ELBURN – Four Republicangubernatorial candidates – DanRutherford, Bill Brady, Kirk Dil-lard and Bruce Rauner – high-lighted their platforms for the2014 state governor race whenthey stopped in Elburn on Sun-day evening.

The candidates were amongmany Republicans who attendedthe annual Western Kane CountyRepublican Organization fund-raiser at Lions Park. DennisRyan, chairman of the organiza-tion, said funds raised Sundaywould go toward supporting theIllinois Republican party as awhole, rather than individualcandidates.

Among the gubernatorialcandidates’ priorities in the up-coming election season are jobcreation and solving the pensioncrisis.

Rutherford, the Illinois StateTreasurer, said Sunday his plat-form is simple.

“My priority is jobs, jobs, jobs,” he said. “Everything elsewe do is secondary today otherthan jobs.”

He said his plan for bolsteringjob creation is to help business

owners cut through the “bureau-cracy of state government.”

As far as solving the state’snearly $100 billion in unfundedpension liabilities, Rutherfordsaid pension reforms need to bedone “fairly and substantively.”

Other candidates, includingDillard, a state senator, alsoweighed in on pension reform. He said if he were governor, thelegislature would not be able todo anything until they found asolution to the state’s unfundedpensions.

“I voted for [House Speak-er Michael Madigan’s] bill,” hesaid. “While it’s not perfect, itworks.”

Madigan’s proposal would re-duce the state’s pension costs byabout $187 billion over 30 years, according to published reports.

Brady, also a state senator, ran four years ago on the Re-publican ticket against Gov. PatQuinn. He said he considers him-self a fiscal conservative who hasa track record of opposing tax in-creases.

He said his goals if elected in-clude cutting government spend-ing, pension reform, paying downthe state’s bills, creating jobs andimplementing term limits.

Brady said one facet of pen-

sion reform should includere-assessing cost-of-living wageincreases to more accuratelyreflect market conditions. Oncepension reform is in place, hesaid, the state will be in more via-ble financial position, which willhelp create jobs.

“Once we merchandize thestate properly, we can start beingproactive in selling all that wehave,” he said.

Rauner said he’s running inhis first political race because“our state is in terrible shape.”He said the state struggles withhigh unemployment, school de-terioration, high taxes and busi-nesses heading to other states.

“Career politicians failed atfixing the problem and unionbosses are running Springfieldfor their own benefit,” he said.“I’m an independent person. Ijust want to get things done.”

His goals if elected include im-proving the state’s business cli-mate and creating jobs; makinggovernment more transparentand efficient; making sure educa-tion is a top priority; and imple-menting term limits.

Rauner said his businessbackground as a venture capi-talist will help run governmentmore like a business.

NORTH AURORA – It tookabout a year, but Jason Ri-nella restored his 1966 Plym-outh Fury to look as close toan original Chicago police caras possible, right down to theoriginal 1966 city sticker onthe windshield.

Rinella, a Glendale Heightspolice officer on disabilityleave, displayed the blue andwhite car alongside more thana dozen other older police carsduring the 16th annual Chi-cagoland Emergency Vehi-cle Show on Saturday duringNorth Aurora Days.

The show featured about100 emergency and police ve-hicles, said Dave Weaver, whoorganizes the show. He said

“We restore all the cars as

Rinella rattled off thenames of about a dozen friendswho had cars on display Sat-urday. He said they all ownand restore their own policecars independently, but peri-odically get together to displaythem at shows. He said manyof them are “car people” to be-gin with, but also have a back-ground in law enforcement.

“It’s just a fun hobby,” saidLuke Hartigan, a retired chiefof staff for the Illinois Depart-ment of Corrections. He hadhis restored 1973 Dodge Polaraon display near Rinella’s.

Families stopped to takepictures and look at all typesof cars, including a 1959 In-ternational firetruck from theRib Lake Fire Department anda 1949 American LaFrancefiretruck from the Hillside

Fire Department.The show also featured

Matt Daly watches his tee shot Saturday on the 4th hole during the St. Charles Men’s Golf Tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course.

Woods-Daly duel highlights quarterfinalsBy KEVIN SHEPKE

[email protected]

ST. CHARLES – In years past, ifyou saw the two names “Woods” and“Daly” at the top of a golf tournamentleaderboard, it was a heated battle onthe PGA Tour.

But this is a local rivalry, notablyat the St. Charles Men’s Golf Tourna-ment, between defending championMatt Daly and 2011 winner Jon Woods.

In match play Sunday as part of thequarterfinals at Pottawatomie GolfCourse, Daly got the better of Woods– just barely – and advanced to nextweekend’s semifinal round with a 1-upvictory in 20 holes over his friend.

“That was the closest match I’veever played in my life, and I have theutmost respect for Jon,” Daly said. “He

is grinder and we both grinded it out.”Facing elimination and the oppor-

tunity to defend his title in next week’sround, Daly was down two holes withtwo to play, but he found his niche justin time to pull out the win.

“I was in panic mode,” Daly said.“But I made an amazing bunker shoton the second hole … what can I say,I’m freaking beat and I’ve never gone20 holes.”

Daly started his round rather rou-tinely, but things started to swing tothe dark side on the back nine and his‘B’ game started to creep up.

“I just could not find the fairways,”he said. “I was having trouble evenwith four irons and five irons to findthe fairways and just couldn’t do it andI had to scramble.”

It wasn’t until the final two holes,

Nos. 17 and 18, when Daly officiallymade his comeback to force the extramatch play.

“I won 18 and that got it back allsquare,” Daly said. “I hit a six iron outof the trees from about 150 [yards] androde it. He made six and I made fiveand kept it going on to the next hole. Itwas just amazing.”

Weather didn’t play much of a fac-tor in Daly’s game as he was treatedwith sunshine, mid-70s temperaturesand very little wind, but he did have alittle trouble reading the greens.

“The brightness caused that a littlebut I couldn’t ask for anything betterthan this,” Daly said. “If this is theworst thing that happened to me, I’mvery happy with that.”

In other championship matchplay, David Lanciotti will face Daly

in the semifinals as he defeated Bri-

an Charles, 2 up, while Chris Jones

moved on with a 4-and-3 victory over

St. Charles East product Richard Gei-

er. The final quarterfinal of the day in-

volved another East graduate in Sean

Lenchner, who lost a close 2-and-1 deci-

sion to Chris Thomas.

Daly, who hopes that the worst is be-

hind him now, hopes to take the tour-

nament championship and is confident

he can do so.

“I’m going to win the show,” Daly

said. “But I’m not going to think that

far ahead. I’m thinking first tee shot,

first hole [next week]. I need to defend

this [title] so I can’t get too far ahead

of myself. It’s got to come one shot

at a time and that’s going to be my

approach.”

STCMen’s match playround starts off fast

By KEVIN [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – Advanc-ing past the championshipflight match-play opener of theSt. Charles Men’s Golf Tour-nament appeared on BrianCharles’ Saturday agenda.

The perennial tournamentcontender simply checked itoff the list sooner than he ex-pected.

Charles’ 7-and-6 victoryagainst Mike Heithoff earnedhim a second-round berthSunday at Pottawatomie GolfCourse. It also lengthened hisSaturday afternoon.

“Hook up with the fam-ily. Converge on the pool,”Charles said. “They were ex-pecting a much later arrivalhome today. But we’ll see. Ineed a nap. I’ve got some workto do.”

Defending champion andtop seed Matt Daly also struckquickly and early, topping El-iot Kaufman, 9 and 7. His frontnine included three successivebirdies on Nos. 5 through 7.

“They were long, undulat-ing putts, so it kind of caughthim off-guard and I kind oftook command of the matchfrom there,” Daly said.

His driver, with a new, lighter shaft, helped Daly stayin position to comfortablyreach greens. He uncorked a320-yard tee shot on No. 9 anddrove the second green at thebeginning of his second loopthrough the nine-hole course.

The trip didn’t extendmuch beyond that.

Most other matches in thechampionship flight weremore-tightly contested, name-ly Jon Woods’ 1-up victoryagainst 2012 runner-up Gar-rett Patten in a meeting to de-termine who would face Dalyon Sunday.

Woods, the event’s 2011champion, won with a two-putt par on 18. Patten’s parputt from the fringe lipped out.

“It was the hardest lip-outI’ve ever seen,” said RichardGeier, who moved over towatch the match after defeat-ing fellow St. Charles Eastalumnus Nick Maze, 3-up.“The ball went literally in the

hole and came up.”Woods trailed by one hole

with two to play but closedwith two pars. He creditedhis calmness and strategy to“keep everything in front ofme” as he opposed Patten, whoWoods concedes is consistent-ly longer off the tee.

“It was a fantastic finishwith a lot of lead changes, which was pretty cool,” Woodssaid. “More than anything, Iwas happy that I stuck in thereand held it together.”

The day began with a pairof upsets in the lower flights,as No. 16 Ed Murzinski defeat-ed top-seeded Rod Stablein, 3and 1, in a B-flight opener. Ashort while later, the coursebuzzed with news of another16-over-1 triumph, with SteveMitchell turning the trick inC-flight with a 2-and-1 victoryagainst Jim Sonin.

Second-round tee times be-gan at 7 a.m. Sunday, and the

tournament will maintain an

earlier flavor from here on

out.

No golfer dare risk looking

ahead to the date just yet, but

each flight final is scheduled

for bright and early Aug. 11,

the final day of the third week-

end of tournament play.

That’s 7 a.m. (D), 7:10

(C), 7:20 (B), 7:30 (A) and 7:40

(championship).

“It’s better [in the morn-

ing]. It’s better. It’s more fun,”

said first-time participant

Sean Lenchner, a first-round

championship flight winner

and East product who plays

at Elmhurst College. “You get

the true – I don’t know. It’s

just fun. I like playing early.

The hard part is just getting

up early.”

That shouldn’t be the case

this time around. The biggest

obstacle might just be manag-

ing the anticipation.

WednesdayA look at the Geneva connection in Grand Valley State’s foot-

ball program.Michael Ratay is hoping to see time at running back this sea-

son while former NIU defensive lineman Frank Boenzi is new toGrand Valley’s program.

ThursdayCoverage of the Cougars’ game Wednesday against the Burl-

ington Bees at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The Cougars face long odds but are hoping to make a late push

for contention for a second-half Midwest League playoff spot.

FridayWe preview the final weekend of the St. Charles Men’s Golf

Tournament. The semifinal round at Pottawatomie Golf Course will be

Saturday and the championship round of the match-play eventwill be Sunday.

Daughter wants to shieldkids from toxic grandma

Dear Abby: My motherand I were close growingup. However, when I was incollege she abandoned thefamily (my siblings were inhigh school and elementaryschool) for her much young-er boyfriend.

Since then, our rela-tionship has been strained, particularly since Ilearned she used to tellher then-husband she wasvisiting me when she wascarrying on her affair. Afterthat, I learned about addi-tional lies she had told methroughout my childhood.

I’m married now andhave two young children.Until a year ago we lived inthe same city. Mom nevercame around much becauseshe was preoccupied withfinding new boyfriends tosupport her. She has sincemoved out of state andstalks me on Facebook, ha-rassing me to get Skype soshe can talk to my children.

My mother has neverapologized for her actionsto anyone and thinks weshould just “get over it.”Because so much has comeout about her, I want to pro-tect my children from beinghurt by her the way I was.

I can’t tell her outrightthat I don’t want much to dowith her for fear it will sendher into an “episode,” and Idon’t want my kids caughtin the crossfire. If I try tosugar-coat what needs to besaid, she won’t get it. Whatshould I do? – FrustratedDaughter

Dear Daughter: Frankly, you’ll save yourself a lot ofgrief if you just tell yourmother you’re not gettingSkype and the reason why,and let her have her “epi-sode.” As a parent, you haveevery right to insulate yourchildren from anyone youfeel might be a negative in-fluence – and that includestheir grandmother.

Dear Abby: I have beendating my boyfriend formore than a year and weare considering marriage. Iam 23 and have never beendissatisfied with the way Ilook.

The other day he told

my friend that when we getmarried and become finan-cially stable, he would payfor a boob job for me. I’moffended, mostly becauseI don’t want one and don’tthink I need one. Do youthink this speaks to hischaracter (or lack there-of)? – Not Going Under InLouisiana

Dear Not Going Under:No, I think it speaks to thedegree he assumes he cancontrol or make choicesfor you. That he would saysomething like that to oneof your friends withouthaving discussed it withyou is rather disconcerting.I don’t blame you for beingoffended.

Dear Abby: I operate asmall Internet radio stationout of my house in Texas.I play music 24/7, excepton Saturday nights when Iusually do a live talk show.A topic I raise every yearcoincides with my birthday.I announce to all who arelistening that I have desig-nated this day as Mind YourOwn Business Day.

On this day, my listenersare reminded that if theydisapprove of someone’schoice of mate, clothing, religion, favorite music, pets – and anything elsethat may be personal andnobody’s business – to keepit to themselves.

Would you be willing tomention this in your col-umn and help me spread theword that while everyonehas a right to an opinion,it doesn’t mean everyoneshould be forced to listento it? Thanks in advance. –Jim In Texas

Keep equal lengthwith the dummy

BRIDGE by Phillip Alder

Josh Billings, whose realname was Henry Wheeler Shaw, said, “As a general rule, if youwant to get at the truth, hear bothsides and believe neither.”

Then what do you do? Takehalf of each? Weird!

Bridge is full of “truisms,” butthere always seem to be excep-tions to these adages. However, this deal features one with aremarkable record of reliability. What is it?

South is in three no-trump.West leads the diamond king. What should happen, assumingWest keeps plugging away atdiamonds?

North’s takeout double wasvery light. South’s three no-trump promised 13-15 points withdiamonds held and, in principle, denied a four-card major; it was arealistic choice.

After South ducked the firsttwo rounds of diamonds, Westcould have shifted to clubs todefeat the contract. But that washardly obvious. It was normal tocontinue with the diamond four, his lowest being a suit-preferencesignal for clubs. After declar-er discarded a club from thedummy, what should East havethrown?

At the table, East pitched aheart. Now South ran the heart10 and cashed her four heartwinners. What should East havethrown this time?

East broke a key rule for a sec-ond time when she discarded aspade. That allowed South to takefour spade tricks and nine in all.

East forgot to keep equallength with the dummy. Whilethe board retained four cards ineach major, East had to do thesame, discarding clubs. Thenthree no-trump would havefailed.
