August, 2017 MAIN # 623-376-4300 ATTENDANCE # 623-376-4390 Mark Anderson, Principal Wendy Doucet, Assistant Principal Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! I know that this year will be especially good for the students at Highland Lakes. The beginning of the school year is always an exciEng Eme. Kindergarten students and their parents are anxious about the new adventure that they are about to begin, and returning students are wondering about what changes the new school year will bring for them. Teachers are planning exciEng lessons for their students and are looking forward to helping your child succeed. We are working very hard to make certain that our students are developing strong academic, social, and emoEonal skills. There is a new energy this year that seems to be contagious. Along with the new energy, we have also added the following staff members to the Highland Lakes School family: Katie Kessler - Kindergarten Brandy Ozment - 3rd Grade Carmen Galavix - Renaissance Elementary Spanish Alison Krystek - Elementary Art Janeen Lantry - 7/8 Science Tina Smith - 7/8 Math Each teacher brings their own energy and experEse to our campus and I truly believe they are all excellent addiEons to our staff. The new teachers in partnership with our returning staff will conEnue to offer your children the high quality of academics you have grown to expect from the HL’s educaEonal community. We are looking forward to an amazing 2017-2018 school Year! Mark Anderson Principal, Highland Lakes School

This summer Mr. Currier had the opportunity to spend 5 weeks working at ASU as a RET (Research Experience for Teachers), with QESST (Quantum Energy and Sustainable Solar Technologies). QESST is an Engineering Research Center, funded partially by the National Science Foundation.

The RET program immersed teachers in an authentic photovoltaic learning experience with the aim to propagate that learning to their students and wider community. Teachers spent five weeks collaborating with professional engineering researchers, engineering graduate and undergraduate students as well as high school students. The collaboration allowed teachers to participate in learning the fundamentals of PV engineering, contribute to a novel engineering research project, and produce meaningful PV curriculum for their own students. QESST designed the program’s structure to support teachers in all three interconnected activities.

Mr. Currier presented his research and curriculum with three of his peers at an international solar workshop in Breckenridge, Colorado right before he had to report back to school. He’s planning to share his newly acquired passion for sustainable energy into his classroom through the lessons he’s continuing to develop. His collaboration with QESST will continue throughout the school year.

Mr Currier, 4th Grade Teacher, Rocked the Summer Solar Program at ASU

Shout out to HLS’s Aiden Bowers on his published story and his encouraging teachers. Aiden is one of our Renaissance Music Academy Students

Meet & Greet

Who is Nate and why does he get a reserved parking spot?

Meet Nate. Nate is in the 4th Grade and is part of our Highland Lakes Family. He has an infectious laugh. And loves when students and adults greet him to say ‘hello’. He loves music, playing on his iPad and being with his Mom, Dad, and Sister. Just like the rest of us, he has good days and bad days. Unlike the rest of us, he can’t hop out of the car, wave “bye” and run into school. Every day, Nate’s Mom or Dad lift him in and out of his chair, carry him to the car, buckle him in, and load up his chair. This takes extra time and presents safety concerns in the pickup line. So, because Highland Lakes takes care of our family, we created a reserved spot for Nate. We thought it was a good idea, and we hope you agree!

Letters will be sent home with elementary students who have a classmate with food allergies explaining the specific food that is a concern. Signs indicating the foods that are not allowed in a classroom will be posted on the respective classroom doors.

Allergies to peanuts and other nuts and nut products are the most worrisome. Steps have been taken to provide all students with food allergies with a safe environment including a table in the cafeteria that is designated as “nut-restricted.” This table will be cleaned after each lunch with a solution and sponge designated for this table only. Any child without nuts or nut products can sit at this table. If your child sits at this table with one of these products, he/she will be asked to move to another table. If you have a child who has a food allergy and you want to ensure that your child sits at a restricted table, please contact the nurse.

Currently we have a total of 80 students with some type of food allergy. Elementary students are the most likely to bring a snack to eat in the classroom, however, we are also concerned about the many 7th and 8th graders with food allergies. An overall awareness is in order.

We trust that you understand how deeply important it is to respect and adhere to these guidelines. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me, Karen Hurst, RN, at 623-376-4310.
