HA - HAHOW THE INTERNET STARTED:

In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot.

And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg.

Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com.

And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?"

And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?"

And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling

Page 11: Kansas Amateur Radio › kar › Jan_17_KAR.pdf · 2017-01-15 · “KAR” Kansas Amateur Radio “KAR” January 2017 newsletter w0oyh@arrl.net Hi gang, You will never guess who

you who hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success.

Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent.

To prevent neighboring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew To The People (HTTP).

And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS.

And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. And indeed did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks.

And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others." And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as it came to be known.

He said, "We need a name that reflects what we are."

And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators." "YAHOO," said Abraham.

And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com.

Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around the countryside. It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE).

That is how it all began...

“I’ve heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype Norwegian blonde women that way? What does the colour of a woman’s hair have to do with her worth as a human being? Its men like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people. Its people like you that make others think that all blondes are dumb! You and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general, pathetically all in the name of humor!" The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, and the blonde interrupts yelling:

Tom's Key Strokes - WØEAJDenver, Co. Displaced Kansas Neighbor

and very gud friend.!***

[email protected]

u Straight Key Night REMEMBER KIDS... TOMORROW ISN'T CALLED "AMATEUR NIGHT" FOR NOTHING... Not only will the idiots be out trying to destroy themselves, BUT... it's "Straight Key Night" on the ham bands. If you haven't bothered with your ol' straight key for a while (or if you HAVE), plug it into that old DX-40 Heathkit, or EICO 723... or maybe a Johnson Ranger or Valiant, and pretend you're a NOVICE again. You don't HAVE TO use an old rig, but you DO have to use a straight key... no bugs, keyers, or keyboards, please. Tom Dailey - WØ[email protected]

u Now, here's an interesting question, sure to evoke some responses... some very positive; others quite negative, but hey - you knew that, 'cause YOU have an opinion already, huh? Yes, it's true - I love "glow in thedark" stuff, and even a few pieces of early solid-state as well (a crystal set is solid-state, right?). I guess my fascination with old radios comes from being a kid, during the heyday of them. Yes, being a kid now is pretty cool too, what with Raspberri Pi projects, Beaglebone Black before that, and a whole plethora of neat digital modes and opportunities that we never had (even though CW was the FIRST "digital" mode). Yep, but it's those back-breaking receivers & transmitters, producing LOTS of caloric energy, that still hold a glimmer of "gee whiz" for me, to this day.

See, In those early daze [sic], my friend Biff (he didn't LOOK like a Biff, trust me) and I would get on the bus, and ride it downtown (forbidden territory) to 10th. & McGee, there to behold the "Magic Castle", wherein lay mysteries within heavy steel boxes, fraught with spirits who lived within the glowing glass envelopes, within which, "signals" made their way to the output. The place was known as Burstein-Applebee, and interestingly enough, I'd work for them in later years. OHHHHhh, the wooden floors would sing to us, as we'd walk upon them, the walls and cabinets full of electronic bits and pieces, books of every variety, catalogs FREE for the asking - a.k.a. "DreamSheet", and further back, the Throne Room... yes, the HAM SHACK. Oh, what glorious things were on THOSE shelves. Rich offerings from Hallicrafters, National, Hammarlund, Gonset, EF Johnson, Harvey-Wells, Collins, and more affordable offerings on occasion, like Heath, EICO, and Knight. The room had a rich aroma of "burned tube dirt", capacitor wax, warm bakelite, and wire insulation mixed with freshly baked wrinkle paint, which for some reason... ALWAYS smelled better than baked enamel, it seemed. Oh, but I couldonly gaze lovingly, salivate into my mental drool-cup, and perhaps... on occasion... would beg with enough conviction, that they'd loan me a pair of earphones [cans] (we didn't call 'em "headphones" back then), and I would be allowed to LISTEN to some of those delicious receivers (if you produced a license of GENERAL, ADVANCED, or EXTRA, you could use whatever the current station was). Those guys weren't dumb - they KNEW that when you finally got your ticket, you would come BACK to the Magic Castle to buy your stuff (if you'dmade enough from paper-routes, lawn-mowing (with a push mower), throwing hay, shoveling corn or wheat, or selling bottles... anything to make some money for RADIO STUFF.

So yeah - turning on a vintage radio DOES bring back those great memories of Biff and I (he wasn't nearly as interested as I was - he just knew the bus routes better), and the occasional visit to a "real" ham's shack when Iwas a kid, impressionable as heck, and yearning for just a "chance" to get my very own NOVICE station, with anFCC issued callsign and everything. Like just today - I have several "80 percent" projects waiting... they're 80

Page 15: Kansas Amateur Radio › kar › Jan_17_KAR.pdf · 2017-01-15 · “KAR” Kansas Amateur Radio “KAR” January 2017 newsletter w0oyh@arrl.net Hi gang, You will never guess who

percent done, and I just haven't gotten parts or enthusiasm enough to finish 'em... so I decided to chance getting a hernia, and settled on moving the Hallicrafters SX-28 "Super Skyrider" into the shop. I got it a few months back, it's partially recapped (the seller graciously left the HARD TO GET TO ones in there for me - nice of him, eh?) and DOES work, so after about a 40 minute warmup - hey, you don't wanna' rush these things, youknow - I set the Main Tuning then Bandspread on what looked like 7.0475 mHz, and shazzam... there was W1AW code practice, just like it was supposed to be. Sure, I could have turned on the ICOM IC-756 ProII, theKenwood TS-940S/AT (my stepdad's), or even my bench receiver, a Kenwood TS-430S, but the '28 just called my name. I've checked up on the serial number, and verified that this particular one, left the factory in DECEMBER OF 1941... it's a "War Baby", and oh if it could talk. Why, it's two years older than ME (No smart remarks, KØXM), and just think... here's a radio that's ¾ of a Century old, and it's still capable of doing nearlyEXACTLY what your brand new "Super FuzzFire Deluxe", costing the price of what WAS a new house (back whenthis SX-28 was built) can do. Oh, "no digital readout" you say... Mon Dieu - NOT TRUE says me.. There are 5 fingers (digits, if you will) on your tuning hand, and by rotating the "readout" WITH those fingers, plus some interpolation of the dial markings, you've just produced a "digital readout" (did you know you could count up to 31 on one hand, and not repeat any sequence of the digits?). On that very subject, is why the National HRO receivers were created - sure, you had to refer to a chart to determine your frequency (the dial went from 0 to 500), but you could REPEAT the exact setting, which was simply not always possible with all those "other" receivers... (that's why the British chose the National HRO Senior receiver, for use at Wadden Hill & Bletchley Park for communication intercept of ENIGMA traffic!) The SX-28 has TWO dials, as did most "high end" receivers, so you just had to get "good" with fingering [sic] out the dial calibration.

SO, why put all that work and money into a radio that's CLEARLY not as hot as a new one? I mean, new stuff has Noise Blankers (not just "limiters" that distort the audio), and Digital Signal Processing, and memories, so you can switch back and forth with only the touch of a 'digit' (snuck that one in, didn't I?). Transmitters don't even need to be tuned up anymore - just plug n' play... Oh, you might have some horrid "non resonant on any band" antenna, so you had to buy a "tuner" (it's a transmitter fooler - not an antenna "tuner"), so yeah, that might actually have knobs and a meter you have to deal with, but nope... new stuff is QUICKER and SIMPLER... but after you've developed eyestrain and a sore back from replacing 39 wax & foil capacitors, that you had to wrench out with a BIG iron, then put new ones in, replete with trying to get all those lead wires into a tiny terminal strip hole... then sit back, bring it up s-l-o-w-l-y on a variac, and suddenly it comes alive... the tubes glow orange, the background static comes up in volume, and you hear the drifting local oscillator and BFO "swing" into the warmup, and like an old Boris Karloff movie... you scream out with joy...

"IT'S ALIVE... IT'S ALIVE"

and then... God's in His heaven... all's right with the World... and you're 13 years old again.

dit dit -= Tom

u Happened to get this from the Hallicrafters reflector - some VERY BEAUTIFUL radios in excellent shape. Prices are reasonable, too.

KE7ASK Radio Collection Email: [email protected]

Below you will find a list of radios with pricing. I also have a PDF file showing several photos of these items. If you're interested in any of these, please contact me via email and I will get back to you immediately.

I will also accept a reasonable cash offer for the entire lot. I have priced these items to sell however, due to a move, I am motivated to provide someone with a wonderful collection for a fair cash price --- no trades. Thank you.
