ree eras, three women, three fates
Set in the Silesian town of Gleiwitz, the stories of Martha, Maria, and Mag-da trace the history of this border region: following the Germans, Poles, and Czechs, Christians and Jews, who loved and hated each other, were expelled and whose paths eventually crossed again. Dörthe Binkert masterfully spans an arc running from the 1920s to the late 1960s. With much intuition and even more sensitivity, she has craft ed a portrait of a time and a region in which joy and suff ering were never more than a breath apart.
DÖRTHE BINKERT born in

Life after Forty
Chaperoned (Vacation with Dad)Actually it was meant to be a relaxing working holiday: Christine (45) and Dorothea (40) were going to spend a few days on a Northsea island, helping a friend renovate her pub. But then Christine is compelled by her mother to take her father along. And they’ve barely set foot on the island when Heinz (73) assumes command of the building site. Of course, things can only go from bad to worse...
Don’t tell Dad“We’ll be able to do it with our hands tied behind our backs!” It’s just as well that Ines isn’t easily daunted, because if it weren’t for her little sister, Christine would be feeling pretty queasy. Her friend Marleen has begged her to take over the running of her little guesthouse on the North Sea island for a few days – a job Christine doesn’t know the fi rst thing about. In the guesthouse, the sisters very quickly fi nd themselves out of their depth. And when their Dad also shows up as self-appointed knight in shining armour, the chaos is complete...

Resplendent with glamour but overcast by many a shadow, the story of the Salz family centres on Leipzig’s up-market Fürstenhof hotel. Salz Sr. buys it in 1914, but his actress daughter Lola refuses to set foot in it for many years—not during the Second World War, nor later when the hotel has become GDR state property and Lola is living in Mu-nich with her frail daughter Aveline. It is not until 1989, aft er her son Kurt has restored the Fürstenhof to family ownership, that Lola steps in to preside not only over the hotel but also the fortunes of a family worn down by the relentless winds of change.

The Immortal Family Salz
Home Made in IndiaIndians, Germans, and an author seeking to answer the question: What is home? Since his marriage to Indian native Saskya, Christopher Kloeble is a notarized “Person of Indian Heritage.” In this insightful, nuanced, amusing book, he strives to convey what it feels like to be suspend-ed between two cultures. Of course, cliches and precon-ceptions abound here as well as there - Indians enjoy chiding Germans for their impatience and dogmatism, while Germans frequently have very exotic stereotypes about life in India.
More often than not all very fastFor years, Albert has been visiting Fred during the hol-idays and at weekends, but they’ve never really grown close. Albert only ever called Fred Fred, never Father. Fred is a child trapped in the body of an old man, he spends his time reading encyclopaedias, waves at green cars and guards his prize possession jealously. Albert is 22, grew up in a children’s home and never knew his mother. Some-how he senses that Fred is the only one who can help him fi nd out more about his background. But Fred has only fi ve months left to live...

e Story of a Passionate Woman
“She was as complicated as a puzzle of several thousand parts, and I had to fi nd these parts and put them together,” says Angelika Schrobsdorff about her mother. Th e parts she uses are letters, photo albums, friends’ memories and the life they later led together. Everything started out well for the wealthy Jewish family in Berlin at the begin-ning of the century. Else Kirschner, with sparkling charm, dark curls and shiny eyes, loved her parents, who were always full of care for her, and she loved life, which blessed her with many years of prosperity fi lled with shows and concerts, holidays in a house at a lake and great passions. Th e Nazis put an end to all that. Else, who has in the meantime married the Prussian squire Erich Schrobsdorff , fl ees to Bulgaria with her two daughters. Else Schrobsdorff ’s life resembles a dance atop a volcano, with the dancers slowly gliding into the violent center. Full of passion and admiration but also scepticism, Angelika Schrobsdorff tells us of the two lives of her mother.
ANGELIKA SCHROBSDORFF,
was born in Freiburg in 1927.
In 1939 she had to emigrate
from Berlin to Sofi a with her
Jewish mother; her grand-par-
ents were killed in Theresien-
stadt. She returned to Germa-
ny in 1947 and wrote several
novels, of which “You are not
like other mothers” was the
most successful. Angelika
Schrobsdorff died in July 2016
at the age of 88 in Berlin.

e Middle Eastern politics of the Brandt era and their consequences
Even today, Willy Brandt’s winning of the Nobel Peace Prize and the aura at-tached to his Ostpolitik cast a long shadow. His kneeling in Warsaw is legend-ary. However, the West German to the Middle East approach was less success-ful. Th e federal government at the time made major mistakes and took great risks. Th is book presents a history of this period based on documents that have only recently become accessible.
Th e main events focused on include among other things the murder of the Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympic Games and Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir’s eff orts to win Willy Brandt over for peace mediation eff orts. Aided by established experts, Wolff sohn presents an analysis of the years 1972 and 1973.

Better con ict in the interest of better togetherness
Fighting is interesting. Fighting makes you more clever. Fighting is essential - for both societies and individuals, professionally and personally. A good fi ght forces us to organise arguments and consider points to our opponents. In a pe-riod shaped by refugee crises, Brexit, and Trump, we desperately need to be able to argue well. Instead, we end up screaming at each other, insulting each other, or trying to drown each other out, or we take the soft approach and scatter little hearts, likes, and smileys.
Meredith Haaf argues for developing a better argument culture and poses the following questions. What happens to a democracy when it loses its ability to debate? Why have we lost faith in our ability to argue a particular position? What does a good fi ght look like, and how can we re-learn how to engage in it?
Born in 1983, MEREDITH
HAAF is a journalist and au-
thor. She studied History and
Philosophy and has published
articles for the FAZ, taz and
Spiegel Online. Since 2017,
she is working as editor and
contributor for SZ Familie and

DER ULTIMATIVE RATGEBER!
Many of our decisions have no major infl uence on our lives, while others are a matter of do or die. And some of them are so insane in retrospect that we can hardly believe we took them. A single good or bad decision can change the course of our lives forever. But what infl uences our decisions? Identifying the classical errors in reasoning and the dilemmas we fi nd ourselves in, Jochen Mai shows us how we can improve our decision-making skills.

Contentment is a pretty reliable emotion. It may be less thrilling than the euphoria of happiness, but it has the advantage of being a great deal more stable and enduring. Rooted in a basically positive mindset – a fundamentally life-affi rming attitude – contentment is governed more by the mind than the heart; it is the result of cognitive pro-cesses. Th is gives it an unbeatable edge: we can infl uence our sense of contentment far more than the inherently transient feeling of happiness. What’s more, contentment is a wellspring of creativity – and it is a strategy we can learn. Th e central question is: what really matters to ME?
Contentment
ResilienceStress, burnout and depression are the affl ictions of our time. Many of us seem unable to handle the ever-increas-ing speed and complexity of life. What we need more than ever is a coping strategy – an inner strength we can rely on in times of crisis. Resilience: that’s what psychologists call the mysterious force that keeps us from falling apart and brings us back from the brink in the wake of adversity. Christina Berndt explains what it is that makes us strong and reveals the secrets of harnessing the power of resil-ience, off ering strategies to help steer our way through the jungle of everyday life.

Th is book brought Konrad Lorenz worldwide recognition and is a delightful treasury of observations and insights into the lives of all sorts of creatures, from jackdaws and water-shrews to dogs, cats and even wolves. Man meets DogHow, why and when did man meet dog and cat? How much are they in fact guided by instinct, and what sort of intelligence have they? What is the nature of their aff ec-tion or attachment to the human race? Professor Lorenz says that some dogs are descended from wolves and some from jackals, with strinkingly diff erent results in canine personality. Th ese diff erences he explains in a book full of entertaining stories and refl ections.
On AggressionOn Agression has had signifi cant impact on the social as well as the biological sciences and is now a classic point of reference for investigations of man’s behavioral patterns. Written by a Nobel Prize winner and one of the most distinguished pioneers in the fi eld of animal behavior, the book presents extraordinary fi ndings on the mechanism of aggression and the various means by which animals control destructive drives in the interest of the species.

A worldwide ban on wars went into eff ect with the establishment of the UN. Military intervention is only permitted in two excep-tions (self-defense or by mandate of the UN Security Council). Homer listed many of the Trojans’ allies by name, yet antiquity studies is scarcely interested in these peoples. Only a few scholars were convinced that on the east side of the Aegean Sea there was a whole culture that has been thus far overlooked. Because of these scholars we now know that the peoples of Western Asia Minor had their own language and script: Luwian. Troy was one of the primary sites of Luwian culture. Did the Luwians have their own empire? Were they a hitherto unknown world power? Th is book recounts not only the history of the Luwians but also the story of the scholarship around these ancient Anatolian peoples, which is almost as gripping.

Christoph Staerkle’s stagecraft ranks among the most impressive achievements of today’s pantomime artists. “Even without words, Staerkle speaks volumes,” a newspaper once opined. And it is true. In his “mimic cabarets,” he characterizes - with precise stylization, sensitive caricature and biting parody - fi gures from everyday life, their expressions and gestures. Th is is a unique, anecdotal artist autobiography by the great Swiss pantomime Christoph Staerkle, following his artistic path from street performance to international theater.

Saint-Exupéry took a diff erent route than Walt Disney: He tamed his melan-cholic urges instead of dispelling them; he wrote in depth about fear and friendship, about love and death. And to the present day his volumes Southern Mail, Wind, Sand and Stars, Flight to Arras and of course e Little Prince have inspired millions of readers. But what type of man was Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who fell from the heavens so suddenly on July 31, 1944? Joseph Hanimann has written the most comprehensive literary biography available on the life and works of this dreamy adventurer and proves him to have been a stalwart humanist of a very diff erent nature.

Today’s children and teens are treated like de-fi cient individuals. In this context, childhood becomes an extended grueling and confl ict-ual battle with the ultimate goal of producing inconspicuous, professionally successful members of society. However, this comes at a steep price. Childhood is denied, while teens are disem-powered. Th e result is a kind of benevolent dictatorship, which naturally supervises our children’s happiness with the Little Nanny location app. Many players are involved with this: parents, daycare centers and schools, the elderly, the industrial complex - because they all know what is best for our children. Right?

Anyone who is suff ering or in the midst of dying will oft en seek spiritual support and consolation. Spiritual Care can off er help, assists in acknowledging boundaries, and what support can look like in borderline situations. On a hot summer weekend the old and critically ill patriarch Joseph invites his family to his villa on the Baltic coast. Th e old and extremely rich man with a colorful past accepts death as what it is. However, before he goes, he is unyielding in his desire to see his entire family one last time. Th e relatives haven’t been on speaking terms for years, but they all decide to come in the interest of their potentially approaching inheritance.Predictably the events escalate until, in the truest sense of the world, everything explodes.

“How was your day?” Th e question is easy to answer, since when we’re awake, we are aware of what’s going on around us. “How did you sleep?” Th is question is trickier. In this book, Roenneberg focuses on sleep in all of its aspects, ranging from day-to-day living to questions related to evolution. Furthermore, this study doesn’t merely concentrate on sleep in itself, but encom-passes the time we dedicate to it and the conditions under which sleep does or doesn’t occur. According to Roenneberg, the task of restoring the relative signifi cance of sleep is a social and political responsibility. And what about the reference to the washing machine in the title? Its development from invention through today presents some similarities to the evolution of organisms. Th e author uses this metaphor in his book and his lectures in order to help explain the evolution of sleep.
