Fundamental physics by laser

• Ultrahigh energy physics (as Suzuki urges, toward PeV)• Laser collider (at or beyond TeV, as Mourou is pursuing)• Ultrahigh acceleration physics : Larmor radiation detection, Landau Lifshitz generalization test, Is there collective version of the above (as Habs is pursuing?) Unruh radiation test (is there collective version, as Habs et al.

pursue?)• Vacuum dielectric property • Schwinger physics• Beyond QED vacuum• What can be done in the facility at LMU/MPQ, what can be done at

facility at ATF2, what can be done at ELI?

World-class research infrastructures

Key element of the Lund declaration adopted on 8 July 09

- Essential for Europe’s researchers to stay at the forefront of research development

- Key component of Europe’s competitiveness in “frontier” research

Key Challenges:

- Overcoming fragmentation in Europe- Coping with increasing costs / complexity

- Improving efficiency of (and access to) research services, incl. e-infrastructures

Willingness to develop an ‘eco-system’

of Research Infrastructures within ERA

a) Large (single-sited) facilitiesb) Distributed European Facilitiesc) Network of national facilities

Based on a) a consistent roadmap

from the European stakeholdersb) Links with universities & schoolsc) Network of industrial suppliers /

Characteristics of this site choices

• Each pillar for each site, among the four pillars suggested by SAC Report (May 27,2009)

• Three separate sites, constituting a new model of EU science centers; also in three emerging countries

• The fourth pillar to be decided in 2012• Governance expected to ensure integrity and

pan-European character of ELI• Thus consistent with SAC science advice

Challenges

• How to reach the ultimate goal of ‘extreme light’• How to integrate the ELI science as a whole

through three/four pillars• Three centers to compliment and excel in its

own strength and compete for the best, rather than to line up at the slowest of the three

• Time limited at 2015• High intensity site selection at 2012• Technology transfer• Personnel development

Needed Goals

• Strive for science-driven world leadership and excellence

• Retention of the original goals of ELI: Extreme Light and its science

• Integration of science among the three/four Centers, integration of more developed countries and centers in EU; ample communications among these

• Ability to execute projects not waiting other two Centers; front-loaded execution

• Exchange info and personnel

Some Suggested Steps

• SAC to ask each Country to brief SAC on the status and plan of its science and/or site visit by SAC members. Receive some scientific status report

• Identify each Center’s core competence and its major goals and their relation to the overall Centers

• Chart out its strategy to achieve these above• The leadership of each Country / Center to propose

its inter-Central complementary seminars and/or communication avenues

• The leadership to suggest collaborative scheme with other Center(s) on some of the overlapping projects

Can the society continue to support ever escalating accelerators?

Accelerator = crown of 20th C science Accelerator = crown of 20th C science

Unlike the contemporary science installations developed in 20th C (such as high energy accelerator, fusion, astronomy…), ELI could be different:

transformative technology (even to change the underlining method) in 21st break down the boundaries that exited in 20th C (such as emerging and developed)
