Committee Business:

The committee wishes to do something about the current canteen situation, commencing as soon as practical; due to the recent reports of ill health of Malcolm Retallack. This would involve thanking Malcolm for his time spent and retiring him from Canteen Manager. Geoff Doughty has stepped up and offered to man the canteen on Saturdays and Eric Gooch has offered to man the canteen on Sundays.

General Business:

Bill Davies from AWA has been in touch. There are a couple of AWA Delegate vacancies on a couple of the MAAA Sub Committees, being Scale and Rocketry. If anyone is interested in filling these vacancies please let Tim Watson know who will pass the information on to Bill Davies.

This year sees Bill Ten-Broeke turning 90. The Committee wishes to put forward that Bill be given a Life Membership. An article will be going into Slipstream to commemorate this event.

Final quote from Just Rural has been submitted. The total cost for the complete works is $72000. Geoff Doughty is preparing a submission to AWA for the purpose of obtaining $60000 over 15 years. This will include repayments of $4320 per annum.

Geoff Doughty has prepared a draft loan application to be submitted to the MAAA within the next week or so. At the same time Geoff will arrange for the MAAA to formally discharge the old mortgage (that has been subsequently paid off) from the KAMS certificate of title. It is believed that the duplicate Certificate of Title for KAMS field is being held at Westpac Bank branch in Kalamunda.

Ian Johnson is following up with the re-development of the KAMS website. At this stage the cost will be around $2500 plus yearly hosting fees. The first years hosting will be free, after that the ongoing cost will be $100 per annum. The website will be available for a nominated representative from each SIG so that they can update their own pages.

Members are reminded that nominations are coming up for those wanting to volunteer for next years KAMS committee. There are a number of positions that will be available.

Warbirds is only six weeks away – so get your models ready! More star pickets are needed to support

the bunting for crowd control. Frank Jensen will arrange to purchase some more. Members are reminded that families and children are not permitted in the pits at any time; this also means for Warbirds. Mark Crawford and Graeme Hewitt will be performing a fly past on the day.

BY-LAW OF THE MONTH

3.6 NOISE LEVELS The KAMS noise emission standard for all piston engine and/or propeller and/or ducted fan driven aircraft is 80DB on an A weighted scale, measured at 4 points, 7 Meters distant from the emission source. The measuring device will be mounted on a tripod 1.2M above the ground and testing carried out in the circle marked in the center of the flying surface. The Committee will require all members and guests to prove compliance to the standard by submitting a signed certification form to be provided. A signed certification form will be required to be kept for each aircraft that a member or guest wishes to fly. If this signed form cannot be produced when requested by an executive committee member or committee approved testing officer, the aircraft shall be grounded until such time as the form can be produced OR the aircraft is tested/retested and certified as compliant by the executive committee or committee approved testing officer. Aircraft must be re-tested and certified after any modifications/changes to the engine(s), propeller(s), spinner(s), engine mount(s), exhaust system(s), induction or cowling(s). Members may be asked by the Executive Committee or committee approved testing officer to land and have their aircraft noise tested using the approved KAMS testing procedure and equipment (detailed above) at any time. Aircraft that do not comply with the approved standard will be grounded until such time as they can pass the testing procedure as applied by the executive

2014 Soaring WA Glider Rally

With a change in dates this year bringing the Soaring WA annual glider rally forward a

o th it was e pe ted that we ight e hit with ery hot weather whi h is the or ’ in mid February in Perth WA. The week leading up to the rally also indicated it would

be hot and windy with temps of 35c+. But yet again the soaring gods smiled on us

with one of the best soaring days we had had all summer. Rally CD Nigel Molyneux as

usual was there early to get things going, but only just. Brian Mitchell

pulled into the carpark hot on his heels dead on the stroke of 7am as was

soon followed with a steady stream of flyers both regular and new. The

hot 20knt Easterly breeze forecasted never eventuated and with the

temp hovering around 28-30c we knew we were in for a good day. Brian

inspite of having range issues with his Coracho F3B glider broke the ice as

the first in the air flying a variety of models all the while with a huge grin

o his fa e. This was Bria ’s first ti e at the rally and I do ’t thi k it will be his last.

After a quick pilots briefing at 9.00am and with 20+ pilots the skies were

soo full of odels ra gi g fro Radia foa ies to Ro a Pasz i ki’s new Let Models 7m ASH31 and everything in between. There has been a

steady growth in F3K Dlg over in the West and the Rally

played host to the DLG crew as the joined in and enjoyed

the day while showi g e eryo e what That Dis us stuff is all about. Leader of the F3K pack Simon Watts also brought

out his new X-Lite Dlg model for a little show and tell before

putting it through its paces. With very impressive launches

a d flight’s I thi k “i o a d the X-Lite will be a force to

contend with in the upcoming F3K events in WA.

As is normal at this event the stream of visitor throughout

the day got to see many forms of RC Gliding that the WA

crew regularly enjoy. At time in one corner the DLG boys

were spinning away like a herd of hurricanes while the

Scale boys aero towed and flew with an assortment

of Electric Hotliners and Thermal gliders, while at

the other end of the field the F3B & F3J winch boys

all put there models through their paces.

A ouple of Nota le Mentions :

Firstly, to ig Rod O’Neil for showi g up late, as usual and to Malcolm Woodbury for bringing

along his new 6.0m Phoenix Models K8B along for

certification and maiden flight but forgetting his

wing joiners and wing bolts! Better luck next time

Malcolm. To Roman Pasznicki as a recent defector of

sorts from the IMAC scene for not only bringing

alone his lovely ASH 31 but for converting his

Comparf Extra into a glider tug and taking over

tuggi g duties o the day after Nigel’s Pilatus Porter tug suffered damage in a crash landing after an

engine flame out. To Bruce Hunt who inspite of not

flying himself was trotting around assisting everyone

all day and taking photos of the fun.

A big mention goes out to Simon Watts who after

several good long flights with his 6m Let Models

ASH26 suffered a total system shutdown while the

models was at considerably height. This resulted in

the model diving in at speed with a sickening bang

about 1.5km from the field. Fortunately nobody or

property was damaged but the models was trashed.

After the odel was re o ered with Nigel’s trailer inspection showed the radio gear and batteries still

worked so it is suspected it was a Smart fly Power

Expander or the Battery regulator that may have

failed. As both units were destroyed in the crash and

could not be tested we will never know for sure.

Again after lunch the crew expected the local

Fre a tle Do tor sea breeze to kick in strong as

forecasted but were pleasantly surprised when this

did ’t happe . This ea t a y of the s aller models could continue to enjoy the great conditions

and even though the event officially ended at

4.00pm many continued to fly on. Proving how

dedicated they were to flying their favourite F3B

discipline, Mr F3B Tim Kullack, Don Tester and Nigel

Molyneux continued to winch their models all the

while tuning and practising for the upcoming WA

F3B open. The trio eventually called stumps at

7.00pm as the sun set on what had been a magnificent day.

Great turnout, huge range of models and disciplines on show both around the pits and

in the air and in the end both visitor and flyers all went hope happy, even Simon and

Nigel inspite of their damaged models.

Hope to see you all at our next Glider Fly-in & F3K Dlg Event on Easter Friday 18th

April

at the KAMS Field.

2014 AWA

“Aussie

Thermal”

State Champ’s

Excellent weather met competitors for the 2014 AWA Thermal championships as they assembled models and setup

their winches. Inspite of a lower than expected turnout, but with the welcome return of Gregg Voak and recent

convert from F3F Don Tester, the gang was quickly assembled into flight groups and the CD declared his intention

to go for a minimum of 8 rounds for the day which would allow competitors to drop their worst round score once a

minimum of 6 rounds had been completed.

The contest got underway after a few test and trimming flights and it

was quickly apparent the low winds and warm sun were making the

thermals fairly easy to find and work to good height. Interestingly

most of the field elected to fly F3B type models leaving just Tim

Kullack (3.8m Explorer) along with Les Stockley and Chris Barrenger

oth with “upra Pro’s a paig i g pure F3J odels. Most pilots made the required 10 minute time or very close to it in the first 4-5

rounds, with many of these rounds only being separated by a mere

second or two and the spot landing scores. With the large area

surrounding the field and the abundant lift travelling through each of

the early rounds was a mixture of pilots flying at all points of the compass, often at great height and distances from

ho e ase. I o e rou d Ti a d the E plorer was see to e tra elli g “outh for the wi ter while Nigel a d his Cyril was tra elli g North to Russia . Both odels ai tai ed o sidera le height for the duration of the heat and

after whistling high speed returns to the field it came down to a difference of a few seconds with Tim narrowly

winning yet another round with a perfect 10.00mintues with 100 landing points while Nigel missed out on 9.56 and

95 point landing.

With such an enthusiastic group the heats progressed rapidly and by

the time the group stopped for a quick lunch break and some

rehydration at 1.00pm, 5 of the 8 rounds had been completed. Around

.30p the Fre a tle Do tor sea breeze arrived and the thermals

became increasingly much harder to locate and work. Many flyers

were soon changing tactics, models and ballast in order to hunt for lift

further afield. Many however found themselves on the ground in just

3-4 minutes while others in the group managed to find something

useful and hang on to it long enough to make times. Some great low saves were witnessed with I think the most

notable being Simon Watts who looked to be on a long final at 20ft or so with 5 minutes to go, only to hit a thermal

and work it out to 500ft or so to fly out the round.

Round 7 saw the only mishap of the day when while Paul Marshall was

launching his Estrella F3B the V-tail elected to part company with the

rest of the model. This resulted in an unwanted coming together with

mother earth and a large amount of damage.

After 8 hard fought rounds it was fairly tight near the top with the F3J

machines taking the top 3 spots on the podium in front of the perusing

F3B odels. I the e d Mr F3B Ti Kullack proved he can fly a

thermal model too to put together a string of 1000pt rounds in the difficult afternoon conditions to take home the

victory over the chasing pack.

Well done to all and thanks for a great event and remember to start

practicing for next year, 1pt per 20cm landing tapes in use!

New boys' toy!!!

The AirCam is the greatest flying machine ever because it will allow you to do the sort

of flying you simply can’t do in any other aircraft.

It is a twin-engined ultra light which was designed to enable National Geographic to

investigate and photograph the top of the African jungle canopy at very close range.

It can fly 10 feet above the tree tops in safety, and it can, with no engine management

challenge, climb up and away on one engine.

Such ultra low-level exploration can not be done in twin-engined General Aviation

aircraft, ultra lights (or any other fixed wing aircraft) with the same level of assurance.

AirCam can easily and comfortably take off on one engine, and with both Rotax 912

engines turning, it will leap off terra firma in less than 30 metres and climb at 2,000 fpm

while burning as low as 4-5 gallons per hour at mid-range speeds and no more than 10

gph in higher range.

Compare that with any other aircraft!

2014 WA F3F State Open

Saturday 1st March 2014 a group of pilots gathered at the Albany

Model Aero Clu at arou d 9.00 a to dis uss the weeke d’s events. However due to the forecast N/E breeze the competition

was postponed until Sunday when the forecast was predicting a

good Southerly to come in before noon at around 10 to 15 knots.

As a result we decided to meet out at Turbine 10 ready for an

11.00am pilots briefing with the view to be underway by midday

on Sunday.

Many of the pilots headed off on Saturday to find locations to fly

the fickle N Easterly. A group of us first flew at The Isthmus

with a bit of DS'ing then around the corner flying at Salmon Holes

as the wind swung to Easterly during the afternoon then for the

later afternoon as the breeze further swung to ESE we ended up

at Marine Drive. Although the breeze was not strong we could fly

all day but at different locations.

Sunday however, turned out to be a good day for Turbine 10,

with the breeze starting out at about 8-10 knots SSW at 11.00am

and built gradually through the afternoon to a peak of 15-18kts

southerly by about 4.00pm. With good direction onto the slope,

anyone who knows this location will know that this is smooth and

ideal with good solid lift coming off the ridge allowing anyone

with nerve to fly as close to the ridge as possible for maximum lift

effect.

Fifteen pilots entered the competition with some new faces

eager at having a go at F3F for the first time. The pilots briefing

was held at 11.00am and by 12.00pm we were underway the first

round kicking off in 8-10 kts. The format was for two Rounds to

be flown back to back before landing. This is definitely a very

popular way of running the competition and allows us to get

through more rounds much easier. It also gives each pilot a bit

more flying time each flight so that they can settle into their

rhythm by their second round of that heat.

Round one saw some slow times as the breeze really had not

strengthened enough although smooth and a joy to fly in. Simon

Watts won the first round with 54.72 seconds and round two was

won by Paul Marshall with 51.96 seconds. The next four rounds were won by Paul and his Pitbull with 53.01, 49.39,

47.39 and 44.97 second times. By rounds five and six the breeze had increased gradually to around 10-12 kts. After

some good rounds under his belt and settling into the rhythm of things Gary Adams won round seven with 47.72

seconds flying his Fosa. Once again though, Paul won in round eight with 44.79 seconds. For rounds 9 and 10 the

breeze had built to 15-18kts southerly, very square onto the slope and still smooth conditions. Gary took the last

two rounds of the day, round nine with 42.87 and in round ten achieved a personal best time and fastest time of

the day to win round ten with 42.78 seconds.

After round ten we stopped the competition at 5.15pm which proved a

good decision as the breeze rapidly began to swing to the left of the slope

and began to die off towards 6.00pm.

Standout of the day was Lachlan Puls, aged 10, flying his little foam Bixler.

Lachlan had only been flying for a couple of months and was showing

some very good control with the plane always set on a straight and true

course along the slope, this eventually earned him a personal best of

101.36 seconds. At such a young age Lachlan has a huge future ahead in

RC and hopefully we will see him as a regular at the F3F competitions.

Ron Gereswell, also new to F3F and Albany local, flew his Sunbird around

the course all day enjoying the challenge of getting those turns right.

U fortu ately Ro ’s pla e did o e dow twi e duri g tur s o Base A, ut with little or no damage and was able to keep flying. Ron achieved a personal best

time of 68.28 seconds, hopefully Ron will be back to have a go at smashing this

time down.

Justin Grocoe also an Albany local gave the F3F a go for the first time flying a

Bixler. Justin has a good future ahead in RC also, with the slopes of Albany at his

door step. With encouragement from the CD and some coaching around the

course the first few times Justin was into the swing of F3F enjoying the event for

what it is, a really fun day at the slope with the atmosphere of being amongst all

the other pilots. Justin now has a personal best time to beat of 95.97 seconds.

Steve Revell from Albany flew his Sharp which looked good in the air. This plane

has been around for a long time but is still quite quick on the right

day. Steve managed a personal best time of 65.09 seconds and looks

set to beat that at the next F3F competition. Steve has lots of good

slopes to practice from in Albany and seems to have no shortage of

time to make use of them. Unfortunately Steve did damage the Sharp

on landing and had to switch planes. Steve will definitely be back for

more though as he is super keen on everything flying RC.

Steve Alcock flew a T Bird under Rick Leonhardt’s guidance. It looks

like Steve is finding some feel for the F3F, Steve pulled off a personal

best of 65.85 seconds in the smooth conditions early in the day. Rick

flew a Ceres Lift and also found himself with a personal best of 47.51

seconds. Rick seems to be getting

a handle on flying the larger plane as he used to own the Sharp which Steve Revell now has.

Ross Cant is one of the regulars to the WA F3F State Open. Ross flew his

Ellipse around the course happily improving his times during the day

and enjoying flying at Turbine 10. Glen Twaddle flew his Typhoon after

a mishap launching his new Needle. Hopefully Glen will have the Needle

up and running again soon after the minor damage to the wing tip.

Grant Andrews flew a Ceres for the day but wasn't able to take

advantage of the smooth conditions and kept losing his line. With

practice I am sure that would change but living in Northam it is difficult

to get to the nearest slope regularly.

The rivalry duo, Brian Mitchell and Andrew Muller, flew well through the day with each trying to outdo the other

round for round. This saga has been going on ever since they have taken up F3F and doesn't look like ending

anytime soon. Brian did have the upper hand in round eight when his hot looking Willow flew to a 47.09. I heard

Brian say "he will never beat that, hahahaha!" Spoke too soon Brian! In round 10, last round of the day, Andrew

flew his Predator to an almost new personal best of 45.26 seconds. Andrew was doing back flips!!

Simon Watts flew his Pitbull and scored one round win but was able to improve times right through the day and

only missed out on a couple more round wins by close margins. Don Tester also flying a Pitbull did not achieve any

round wins but was only a whisker off the pace each time and flew consistently all day, the plane was looking very

fast and hard to beat. Gary Adams flew a Fosa and again looked fast and achieved three round wins as well as the

fastest time of the day but was not consistent enough in the rest of the rounds. More time at the slope Gary!

Well done everyone for pitching in and helping out to run the event. It was definitely another successful F3F event,

this being the 42nd year since this particular event, the WA F3F

State Open, started. Thank you to Rhoda for spending her time

sitting in the timing chair and helping to record results. Also thank

you Simon for your time and effort put into the wireless timing

equipment without which the event would not run as smoothly.
