Kansas State RACES Officer – Jim KCØNYK

As we learned the last week of April, severe weather can become deadly at the drop of a hat! Tornadoes are unpredictable and extremely dangerous. Although we were not required by KDEM in the response this time I want to thank the 15 operators I contacted to stand by in case we were called up to assist our state. I also want to commend those who live or have family in the Baxter Springs and Galena areas for keeping your state officer apprised of the situation all the way. It was our pleasure to be able to handle some of the H&W traffic into and out of the affected areas in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi and North Carolina the past several days.

OK, other news! The Kansas State RACES Team has a call sign, WX0KR, which will be used during those situations such as drills, exercises or actual operations. We will be

setting up an Echo Link station as well and will get that node number out as soon as possible. For May's nets we are going to change things up a bit and have KC0MIA Node 62538 running the Echo Link station for nets andeither KC0NYK or KB0SQQ operating as WX0KR will handle the HF nets on 14.320 MHz USB. This is in response to those who have suggested using 20 meters for the net during the summer period. We will have a second HF station monitoring the old HF frequency of 3.950 MHz LSB for those who do not see the notice on Larry's List, the Kansas RACES Yahoo Group, or the Facebook Kansas RACES page.Nets will continue to operate on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Thursday of each month as is our normal practice. In cases ofnotification by any public means of SEVERE THUDERSTORM WARNING or TORNADO WARNINGS coming from the NWS or NSSL sources please monitor 14.320 MHz and 3.950 MHz for any activation or other information we need to pass on. We will attempt to activate the Echolink node as well. Please remember that all RACES operators are REQUIRED to only operate within their license grants and must use their FCC call signs as per the rules. The only exception will be for those operators who are authorized to use the Kansas State RACES call sign.

Sherry, KB0SQQ, John, KC0MIA and myself KC0NYK were very happy to meet the 100 or so hams who stopped by the RACES booth at the Ararat HamBash in Kansas City, MO on April 19th. We have plans to have abooth set up at the Kansas State Convention in Salina, the Joplin [MO] Hamfest and at the Kansas State Fair on Preparedness Day which will be Sept. 8th. Anyone who is interested in helping out with these events please contact me at [email protected], especially at the Kansas State Fair as we are planning to have multiple stations set up to show the public our capabilities. We also plan to have a RACES meeting at the Kansas Preparedness Conference. I will get more information out on this as soon as KDEM gives it to me.

Field Day is coming up. We are planning a short operational drill on Saturday morning at 1100 hours CDT as a round robin tune up for our teams. Our HQ group will be set up at Howard Lake, near Howard, KS and everyonewill be very welcome to join us. We are listed as the Elk County Amateur Radio Society on the ARRL site so youcan plan on how to find us easily as well as the talk in frequency. We plan to have several transmitters going on pure solar power so this will be a fun weekend and a chance to learn some more about using alternative power. Our grill master again this year will be Bill KC0QMX and anyone who has tasted his work can attest to the excellence. The only issue we had last year was prying Bill off of 20 meters to cook! We will also be holding a VE session on Saturday morning at 0900 hours CDT for those who want to take any class of license exams.

The Cabin Fever Bike Ride!

<http://www.wam-sag-man.org/cabinfeverchallenge.php>

Larry,

Could you pass along this on your list. Any hams in the Topeka-Manhattan area who might be able to help out would be welcome.

The Manhattan Areas Amateur Radio Society have been solicited once again for the Cabin Fever Bike ride for this year. The ride begins 8am, April 12th from Wamego West Elementary. Typically, we're done by about 1pm onthe long route.

If at all possible, please volunteer your time to help this community event. Let me know how you'd like to participate.

There are three routes: 14mi, 36mi and 59mi. The good news is, all share essentially the same route, and all areout-and-back, which will make coverage simpler. Essentially, the route runs from the school in Wamego, south on Hwy 99, East on Zeandale Road, and then down McDowell Creek Rd to I-70.

Turnaround points: 14mi - Waubunsee36mi - Zeandale Rd & K177 (just outside Manhattan)59mi - McDowell Creek Road & I-70

I'm still waiting to hear where all the SAG points are, but I'm assuming at least at the turnaround points.

Given that the bulk of the route is south and west of Wamego, we will be using our club repeater in Manhattan, KS0MAN, 147.255 MHz, -, 88.5 . We need volunteers for mobile coverage (ideally with bike transport ability) on the routes, and if we have enough, volunteers at the SAGs.

For those interested in detail, here's the maps I have presently for the routes.

<http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/361257729> 14 mile <http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/361256731> 36 mile <http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/361254475> 59 mile

Again, please contact Jim Foster, KD0NQQ at <[email protected]> if you can help. Thank you.

u From Cecil NØCY in WyomingThis video link is fresh (for the public). It was made just six weeks ago in the Atlantic, just off Newport News (Hampton Roads), Virginia. These are the latest sea trials of the F-35B “V / STOL” Fighters on the USS Wasp. They were very successful, with 74 VLs and STOs in a 3-week period. The aircraft is also stealth, and super-sonic. The media and the program critics had predicted that we would burn holes in the deck and wash sailors overboard. Neither happened. You will notice a sailor standing on the bow of the ship as the jet rotates. Thatwas an intentional part of the sea trials. No catapult...no hook. It's a new world out there! The shape and scope of warfare worldwide just changed. Click your mouse here: F-35 B [“V / STOL” is “Vertical / Standard Take-Off and Landing.”] http://www.youtube.com/embed/Ki86x1WKPmE

u [Android users: I have a question for you at the bottom of this email.]

Last week a link was sent out on Larry's List discussing 5 iPhone apps in honor of world amateur radio day. I have several amateur radio apps on my iPhone and am curious what apps other iPhone-carrying HAMs are using, what they think of them, and what they recommend getting/avoiding. To get the conversation started, this is what I use on my iPhone:

Echolink: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/echolink/id350688562?mt=8Free. Somewhat limited as an iPhone app (can't continue to run in the background while you check your email or reply to a text message) but performs the basic function of receive and transmit via Echolink.

Morse Code -- https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/morse-code-alphabet-soundboard/id316223317?mt=8$0.99. After having been away from amateur radio for well over a decade, this app was very handy for re-learning/refreshing my morse code skills (and makes for a fun game with a 4 year old: they hit a letter and I saythe name of the letter... and they don't tire of sound-producing "games" like this!).

Ham Radio Reference -- https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ham-radio-reference/id521128828?mt=8$0.99. Q-codes, band plans, electronic formulae, RST system, etc, etc, etc. So much info it's a steal at only 99 cents in my opinion. Yes, you can find all of this info elsewhere for free, but having it all in one place and not needing to download it is very handy, especially when you're 100 miles outside of coverage (or on I-70 in western Kansas if you're a Sprint customer).

Morse Decoder -- https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/morsedecp/id498227063?mt=8$2.99. Decodes and encodes Morse. Getting this was an impulse buy; I wanted to see if I could get good copy on QSOs that were going much, much faster than my ability to copy without digital assistance. Giving a review about this app's ability to decode when held to the speaker of a Kenwood F6A (with a 100' random wire antenna) wouldn't really be fair; I'm sure it would perform as expected if used with a radio that has a proper CWfilter in it.

iRTTY -- https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/irtty/id357007268?mt=8$2.99. Encodes and decodes RTTY. I haven't used this much but it worked well the few times I did use it.

Packet Pad -- https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/packet-pad/id385609173?mt=8$2.99. Decodes packet radio transmission. I use this from time to time -- just holding the mic of my phone up to my HT's speaker -- reading the APRS data flying around on 144.39Mhz.

Elmer Extra -- https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/elmer-extra/id302731419?mt=8$2.99. Extra class test trainer. I haven't studied enough so it kicks my butt, but that's my problem, not a problem with the app.

Maidenhead Grid Locator -- apparently the app I have on my phone is no longer in the app store. This 99 cent app seems to have the same (or more?) features though: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/maidenhead/id327442065?mt=8

I also have an APRS app -- https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iaprs/id314705586?mt=8 -- but either I don't know how to use it or it's no good. It's possible I just don't know how to use APRS and that's why I'm not getting anything from it for now. I'm also interested to know if anyone is connecting their iPhone or iPad to a Yaesu FT-817ND for PSK-31 or other digital mode communications (this pairing seems like a natural to me). I'm also curious to know if there is even one amateur-band-capable radio which can link with a smart phone via Bluetooth (again, for things like packet radio, PKS-31, etc).

For the Android users (if you're still reading): I am curious to know what you all use and what versions of Android are supported by those apps. While I will never switch from iPhone to Android for my phone I am considering getting something like a Nexus 7 or Galaxy Note 7 and the array amateur radio apps will be part of the overall consideration between getting an Android tablet versus an iPad mini or Kindle Fire.

u Today, most quality LED light bulbs will produce light that the human eye perceives the same as incandescentand halogen. However, if an LED bulb is connected to a standard dimmer that similarity ends. Yes, LED replacement bulbs will dim when controlled by “phase-cut” dimmers that are found in most homes and businesses. But, when you dim an LED bulb, the first thing you notice is that the familiar warming color of light we get with dimmed incandescent and halogen does not happen. Most LEDs retain the same color temperature throughout the dimming cycle. For home dining rooms, restaurants and other mood light applications, this inability to produce dim warm light is unacceptable. Manufacturers are starting to respond. One example is the Sylvania Ultra SE LED bulb family. These LED bulbs shift from 3000K to 2000K - bright white light to warm and cozy - as they are dimmed down to 10% illumination. They also provide excellent color consistency. Topbulb offers these new LED bulbs. View them here.

u This is pretty cool ~ Find your first car or the one you drove to high school or college; hopefully your car brochure is available. This has to be one of the neatest web sites whether you have gasoline in your veins or not. This is a website featuring the original factory brochures for nearly every American car you have ever owned. Pick the manufacturer, the year and the model. http:// www.lov2xlr8.no/broch1.html Phyllis KA7FIT

Something to Ponder.>>>>>>> A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had >>>>>>> admired a beautiful sports car in a dealers showroom, and knowing his father >>>>>>> could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.>>>>>>>>>>>>>> As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had >>>>>>> purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called >>>>>>> him into his private study, told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, >>>>>>> and how much he loved him. He handed him a beautifully wrapped gift box.>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a >>>>>>> lovely, leather-bound Bible, with his name embossed in gold.>>>>>>> Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said,"With all your money you >>>>>>> give me a Bible?" He stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible behind.>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a >>>>>>> beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old. He >>>>>>> thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since that graduation >>>>>>> day. But before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him >>>>>>> his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to

>>>>>>> him. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.>>>>>>>>>>>>>> When he arrived at his father's house, sadness and regret filled his heart. He >>>>>>> began to search through his father's important documents and saw the Bible, >>>>>>> new, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began >>>>>>> to turn the pages. His father had carefully underlined a verse, Matt 7:11, "And >>>>>>> if ye, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more >>>>>>> shall your Heavenly Father which is in Heaven, given to those who ask Him?">>>>>>>>>>>>>> As he read those words, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. u Older people do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe.

Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full up, so too do humans take longer to access information, it has been suggested.

Researchers say this slowing down it is not the same as cognitive decline. “The human brain works slower in oldage,” said Dr. Michael Ramscar, “but only because we have stored more information over time.

“The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more.”

SO THERE! We Are All Brilliant!
