ST. CHARLES – Anotherbusiness has shut its doors onthe city’s east side in the samemonth that a project’s ground-breaking ceremony broughtpromise of new vitality.

TGI Fridays, 3875 E. MainSt., St. Charles, has closed, ac-cording to a sign taped to itsfront doors.

“Thanks for the goodtimes,” the sign states. “ThisFridays location has closed.”

The sign – which was upby lunchtime Sunday – doesnot indicate when the casualdining restaurant closed, butit directs visitors to patronizeits other locations. A list canbe found at www.fridays.com.

According to St. CharlesTownship records, the eat-ery was built in the East GateCommons subdivision in 2002.

KANEVILLE – Kris Conleywas vacationing in Washingtonstate in 1997 when her now-latehusband, Bruce, told her hebought the farm – and he meantit quite literally.

The nearly 10-acre propertyat Main Street and Daubermanroads in Kaneville Townshipwas theirs.

Conley said her husbandthought it was too beautiful tokeep to themselves.

“We have to be able to shareit,” she recalled him as saying.

They did. Over time, thefarmland would become theirhome as well as a venue forweddings and Conley Out-reach Community Servicesprograms, such as a children’sgrief camp.

But now, four years afterher husband died, Conley hasdecided to sell the property. Ata Farewell to the Farm eventSunday, she said he would un-derstand, as he knew each ofthe things he started had a lifes-pan.

“As much as I would love tokeep it going, I can’t,” Conleysaid. “I think it’s time.”

Carol Alfrey, the executivedirector of Conley Outreach,

said it is hard to let go of a placethat has such a special feel, butthe loss of the farm won’t meana loss in programming.

“The programs will go on,”she said.

“They will continue becauseI think people need them,” Con-ley said.

As the sun shone brightlySunday afternoon and Alfreyprepared a fire for s’mores,Conley greeted visitors to thefarm, thanking them for com-ing out.

Among them were Tom andMary Fink of Batavia, whose12-year-old son died 10 yearsago from cancer. Tom Fink saidthey have attended grief pro-grams at the farm, includinga candle lighting event held inDecember.

“It’s a meaningful ceremo-ny,” he said, noting attendeeswould then meet inside Con-ley’s house and talk.

As of Sunday, Conley said nopotential buyers have looked atthe property, which will host itslast wedding next weekend.

While giving a tour of theproperty, she shared some ofher husband’s ideas for it, suchas making the house into a re-treat for hospice patients.

“He touched so many lives,”she said.

BATAVIA – The multicol-ored wig Lauren Schmidt woreon Saturday added about threefeet to her 5-foot, 6-inch frame,but surprisingly, it did notweigh her down.

“It was more hot than any-thing,” said Schmidt, a GlenEllyn resident.

Schmidt walked a runwaywith Marcy Thomas of DeKalbas they wore designs from Au-rora artist Danielle Dobiesduring the third annual On-som’ bel fundraiser. The eventwas held Saturday at WaterStreet Studios, 160 S. Water St.,in downtown Batavia.

The first On-som’ bel washeld in 2012 at the studios, andthe event gets bigger everyyear, said Laura Spicer, eventchairwoman and Water StreetStudios board member. Theevent, which raises money forthe nonprofit Water Street Stu-dios and its programs, includeda gallery show, a silent and liveauction, a dance party with DJand, of course, a fashion show.

The fashion show featuredthe work of 10 artists worn by19 models under the theme “Av-enue + Passage.” They walkeda dramatically lit runway ina loading dock at the studioswhile the music of groups suchas Inner City and the Sex Pis-tols filled the space.

Chicago resident LisaGagne and her husband, Mat-thew, were two of the show’sroughly 200 attendees. Gagne’semployer, Robis Marketing, isone of the show’s sponsors, butshe said she had to pay her ownway to get in. The show is sopopular that all the company’spasses already were taken, shesaid.

“It was really unexpected,but very, very entertaining,”said Gagne, who also attendedlast year’s show. “Some of thethings they did were amazing.”

Among Gagne’s favorite

pieces were the two designsfrom Water Street Studios res-ident artist Patricia Davoustof Warrenville. The looks wereawarded Best of Show by eve-ning’s end.

Davoust’s models wereJared Protz of Aurora andone of her daughters, CelesteDavoust-Jenkins of Warren-ville, depicting cave paintingsand the influence of humanthroughout time. Davoust-Jen-kins said she had plenty ofbutterflies leading up to Satur-day’s show, her first as a mod-el, but Protz told her to lookstraight ahead on the catwalkand not break character.

It took four hours to get herrunway ready, three of whichwere spent just on her hair.Her locks were spraypainted agrayish silver and pipe clear-ers were placed inside of it so itwould stand upright and looklike a stalactite, which formsfrom calcium salts and hangs

like a icicle inside a cave.Davoust collaborated with

Stephen Wake, owner of FocasHair Salon in St. Charles, tocomplete the hairdo. She alsoworked with her two modelsand another one of her daugh-ters, Madeline Davoust, to com-plete the choreography for theshow.

Dobies told Schmidt andThomas to act extravagant fortheir runway choreography.The black tulle petticoats thetwo models wore took abouta week to make, but the largewigs Dobies created for themtook three months to construct.

Dobies had a sculpture inthe first on-som’ bel show in2012 and worked behind thescenes at the 2013 show. Shewas thrilled to once again bepart of the fundraiser.

“To see your work cometo fruition and see the modelswearing it is so exiciting,” Do-bies said.

The Saints (11-1-1) got onthe board first on a penaltykick by midfielder JordanMoore. The penalty kick wasset up by Saints’ midfield pres-sure, specifically Taylor Ortiz.The Saints’ pressure dominat-ed as the match unfolded.

“It’s a game of patience,”

East coach Paul Jennison said.“…The message was simple, ifwe are patient and we get one,we can get three or four.”

WEST CHICAGO – Withfans on their feet applauding,a new class of former athleticgreats went into the WheatonAcademy Hall of Fame in anuplifting halftime ceremonyduring Saturday’s footballgame against Riverside-Brook-field.

It was one of a few chanc-es the home fans got to cheeron the afternoon, as the War-riors were routed by River-side-Brookfield in a 45-21 de-feat, Wheaton Academy’s firstof the season.

The Warriors (4-1, 0-1 Met-ro Suburban Conference West)had outscored opponentsby a combined total of 164-7

throughout their first fourgames but had no answers inthe contest for senior Bulldogsrunning back Matt Chapp, whohad three touchdowns on theday.

After trailing, 28-14, at thehalf, the Warriors fumbled theensuing kickoff at their 10-yardline, leading to a Bulldog fieldgoal.

Junior quarterback DavidThrasher lead Wheaton Acad-emy with three touchdownspasses on the day, includingone in the final minute of thegame, but the offense wasone-dimensional from the on-set with the rushing game rou-tinely snuffed out.

Riverside-Brookfield coachBrendan Curtin said his teamcame into the game hoping to

force the Warriors to move theball through the air.

“That was our game plancoming in,” Curtin said.“There are always risks in-volved. Our secondary had alittle bit of a rough time earlyon. They were able to hit uson some comeback routes andover the top but I think that’sthe nature of our defense.

“We came in to the gamewith the mindset that we’regoing to want to come in andbe attacking, blitz the quarter-back and they were going toneed to beat us through the air.That was the plan going intoit.”

The Warriors struggledto execute in key situationsthroughout the game, includ-ing a fourth-and-2 at the Bull-

dogs’ 6-yard line, trailing 38-14early in the fourth quarter.

Wheaton Academy coachBrad Thornton didn’t pull anypunches when discussing histeam’s inability to counter theBulldogs’ big plays in the game.

“We got our butts kickedtoday,” Thornton said. “Theycame out and they punchedand at times I thought theywere ready to punch back butat the end of the day we justdidn’t execute. That’s reallywhat I’ve challenged our guyswith.”

“A lot of the stuff that hap-pened today was poor execu-tion on their part. Some missedblocking assignments, somemissed tackles, fumbled theball a couple times. Just a gen-eral lack of execution, so we’ve

got to learn from it.”Senior receiver Dillon Ole-

son had one of the lone bigplays for the Warriors on theday, hauling in a 54-yard touch-down from Thrasher to cut thelead to 14-7 late in the secondquarter.

Oleson said he had workedon the play after practiceduring the week but said histeam needs to work harderto perform better next weekagainst Glenbard South.

“We have to forget about [to-day] first and foremost,” Ole-son said. “When we play Glen-bard South next week, whenwe get hit in the mouth likewe’re gonna, like we did thisweek, we have to come backand punch them back and keepmoving forward.”

When you have twounbalanced fits

Plato said, “He who does notdesire power is fit to hold it.”

This week, let’s continue ourlook at deals with two suit fits.

When you have two unbal-anced fits, say 5-3 and 6-2, whichshould you choose?

The guideline is: When allor most of the tricks must comefrom the two long suits, selectthe less evenly divided. Thismeans that 6-2 will be betterthan 5-3. (This is also one timewhen a 5-3 fit will be better thana 4-4.) That rule is doubly truewhen the breaks are bad or youhave relatively weak hands.

In today’s deal, North-Southwill be contemplating a sacrificeover four hearts, which wouldmake easily, West taking at leastthree spades, five hearts and twodiamonds. Should North-Southpick five clubs or five diamonds?

South’s first-round call wouldcause debate. Many expertswould advocate two no-trump,showing at least 5-5 in the unbidsuits. But some would prefer twodiamonds, bidding the longersuit first and planning to bidclubs next time (at the five-levelif necessary) to describe the 6-5.

This second plan worksbetter here, because if Southintervenes with two no-trump,North will prefer five clubs tofive diamonds. Note, though,that after two rounds of hearts,declarer is in big trouble. Thedefenders will keep playing onhearts, and five clubs doubledwill go down four.

In five diamonds doubled,though, West must lead an un-likely club at trick one to get thecontract down three.
