2009 has certainly been quite a year! Just for starters, our “Male Karaoke Vocalist of the Year” winner from KaraokeFest 2009, Abraham Mc-Donald, went on from there to win “Oprah’s Karaoke Challenge” and took home a check for $250,000 and a recording deal! Wow! Way to go Abraham!

Some of you may know that the Oprah Team came out from Chicago and spent almost the entire day at Ka-raokeFest 2009 taping and interview-ing the contestants from our singing competitions for possible inclusion in their show. That’s where they found Abraham McDonald…and the rest is history, as they say.

Karaoke Scene would like to express our thanks to the “Oprah Winfrey Show” for their positive portrayal

of Karaoke on national television. They have done a great deal for the Karaoke community as they showed Karaoke as it really is, not just a bunch of drunks with a microphone, but real people with real talent, reaching out with something wonderful to offer. We would also like to thank Oprah’s staff for their courtesy and professionalism. They are really a class organization.

The Karaoke industry continues to move in new directions with new hardware and software choices pop-ping up all the time. And Karaoke, as an entertainment medium, continues to flourish. Karaoke remains the num-ber one form of live entertainment in Southern California with hundreds of venues from Ventura County to the Mexican border. And Karaoke Scene Magazine is available in all of them to be enjoyed by everyone.

Our “Singer’s Showcase” at www.KaraokeScene.com continues to be a huge favorite with singers all around the world. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should because you have really been missing a great time. It’s like an online Karaoke party.

And for all you KJs out there, the “KJ Directory” at www.KaraokeScene.com is the perfect way to make sure the whole Karaoke world knows about you and your Karaoke shows. It is the ideal way to let everyone know who you are, where you are and what you can offer in the way of services. And it’s inexpensive, too, only $25 for a whole year!

Don’t forget, you can see your own photos in Karaoke Scene Magazine. We are still accepting photos from all over the Karaoke community for publication in future issues. We ap-preciate all the folks who have sent us their photos and hope to hear from more of you in the future. Here are just a few suggestions:

Your photos should be about sing-ing.

Please make sure your photos are sharp and clear.

Please be sure your photos are in a digital format (jpeg files); no prints.

Our staff is very busy working on the upcoming SongBurst ‘10 Sing-ing Competition, the winter’s biggest singing contest. SongBurst will again offer both an adult (18 and older) and junior (17 and younger) contest. There will be thousands in cash and prizes as well as a terrific time for all, individu-als and families alike. Exact dates were not available at press time due to the potential sale of the Orange County Fairgrounds by the State of California who owns the property. We are await-ing word from the Orange County Market Place as to the progress of the situation. There is even a chance that Songburst ’10 will take place at a different venue, depending on how the situation develops. You can check out all the latest information regarding SongBurst ’10 at www.KaraokeScene.com as soon as it is available and, of course, our next issue will provide the complete details.

Congratulations!!! Three time KJ of the Year winner for Orange Coun-ty, Donna Thomas has once again raised a phenomenal $13,500 for the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles during her annual gala fundraiser at the TomKat Lounge in Buena Park. Karaoke Scene salutes Donna Thomas and all of the many folks who unself-ishly give so much of their time and money to help these children who need it so much.

Finally, at this special time of year, it is good for all of us to reflect on the many blessings we receive but take for granted. Try to do a kindness to some-one who may need a little boost. Take a step back and maybe let another per-son have their way about something. Try giving the gifts of “love and kind-ness, warm hearts and an outstretched hand of tolerance” this holiday season. Do this, and it will surely come back to you many times over.

All of us at Karaoke Scene Magazine wish you the happiest of holidays and a prosperous, song-filled New Year!

“Can Alcohol ruin

your voice?”

Choosing toSing Better

Life, at its core, is an endless stream of choices. Your brain’s most important function is to

separate the successful choices from the failures. This is true for every member of the animal kingdom; from humans to fruit flies. Making the wrong choices means extinction, or at least lousy singing. These choices in-clude conscious ones like deciding on the best songs to sing and unconscious ones like when to blink. Some choices were made for you before you were born. The DNA in your genes dictated the size of your larynx, based on the mating choices made down your fam-ily tree. Obviously, your time is bet-ter spent focusing on the things you can change. But the first step is often missed by those anxious to improve – choosing to sing better.

This may seem like a strange concept. If it’s that simple then why don’t more people just choose to sing better? They could, but most people assume a desire is the same as a choice. It is not. A de-sire is a hope that things will improve. It’s passive. A choice is an action for change. You’ve already separated yourself from those who simply desire to sing better by making the decision to read this article. What’s ahead of you now are many additional smaller choices; each another step towards better singing. Most of these choices have been invisible to you in the past. I know it seems that your jaw just tenses on its own when you reach for a high note – it’s not like you asked it to. Yet your brain does, in fact, choose to turn on that tension every single time. Exposing those unconscious choices, and taking the effort to correct them is how you will eventually rise above the effort of singing and perform from a completely different mindset.

What researchers have discovered is that your mind plays a very influen-tial role in those decisions your brain makes. What your mind is interested in is what pushes the brain to develop in a particular direction. A common metaphor is to imagine your brain as a computer and your mind as the

software. Load any computer with medical software and the computer becomes a very specialized device for diagnosing illness. Load it with sport statistics and the computer can win any argument in a bar. The computer doesn’t care what it’s being used for, just as your brain doesn’t care that you know the difference between a hypo and hyper active thyroid or that the Yankees won the 1956 World Se-ries with the only perfect game ever pitched in post season. Nor does your brain care how well you sing. There-fore, it is your mind you’ll need to reprogram so your brain is better able to choreograph all of the various body parts required for you to sing well.

Right now is as good of a time as any to choose to sing better. Go ahead, say it to yourself. Notice one of two things: You either didn’t say it or you did. If you didn’t say it I would like you to forgive yourself for merely reading this article and not choosing to sing better and try it again. The rest of us will wait. Okay, now notice one and only one thing: Nothing happened! That’s right, no profound sensation, no fireworks and your singing certainly isn’t any better then it was a moment ago. That’s because you simply made a statement – and talk is cheap.

To really choose to sing better means taking action in that direction. The result you want becomes a corner-stone that guides all other actions and choices to come. Brick by brick you’ll build yourself a heightened ability to sing. Each brick is a mere split-second reaction going on in the brain. As you connect more and more of these reac-tions together, operating them in sync with the result you chose, your voice will behave as a perfect representative of your spirit. It will broadcast to the world every little thought and emotion you are experiencing at that moment. People will call you a great singer.

The thought of possessing such ability can be intimidating. Your

♪The demand for creative thinking is a challenge for the singer of today. Singers

are expected to be both emotional and logical, more than ever now, as the world changes with lightening speed. This new paradigm requires us to use more than the logical left-brain skills we used in school. These days, we all need to get into a “right mind.”

The two brains are separated, and incredibly distinct, which we’ll discuss later.

But just so you know…

characteristics of the left brain:

1. Identifies words 2. Assigns meaning 3. Follows rules and schedules 4. Interprets 5. Factual and detailed 6. Emotionally positive 7. Analyzes 8. Orderly 9. Critical10. Anxious11. Classifies and judges12. Objectifies13. Processes sequentially14. Linear15. Uses symbols and ideas for sensations

characteristics of the right brain:

1. Identifies patterns 2. Assigns value 3. Follows daydreams and impulses 4. Imagines 5. Visual and conceptual 6. Emotionally negative 7. Synthesizes 8. Values sensation for itself 9. Spontaneous10. Dreamy11. Suspicious12. Random13. Plays and responds.14. Processes simultaneously15. Meandering

There, that explains so many things on so many levels, doesn’t it?! The problem is that the two sides actu-ally see the world in vastly different ways. In our current society, the left side just “doesn’t get” what the right side is all about. It tends to dismiss anything significant coming into con-sciousness from its “flakey” cranial twin. Sometimes skills which the right brain can perform better are routinely handled with less skill, by the left brain…such as singing. The right brain is far superior to the left in every aspect of singing. The left brain is engaged when we are read-ing, which is one more good reason NOT to read lyrics on a screen! As soon as you read, instantly you are not as good a singer…don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Here are some exercises to get you into right brain: Walk a different way that’s difficult: backwards, right foot and right hand engaged, now left foot, left hand…anything that is initially unfamiliar. Write your name backwards, then upside down. Sing immediately after doing these things. Also, if you are singing after hours of left brain activity, move your left hand and point your eyes to the left. Don’t let your eyes blink at all and sing. This usually puts you into right brain and can be done onstage…I’ve done it!

Another way to get out of your “criti-cal” left brain is to emotionally con-nect with the song. Imagining is the playground of the right brain. The

reluctance to reach this powerful place can easily sabotage progress and keep you locked in an endless process of improving. Instead, look at your choice to sing better in a more realistic light. Worrying about what life will be like once you attain your dream voice is the same as worrying about what life will be like the day you choose to let your hair grow. The next day you’re exactly the same. A

week later and you are still the same person. After a month of choosing the same thing every day there will be a slight change, though people closest to you will fail to notice. However, after several months of choosing to sing better and choosing to let your hair grow you will hear and see the results of your daily choices. I should know; I’ve got lots of experience with both!

Your expertise in this area is directly related to practice…“deep practice.” You must visualize yourself singing, feeling, being expressive…and then practice until you achieve what you visual-

ized. You can also visualize yourself practicing…that actually works! Your right brain has been maligned for years as “silly,” but things are changing. Learning a new song is a fun thing! I can get so bored sometimes, even with the very large repertoire that I have accumulated over the years. Yep! I could sing for hours straight on end with all the stuff I know. Yet, I still feel a great desire to keep learning more and improving on my ability. This is when I pull out the “learn in the future” list.

It really should only take most people about a week or so to really learn a new Karaoke song, practicing it over and over again for about 20 minutes a day. If it takes me much more than that, I know that I am probably not ready for it yet. A good way to learn and memorize a song is to learn it in pieces. Take the catchiest part of the tune, the chorus, and sing it over and over again until you’ve got it in your head enough to sing it in the car or while cooking or whatever other things you do. Then learn the first verse. Again, singing it over and over again in the same manner, and then putting it together with the chorus. Then try going back and learn the rest of the words, the arrangement, the bridge, and then dynamics, etc. I suppose different people have dif-ferent techniques for learning than others, but I have found this to be very effective…especially with re-membering the words.

You don’t really need to do that with Karaoke…or do you? Every little thing that gets imbedded into the brain takes less concentration on that one thing after we learn it so well, like driving. You’re paying attention to the road and making all the right turns and not running pedestrians down in cross walks, yet you can and do think about other things at the same time, like doing your laundry, or getting the kids off to school, or whatever. The same thing goes with

your Karaoke singing. The more com-fortable you become with the lyrics and the arrangement, the more focus you can put on your dynamics and mic technique. Funny thing is, if you keep this up, after a while you will have that song down so well that you might find yourself doing a perfect job on that Karaoke tune while you’re thinking about all the laundry you have to do back home. I would say that, for me, this a great time to learn another new Karaoke tune.

Looking for a new or better sound can be a beautiful thing. In addi-tion to one’s ability, good sound and a great mic are very important to one’s overall performance. There are times when you may go out to a Karaoke venue and the sound quality is just not there. This is sad, but it happens. You really can’t control this. All you can do is find another place that you like with a good professional Karaoke host and go there. Another thing you can do is bring your own mic. Some (but not most) Karaoke hosts will let you bring your own mic in addition to bringing your own discs.

There is ton of gear out there and it can become very confusing to a nov-ice and, sometimes, even to an old “road dog” like myself. I say, “Keep it simple!” Unless you are a real pro who has been around for a while and know what exactly what you are look-ing at, select something that works well for you…something that has a good, clean and crisp sound and that is proven to be durable as well as having a “reasonable” price tag. More does not necessarily mean better! You do not have to spend a fortune to get a quality mic.

Call me old fashioned, but I still like corded mics. Cordless mics can be a real hassle as they can pick up allot of RF interference. If you do go for a cordless type of microphone, be sure to get some help in pricing out

Page 10: Karaoke Scene Magazine1

Gear(continued from page 8)

the right thing or you could be very sorry. This is some thing that you don’t want to get on the cheap just because you might think it to be a real bargain. Be careful.

On the other hand, mics with cords can be very reasonable, easy to set up and cause far fewer real technical problems that any regular Joe/Jane can’t figure out. Look for a clean, clear (and not muddy) sound. Cheap-er mics can be very muddy, kind of leaving you feeling like, “Where is the rest of my voice?” To exagger-ate, like you might have a towel over the mic. It’s just not all there. Highs, lows…things are just missing and you can’t quite figure it out. Another big thing, does the mic make allot of noise when you are holding it? Does the cord at the base of the mic rattle and make allot of loud and obnoxious sound? This is something that is huge to me! I can not stand it! Keep in mind that if you are talking through it or just holding it and it is doing this, that it will also be doing it during your song. If you have not been singing for a very long time and are not accustomed to sound gear, you may not notice it at first…but others will.

The only real problem with corded mics is…the cord. You might find it in your way, tripping on it, etc. If you or your kids sing at home it could result in a broken port on your ampli-fier or Karaoke unit. Another thing

about mics with cords is that you may want to replace well used cords regularly. If your corded mic is not working, investigate the cord first. The mic may be fine and the cord may be the problem. You don’t want to throw out the baby with the bath water. Also be sure that if you have a stereo mic input that you use a ste-reo mic cord. A mono mic cord will not work properly with a stereo mic input! Don’t keep old broken cords around either. It will just confuse you later. If the cord doesn’t work, throw it out and get a new one.

Choosing the correct mic will de-pend on your application. Do you have kids that are going to be using it too? You can spend allot of money on a very high quality mic and find out that it picks up everything…too much even! If you do not trust your-self then have a salesperson that works in that department help you out. Just be careful that you are not “oversold.” Try to take a friend with you that sings and knows something about mics, especially if you are go-ing cordless!

What ever your personal preference is, I would recommend taking your time, getting the proper information, and trying a few things out (more than once). Weigh out the different possi-bilities before you make a purchase. A microphone can be a very personal thing. You owe it to yourself to make a wise and informed decision.

20 years ago a representative of DK Karaoke walked into the old Tustin Yacht Club, now known as McClure’s Bar & Grill, and offered the owner a demo month of a Karaoke machine complete with 30 disks (all that were available at that time). Skeptical, the owner asked the solo singer, guitar-ist, Tice Griffin, who was currently performing there to host a Karaoke show.

The owner never bought the ma-chine, but Tice saw a tremendous potential in this new craze. What followed has been a 20 year uninter-rupted run of Tice Griffin’s Karaoke Revue.

During this time Tice has raised 2 children, a son who at 18 is a budding musician and a younger daughter. His daughter, who is 16 going on “WHATEVER,” has written this article about her father:

“Tice Griffin has been bringing joy to all who have experienced his artistry for over 20 years. Dubbed ‘the hard-est working KJ in the business,’ Tice makes it a pleasure for everyone to enjoy the art of singing. There is nev-er a dull moment for the singers or the audience. With the newest technology Tice makes it effortless for anyone to sing any song they request.

Aside from his Karaoke hosting he is an extremely talented singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is more than willing to accompany you with background vocals and guitar.

Entertaining seven to eight gigs a week at nu-merous establishments, mostly in Southern Cali-fornia’s beach cities (see ad for schedule or go to www.ticegriffin.com), you’ll be guaranteed a rocking time with MC T-ice.

You may think, as Tice’s daughter, all this praise is just an attempt to get

a raise in my allowance. But, I’m being sincere. So many people would agree with me.”

Don’t miss out on Tice’s upcom-ing Karaoke contests: in November and December at Woody’s Wharf in Newport Beach, and at Stevens Steak and Seafood House, in the City of Commerce, beginning January 2011 (see Steven’s ad).

What a year for Abraham McDon-ald! His story of accomplishment and seeing dreams fulfilled is the stuff of legend. Yet, when we spoke to this fine gentleman of Southern California Karaoke, what we found is a grounded, focused, mature-thinking individual, who deserves all that has happened for him over these past few months. By our thinking, Abraham is at the begin-ning of an exciting journey which will take him to new opportunities and success.

Many of you know that Abraham was the recent winner of “Male Karaoke Vocalist of the Year” at KaraokeFest 2009. He was seen at KaraokeFest by the “Oprah’s Karaoke Challenge” team as they were there taping all day seeking exceptional singers for their show. Thousands of other individuals across the U.S. attempted to capture the show’s attention with mailed-in videos and live performances (if the Oprah team was on hand to witness their singing). Eight semi-finalists made the cut, coming from various cities across the nation. When the dust finally settled, there were only three, Abraham McDonald from Southern California, Donnie Denny of Hertford, North Carolina and Rob Weddle of Orlando, Florida. Abraham’s renditions of the Luther Vandross remake of “Superstar” and Oleta Adams’ “Get Here” captured the nation. After more than two mil-lion folks from all over the country

held in Houston called “Act So,” in which he represented the Beverly Hills chapter of the organization. He recalled that he also performed “Get Here” against the representatives from all fifty states in winning the Gold Medal.

During this time in his life, he met Trevor Lawrence, the son of one of the Supremes, who helped him in being accepted at the Hamilton High Music Academy. While there,

he met Gospel great, Andre Crouch, visited Norway to sing in a Gospel group, and was given the opportunity to share a duet with Greg Allman that appeared in the movie, Under Siege 2. Actually, pop star, Jackson

voted in the finals, Abraham emerged victorious and won the $250,000 first prize. So moved was guest contribut-ing celebrity judge, L.A. Reid, that he also offered Abraham a chance to cut a song for his Island Def Jam Music Group label.

Now let’s meet Abraham McDon-ald…

Abraham began singing seriously at the age of thirteen. He dabbled with

songs prior to this, capturing the at-tention of one of his biggest support-ers, his sister, Breeze. In fact, during this time, she wrote a song for him to learn. Basically shy, she involved him in a couple of singing contests in 1990. Despite his quiet demeanor, he won both contests. First, at the local Avalon Discount Swap Meet, and later a national NAACP competition

Browne, made this happen when he introduced Abraham to the movie’s producer, Steven Seagal.

After high school was a quiet time for Abraham. Despite his initial success, the McDonald family lived a modest life with all the trials and tribulations that befall normal fami-lies. That is…until 2009.

Abraham was having car issues (as we all seem to at one point or anoth-er). Breeze thought she had helped him solve his automotive problems by providing him with a ’94 Chevy. However, the car was rickety, and it broke down almost immediately. Breeze’s solution…enter a Karaoke contest!

By his own admission, Abraham had not really experienced Kara-oke, per se. Yet the idea of travel-ing around the corner to Chester Washington Golf Course to enter a local contest appealed to him. What he thought was going to be a one-day event that could help him get his car out of the shop, turned into an odyssey that would land him on national television.

He discovered that (as he puts it), “God had a plan for me.” So during the KaraokeFest 2009 contest, he made a bunch of friends, “Quando Jones, Tish Jones (no relation), David Elliott, Bobby Vegas, Gary Maddux, and many more.” What he had learned is that the Karaoke com-munity is bristling with wonderfully supportive people, who love the joy of competition. And they were a lot like him! He considered these new singing friends a gift from God, and all helped renew his interest to for-

tify his dreams and fulfill his wishes that had been buried for so long. He realized that his only enemy was his fear to try again. So that night at Chester Washington he made a private pledge to set goals and travel around the country singing.

He also had a goal for the Ka-raoke community, “Karaoke is hotness! We need to get this on the map. When I think of Ka-raoke Scene Magazine – it helps folks see their dream. I really want to see this happen. It’s about desire and song choice.” So he pro-ceeded on through the KaraokeFest semi-finals, and onto the finals at the L.A. County Fair. He is proud that the ’94 Chevy is out of the shop, though he’s not sure that he will even buy a new car just yet.

Taking the initial meeting with Oprah’s people seriously, he decided to send them a video of his singing the National Anthem. However, he was thrilled to find out that he made the Oprah show based on his performance at the KaraokeFest Finals in September, since this was the catalyst for his opportunity. He was playfully annoyed that Oprah’s people tricked him by the way he was told by the host that he was a semi

finalist for the Chal-lenge. Ultimate glee was his later reaction.

What Abraham would not joke about is the profes-sionalism of Oprah’s staff. He says, “They treated ev-ery contestant like Rod Stewart had just arrived at the airport.” He wanted to send a shout out to these

tireless workers: Leslie, Brian (B-Rocker), Meghan, Ann, Julie, Taylor, Torrance etc.

“They built our confidence from day one. They also dress well, all looking fabulous each day.”

He hopes that this experience would change eight lives (the semi-finalists) for the better. When he made the Fi-nals, he felt that God carried him to the winner’s circle. He speaks very well of the other finalists. “Rob’s spirit, I loved, and he rocked! I felt Donnie; I think he is America’s new Garth Brooks.” The fact that both

Donnie and Abraham were wor-ship leaders was important for our magnanimous winner. Something

he hopes shined in his interview portion of the show.

He really enjoyed the way the voting procedure worked for both KaraokeFest and Oprah’s Kara-oke Challenge. He loved that his peers were involved in the former. And he hastens to remind future singers in the KaraokeF-est contest that it’s about being a good cit izen. “Peers do not toler-ate clouds over your head.” He felt that audience-judging was more fickle. “Who would they like to invite to their home?” was the ques-tion that ran through his mind about this aspect of the latter competition. He called the celebrities who were invited by Oprah in both rounds, “counselors that helped provide guidance to the singers and the voters.”

He wanted to share the fact that waiting on television goes way beyond what airs. But, Abraham

credits Director Joe Terry for his orga-nizational skills. He was meticulous in the way he would do the setup (called “blocking”). He decided during the fi-nal day’s taping, win or lose, to just be happy to be there, and be appreciative, whatever the outcome. While waiting, he remembered that God had given him a taste of this when he was young. He was content with the idea that the recalibration process was important as he walked away and returned to focus and deliver. He calls it “sober thinking.” We agree.

On given the opportunity to work with L.A. Reid, whom he calls an industry guru, he now feels he is in awesome hands. With the steady help of his sis-ter, Breeze, and the team he is assem-bling, Abraham is now ready to begin the process of providing joy to the

country with great music. He wants to sing for the President at t he Whi te House. He hopes to be able to ap-pear on El-l e n , T h e View, Jimmy

Kimmel, etc.

He also wants to carry Karaoke on his back. He thinks Quando Jones would be a great television host of a Kara-oke-oriented program. He promises to find new ways to bring Karaoke to the nation. Somehow, we completely believe him. And we wish Abraham McDonald the best of luck and God’s speed in all that will come his way.

For the last 10 years, Karaoke has been a huge part of what happens regularly at the Palos Verdes Bowl in Torrance. Of course, Willie Corso, P.V. Bowl’s Bar Manag-er certainly knows that, too. Hats off to Willie! Without him, Karaoke at the Bowl may never have been given a chance. Willie saw the potential in Ka-raoke and jumped on board to make it a success. He helped promote and tended bar on al-most every Karaoke night for the past 10 years, and has even been known to sing one every once in a while. He has recently retired and every-one is sure going to miss him.

But let’s not for-get about Charlotte Melsh, P.V. Bowl manager, who was the first KJ at the Bowl. Just one of the many hats she continues to wear. P.V. Bowl owner, George Brandt, has also been a strong supporter of Karaoke at the Bowl. He opened the doors and staffed the Bowl around the clock for five days straight to provide a place to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims, while break-ing the world record for continuous group Karaoke singing.

Now let’s talk about the next ten years. Under new man-agement, Palos Verdes Bowl’s bar has taken great strides to keep up the traditions and reputation of being one of the best Ka-raoke venues in Southern California, being nominated for “Venue of the Year” at KaraokeFest for many years and winner in 2006. The Bowl has started a remodel which will include a new stage, new plasma TVs, a new large comfortable booth at the back of the Karaoke room, “VIP” section, a new DJ/KJ booth with easier access for the costumers, a brand new touch screen Karaoke system with green screen capability and even a new pool table and darts for the non-singers in the bunch.

This new touch screen Karaoke sys-tem features state of the art technology

Palos Verdes Bowl

that is second to none. The singer can create their own folder and save song selections with key changes so they can access them more easily. All the

hassle of books, slips, pencils and pressure to get your request turned in is erased. If you wish, you can choose all your songs at once for the whole night, then sit and enjoy the show until it’s your turn to sing. The green

screen is on the video side of things. If you chose, your image can be pro-jected into a music video, or any image

for that matter. They project those images onto some of the TV screens so that all can enjoy. Oh, and if your still old school, no worries, it also plays discs.

Let’s not forget about the staff. The new bar staff at Palos Verdes Bowl is

superb. Louise (the new Bar Manager) is certainly not new to the business. Growing up around the family business has allowed her expe-rience to bring fresh new ideas to the Bowl. You’ll see live music along with a lot of other fantastic entertainment coming soon. She has also put her best girls behind the bar on Karaoke nights and even added a cocktail server when

needed, Stephanie (Friday night) and Natalie (Saturday night) have taken over with-out missing a beat after Willie retired. They are both loved by all the regulars and strongly support Karaoke.

Starlight Entertainment’s own Tony DeFazio is back hosting at P.V. Bowl on Friday nights, where

it all began. Brand new on the scene, KJ Jimmy D. brings his brand of host-ing to the Bowl on Saturday nights. We promise both of these guys will make you smile while you experience great sound and song selections.

If it’s been a while since you’ve been to Palos Verdes Bowl, do yourself a favor and drop by. You’ll have a blast. (All remodels mentioned are sched-uled to be completed by the holiday season.)

The Palos Verdes Bowl is located at 24600 Crenshaw Bl. in Torrance (310) 326-5120.

Agave Bar & GrillNew Wednesday Night Karaoke Hot Spot

Last Wednesday night I decided to have a burger at Agave Bar & Grill. It’s located inside the clubhouse of our local golf course, Angeles National Golf Club, in Sunland. To my surprise they were having Karaoke. A young woman was on the stage singing op-era. That’s right...opera...something by Puccini. It was beautiful! The next singer sang “Thriller” by Michael Jackson. Incredible! This couldn’t really be Karaoke…could it? They were so good! I finished by burger and found myself staying for another 3 hours enjoying singer after singer.

The show is run by TJ Entertainment Productions and hosted by Valerie and sound mixer Barbara. These two used to do shows in the 1990s under the same business name and are now back together at the Agave. Back in the day, they were renowned for their phenom-enal sound and style of hosting.

They still have that terrific sound sys-tem and vast song selection but this is Karaoke with a twist. Pat and Barbara Dempsey, owners of TJ Entertain-ment, are using the Karaoke venue to help promote aspiring singers and musicians. “I think Karaoke is a won-derful avenue to bring people of all backgrounds and ethnicities together. We want to take Karaoke to the next level,” says Barbara. Celebrities and industry pros are coming in to hear and critique the singers. Dot Todman, vocal coach to American Idol con-testants, Masahiko Kaneko-a music recording executive, and Jacques Cas-tro, a manager and talent agent, were recently reviewing the show.

TJ Entertainment holds weekly audi-tions during regular Karaoke for their end of the month showcase, held the last Wednesday of the month. Three talented singers are featured dur-ing the Dinner Showcase starting at 7:30pm. The showcase gives sing-ers the opportunity to invite family and friends as well as talent agents and managers in the recording, film

and television industry to see them perform live. November’s showcase entitled “Perfect Gentlemen” featured 3 male singers.

This showcase is just the screening process for the larger project they are working on…Karaoke singers performing at the Hollywood Bowl. Valerie Brown, co-owner of Valbar Productions and executive producer of the “A Night Under the Stars” project says, “We are very excited about the Hollywood Bowl project. It will be the first of its kind nationwide with annual shows to follow. Each year will be bigger and better. I first thought of the idea after visiting the Hollywood Bowl for a jazz concert. I thought that it would be a wonder-ful experience for an aspiring singer to be able to perform under the stars. And what a boost to their resume! I shared this with Barbara, she agreed, and we were on our way.” Barbara states, “It’s a huge undertaking but we have teamed up with the right people and sponsors and things are moving forward as scheduled.”

TJ Entertainment Productions is pro-viding a tremendous opportunity to aspiring singers and musicians to per-form in front of a live audience. They are using Karaoke as the stepping-stone to help keep dreams alive.

Agave Bar & Grill has good, reason-ably priced food and great drink spe-cials ($2 draft beer on this particular Wed night.) It’s a beautiful, unpre-tentious, upscale location. The golf course is open to the public. I may not be a golfer but I will definitely be coming back for dinner on Wednesday Karaoke nights.

Angeles National Golf Club Agave Bar & Grill is located at 9401 Foothill Bl. in Sunland (818) 951-8771 (www.angelesnational.com). For more info visit www.tjentertainmentproductions.com or send an E-mail to: [email protected]

By Carla Negri

Christmas is Here,Tra La Tra La Tra La

I am pleased to announce at long last my return to the “Broadway” stage. This winter’s theatrical sea-

son will feature an ALL STAR CAST of locals in a wonderful version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” to be performed in an historic landmark location. The Warner Grand Theatre, located in the ACE (Arts/Culture/En-tertainment) district of San Pedro, is a restored movie palace from the early 1930’s. 22 years ago I appeared in a version of “Mame” in this same theatre, BEFORE they recovered the seats and did much restoration. It was wonderful to perform in such a grand space. I expect this production to be another fulfilling holiday experience appearing as LEAD CAROLER…and there are lots of carols to be sung.

I have been saying for many years “THIS Christmas will be different!” But this year it is very true. So many changes have taken place, even since the last article, and El Paso will never be the same for me. I have traded the beach and the pier for the waterfront and an historic downtown with lots of local color. First Thursday continues, even as the days grow shorter…lots of wonderful folks strolling around, sharing the cultural exchange.

6th Street hosts many venues, includ-ing Sacred Grounds, a coffeehouse with much live music available for the cost of a cup of “joe” and a cookie. Williams Bookstore hosts poetry read-ings and Mishi’s Strudel features live music and incredible Hungarian de-lights, both sweet and savory. Mishi’s is on 7th at Centre, down the street from my old corner at 6th and Centre. I am now further up the street where it is warmer and there are more strolling

visitors, in front of Z Fabrique on 6th, across the street and down a few doors from the Warner Grand.

Music is always a big part of my life (DUH) so now I am learning a whole new set of alto harmonies to some unfamiliar songs and original mate-rial, and all the verses to other, more common, carols.

One thing that defines a musician is the need to grow in some way. This is es-pecially true for singers (yes, Karaoke singers)…new material, new inter-pretations, another verse completely memorized, etc. That’s what keeps it fresh. Some years ago, when doing bar shows, it often seemed as though I was “phoning in” the song, almost as if I was “channeling” the song, not re-ally connected to the experience in the NOW. As I had sung the song literally hundreds of times before, I was always working on not using the screen for the lyrics, letting go of the crutch…it was a good thing. Now I don’t use a screen at all and many people marvel at my ability to remember all the lyrics. All I can say is “rejoice in repetition,” (my teacher’s pet phrase in recent years) and “practice makes better.”

Our production of “A Christmas Carol” will open on 12/22 and play through the holidays. There is a free senior citizens (and some others) in-vitational on Monday 12/21 at noon. We will be doing the final dress run-through and would appreciate an audi-ence. Call me at (562) 485-7097 and I’ll put you on my guest list.

That’s it for now. Happy holidays and…keep on singing!

Ace Karaoke: Past, Present& Future Events

By Raymond Mendoza

Looking for a fun way to bring your family together this holi-day season? Ace Karaoke

believes in providing great service with the latest Karaoke entertainment technology, in addition to provid-ing a service to the community. Ace Karaoke has events lined up that are sure to give your family’s December a soundtrack to remember.

In addition to having three retail stores in City of Industry, Chino and Santa Fe Springs along with an excellent online store at AceKaraoke.com, Ace Karaoke also participates in a number of local events to provide the crowd with popular music, great Karaoke machines, and all around fun for everyone. Ace was proud to have a retail/Karaoke performance booth at the most recent Orange County Fair. The event gave individuals a chance to sing the newest and coolest songs on the radio with the aid of some of the most sophisticated Karaoke home equipment in the market. Ace also gave away some magnificent gifts to crowd participants. The great

free prizes ranged from Karaoke CD packets with carrying cases, top of the line Acesonic brand microphones and Acesonic brand Karaoke machines, which included one of the newest and most popular Karaoke machines avail-able: the DGX-109.

Ace Karaoke wants to participate in MORE local events and reach out to the community, so if your school, club or city event is looking for entertain-ment or maybe you would like to have Ace Karaoke sponsor your club or athletic team, give Ace Karaoke a call at (888) 8WE- SING or (888) 893-7464 or visit them online at Acek-aroke.com.

Ace Karaoke was also fortunate to host a singing competition in the Chino Hills Spectrum and a Hallow-een themed Karaoke booth on Hal-loween day. The first affair had some of the best Chinese speaking singers compete at a chance to win a trip to China along with the Acesonic KOD 800, a Karaoke machine that holds

thousands of songs on an 1.5 terabyte hard drive. A terabyte is a unit of stor-age measurement that equals 1,000 gi-gabytes, which means more space for more Karaoke! Locals from the cities of Chino and Chino Hills were treated to an afternoon of great Karaoke tunes as well as a CD and equipment give-away. And while the event took place on a particularly hot afternoon, the contestants were still able to “cool off” with some grand entertainment, all provided by Ace Karaoke.

Ace Karaoke was thrilled to give out candy to all the little trick-or-treaters of the Chino/Chino Hills area while also hosting a Karaoke booth. The event, which was free to the public, took place on Halloween day from 4-8 p.m. and was a big success with parents and children as Ace Karaoke delivered some of the most well known Halloween themed hits as well as songs from Disney artists such as the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus all on some of the most advanced Karaoke equipment available.

December will be a very special month for Ace Karaoke as it means cel-ebrating such holidays as Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza and New Years Eve! Accordingly, Ace Karaoke will be decorating all three of their retail

Dec / Jan 2010 21 KARAOKE SCENE - If it’s not in “The Scene” it’s not making “The Scene”

Dear Little Miss Attitude,

Business has been really tough lately, seems like my shows are cancelling left and right. I’m worried about the holidays and making ends meet. Do you have any pointers or ideas to generate more business?

Signed,

Broke for the Holidays

Dear Broke for the Holidays,

It is no secret that times are tough and competition is fierce out there. In a market like this the best defense is going back to the basics (a good offense). Pick up the phone; make some calls to venues in your area. They may be feeling the wrath of the economy and may be looking for ways to entice customers back into their venues…alas, Karaoke nights!

Also make a true effort to keep in touch with the venues you already work at. Check often to see how things are going. Offer special nights or a contest to keep the Karaoke night fresh. A good way to boost business is to offer to make up flyers advertis-ing that the venue does catering and private parties for the holiday season

and Karaoke can also be provided. You may pick up an additional show here and there and also help your existing Karaoke nights by having private parties attend them.

Send out emails to your loyal custom-ers regularly and post on MySpace and FaceBook. Also CraigsList is a good place to run a free ad about your services. Make sure your com-pany name and number is on your automobile.

Last but definitely not least, let’s not forget about advertising in this won-derful publication, Karaoke Scene Magazine. Sometimes you have to spend a little money to make money and this publication is very cost effec-tive. By running an ad, you will get the word out to the target market by reaching the entire enormous South-ern California Karaoke community at one time. Utilize our services, go online and post your show on the website. Make sure your venue is listed in the Karaoke Klub Scene section and is UPDATED.

Strive for professionalism and you will come out ahead in 2010! Happy holidays and have a prosperous New Year.

Little Miss Attitude
