1. ONLINE DISTANCE EDUCATION PROSPECTS IN INDIA
Online Distance Education is an emerging global phenomenon that promises to
alter fundamentally the nature of traditional education and training. The
increasingly pervasive nature of the Net and the Web, and the collaborative
infrastructure provided by net- centric computing have led to the growth of online
distance education. The phenomenal growth of Online Distance Education is
explained by the fact that over 90% of college students access the Internet, with
50% accessing the Web daily. Also, Indian companies and organizations are
spending huge amounts on in-house training and education programs through
distance and blended mode. The popularity of Online Distance Education
programs has further increased with the availability of on-line discussion forums.
2. KARNATAKA STATE OPEN UNIVERSITY (KSOU) , MYSORE
Karnataka State Open University was formally established on June 1, 1996
under the Karnataka State Open University Act of 1992, with the objectives of
introducing and promoting the system of open university and distance learning in
the state of Karnataka, and coordinating and determining the standard of such a
system in the state. The University has its headquarters in Mysore. The

university was initiated by the Government of Karnataka. The objective is to
provide education to people who cannot attend full time or part time educational
courses offered by universities.

he distance education programmes of Karnataka State Open University provide
opportunities to working professionals who cannot afford full time education to
earn degrees or diplomas. The Karnataka State Open University originally
started as the Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Education, a
wing of University. The Karnataka State Open University is the 8th Open
University to be established in India.
3. RECOGNITIONS
1. Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) was established on 1st June 1996 with the assent of H.E. Governor of Karnataka as a full fledged University in the academic year 1996 vide Government notification No/EDI/UOV/dated 12th February 1996 (Karnataka State Open University Act – 1992).
2. DEC Approval:- Karnataka State Open University is a recognized University of Distance Education Council under the agies of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) (Revised notification F. No. DEC/OU/Recog./2008).
3. AIU:-Karnataka State Open University is a regular member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi since 1999 (No. EV/11(80)/99/203935-4172).

4. ACU:-Karnataka State Open University is a permanent member of Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), London, United Kingdom since 1999. Its member code is: ZKASOPENUINI.
5. AAOU:- Karnataka State Open University is a permanent member of Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU), Beijing, China since 1999.
6. COL:- Karnataka State Open University has association with Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Vancouver, Canada since 2003. COL is an intergovernmental organization created by Commonwealth Heads of Government to encourage the development and sharing of open learning / distance education knowledge, resources and technologies.

6. COMPUTER BASED STUDY MATERIAL

University has converted the Self Learning Material into Computer Bases
Tutorials (CBT). The gist and essence of the text books are converted to digital
frames that are embedded with animations, movies, graphs, inline questions and
are interesting to go through. With the help of CBT any student can study at
his / her home or at any place where computer is available.
7. ONLINE EXAMINATION
Unlike conventional mode of examination KSOU is conducting online
examination of the students enrolled under various programs through model test
centres in different parts of the Country. The Online Examination is fully
automated, hence no intervention of manual system. The University has issued
Identity card and examination hall tickets to every student, which will check by
examination superintendent at the examination centre. The result declaration
part is also expedite in online mode.
8. RESULT DECLARATION
The result of the students will be issued in soft copy within the deadline of 7-10
days. The mark sheets of the students will be issued by the University within 45-

50 days of the examinations. This will ensure proper student satisfaction and
better service at the study centers end.
9. REVENUE
From the semester/yearly fees (without examination fees) collected From
students University pays 50% as study centre share. Study Centre may charge
extra fees from the students for providing other facilities which are not
mentioned in the agreement.
