

DEAR SARA: Congratulations on adopting your first pet! Cats can be great companions. While it’s difficult to teach a cat to fetch or roll over like a dog, house training is usually much easier to accomplish.Cats have a natural instinct to cover up their droppings. This hides them from predators. A litter box caters to that instinct.A kitten that is old enough to be adopted (usually 12 weeks) has typically been taught by its mother how and where to poop, how to cover it up, and how to keep itself clean and neat (by washing its fur with its tongue). You can reinforce this: Set up your new cat’s litter box, as well as its bedding, toys, food and water, ahead of time. As soon as you bring your new cat home, take it to the litter box and let the cat check it out.If your cat doesn’t get it the first time, and piddles elsewhere in the house, don’t scold it. Try to catch it as soon it happens, pick the cat up and place it in the litter box. It should connect quickly. What if your cat refuses to use the litter box and goes elsewhere? Move the box to a quieter part of the house. If that doesn’t work, or if the cat appears lethargic or meows a lot, contact the veterinarian right away. Cats that don’t use the litter box often are ill, not stubborn.

Make a Colorful sun CatcherMake these colorful window decorations to brighten your child’s

bedroom during gloomy winter days. When the glue has dried, these sun catchers will have the look of stained glass. Help your kids create a design of a character or object from their favorite books and stories.

You’ll need:--Plastic wrap--Plastic or paper cups--All-purpose, white household glue--Food coloring--Several thick, black pipe cleaners in 12-inch lengths--Ribbon, string or cording

Think about what kind of sun catcher you would like to make, such as a star, heart or daisy. For your first project, make it as simple as possible. Use basic drawings from coloring books to get yours started, if you wish. As you get more proficient, make a heart for Valentine’s Day, a shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day or a decorated egg for Easter.

Bend and attach pipe cleaners together to get your desired shape, and glue the shape completely flat onto a sheet of plastic wrap. Add details by gluing smaller lengths of pipe cleaner on the inside of the design, like a small circle for the center of a flower. (It is very important that pipe cleaners adhere to the plastic wrap.) Your design should

look similar to the outlines on a coloring-book page. Let dry. Now it’s time to add the color.Pour 3-4 tablespoons of glue into a paper cup. Add 5-10 drops of food coloring, and stir. Mix glue and food coloring in additional cups if you wish to have a rainbow of colors. Pour the colored glue inside the pipe-cleaner shape. If you added details, pour different

colors in the various sections. Let dry completely. (It usually takes about a day.)When dry, the colored glue will appear translucent. Carefully peel off the plastic wrap from the sun catcher and discard. Hang your beautiful design in a sunny window using cording or ribbon.
