To Lakewood Volunteers,

Very special thanks to the over 300 Lakewood members who support and work hard before, during and after the Keels & Wheels weekend. You are the secret weapon we have that none of our counterparts across the country can boast of. Without you, this great endeavour would not be possible. Thank you so very much.

Bob Fuller, Concours ChairmanOn behalf of the officers and directors of LYC Concours Corp.

How to adequately express appreciation for the many ways the Ladies of the Lakewood Ladies Association has supported this Concours since the beginning?

Suffice to say that the efforts of each of you individually and collectively has contributed greatly to the “special feeling” which our guests have when they leave their weekend at Lakewood. Thank you very much.

Welcome to the 2021 Keels and Wheels Concours D’Elegance and for those of you in from out of town, welcome to Seabrook. We are so glad to be holding this historic car and vintage boat show

once again. 2020 was definitely memorable year, but it was a year we all hope to put in the past. The City of Seabrook is beyond honored to host this incredible event that benefits non-profits in our area.

As a longtime resident of Seabrook, Keels and Wheels is one of my favorite events. Cars have always been a passion of mine and from 1972 to 1996 I raced Formula type race cars, and over the years have owned many classic cars. I can spend hours admiring the classic automobiles and vintage wooden boats that are on display at the beautiful Lakewood Yacht Club, and so will you.

Whether you are a Seabrook resident or visiting us for the first time I highly recommend taking a tour of our small town. With over 12-miles of hike and bike trails that connect our beautiful parks, May is the perfect time to take a walk and catch a glimpse of Seabrook. Be sure to take a Pelican selfie at the Marcy Fryday Pelican Path Park right next to the Seabrook Community House and the many colorful pelicans that are scattered throughout the city.

If you are hungry check out one, or several of our restaurants. Seabrook is where the locals go to eat, and we are known for our mom and pop eateries. You can find fresh seafood at Tookies Seafood, spicy Thai cuisine at Merlion, home cooking at Classic Café, Italian food at Mario’s Flying Pizza or Villa Capri, the uniqueness of gourmet Mac and Cheese and craft beer at the BackYard,

and the world-famous Seabrook Waffle Company to satisfy your sweet tooth.

We have six beautiful hotels, a newly built RV Park and three cozy bed and breakfasts to help you relax after an exciting and fun filled day on the Bay. All of our lodging is conveniently located and accessible to several Bay Area Houston attractions such as Space Center Houston and the Boardwalk.

After visiting Seabrook, you may just want to relocate to here. And I don’t blame you. My wife, Tamara, and I have lived in Seabrook for over twenty years. It is our home and we would love for you to consider making it your home too.

I hope you enjoy your day at Keels and Wheels Concours D’Elegance, and as Mayor of Seabrook, I can say it is truly an honor to be affiliated with this world-class event. I look forward to many more years of its continued success.

PETER MILES

Page 17: Keels & Wheels

Peter Miles — motorsports Icon Ken Miles’ son, did not refuse the opportunity to come to Seabrook,

Texas when asked to be one of the Grand Marshal’s for the Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance 25th anniversary event.

Peter and his father’s legacy was recently re-introduced to families across the country with the 2019 Academy-Award winning film, “Ford v. Ferrari.” Depicting the journey to the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans in France, the movie portrayed Carroll Shelby and his father’s successful impact on the development of the Shelby Cobra — a pinnacle moment for American motorsports.

After his father’s tragic passing, Peter went to work for his father’s friend, Dick Troutman at the Troutman and Barnes custom car shop in Culver

City, California. He worked there for 14 years before moving to Precision Performance Inc., in 1986. From here, he advanced from fabricator to mechanic and crew chief, where he was the crew chief for off-road racing legend Ivan “Ironman” Stewart, winning the 1991 Nissan 400 in Nevada. Presently, he works for a private car collector in Monterey, California.

Admiring the technology, Peter revels in the sheer creativity and ingenuity that the mechanics and engineers put

into building cars in the 1920’s and 1930’s. His favorite cars to drive are the 1912 Rolls Royce’s, late 1920’s Bentleys, and Ferrari’s from the 1950’s and 1960’s. With cars generally becoming more electronic, Peter commented that when you worked on vintage cars, part of the challenge was understanding the theory behind the part and why the engineer put the car together the way that they did.

Peter is still actively involved in car shows; however this will be his first time visiting the Houston area and attending Keels & Wheels Concours d’ Elegance. He enjoys attending events like these to not only admire the craftsmanship of the cars, but also be a part of a group of individuals who share the same passion. Peter said that it is becoming harder and harder to find people who enjoy vintage cars, so when he has the chance to meet more, he never misses the opportunity!

Headlining Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance event this year is a Ford v. Ferrari [Film]

exhibit featuring three exclusive cars used in the 2019 Academy Award winning movie, “Ford v. Ferrari,” with descendants from the legendary Shelby motorsports team as this year’s Grand Marshals.

Depicting the journey to the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans in France, the movie follows a determined team of American and British engineers and designers, led by Carroll Shelby, and his driver, Ken Miles, in building the Ford GT40 and defeating the dominant Italian racing team, Scuderia Ferrari. This was a pinnacle moment for American motorsports.

CARS ON DISPLAYProudly on display in the exhibit will be the Ken Miles Hero GT40 Mark II, and the Ferrari 330 P3 #27, as well as the Shelby Cobra 1 from Aaron Shelby’s personal car collection.

On loan from the collection of Michael and Kimberly Newman and Newman Racing Stables of Washington State, this GT40 was the exact car that Christian Bale drove throughout the movie. Being such an integral part of the film, no detail could be spared. Built at Superperformance in Irvine,

CA, this car is powered by a specially prepared Roush 4271R V-8 engine built to 511 Cl producing 604 HP and 572 lb-ft of torque. This engine employs numerous performance features such as a K&N Inglese-style injection system and a rear-exit “Bundle of Snakes” exhaust. Adding to the authenticity of the vehicle, it was signed by both Ken Miles’ 1966 crew chief, Charlie Agapiou, and Peter Miles, Ken Miles’ son.

The Ferrari 330 P3 #27 car joining the Keels & Wheels show was the actual stunt car used for the movie. It was 1 of 6 that was supplied for filming, but was the only one that exceeded that 500hp. Despite the car weighing 2300lbs, its horsepower was brought up to 625hp, making it quite the handful! This car was changed multiple times to play

different Ferraris (#20, #21, and #19) for the high speed shots and was used for all the high-speed passes. The cars were built to 50% completion by RCR out of Frazier, Michigan, and were finished as needed.

The Shelby Cobra 1 that attendees can view in the exhibit was used in the Ford v. Ferrari [Film] movie in two configurations. Most prominently, it was the Cobra that Matt Damon’s character, Carroll Shelby, drove in the film. It was also used as a background race car in several scenes.

A REAL TEAM EffORT While attendees can marvel at the engineering and craftsmanship that went into the development of these race cars, it’s also what they represent and the story that they tell. When talking to Peter Miles about the movie, he valued the fact at how wholesome the film was and how it was centered around family. And even though the film highlighted Shelby and his father’s successes, Peter commented that it was truly a team effort to win the Le Mans in 1966.

Sharing an exclusive fact with Keels & Wheels attendees — Peter said that contrary to what the movie depicted, his father and Carroll Shelby never got into a fist fight!

would like to welcome everyone to the 25th Anniversary of Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance. In 1996, our founders Bob Fuller and Paul Merryman set out to organize and host the nation’s

largest and most prestigious classic car and vintage wooden boat event.

Our goal is to educate people about history of classic automobiles and boats. This year we have over 200 exceptional cars, motorcycles, and trucks as well as nearly 70 classic boats. Do not miss the Ford v. Ferrari exhibit featuring cars from the movie.

We want to thank Lakewood Yacht Club for hosting this event and sharing their spectacular grounds. The Cities of Seabrook and Nassau Bay for their tremendous support. All our sponsors who make this event possible. And I especially want to thank all of the volunteers who are so welcoming to our guests and without whom Keels & Wheels would not be possible.

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 25th Anniversary, even though it is a year late. What a peculiar year we have survived. The year 2020, our actual 25th year, brought surprises every day. We feel blessed to continue our tradition. Our hope is that

you will enjoy the program we have assembled featuring the finest examples of classic cars and vintage boats in the country.

This year we are very excited to display the cars from the movie “Ford vs. Ferrari”. The movie captured the excitement around the showdown between automotive giants Ford and Ferrari.

Attending this year as Grand Marshals are descendants of the Ford team, Aaron Shelby and Peter Miles. We are more

than delighted to have them with us this year. They will be available to sign autographs and take photographs during the weekend.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the owners of the movie cars. Michael Newman is the owner of the Ford GT used in the movie. The counterpart Ferrari is owned by Billy Stabile. We are very proud to present these cars for your pleasure. The Featured Marques this years are Pre-War Packards, Corvettes (1953-72) and Porsche (1945-1973). On the boat side we are featuring the Yellow Jacket, a company once owned by western movie star, Roy Rogers. We also will display a Station Wagon built by Ford Motor Company for Roy Rogers.

Among our special guests this year are Bill Warner, Founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours. Bill and thousands of friends celebrated their 25th Anniversary in March of last year. Congratulations to Bill and his organization.

We are supporting three charities this year. They include Today’s Harbor for Children, Lighthouse Charity Team and Cole Gordon Foundation.

Celebrating 25 years would not be possible without the support of Sponsors, Car and Boat Exhibitors, Volunteers and those who have attended each year. Many of our sponsors have tented booths on the grounds of Lakewood. We hope you will visit those sponsors who have supported Keels & Wheels this year. Our volunteers are almost 100% Lakewood members. They literally own the clubhouse and grounds and marinas where Keels & Wheels displays the cars and boats.

While thanking those responsible, we must recognize and thank Paul Merryman, Founding Co-Chairman of Keels and Wheels. Paul is virtually responsible for making the vintage boat part of our show. Without Paul’s efforts we would be a car show, one of many. Not the case however. We now celebrate 25 years of the unique presentation of classic cars and boats, the largest such display in the country.

We hope you will enjoy the show and plan to join us next year as we begin our next 25 years.

After an untimely one-year COVID-19 delay, the Keels & Wheels Team of Professional Volunteers are anxiously preparing and awaiting the planned

extravaganza of our 25th anniversary celebration.

As Co-Founder of the event, I feel a great sense of pride in being there at the inception and still actively being a part of this nationally recognized event the show has become. Beginning this event with Bob Fuller 25 years ago is something truly incredible and a real testament to the passion from our volunteers who continually make the show a yearly success.

We were all concerned about what losing a year’s attraction would have on our attendance and participation for 2021, but I have been very pleased with the overwhelming response from both our exhibitors and car and boat owners – it was apparent that everyone was eager to get together and unite over one of our favorite pastimes!

Upon our return to the Concours circuit, the event this year is certainly one of the most outstanding in many years. With never before seen attractions, some very special guests, a lot of familiar faces, a completely different layout of the Lakewood Yacht Club Grounds, and concessions, you will certainly enjoy the extra effort our team has put together for you and your family.

After retiring a couple of years ago, it’s been fun and exciting to assist the Keels & Wheels team from the side lines, but upon doing so, I’ve also found out full retirement is not for everyone!

A special thanks to all of you involved in making the 25th Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance the phenomenal event it has become. We truly value your support and look forward to the next 25!

Chuck Webb, a longtime member of the Southwest Chapter of the ACBS, and exhibitor of classic boats at Keels and Wheels for many years passed away from complications of COVID-19 last summer. A resident of Austin, TX. Chuck was an avid wooden boat enthusiast whose hobbies included

restoring wooden boats and building wooden kayaks and canoes. Chuck’s family founded Hafer Craft Boats at East Okoboji, Iowa in the late 1890’s and built wooden boats until the early 1960’s. Chuck is survived by his wife Liz. Members of the Southwest Chapter will miss him greatly.

As President of the International ACBS, I want to welcome all who attend this first real boat show of 2021. This will be my first show since becoming President in 2019. I give the Keels and Wheels committee a lot of credit

and thank you for holding this event even with COVID still lurking around.

I remember when my Dad attended the show in 2007 (he was the International President that year) and told me what great people he met there. I knew at some point I would make it but never thought as President.

My life with wooden boats started in the mid 1960’s as our family had just returned to California from 5 years of living in Connecticut. We used to visit Lake George and my Dad and I would watch the Century Resorters and Chris Craft Runabouts rip up and down the lake. He said to my Mom, “When we get back to California, we are getting one.” So, true his word, as soon as we got back, Dad bought a 17-foot 1959 Chris Craft Sportsman. There were six of us kids at the time and on weekends we would all squeeze

into that boat, taking turns skiing behind it. At the end of the afternoon, Dad would find a place in the shade to sit on the beach while us kids floated around just behind the boat. It was a simpler time back then but so many happy memories.

Since then, our family has had 3 other wooded boats and 2 classic fiberglass boats. We have restored all of them ourselves. The hours late at night in my Dad’s garage were the best. Discussing varnishes, which grade of sandpaper to use, punching plugs, you name it, those memories will be cherished forever. I am happy to be going to the show to share your memories and stories as each boat has a “tale.”

Enjoy the show.

Welcome to the 25th Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance. It is an honor for the Southwest Chapter

of the Antique and Classic Boat Society to assist the Concours committee in organizing the boat portion of this show. Our members and volunteers look forward to this event every year.

This year we are featuring Century and Yellow Jacket boats. Century has been manufacturing quality boats since the 1920’s and is still in business today. Many fine examples of their work are on display here this weekend. Representatives of the Century Boat Club are on site as well. Yellow Jackets were manufactured in Denison, Texas in the 1950’s. Several members of the Wooden Boat Association of North Texas have their Yellow Jackets here. I want to thank both groups for their assistance in making this show a memorable one.

In addition to the marque boats, there are many other examples of quality antique and classic boats of all hull types plus contemporary wooden boats on display. I want to thank the exhibitors who have taken the time and effort necessary to bring these wonderful vessels here for display this weekend.

Many of the boat owners will be on the docks and they are very willing to answer any questions that you may have. Please stop by the Southwest Chapter ACBS booth to find out more about our organization. After the show, you can find us on the ACBS.org website or on our chapter Facebook page (ACBS Southwest Chapter – Vintage Boating).

I hope you enjoy our show,

2020 WAS A BAD YEAR in so many ways. Losing our dear friend, Dave Clayton, is at the top of that list for us at Keels and Wheels.

Dave worked hard each year to make sure our show was successful. His attention to detail ensured that the myriad of details to put on the show all came together.

Dave served as our Board Chairman for several years and oversaw the growth of size and scope of Keels and Wheels. He was not only an effective leader, he was a good friend. His presence will be sorely missed.

Please join us as we extend our most sincere condolences to his wonderful wife, Roz Clayton.

Before the turn of the century the Rougers Hotel, a three story building, was located on the present grounds of Lakewood Yacht Club. Colorful surreys

from the hotel would pick up the guests from the Southern Pacific train station and take them to the Rougers. The hotel’s party fishing boats were tied up in the vicinity of the present harbor. The old oak trees and some of the palm trees near the club were planted before 1900. The Rougers Hotel withstood the Galveston Flood of 1900 and operated until about 1918 after which it remained vacant until the mid-thirties when it was torn down. Mr. Sharp, the owner, then sold the land to Ben Taub who much later sold the property to Lakewood Yacht Club.

Lakewood Yacht Club officially opened its doors on August 19, 1955. Many of the organizers of the club were members of the Houston Yacht Club. It is said that one of the reasons Lakewood came into being was because a number of people wanted a club solely for power boaters and the Houston Yacht Club was becoming a sail boater’s club.

The existing Bermuda-style clubhouse, situated on 35 acres, is the original structure built in 1955 along with the swimming pool and patio, one tennis court and three sheds with slips for 54 cabin cruisers.

Our marina includes 382 slips and a large protected inner harbour. Membership averages 500 members. Since 1970, sailors have become a very welcome and active contingent of the membership. At the present time there are about 60 percent sailboats and 40 percent powerboats berthed at our docks. Many members live on these boats, and in apartments and townhouses at the club. Our dining room has become renowned for its fine cuisine. In 1985 a large ballroom was added, bringing a lovely, new dimension to the social facilities. Two more tennis courts have been added also, and the tennis program has become quite popular with a large segment of members.

One of our proudest achievements has been the organization and building of our youth program, now more than 50 members strong. Many participants in this group have won local, national and international awards. As the program continues to grow, we know that this provides a strong base for the future of our club.

Lakewood Yacht Club continues to build and add new facilities, maintaining a well-established reputation as a Corinthian yacht club, one of the top ten in the United States.

Mr. Ed Lucas has a list of antique and collector car credentials totaling over four pages and reads like a novel. Lucas has been deemed the “Voice of the Concours.” We are thrilled to have him back as

the Master of Ceremonies for the 2021 Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance.

Lucas began his love affair with classic automobiles at an early age. His first car was a 1931 Chevrolet, 5-window coupe. A ride in a Duesenberg at age 14 helped to point him in the direction of Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg automobiles. He developed a passion for these marques which still exists to this day.

Lucas was immediately attracted to judging the beautiful classic automobiles and eventually became Chief Judge of the Michigan Region of the Classic Car Club of America for five years. A true automotive historian, he is highly sought after for his knowledge and expertise in the collector car arena, and is a long-standing member of the Classic Car Club of America, Antique Automobile Club of America, and the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg (ACD) Club, among many others. As an original member of in 1979 of the prestigious Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance, Lucas annually served as its Master of Ceremonies.

Lucas is Master of Ceremonies at a dozen other Concours d’Elegance events, plus 20 auctions and car shows annually around the country, including announcer and expert commentator of the Barrett Jackson Collector Car Auction, RM Collector Car Auctions, Leake Auction Company, and the Kruse Auction Organization in Auburn, Indiana.

Lucas has worked with many VIP’s at various collector car events including several race car drivers such as Dan Gurney, Sir Sterling Moss, Bobby Uncer, Phil Hill, Parnelli Jones, and Bobby Allison, along with celebrities such as Paul Newman, Jay Leno, George Barris, Wayne Newton, Robert Mitchum, Alec Baldwin, Tony Curtis, Christy Brinkley, and Jerry Seinfeld. Automotive leaders which Lucas has had the pleasure of working with include Lee Iacocca, Edsel Ford II, Gordon Buehrig, Pete Estes, Bob Lutz, William Mitchell, and John Z. DeLorean. Lastly, he has worked with several sports figures including Scotty Bowman, Greg Louganis, Reggie Jackson, and Cecil Fielder, and with dignitaries such as Zora Arkus-Duntov, Andy Granatelli, Carroll Shelby, Chip Foose, Boyd Coddington, and David E. Davis.

Throughout this tenure, Lucas has authored more than two dozen articles on antique and classic cars, primarily Auburn, Cord, and Duesenbergs. He spent 17 years in Worldwide Automotive customer relations with TRW, Inc., preceded by two years at the Detroit Institute of Cancer Research, and is a graduate of both Michigan State University and Stanford University in a variety of studies. He is the recipient of the National Automotive Historian Award sponsored by General Motors Corporation, and the annual Spirit of Goodwill Award from the Kruse Auction Company. A member of the Society of Automotive Historians, he is acquainted with car collectors from coast to coast, as well as internationally, and is equally at home on the judging field or award platform.

K ip Wasenko began his 40-year Design Career at General Motors in June, 1968. During this time his

career included the U.S., Europe and Australia. He retired in May, 2008.

At GM Design he was Chief Designer of Saturn, Chevrolet Studio, Oldsmobile Studio, Cadillac Studio and several Advance Studios, including the GM Performance Division.

In 1973, Kip received his first Design Patent on the Two-Rotor Mid-Engine Corvette Concept Car which is now on display at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.

He also designed many Indy 500 and Daytona 500 Pace Cars. The most exotic was the Mid-Engine Buick Wildcat with its exposed Indy 500 Engine by Buick. This Mid-Engine Buick Wildcat was a true Supercar Concept that would rival today’s million dollar Supercars.

This Design initiated the Art & Science Design Direction which was recognized as a Design Renaissance for Cadillac. The EVOQ was sold to the public as the Cadillac XLR-V. Kip applied the same Design Philosophy to the CTS-V,

STS-V and the Cadillac LMP Race Car developed with Riley & Scott that raced Le Mans. In addition he designed the winning CTS-VR World Challenge Cadillac Race Cars by Pratt & Miller.

In February of 2005, Motor Trend magazine recognized Kip’s contribution on their Top 50 Power List, “he’s made Cadillac’s cool again.”

Kip is a Ferrari enthusiast and has owned his 1970 Ferrari 246GT Dino since 1975. As an amateur race car driver, Kip has raced his Corvette for the past 27 seasons.

We salute Bill Warner for creating what many feel is the finest

Concours event in the country. Ironically, Amelia Island Concours was founded the same year as Keels & Wheels, only a month apart. Bill has a rich history in automotive racing. Race cars and famous drivers are a major feature of the Amelia Island show.

Held at the St. Regis Hotel, the show features over 300 cars from all over the country. The multiple ballrooms in the hotel allow for several seminars and merchandise displays, as well as a major car auction.

Bill’s leadership has inspired many others to form Concours events around the United States. We are proud that Keels & Wheels remains the first to combine cars and boats. We honor Bill and his creation at Amelia Island, as the source of inspiration and enjoyment to thousands of car collectors and enthusiasts.

Congratulations Bill on 25 years of presenting a show featuring the finest display of classic cars in the country!

BARRY MEGUIAR

Barry is the third generation President of Meguiar’s Car Wax, the top selling car wax in America and around the world. While his father and grandfather’s focus was

on car dealers and body shops, Barry watched the car hobby start at the end of World War II and jumped in with both feet after graduating college in 1964.

He launched Meguiar’s into the retail market by going to car shows and talking to Car Guys one on one. That singular focus explains the success of the Meguiar’s brand globally. Meguiar’s ‘Men in Black’ are now at almost every major car show in the world every weekend. And few, if any, Car Guys have attended as many car shows, of all types and descriptions, in as many places all over the world, as Barry Meguiar.

Barry’s heroes in the car hobby as a child, from Carroll Shelby and Dan Gurney, to

George Barris and Gene Winfield, became his close friends as an adult. They inspired him to launch Car Crazy TV on SpeedVision, to capture the passion of Car Guys for a global audience. The show ran for 18 years reaching the global audience on Discovery Networks.

Through the years, Barry has been honored as the Grand Marshal for numerous events, including the Woodward Dream Cruise, Route 66, The Copper State 1000 and the St. John Concours in Detroit. His honors range from The Grand Nationals Industry Achievement Award, Cruising Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award, the Petersen Automotive Museum’s Icon of the Year Award and SEMA’s Hall of Fame.

Barry and his wife Karen have been married for 57 years, keeping honoring God and leading people to Him as their highest priority.

For the past 25 years, the Keels & Wheels event has brought some of the most unique and truly one-of-a-kind classic cars to the Lakewood Yacht Club. While automobile lovers may marvel at the car’s aesthetics and horsepower, it’s

truly the lore and stories behind these cars that make a lasting impression. Margaret Dunning’s 1930 Packard 740 Roadster is no exception, truly earning her the nickname, “Belle of the Concours.”

Packard’s slogan was “Ask the man who owns one.” In the case of this 1930 Packard 740 Roadster, one would have to ask the woman who owned one. Margaret purchased her 740 roadster in 1949 and for the next 66 years drove her Packard regularly and performed all of the routine maintenance. She was a spry 101 years of age when she first participated in the Keels & Wheels Concours D’Elegance event. Her story truly captivated those that saw her and spoke with her, prompting the New York Times to publish a feature story about her and her car in the Sunday’s paper. This article skyrocketed her popularity on the car show circuit and subsequently was invited to every major Concours shows across the country. The following year, Jay Leno presented her with the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) Award at the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance event. Not slowing down, in 2013, at age 103, Margaret drove her Packard for a 70 mile per hour lap at the Indianapolis 500 speedway earning her a spot in Ripley’s Believe It or Not annual Book of Amazements. Her roadster is also believed to be the first 100 point CCCA Classic.

Margaret was also known for her philanthropy - making substantial donations to the library and historical society in Plymouth, Michigan, and was a great friend of the Classic Car Club of America Museum. Following her passing on May 17, 2015, just a month shy of her 105th birthday, Margaret left instructions in her will that the museum was to receive her beloved 1930 Packard. For the Keels & Wheels 25th anniversary event, we are honored to proudly display Dunning’s Packard and to continue to share her love of classic cars with attendees.

The Century Boat Company has been making quality runabout boats for almost 100 years.

Today, headquarters are near Orlando, Florida where they hand craft sport, fishing and launch style boats for the discriminating boater.

The classic mahogany and fiberglass Century boats presented at boat shows like Keels & Wheels are known for their upscale design, over the top upholstery, abundant gleaming chrome hardware and proud owners. Century boats are famous for their powerful engines made by Chrysler Marine, Crusader, Dearborn Marine Interceptors and the older staid Graymarine. Packing high horse power with plentiful cubic engines of displacement, Century boats are legendary the “fastest boat on the lake”.

Over the years many different models and styles were made and some of the more renowned nameplates are the Coronado, Arabian and Resorter models. During the 1950s – 1960s Century boats were greatly influenced by automotive designs notably their dash board gauges, steering wheels, windshields, seating and upholstery. Many of the models were offered with

hard & soft tops and the Coronado even had a sliding sun roof panel. In the beginning in 1926 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin the “King of the Seas” Century race boats were

small, outboard hydroplane speed demons. If you drove a Century, you were found in the Winners Circle. The company went on to make an everyman’s Sportsman outboard and small inboards after moving to Michigan. During WWII, Century made a six man assault boat used to cross rivers in Europe. During the heydays of the 50’s & 60’s the Century Resorter was the preferred water ski boat of Cypress Gardens, the US Water Skiing Association, the Kennedy’s and many others.

At the end of the wooden boat building era in the 1960s, Century was the largest producer of mahogany pleasure runabout boats in the USA. Known for its “reddish stained” African Mahogany, these Thoroughbreds – the Century moniker – are highly collectable today.

The 1,000 members of the Century Boat Club proudly care for and show their Thoroughbreds at boat shows across the country. Annually they gather for the Thoroughbred Round Up in Manistee, Michigan in

September. BTW, one of the largest Century dealers was Century Boats of Houston, Texas where Frank Adams made many a happy Century owner. Ride a Thoroughbred.

Since our last presentation of Keels & Wheels, we have lost one of our most

avid supporters and loyal participants, Jim Snell.

Jim was an avid lover of all things classic wooden boats - leading him to be a Chris Craft boat dealer in the Beaumont, Texas area during the 1950’s and serving on the Board of Directors for the Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS).

Throughout his lifetime, he owned and restored several classic wooden boats including a 1959 21’ Capri, a 1955 18’ Continental, and a 1949 23’ Express Cruiser. But his most prized restoration was his 1965 46’ Constellation named, “Finale.”

It wasn’t a true Keels & Wheels event if, “Finale,” wasn’t at the Lakewood Yacht Club. A continuous winner at our show, their shelves

were filled with trophies that they were awarded at various boat shows they entered along their cruise routes. Jim always welcomed the curious crowds and often gave guests the opportunity to tour his authentically restored yacht.

If they were not at Keels & Wheels, Jim and his wife Patsy were otherwise cruising the Eastern part of the United States, or the beautiful blue waters of the Bahamas - always making friends wherever they went!

Jim will be greatly missed, but we hope that attendees this year share his love of wooden boats on his behalf.

Having been around wooden boats for over 25 years, Clay Thompson has enjoyed the hobby

immensely, restoring his own boats, which number over 20, and he still owns 7 of them.

While growing up, his parents were, along with a great number of Americans, caught up in the late 50’s wave of boating. That is when small fiberglass boats were new and in their heyday, and right along with that, the outboard motors increased in power and soon had electric start. Now for really the first time, one could hitch up a boat to the family sedan and have a weekend of fun at a local lake. As he enjoyed that boating and skiing as a child, the die was cast.

Since then, boating in one sort or another has been a way of life for spare time. In 1989, Clay bought a 1955 wooden Chris Craft and used it often, but it leaked badly, and when he learned of a new system to repair the bottom, he put that to use. Of course, that led to learning more to keep the rest of the boat’s wood looking good. He found all this

work very interesting and soon was enjoying a nice hobby of just messing around with wood boats, which he thought was great fun.

Since then, he has met many friends and attended many boat shows. Each newly restored project boat that he bought was enjoyed and taken to boat shows for a great weekend outing, viewing other boats and acquiring knowledge of wood boats along the way.

Now, a recognized Antique and Classic Boat Society Judge, Clay has judged at ACBS International shows for 8 years, has been a Tahoe Concours d’Elegance judge, and ACBS Heartland Chapter annual show Chief Judge. Clay and his wife, Patty, were one of the original couples that started the Heartland Chapter from the beginning, in 1993. In 2018 they attended their chapter’s 25th Annual Boat Show at Grand Lake, OK.

The Thompson’s have a successful swimming pool construction and supply business in its 46th year, having built hundreds of pools in

Oklahoma and north Texas. Their retail store carries a full line of supplies and equipment and they do all phases of construction and custom concrete work to create some really beautiful backyard pools, as well as building several city commercial pools and splash pads. Clay and Patty have come a long way in their business, which now includes their son and daughter as well.

A long time supporter of the Keels & Wheels event, Clay and his wife, Patty, have attended each year, bringing different boats, and making new friends along the way. This show is also a social event where people with like interests can enjoy each other along with the beautiful cars and classic boats.

Clay invites you to see all the wonderful classic boats and cars and has a request, for you, as you walk the grounds and enjoy the show, please take some time to visit with the owners, as they have worked hard to bring and display their prized boats and cars.

Keels & Wheels is proud to welcome Yellow Jacket boats and owners to the 25th Annual Concours d’Elegance.

Yellow Jacket Boats were built right here in Texas, in Denison, near Lake Texoma from 1949-1959. Owner and Founder Richard “Mac” McDerby had been a licensed commercial captain in New Orleans, and became Andrew Jackson Higgins’ right hand man during WWII, as Higgins produced hundreds of landing craft and other boat for the war effort.

When he came to Denison for the first time in 1945, Mac was overseeing amphibious assault reenactments to sell war bonds during the height of hostilities in the Pacific Theater. In Denison, he would meet and eventually marry Catherine Conatser, and, after the war, establish the

McDerby-Conatser Boat Company with Catherine’s brother, Bill. Their first boats in 1949 were plywood-on-frame fishing boats, but they soon began to import molded plywood hulls from Industrial Shipping in Nova Scotia, Canada, and finish them with stylish decks, transoms and trim. The Yellow Jacket hull design was done by naval architect, Richard Cole. By 1952, those racy molded-hull boats would become their trademark, and Mac changed the company name to Yellow Jacket Boat Company. In 1956, Wesley Theakston, an executive with Industrial Shipping, left Nova Scotia to open his own molded hull fabrication facility for Yellow Jacket on McDerby’s property in Denison.

In the mid-50s, Roy Rogers, one of the biggest film, TV and recording stars of the day, began racing Yellow Jacket Boats, and eventually became the spokesperson and even Vice President for the company. Mac had a keen marketing sense, and not only capitalized on Roy Rogers’ involvement, but also donated Yellow Jacket Boats to President Eisenhower (a Denison native), House Speaker Sam Rayburn, and TV personality Steve Allen, all with accompanying media fanfare.

By the time the operation closed in 1959, there were thousands of fast, affordable molded-hull Yellow Jacket boats skimming across the lakes and coastal waters of the country. Stories abound of baby boomers who learned to ski behind a Yellow Jacket. There are equally fond memories of kids who napped under the foredeck while their dads fished from their Yellow Jackets.

Hundreds of Yellow Jackets survive. Many have been restored to original condition. Others are languishing in sheds and barns and deserve to be brought back to life. Several Texas-based ACBS members who also belong to the Wooden Boat Association of North Texas (WBA) have undertaken Yellow Jacket restorations over the past decade. You can read more about the history and current status of Yellow Jacket boats by visiting historywithheart.com and clicking on “Yellow Jacket Boats”.
