Carter contacted Chehaw River Woodworks in Mt. Pleasant based on a recommendation from her interior designer. Chehaw is a family owned business that began in the early 1990’s by the Carter family. While there is no family relation between Jeanie Carter and the Carters who opened Chehaw, it is an interesting coincidence. “I was impressed immediately with Chehaw and the employees that work there,” states Jeanie. “Not only do they do outstanding work, they also saved me money! It's not often you find a company willing to save you money. I fully planned on having the chest completely refinished after they repaired the area damaged, but after they polished it up, it didn’t even need refinishing!” exclaims Jeanie. Vernon Carter and his employees love to help customers just like Jeanie. “She came in with a chest that had been passed on to her from her grandmother. Her dog had chewed a piece of the base panel off. Nothing makes me happier than to see someone bring in a piece (of furniture) that has a story!” says Vernon. Vernon and his team are experts at what they do, and they do a lot. Their expertise ranges from repairing, refinishing, or simply polishing just about any piece of furniture (new or old)… to their newest addition to the business, brass refinishing. “We can polish your silver…because we know many people do not like to do it them- selves, so we offer that service,” notes Vernon with a smile. Vernon is thankful for the business relation- ships he’s formed on Daniel Island. Not only are there many customers like Jeanie Carter who brings in family pieces to have repaired, Vernon also has done extensive work at the Church of the Holy Cross on Daniel Island. Pastor John Burwell is proud of the work that Chehaw has done in the church over the years including making and installing the pulpit and altar rail. But most significantly is the work they did on the pews. The pews, having been given to the church by a closed Presbyterian church, were in need of a makeover. “Chehaw totally transformed the pews by adding length to the sides of the pews, changing the book racks on the backs, adding cross carv- ings in the sides, adding kneelers, and darken- ing them. The results were stunning!” states Pastor Burwell. One thing is for sure, the employees at Chehaw love helping people and bringing family heirlooms back to life. The atmosphere in the shop is calm and laid back. While each employee is focused on their particular project, there is a peace about the space that you often find in family settings. “We ARE like a family!” says Ginger Bergstrom, General Manager & Marketing for Chehaw.
