COMMON PLANNING TIME 1:40 - 2:38

On structured days, elementary students must log on at 8:40 a.m. and follow the schedule developed by their grade level

teachers. It is suggested that you follow the period bell schedule and collaborate with your grade level partners to determine

what works best.

The minutes noted above will be utilized for live synchronous instruction on structured days. The NJDOE requires that

students receive four hours of “active instruction” daily. In addition to the amount of prescribed live instructional minutes

noted, K-5 teachers may wish to post additional assignments and videos as needed in order to fulfill the requirement. When

developing daily and weekly schedules, special consideration must be given to the needs of Special Education,

Bilingual/ESL and ASI students.

The following is K-5 guidance regarding the number of periods(time) in the elementary bell schedule that should be allotted

by subject:

***Although a lunch period is provided at the end of the instructional day, we have retained lunch in the regular

schedule for students. This time should be used as a screen break and provide students a chance to move around,

grab a snack, etc. Teachers can use the time to answer emails, etc.

PK-12 PLATFORM: GOOGLE CLASSROOM

In grades PK-12, the district will utilize GOOGLE CLASSROOM to maintain communication with students and parents, post

assignments, access all websites and platforms, and schedule class meetings. Teachers may also use the Remind app as

needed. All synchronous learning will be conducted through GOOGLE MEET. By utilizing one platform across all grade

levels, this will minimize confusion on the part of students and families, particularly those with siblings in multiple grade

levels.

All teachers and classes are expected to have their own Google Classroom Class Page. When an individual student logs

on to their Google Classroom, they should encounter a screen similar to the one below:

Page 12: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

11

ATTENDANCE ON GOOGLE CLASSROOM

Student attendance will be monitored and recorded daily to ensure compliance with the 180 day school year requirement.

Attendance will be taken daily Monday through Friday on both structured and flexible days.

Preschool through Grade Six

Attendance in Preschool through Grade 6 will be taken by teachers on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays (structured

learning days). Attendance on Tuesdays and Thursdays will be taken based on the completed work assigned on the flexible

days. Teachers will communicate with parents upon three consecutive absences to confirm that the student is sick. If

Page 13: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

12

unable to successfully contact a parent once a child reaches 3 absences, the teacher must advise the school counselor and

building administrator who will determine next steps.

Grades 7-12

Attendance on both structured and flexible days will be taken by period on Google Classroom.

On Structured Days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), teachers will take attendance based on student presence in virtual

lessons. Teachers must record daily class attendance by period on structured days in Genesis.

On Flexible Days (Tuesday & Thursday), teachers will post an attendance assignment which will be taken on Google

Classroom. Attendance must be submitted by students by 8pm daily. Teachers must record attendance in Genesis for the

prior day by 3pm daily. If students do not submit their attendance by 8pm, they will be marked absent for that day. Teachers

will communicate with parents upon three consecutive absences to confirm that the student is sick. If unable to successfully

contact a parent once a child reaches 3 absences, the teacher must advise the school counselor and building administrator

who will determine next steps.

Page 14: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

13

Teachers will track student attendance in Google Classroom by posting an attendance “assignment” that will look as follows:

Teachers will require students to type their first and last name and answer a simple question such as, “Are you ready to

begin your work today?” The only answer option will be “yes.” Students must submit their response. The attendance

assignment should be posted for students no later than 8am for the day.

If students do not submit their attendance by 8pm, they will be marked absent. Parents will be required to contact the school

nurse in the event their child is sick or will be absent from school on either structured or flexible days. Failure to contact the

school will result in their child receiving an unexcused absence for the school day. Teachers will follow up with parents

upon three consecutive absences to confirm that the student is sick. If unable to successfully contact a parent once a child

reaches 3 absences, the teacher must advise the school counselor or building administrator who will determine next steps.

POSTING ASSIGNMENTS ON GOOGLE CLASSROOM

Page 15: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

14

Teachers will post all daily assignments on the main page of their class page in Google Classroom. All assignments for the

day must be posted no later than 8am each day. ( Assignments may be scheduled to post at a specific time in Google

Classroom.)

TO DO LIST:

All assignments will be preceded by a daily posting of a “To Do List” for students. On this To Do List, teachers will briefly

outline step by step what students are expected to complete each day in the order of the tasks. The following is an

example:

ASSIGNMENT:

Page 16: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

15

All Assignments should be clear and also list specific steps for students as appropriate. The following is an example:

GOOGLE MEET

Page 17: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

16

In grades PK-12, Google Meet will be the platform utilized for virtual classroom meetings by ALL faculty. The following are

guidelines for the use of Google Meet with your students:

GOOGLE MEET GUIDELINES

1. Teachers and students must use only kearnyschools.com accounts for Google Meet; no students/teachers should be

using personal accounts for any remote learning purposes.

2. Maintain professional decorum (in appearance and speech) as one would during in-class lessons.

3. Always be aware that a parent may be in the room with the student; consider tone as you would when writing an email

to a parent.

4. Remain on topic with your objective; offer a follow up session if you cannot answer students' questions at the time of

lesson delivery.

5. Be cognizant and considerate of students' feelings and thoughts during virtual learning and during this difficult time.

Direct students in need to the appropriate counselor should they bring up sensitive topics which require such support

services.

6. Teachers should develop similar guidelines for their students that are age appropriate. Teachers should inform their

building principal or department supervisor of any students that conduct themselves inappropriately during virtual sessions.

*Please be advised that all school rules and policies remain in effect and the use of Google Hangouts or Meet is covered

under the Acceptable Use Policy.

Please note the following Google Meet updates and enhancements that will be available shortly:

Page 19: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

18

Classlink will be utilized as a SSO (Single Sign On) for students and parents in grades PK-12. The link will be shared directly in Google

Classroom. Once students are logged on to ClassLink, they will be brought to a page that is similar to the one below:

Students will then be able to click on the icon of the site/platform they need to access and will be taken directly to their

page/assignment. There will be no need for students and families to keep track of multiple usernames, passwords and

other login information. Webinars on the use of Classlink will be made available to staff.

ASSESSMENTS & GRADING

Page 20: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

19

Students will have 48 hours to complete all assignments. In the case of lengthier assignments or projects, it is the teacher's

discretion to determine a longer period of time before the assignment is due. Special consideration can be given to those

students that have a hardship. Otherwise, a failure to submit assignments in a timely manner will result in a loss of credit

for the assignment. When deemed appropriate, extensions may be granted if needed.

Participation in scheduled structured virtual classes is required. Failure to participate will result in a loss of credit for the

day unless there is an extenuating circumstance that prevents the student from participating. This will be determined on a

case by case basis by the teacher in conjunction with the building principal and/or department supervisor.

If there is reason to believe a student is not completing their work independently when required or if it appears that it is not

the student’s original work, the teacher should contact the parent directly to express his/her concern. If the situation persists,

the teacher should contact the building principal and/or department supervisor for further guidance.

Grading criteria will remain the same as prior to the pandemic and distance learning. Use teacher discretion when giving

diagnostic, formative and summative assessments. You may continue to assign projects, quizzes, etc. Grading should

primarily be based on submission and completion of work. We understand that at this time it may be difficult to gauge

student understanding and determine how much assistance students are receiving. Continue to give timely feedback to

students, with opportunities for those who cannot access instruction to make up missed assignments. (In assessing student

work, you may wish to use a check system, i.e.: √++ (complete all correct), √+ (complete most correct), √ (complete few

correct), √- (complete but incorrect). This is just an example; it is not mandatory. Report card comments in grades 6-12

will continue to include the following indicator: Distance Learning work has not been completed.

Gaps in student learning will be determined based on assessment results and including informal assessments of students

through assignments, virtual lessons, etc. Student progress during the school year should be assessed often through

formative assessments and instruction should be adjusted accordingly. During this time of virtual learning, collaboration

with the curriculum department, building principals, and grade level and subject area colleagues will be necessary to

Page 21: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

20

determine appropriate grading practices and maintain consistency in how students are assessed. This will be accomplished

through scheduled meetings occurring during the last hour of the school day.

The district will administer the following assessments at the beginning of the school year in order to support evaluation of

student strengths and determine areas in need of improvement. Assessment data will be utilized to determine which student

learning objectives/standards should be focused on. This information will inform next steps, including determining whether

remediation is required for an entire group of students or on an individual basis on any given skill/concept. All assessments

will be administered virtually on either a structured or flexible learning day as per teacher discretion within the testing

windows noted. It is important to relay to parents that students should complete assessments unassisted so that the data

is most reliable. Parents should also understand that the beginning of year assessments are not graded.

PARENT ORIENTATION & BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT/PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT

Page 24: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

23

During the first few weeks of school it is crucial to communicate with parents and students virtually during parent orientation

meetings and Back to School/Parent Information Nights. This is a time to get to know your students and families, share

your expectations and routines, explain your Google Classroom page, how assignments will be posted, etc.

Elementary Homeroom Teachers: During the week of September 8, teachers will schedule to meet with parents virtually

for up to one hour in order to introduce themselves and provide general information to parents regarding Google Classroom,

materials students will be receiving, expectations, etc. Teachers should also use this time to ensure they receive updated

contact information from parents (phone number and email address).

Middle & High School Teachers: During the week of September 8, teachers should communicate with parents via email

in order to introduce themselves and provide general information to parents regarding Google Classroom, materials students

will be receiving, expectations, etc. Teachers should also use this time to ensure they receive updated contact information

from parents (phone number and email address).

During the week of September 21, Back to School Night/Parent Information Night will be held as follows:

DATE SCHOOL TIME

September 22 All PK-6 Elementary Schools 7:00 p.m.

September 23 LMS 7:00 p.m.

September 24 KHS 7:00 p.m.

GENERAL GUIDANCE FOR TEACHERS

● During synchronous structured lessons (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) actual teaching of a skill/concept should be

taking place, not just chat sessions or simply directing students regarding a particular assignment.

Page 25: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

24

● Plan standards-based lessons to meet the needs of students at various levels

● Provide predictable routines and structures for students and maintain student engagement through varied

instructional strategies/modalities

● Communicate directly with parents when there is a concern and provide regular feedback to students and families

on expectations and progress.

● Establish a daily and weekly routine that is consistent and is coordinated with the grade level/subject area partners

in your school.

● Establish classroom community and routines and strong partnerships with parents

● At the beginning of the school year, provide parents with access to Google Classroom, Classlink and any other login

information needed. Meeting virtually with students and families prior to the first day of school is strongly encouraged

in order to begin building relationships and communicate expectations.

● By the end of the first full week of school, if contact has not been established with students/parents, teachers will

inform their building principal.

● Teachers must request updated contact information at the beginning of the school year which will include a phone

number and email address. In the event that attempts to contact the parent/student by phone, email, Google

Classroom, etc. prove to be unsuccessful, the teacher will notify the building principal and/or the school counselor in

order to determine next steps.

● Social Emotional Learning (SEL) should be incorporated into lessons where possible.

● On asynchronous Flexible virtual learning days (Tuesdays and Thursdays), the posting of recorded lessons for

students using Google extensions such as Screencastify is strongly encouraged.

● When assigning tasks, teachers must take into consideration the different learning abilities of students and how that

may contribute to the time it takes them to complete assignments. Reflect on the amount of work being assigned to

students and ask parents for feedback. We do not want to create a situation where distance learning is overly

burdensome for students, parents, or teachers. Teachers should use their discretion to strike an appropriate balance

between the required instruction while also considering needs at home. You know your students best and how long

a task might take them to complete - and how much longer it may take when it is being done at home with or without

parental support. We have to account for our individual community and the types of support, or lack thereof, that

students may experience at home. There may be language barriers, parents that still need to work, grandparents as

caretakers with no internet access, lack of knowledge in Google Classroom, and the list goes on. Flexibility is key.

Page 26: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

25

● Frequent articulation with grade level and subject area partners should be taking place during common planning time

in order to distribute tasks and to maintain consistency within a school. Collaboration to develop common

assignments, assist one another with technology and to troubleshoot issues that may arise will ease the burden and

help create consistency within a grade level/subject area in each individual school. District grade level and subject

area PLCs will be held on a regular basis in order for teachers to share what they are doing across schools.

Communication, partnership and unity in purpose is expected.

● Activities for the first nine days of school can include: those that build community and allows you to get to know your

students and for students to get to know you, reviewing health & safety protocol, instructing students on new

procedures and routines, conducting a reading survey of your students, etc.

LESSON PLANS: Teachers must continue to submit lesson plans weekly on the Genesis platform that reflect the

assignments students will be asked to complete daily. All assignments will be sent to students through Google Classroom.

SPECIAL EDUCATION: The school district will ensure that special education students will be provided equal access to

the same educational opportunities as the general student population during a school closure. All Inclusion, Resource and Self-Contained students will complete the assignments as requested from the teacher. Teachers must include accommodations and modifications that meet the needs of all students with disabilities as stated in their IEPs.

RELATED SERVICES: Speech, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Counseling will be provided virtually in accordance to the student's IEP. Students will be assessed for regression by their provider and make recommendations to the student’s case manager. The parent and Case Manager, once school re-opens will discuss the compensatory services and initiate a plan to provide them.

AUTISTIC PROGRAM: Students will utilize Rethink, where assignments are assigned to them at their level. In addition, parents will be provided an additional list of activities with resources for their child to complete.

SPEECH THERAPISTS: School therapists will work on the following tasks:

● Attend IEP meetings as required

● Complete evaluations in person as needed.

Page 27: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

26

● Ensure all SEMI’s are up to date

● Complete IEP’s as needed

● Provide virtual therapy sessions as indicated in the IEP.

TRANSITION TEACHER: The transition teacher will engage in the following tasks:

● Individually email classified students

● Parents/Guardians of applicable Seniors will be contacted regarding DVR services, share their DVR counselor’s contact information and set up potential meetings

● Continue to work with students and to maintain communication with teachers

CHILD STUDY TEAM: CST will conduct IEP meetings via conference call or other methods to the maximum extent possible. They will contact parents, set up a time for a virtual meeting, invite all required personnel, present the information, discuss the IEP and parent concerns and send an email to parents to send back with consent. In cases where a translator is needed appropriate personnel will be in attendance. Assessments will be conducted in person as we receive parental permission. All CST will collaborate with teachers, counselors, therapists and administrators on an ongoing basis to provide support for the students they manage.

BILINGUAL/ESL: ELL eligible students will continue to be scheduled in courses that provide the additional language

development services for which they are entitled. Testing will be conducted to ensure accurate course placement.

All Bilingual/ESL students will complete the assignments as requested from their teacher. Bilingual periods (ELA & Math)

should provide equal access to the same educational opportunities as the general student population during hybrid and

virtual learning. Lessons should be standards-based and appropriate resources utilized, either from the list below or

resources used within the department.

Teachers will communicate in the parent’s home language whenever possible. This includes asking staff members outside

of the ESL/Bilingual department for their assistance when calling home. Additional resources include providing parents and

students with links to tutorial videos and directions in multiple languages. School communications are emailed to parents

Page 28: KEARNY SCHOOL DISTRICT

27

in the language designated as their home language in Genesis. Required documents are professionally translated as

needed.

Teachers are encouraged to differentiate instruction based on the individual needs of the students. This may include

additional support/resources in the student’s home language as well as tailoring assignment requirements based on the

student’s language abilities. Students who qualify for both ESL/Bilingual services and Special Education services will

receive both services as outlined in the student’s IEP. Teachers are also available for meetings online or a phone call to

clarify assignments and address difficulties individual students may be experiencing with the assignment.

The district’s Technology Department works with all students, including ELLs, to ensure appropriate access to the

technology necessary to complete distance learning assignments.

Academic Support Instruction:

All K-5 Academic Support instruction will follow a push-in model. Lessons should be standards-based and appropriate

resources utilized, either from the list below or resources used within the department. All ASI staff should be linked to the

corresponding Google Classrooms of their students.

Technology Department: Technology support will be available during regular school hours via email. All questions should

be emailed to [email protected].

If you have questions or concerns and need guidance, please reach out to your Building Principal, the Curriculum

Department or the Special Services Department. We will continue to share resources as they are received and developed

● 1:38 - 2:38 may be used for PLC meetings and student office hours as scheduled by your supervisor. The recommendation is

2 days per week PLC and 2 days per week Office hours - TBD.

● Wednesday is a Virtual Learning day. The expectation for this day is NOT to give assignments and/or homework, it will be

designed to meet with each class for 32 minutes to review what was done on M/T and what you will be doing on TH/F.

Assessments may be administered with supervisory permission. Keep in mind, if everyone gave their assessments on Wed.,

students would be at a decided disadvantage.

Additional Information regarding the Hybrid School Day: ● Hybrid model requires all classes to be divided in half (Group A and Group B) to ensure smaller class size.

a. Group A attends school for in-person instruction on Thursday and Friday, and participates in flexible virtual instruction on Monday and Tuesday. All students meet in a structured virtual classroom on Wednesdays.

b. Group B participates in flexible virtual instruction on Thursday and Friday, and attends school for in-person instruction on Monday and Tuesday. All students meet in a structured virtual classroom on Wednesdays.

c. Middle School PLTW (Project Lead the Way) will only be available in the hybrid model. d. High School CTE and PLTW will only be available in hybrid model.

● Any student choosing to attend the hybrid model at their home school may request to switch to the virtual program at any time by emailing their home school building principal who will facilitate the change.

● In the hybrid schedule, remote students complete independent work while students in classroom receive instruction. ● The district’s virtual school will follow the same curriculum as each of our schools, but will not be affiliated with any par ticular

school.

● Students are assigned a virtual teacher who facilitates online instruction and assessment for students in elementary schools.

Middle and High school students are assigned a virtual teacher for each subject in which they are enrolled.

● Those teaching in the Virtual School will be required to follow the same hourly schedule for structured virtual learning and to participate in common planning activities via online planning meetings and professional development as noted in the district’s instructional plan.

● High School: Required academic classes will be given priority over elective classes. Some electives may not be available. High
