Message from the Head of School:
Dear Schutz Families,
I hope everyone is enjoying the extended weekend. I want to draw your attention to a couple of
events coming up.
The PTA is meeting this Wednesday right after school.
As soon as that meeting is over we will be meeting to discuss becoming an IB School, do a
short demo lesson in inquiry learning, and discuss how becoming an IB PYP school will
benefit our community.
We hope you can join us this week and learn more about what the PTA is doing and how becoming
an IB school will improve the learning of all our students.
Schutz has had a long history of partnership with the Cosmopolitan Rotary Club. The Rotary Club in
collaboration with Schutz is hosting their annual “Walk-A-Thon” on April 3rd. We are encouraging
our students and families to participate in this event. The project helps to raise awareness and funds
for people in Alexandria who have lost a limb. Please put this event on your calendar. More
information will be coming out to have our students and families sign up. It will be a great
opportunity for us to practice and model the Schutz Learner Profile.
This month we are working on the Schutz Learner Profile trait of Respect. We define respect as: due
regard for the feelings, wishes, or rights of others. Respect is one of the key values that Schutz has
embraced for many years. Respect is connected to our ability to show compassion and empathy
towards others. I will reference again the Harvard University project of Making Caring
Common. Take a look at this web site for some tips on helping children become caring and
respectful. If you don’t have time here is one tip from the article:
Keep to a clear message. Consider the daily messages you send to children about the
importance of caring. For example, instead of saying “The most important thing is that you’re
happy,” you might say “The most important thing is that you’re kind and that you’re happy.”
Don’t forget to support your children’s reading each night. We maintain the very best school library
in Alexandria. We support hard copy books and digital reading platforms. Each evening our students
have between 20 to 30 minutes of reading assigned to them each day. Make sure your child gets that
time to read. It does not matter what language they read in so it can be a good time for them to
practice a different language. For younger children this time can be a great time for mothers and
fathers to read to their children. This is one of the most meaningful activities we can do as parents.
Check out our reading resources on the Schutz Web Site under Library Resources.
Message from the Admission Office:

Message from the Library: As you know our school libraries are encouraging students to use
the ‘Sora’ app, which is a digital library offering a variety of
popular and engaging ebooks for reading. We are currently
offering this app to all students from Grades 4-12! This is an
amazing reading app that can be used at school and at home
from a laptop, tablet or phone. If your child hasn’t already
shown you this reading app, then ask them to share it with you
and have them show you what book(s) they are currently reading. It’s such a great tool to use
anytime your child wants to read, but it’s especially convenient when you're wanting to read on the
weekends and on holidays. Your book can be right there on your handheld device whenever you're
reading to read. It’s so easy to use and makes reading that much more accessible.
We know that it is important to keep students excited about their personal reading interests, but to
also make sure that they can find what they need to continue to be motivated to read for fun. We’re
wondering if you know what your child likes to read? Asking your child to talk about their interests
helps them to reflect on what genres they enjoy, so they continue to search and ask for titles they are
interested in. So many of our students really enjoy reading out loud. It can be so much fun to share a
book with someone you love, by reading out loud to them. It’s also a great way to further develop
reading fluency skills. We encourage you to try this at home - have your child read to you. Help
your child develop a habit of reading for 20 to 30 minutes every day, if they aren’t already.

Extra, Extra, Read All About It….. We’re so excited to share this news!
Sora has recently received international recognition by Time Magazine for being one of best
inventions of 2019. We’re including a brief printout of this article to share with you.
Stay tuned for upcoming reviews on some of our Sora books! Happy Reading Everyone!
Message from the Leadership Team:
Hand Hygiene at SAS: Cleaning hands is one of the most important steps that can be taken to prevent the spread of infection-
causing germs. Keeping hands clean is an important way to avoid getting sick or spreading germs to
others. Thus, we recommend that each student bring a personal container of hand sanitizer to school
and use it often while on campus.
National Honor Society:
National Honor Society Pinning ceremony! Congrats to these wonderful students on all their hard
work and dedication! They got their pins!!!!
Message from the Interact Club:
Schutz American School Interact Club provides service to others, promotes integrity,
and advances world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship
with business, professionals, and community leaders. We follow the guidelines of
the Rotary Cosmopolitan Club in Alexandria. The Interact Club provides a direct
means for our students to demonstrate and further develop the Schutz Learner
Profile. Through the International Rotary Club approval and pinning, the Schutz
American School Interact Club is now a Rotary certified club. Our aim is to serve
our community through different projects and have a direct and meaningful impact on those in
need. We focus our efforts on our local community within Schutz and Alexandria. Our club helps
out the community with a number of major projects annually: 1. The Blanket Drive
2. Special Education School Support
3. Local Children’s and Government Hospitals
4. Three different Children's Shelters (orphanages)
5. Schutz support staff (workers) Ramadan Family Packages
6. Annual Schutz support staff (workers) Christmas Children’s Party and Gifts
Our club aspires to create a world where no one in the community is left behind. We seek to make a
difference inside the walls of Schutz and in some of the neediest locations in Alexandria. In order to fund all these projects the Interact Club is going to have a Car Wash fundraisers. The
amount of funds generated by actually washing cars is limited. You, your company, or organization
could consider being a sponsor and help our Interact Club achieve our funding goals and support
these worthy projects. In return, for sponsorships, we will recognize your company to the school
community through our Weekly Communicator and have your company logo on a banner displayed
at the school. We hope you are able to contribute and we appreciate your continued support of our students as they
learn about the importance of service in our local community and demonstrate the Schutz Learner
Profile. You may make a donation at the finance office to the “Interact Club”. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Sincerely, Youanna Aziz Schutz American School Interact Club President
