STACK: WALKABLE PATH/BUTTERFLY GARDEN DESIGN 10Fall 2013

Stacking can be described as an arrangement, or a number of things, in a pile, & is typically defined as neat one. In this assignment, we were to visit Oleta River State Park & analyze what we observed in the park and translate that into a walkway & pavilion, which in my case, had to relate to the word stack. The process began by creating abstract models that related to the word stack. To the right, the first model describes that stacking means to me. I went along with that and created interlocking & movable stacking pieces out of plaster. I quickly noticed that jigs can be used to alternate the stack thus changing the angle. This process led to us later testing out a material called “woodcrete” which is basically concrete with wood chips into it. This material is very efficient and weighs less than concrete, although it can be tricky to get the right consistency. The far right shows the finished product stack tower out of woodcrete and jigs.

These abstract montages to the right show what we observed in the landscape of the park. It helped us get more in touch with textures and the elements. I revisited Oleta River State Park to further analyze my observation points on where my future walkway design will be located. The site plan below shows my walkable path inspired by the word stack. I began to analyze how nature be-haves in a stacking manner. Leaves, branches, and an assortment of other natural elements can be viewed as entities that stack within themselves. Taking this into consideration, I managed to create a walkway that reads in a horizontal stack and blends withinit’s surroundings. I created a trapezoidal shape that symbolized the way tree roots behave and maneuver through the landscape. My walkway relates to this concept by having one main path followed by sprawling smaller paths dissipating into the landscape the way a tree has its anchor roots followed by its feeder roots.

STACK WALKABLE PATH + BUTTERFLY GARDEN

S tacking can be described as an arrange (a number of things) in a pile, typically a neat one. In this assignment, we wereto visit Oleta River State Park and analyze what we saw inthe park in order to create a walkway, which in my case, hadto relate to the word stack. Before everything, we took pictures and created a photomontage followed by a model of the montage which helped us see the landscape in a more detailed and abstract way. Our assignment was to pick two observation points, which we would examine andview in detail. Once given the assigment, I revisited Oleta RiverState Park to further analyze the observation points and the way I would integrate nature and my future walkway design. Through the observation of my viewpoints, I began to analyzehow nature behaves in a stacking manner. After creating the walkable path and experience throughout that path, we had to then figure out how to incorporate a pavilion for park visitors to sit and enjoy the landscape. Looking back at page 5, you can see that I decided to situate the pavilion in the center of my walkway. It is also slightly tilted because of the fact that this pavilion is composed of modular elements, just as the walkway, and incorporates built-in planters. These planters need sunlight and this was the best angle to get enough sunlight for these plants. Not only is the pavilion good for plants and seating areas, but for wildlife as well, including but-terflies. Oleta River State Park is home to hundreds of rare butterfly species.

By using only three modular shapes, I created different stacking systems that can be used to make up the pavilion. Not only is the pavilion composed of modular pieces, but I went back to my initial studies on stacking and incorporated jigs into these modules (square pieces supporting modules).

EXPANSION: FIU SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE DOWNTOWN IBS/COMPREHENSIVE STUDIOSummer 2013

Site located in Downtown Miami. This project was about expanding theFlorida International University School of Architecture into the urban environment of Downtown Miami. The expansion had to be appealing to the public, provide views from the classrooms as well as comply with security standards. My concept was to engage the inhabitants inside the building into the city by maximizing views and having the feel of the urban environment. My design is composed of four floors, the main floor entry is pushed back in order to bring people in and form col-lection spaces where students can gather. The classrooms all face the city, enabling students to get a clear view of the city.
