Kalgoorlie-BoulderKalgoorlie-Boulder offers a unique holiday experience for tourists, with an evolving history and cosmopolitan lifestyle contrasted with outback adventures abundant in flora and fauna.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a sophisticated city boasting a bustling, thriving community. It is home to more than 30,000 residents, and is the gold mining centre of Australia as well as a popular tourist destination.

There is no end to the riches in the region, from the exploits of early prospectors in pursuit of gold captured by the interpretive self-drive Golden Quest Discovery Trail, to the tours down into the Super Pit.

The environment in Kalgoorlie-Boulder is unique, and boasts a number of parks and nature areas such as the picturesque Hammond Park and Karlkurla Bushland Reserve.

The Audio Walking Tour, which is available from the visitor centre, offers a self-guided walk around Kalgoorlie’s CBD so visitors can learn about the rich history. The Boulder CBD has some real gems such as the Loopline Museum Information Centre. The centre showcases historical items and information about what used to be one of the busiest railways in Australia.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) was founded in the Goldfields region in 1937 and has remained an icon in the area ever since. Today, visitors can call by and learn more about its services.

For more information, please visit www.kalgoorlietourism.com. Alternatively, drop into the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Visitor Centre at 316 Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie.

HistoryKalgoorlie-Boulder’s rich history is entrenched in the Gold Rush era dating back to the late 1800s.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder was established as the result of three Irishmen serendipitously discovering alluvial gold nuggets when they paused to change a horse shoe. That fateful day back in 1893 set the wheels in motion for the burgeoning Gold Rush. The Gold Rush in the region saw thousands of gold diggers arrive from all around the world. Unfortunately, many perished during this period due to the difficult outback conditions. Those who did strike gold influenced the growth of the region, which would resound for years to come.In 1903, engineer Charles Yelverton O’Connor innovated a vital piece of infrastructure, which saw the construction of a fresh water pipeline from Mundaring near Perth. Today, the pipeline continues to service the Kalgoorlie-Boulder community. For history buffs keen to unearth some of the fascinating history that underpins this region, be sure to check out the following:• City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s History and

Heritage Unit

• Eastern Goldfields Historical Society

• Golden Quest Discovery Trail

• Kalgoorlie Boulder Cemetery

BoulderBoulder is rich in historical attractions and boasts a popular monthly market that extends along Burt Street.

Recently the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder received $3.15 million to upgrade Burt Street’s facade in a fashion reminiscent of the early 1900s. The new look Burt Street will provide shoppers with an experience par excellence, filled with character and ambience. Make sure you explore the art and craft shops along Burt Street, and indulge your sweet tooth at The Little Boulder Sweet Shop. The Super Pit Shop is a must-do for visitors to the region who want to complete their Super Pit experience. The shop offers merchandise, memorabilia and information on the Super Pit, and is open weekdays between 9am and 4pm and on market days between 9:30am and 12.30pm.Located on the corner of Burt and Lane Streets, the Miners Monument was built in honour of all miners - past, future and present. The monument represents a miner utilising an air leg drill. If you’re around during the third Sunday of the month, treat yourself to some regional goods at the Boulder Market Day. Located on Burt Street, the market runs from 9am to 1pm and businesses open up their doors to offer an array of goods.

Page 9: Kalgoorlie-Boulder Area Information Guide

Golden WaterOpen a tap in Kalgoorlie-Boulder and chances are you’ll be using water from the world’s longest freshwater pipeline.

Called a “scheme of madness” when first proposed in 1895, today the Goldfields water supply pipeline is more likely to be described as a “lifeline”. You can see the water arriving at Mt Charlotte, 560 kms away from where it started its journey about 10 days earlier in the Perth Hills. A site on the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail, Mt Charlotte - at the eastern end of Hannan Street, offers scenic views of the city. You can follow the drive trail from Kalgoorlie to the water’s source, Mundaring Weir, visiting 25 historic and scenic sites in WA’s Golden Outback along the way. The trail takes you to places associated with obtaining water in WA’s arid interior, from early wells and rock catchments to the pipeline-specific.Some Golden Pipeline sites are accessible on day drips from Kalgoorlie. Just east of Coolgardie, photographs displayed at prospector Jack Carin’s humble home show him “dryblowing” to extract gold without water. In contrast, Warden Finnerty’s Residence, home to the first warden in Coolgardie, is open to the public and located alongside the rockhole at which prospectors stopped in September 1892 and found gold.

Golden Quest

Discovery Trail For those who enjoy self-drive adventures, the fabulous Golden Quest Discovery Trail - a 965 kilometre adventure drive in one of the world’s most famous gold producing regions - is an ideal activity for tourists.

The Golden Quest Discovery Trail is a popular tourist and caravanning attraction for the WA Goldfields. This terrific trail runs from Coolgardie in the south to Laverton in the north and passes many sites that are worth taking the time to explore. Trace the steps of some of Australia’s greatest explorers, see the once famous Poseidon Nickel Mine at Windarra and the nickel mine at Murrin Murrin. Visit the historic precinct of Gwalia near Leonora and the house commissioned by Herbert Hoover, 31st President of the United States, and spend some time in the extraordinary atmosphere at Lake Ballard near Menzies. The Golden Quest Discovery Trail can be enjoyed in parts or as a whole. For more information, please visit www.goldenquesttrail.com.

The Super PitSome interesting facts about the Super Pit:• The Super Pit, one of Australia’s largest open

cut gold mines, was established in 1989 and was the brainchild of Alan Bond.

• The Super Pit is approximately 3.6kms long, 1.5kms wide and 500m deep. The approved long term pit development will see the Super Pit grow to be approximately 3.6kms long, 1.6kms wide and approximately 600m in depth.

• Approximately 850,000 ounces of gold is produced annually from the Super Pit and the underground operation at Mt Charlotte.

• The Super Pit is mined daily, 24 hours around the clock.

• On average it takes around 45 minutes for a truck to get loaded, haul out of the pit, dump its load and return to the shovel.

• The average haul speed of a truck fully loaded is 12.5km/h.

• Most of the gold mined in the Super Pit occurs within ore loads formed by ancient shears in a rock unit called the Golden Mile Dolerite.

• It is expected that KCGM will finish mining the Super Pit in 2029.
