Teen Dating Violence Awareness
Gains a Month
In 2006, the first-everNational Teen DatingViolence Awareness Weekwas held, reflecting a newnationwide initiative toincrease public awarenessand education of theprevalence of teen datingviolence among our nation'steens. On December 11,2008, the Senate approvedS. Res. 710 by unanimousconsent, which declares theweek of February 2 - 6,2009, "National Teen DatingViolence Awareness andPrevention Week."
In 2010, United StatesSenator Mike Crapo-R,
joined with the Departmentof Justice to promote aresolution in the Senatedesignating the month ofFebruary, not just oneweek, as Teen DatingViolence Awareness andPrevention Month. The
Senate passed thatresolution unanimously, making February 2011 thefirst ever Teen DatingViolence Awareness andPrevention Month.
Kaity’s Way, as well asmany organizations whoseprimary focus is childwelfare, have a number of
events planned throughoutthe inaugural month.
Ironwood High School inGlendale, AZ, will host Live It!, a dance concert to raiseawareness about thestruggles of domesticviolence victims and similarconcerns. In suite, Kaity’sWay will have an exhibittable at the event.
Kaity’s Way will travel toAjo, AZ February 7th through 9
thspeaking at
various events from thelocal Ajo High Schoolstudents to presentingKaity’s Law & story topatrons of the Ajo Library.
Kaity's Way will also shareKaity's Story with thestudents of three separateclasses at Nogales HighSchool in Nogales, AZFebruary 15,2011. The
presentation arrangementswere coordinated by SandraAnguiano of MariposaCommunity Health Center inconjunction with Mrs.Susana Abreu, a teacher atNogales High School.
The Teen Dating ViolenceAwareness and PreventionInitiative was spearheaded
by teenagers across thenation who chose to take astand and put a stop to teendating violence. Initiated in2004 by the American BarAssociation and nowsupported by over fiftynational, state and localorganizations, the call toend teen dating violencehas been formallyrecognized in the Senate in2006, 2007, 2008 and now,2009.
Each year, the Senate hasdeclared the first full weekin February "National TeenDating Violence Awarenessand Prevention Week." Thecrime of teen datingviolence, including physical, emotional and sexualassault, and harassment viatexting, email or InstantMessaging is a cruel realityfor many Americanteenagers--a reality of
which many parents areunaware.
Kaity’s Way is ecstatic thatTeen Dating Violence isgaining the necessaryawareness and supportthrough legislation to helpput an end to violence.
