Dargaville High School Cape Brett Adventure

On 27 October, 17 students from our Sport and Recreation class along with 4 adults left for their Cape Brett adventure. Some of the group embarked on the massive 20 km tramp from Rawhiti through to the hut on the Cape Brett Peninsula. The rest of the party took a water taxi to Deep Water Cove and then tramped in the last 8 kms.

The following day the whole party took part in a fishing competition from dawn until 8:30pm. Joseph Robinson landed the biggest snapper among the students with Mr Raeli landing a 5lb snapper and Mr Barnes landing a brace of 8lb snapper. Some of the students took to the water to gather kina and paua and to swim with the seals. By the evening the students had experienced an exhilarating day, but there were some very tired bodies.

Students had a number of challenges to choose from the next day. These included fear factor, endurance challenge and problem solving. Activities included running a demanding steeple chase to the lighthouse, memorising all the facts about the Lighthouse history and recalling them they returned. Some students took

on other challenges, including scaling one of the summits on the island in front of the Hut. Time for dinner, clean up and preparing for the return tramp the next day.

The return was bitter sweet as the tramp out is physically very challenging and no one wants to leave as they are leaving paradise, but we all need

a bath and a good night’s sleep in our own bed.

So many of the students helped each other out, helping carry luggage, and sharing expertise with each other that everyone had an experience that they will never forget.

I would like to thank Paul Barnes, Tui Raeli and my father for being such absolute stars, helping out the students and going beyond the call of duty to make sure everyone had a great time.

Mangawhai resident and former chairman of Northland Regional Council, Mark Farnsworth, is welcoming a new career change. The experienced Resource Management Act practitioner has been appointed to the Board of Inquiry for NZ King Salmon Company Limited’s proposal to eight new farming sites in the Marlborough Sounds.

The proposal was sent directly to the independent board, under the Government’s nationally signifi cant proposal process with the Environmental Protection Authority, Minister of Conservation, Kate Wilkinson, and Environment Minister, Nick Smith.

“It’s a real honour,” says Mark. “You don’t get to apply for these positions. They look at the skill base of available people and literally tap you on the shoulder.

“The job to sort out King Salmon’s consent applications and plan change applications is a very big one. It’s projected that the hearing will take fi ve weeks, so there will be a fair bit of travel in it and quite a bit of work.”

Mark has extensive experience in the Local Government sector and has just completed eighteen years at Northland Regional Council. For his last three terms at NRC, Mark was the chairman and he also chaired the Hearing Committee for six years.

“Over the years I’ve developed an expertise in coastal marine hearings and when I was on the regional council, I did a number of aquaculture applications. I approved some and turned others down, so no-one can say that I’m one way inclined or the other. Hopefully they will get a fair hearing.

“I haven’t worked with any of the others on the panel before and that’s exciting — it’s a whole new range of people to interface with. This is a welcome change and it will take quite a bit of my time but I’ll give it the commitment it requires.”

A welcome change

“We have undertaken a wide-ranging and thorough search to fi nd the right person for this job at a critical time.

Steve is an experienced and capable executive who is held in high regard across the local government sector.

He also has extensive experience in managing complex change in local government, health and the broader public sector.

We feel fortunate to have been able to attract such a high calibre chief executive and we are absolutely sure he is up to the challenges of leading the organisation forward as we grapple with the fi nancial and other challenges that face the district”.

Ruawai Kindergarten teachers Sara McKinley and Alishya Chircop have facilitated a presentation on the importance of having men involved in early childhood education.

The presentation will take place on Thursday, November 24 at 7.00pm at the Ruawai Community Sports Club.

Both teachers at the kindergarten were the recipients of a 2011 Northland Kindergarten Association Kauri Scholarship with their proposal of promoting early childhood education as a great career choice for men as well as creating an environment where dads, uncles and granddad’s feel comfortable spending time.

“Along with the relocation of the kindergarten, the Ruawai community is in for some exciting additions to their education

sector,” said head teacher, Sara McKinley.

“We will be supported by guest speakers Robin Christie and Jonny Holtom from Childspace Early Learning Centres.

“Robin and his wife Toni operate the very successful Childspace Early Learning Centres — their success in design, development and management of their centres has resulted in requests for professional development, parent education and consultancy services. Jonny Holtom is a valued member of the Childspace workshop and teaching team as well as writing a regular column in the ‘Space’ magazine with a focus on fatherhood,” said Sara.

However, there were fans of a younger generation evident when Mr Peters made an unscheduled stop on the way back to Auckland and another campaign appointment.

He called in for a pint at the Paparoa Hotel. His face was a beaming smile as he fell into conversation with the locals.

Asked about the polling fi gures, he responded that “accountants could make fi gures say anything.”

To another local, he questioned the ability to make money as a qualifi cation to run the economy. “Look at Bernie Madoff (the jailed billionaire fraudster) and a lot of other fi nance company directors,” he quipped.

He was asked why he thought he was making up political ground in the campaign.

“The support has always been there and it’s emerging because I am getting out there, visiting plenty of places around the country — not just one electorate — and talking to people. We’ve had a lot of meetings and our message is getting through.

We are facing the worst economic times in my lifetime. New Zealand needs no false optimism and grand promises of muddling through with aspirations, but a serious reality check.”

With that, he was heading back on the road — ‘with my safe driver’“ — to be halted by a request for a photo.

“You see what I have to do in politics,” he muttered, but happily complied.

The New Zealand music awards are all about celebrating New Zealand Music and the Raupo School of Rock from Ruawai did just that.

A trip was organised to attend the New Zealand Music Awards at Vector Arena on Thursday, November 3.

“We purchased 44 tickets and took fi ve vehicles to Auckland. Our ‘Rockers’ ranging in age from 8 to 17 were at the red carpet, where they got photos and autographs from the stars of the NZ Music scene,” said Raupo School of Rock guitar teacher, David Salter.

“Students were seen on the TV 4 NZ music awards show and in the photo spread in the New Zealand Herald.

All the children are students of David Salter, guitar teacher and they live in Ruawai and Matakohe. David is also a commercial fi sherman and started the Raupo School of Rock in 2008, he fi ts lessons in around his fi shing.

Each week he goes to Ruawai Primary School and Matakohe Primary School for a day and has high school students after school and on weekends. Each lesson focuses on the student’s interest, ability and attention span.

Currently there are only waiting list places for lessons, as his schedule is full.

Sarah Pile was a regular visitor to Kaipara Harbour in those glory days of kauri timber, saw millers, sailors and sailing ships. Not a woman, but a brigantine, probably in her day the best known ship in New Zealand, Australia and South Pacifi c.

Built at Sydney in 1864 Sarah Pile arrived in Napier in 1865. In between picking up timber from Te Kopuru, Aratapu or Nicholson’s Mill at Port Albert for Australian or New Zealand ports, she seemed prepared to take any cargo and go anywhere.

Even two sorties to the southern whaling seas were not too much for her. On her fi rst trip in 1873 the maid of all work killed four whales and lost two others.

Back load cargoes were sometimes surprising. They could be made up of bone dust, railway sleepers, potatoes or passengers. One ill advised captain even took on board an escaped convict as a stowaway. That skipper and two crewmen were sentenced to 13 months’ imprisonment.

During some down time in 1890, Sarah Pile headed for Rarotonga with general cargo. She took back to Sydney 350,000 oranges, 4,000 coconuts and 3,500 gallons of lime juice. Returning from a Norfolk Island voyage she carried back to Auckland 58 casks of whale oil, 47 sacks of kumara, 13 of maize, 9 of fungus and 20 hides.

Sarah Pile — maid of all workby Brian Eastwood

On another venture, Sarah sailed for New Caledonia to load guano but was sent away empty by the Governor because she had no permission from the French government.

A fortunate ship, she survived all the usual wind bound diffi culties and frustrations suffered by traders to Kaipara Harbour.

The Auckland Star reported in 1888. ‘Sarah Pile has been keeping off and outside the bar during the past week, having a lively time of it. Easterly winds, more or less severe, account for the master hesitating to take the bar’.

She tangled with Tory Shoal and North Spit the following year, but her luck held. Drifting on to the Spit she hit bottom several times among breakers, only to drift off again. Even luckier was seaman Robert Lisson who was washed overboard but the next sea washed him back on deck.

Over the thirty years of dashing around the Pacifi c, Kaipara Harbour and Tasman Sea and after many incidents the little 92 feet, 115 ton barquentine had always returned to her work.

She ran aground in Wellington, Westport, had problems off Waikato Heads, sprang a bad leak on her way to Kaipara from Wellington and once took 44 days to cross the Tasman. Written off after hitting rocks at Tairua, she was towed to Auckland for repairs and was soon trading again.

But the end came in 1895 when, loaded with timber, she ran onto Breaksea Spit off the

Queensland coast. All crew and passengers escaped but the captain was held to be negligent. She was towed water logged and wrecked into Mary River near Maryborough.

Just before Christmas 1879, Sarah brought the telegraph cable for laying across the Northern Wairoa River from Tokatoka to Te Kopuru. With her many trips to Kaipara, Sarah Pile played a big part in our history.

Question! Did Dargaville and Northland gain any benefi t from the Rugby World Cup?

If the experience of Dargaville Museum is anything to go by the answer must be ‘yes’. From the very fi rst days after the September 9 Cup kick off, the Museum had visitors from many of the competing countries.

In that fi rst week people from South Africa, Australia, England and France were in town. Over the time of the tournament they kept arriving. Team supporters came from Canada, USA, Scotland, Ireland, Tasmania and Wales. And thrown into the mix has been the usual run of other tourists from places such as Germany, Denmark, Holland, Bali and the Isle of Man.

New Zealanders were also on the road, travelling from New Plymouth, Hawkes Bay, Matamata and Whitianga to pick out just a few. ‘Bill and Jill’, who are probably Kiwi, declared, ‘This is our second visit, will be back for a third’.

One tourist even brought exhibits for the Rainbow Warrior display.

Maybe though, the best compliment came from a Maungaturoto visitor. “You should be so proud of your Museum. It is a fascinating experience. We will spread the word.”

World Cupspinoff for NorthlandDuring the school holidays in early October, a group of ten Otamatea

High School students travelled to Thames’ Kauaeranga Valley with co-ordinators, Robyn Bruce and Wayne Maclennan, to complete a pre-expedition for their respective Gold and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

During the three-day excursion, the group covered 40 kilometres of tracks in unpredictable weather conditions. Day one saw the students tramp 15 kilometres on the challenging Wainora/Booms Flat Circuit and the night was spent at the education lodge as the rain bucketed down. and the Kauaeranga River rose. The next morning however, saw a fi ne day dawn and the group set off for the Pinnacles.

A historic packhorse route followed a rock-embedded path and stone steps leading to the Pinnacles Hut at 740 metres elevation. The route was originally used in the 1920s by Kauri bushmen.

All students completed their tramp admirably and are now looking forward to their qualifying expedition to the South Island next month. They will complete the 70 kilometre Travers/Sabine Circuit in the Nelson Lakes area.

Matakohe matriarch, Mavis Smith, has celebrated reaching the grand age of 101. A landmark sign erected at The Kauri Museum for her 100th birthday party last year was subtley altered as museum staff and friends welcomed her with a cake and morning tea.

Mavis is a long-time museum stalwart, with she and family members the founders of the internationally known attraction.

She still lives in the nearby kauri villa in which she was born, a home she has bequeathed to the museum’s care. Her story is told in the book Child of the Kauri — still available at the museum gift shop.

Wireless telegraphy has developed quickly and now attracts so little attention, except when it is the means of announcing some

catastrophe, that its simplicity is hardly realised by most people. Complete wireless installations for sending and receiving messages over short distances are now so compact and so cheap that it is quite easy to equip a motor car so that it can communicate with wireless stations or similarly equipped vehicles up to a distance of about 20 miles. This new adaptation of the wireless opens up a question as to whether cars used for touring will carry their own means of communication. There is no doubt that many a tourist when he is stalled on the roadside miles from assistance would welcome a means of communicating with the nearest garage.

Christmas is not far awayHave a great worry free break by having your loved one spend some time at Norfolk Court,be in early to catch Santa and the two Christmas lunch’s.

Sue Kernot started Country Dawn Quilting from her rural Tikinui property three years ago and it has since grown into a successful internet business, with international buyers.

However, the response she received at this year’s Quilt Show, held at Fosters Mall in Dargaville, prompted Sue to move her business to town.

Her new headquarters in Gladstone Street, Dargaville has housed many businesses in its time but now provides the perfect location for Sue’s vision.

The huge multi-room building will be a shop, packed wall-to-wall with quilting supplies, classrooms and there will also be a gathering spot for quilters to chat and sew.

Sue’s mother, Dawn, was a keen quilter and her Aunty, Margaret Needham is a member

Country DawnQuilting is coming to town!

of Otamatea Quilters. Both have passed their passion on to Sue, who in turn has passed on the art to friends, like Chrissie Robinson, who is an integral part of helping Sue establish the business.

“At the moment, we’re playing it by ear and things may change, depending on demand,” says Sue. “Initially, we’ll be open from 9am to 3pm from Monday to Friday and until about 1pm on Saturdays.

Sue and Chrissie say that traditionally women came together to quilt and it is a very social art form. The environment at the nearly-opened quilting centre is friendly and welcoming and the emphasis is on people browsing — “it’s not an in-and-out store”.

Country Dawn Quilting’s grand opening is on Saturday, November 19.

Come and jointhe Bubbly Brunch Bunch

Put it in your diary to visit Aratapu Tavern and treat you and your family to some delicious summer fun. The new Bubbly Brunch Bunch menu is a must, a soon-to-be overhauled menu is on the way — including the ever-popular lamb shanks and two new bright and bubbly local staff members have joined the team.

“The only thing that is constant at Aratapu Tavern is change,” says proprietor, Donice Morris. Terrie Vazey was the rst to join the team as assistant chef and learnt the ropes extremely fast, says Donice. Newly quali ed chef, Karla Olsen, came on board soon after and is now head chef at Aratapu Tavern.

“For summer and the Christmas months, we are launching our new brunch menu, which comes with a complimentary glass of bubbly or bottomless coffee and tea. It also includes ‘Texas Style Biscuits and Redeye Gravy’.”

For the uninitiated, the Texas biscuits are more like a cheese scone with cracked pepper and the gravy is coffee-based, with ecks of ham — perfect after a long drive or long night out. The Brunch Bunch menu also includes the Big Brekkie, a classic omelette, pancake stacks and healthy muesli.

Both Terrie and Karla say they have always enjoyed cooking and are learning even more skills on the job. Terrie is the “pizza queen” and has mastered the omelette, while Karla is experimenting with the biscuits and gravy — which surprisingly, is often requested — and loves making desserts.

Terrie, Karla and Donice have perfected the seafood basket too, by hand-dipping the seafood in batter and cooking it to order. The tavern has also established a reputation for having the best sh and chips around.

Aratapu Tavern offers up live entertainment every Friday evening and the staff is gearing up for Christmas and the New Year — bookings for Christmas work functions are also rolling in. The courtesy van operates Tuesday through Sunday from 5pm, travelling North every half hour and South every hour. It is also available on request.

Eighteen year old Ayesha Curnow has graduated from Otamatea High School with excellence in all her internal assessments, which means she has already gained Level 3 with excellence before sitting her fi nal exams.

Ayesha is the fi rst student at OHS to achieve this standard and has been awarded the Dux of School.

Ayesha now plans to take a ‘gap year’ to learn how to manage her health after experiencing immune problems and chronic fatigue syndrome this year. However, during her well-earned break from study, Ayesha will continue to pursue her dreams.

“This year has year has been pretty intense, which is why I’m taking a break,” says Ayesha of her gap year. “After that, I’d like to go to art school — probably Elam at Auckland university.

“I’m moving to Hamilton next year, where I’ll work and hopefully get involved with set design. I’ve registered with Auckland Theatre Company and my plan is to volunteer my time preparing sets for events and other set work. I recently designed the sets for Otamatea Repertory Theatre’s productions of M*A*S*H and Annie.”

Ayesha says that her two passions are art and theatre and set design is a combination of the two. She also enjoys listening to music, playing the drums and ukulele, attending musical events and cooking.

Ayesha’s other subjects this year were Media Studies and Photography and her Level 3 excellence means that she has already achieved the highest result available.

Seventeen year old Amanda McLaren is the newly named Dux of Dargaville High School and the exceptional student is also the recipient of a University of Auckland scholarship. She is heading to Auckland in the new year to commence a four year Engineering Degree.

“I was quite worried before prizegiving but I’m just super glad that I got Dux,” says Amanda. “My next step is doing the degree but I’m not entirely sure what career path I’ll take just yet.”

For the whole McLaren family, the Baptist Church is a big part of their life and Amanda enjoys church, youth group and reading. She is part of the youth leadership team at the Fish Factory and along with others, helps to organise the events and devotions every Friday.

Amanda’s Year 13 subjects were Biology, Physics, Calculus, Chemistry and English — and she says that her best is probably Calculus or Chemistry. At times, Amanda had thought about studying medicine but after attending a Rotary Science Forum for two weeks last summer, she decided to study engineering instead.

“The fi rst year of the degree is a broad year that all the students do, then after that we start to specialise into all the different types of Engineering, such as civil, mechanical, chemical and bio-medical. I’ll decide after my fi rst year, which path I want to take. I’m really looking forward to it and think it will be really interesting.”

Amanda will board at the Auckland Baptist Tabernacle Hostel. Her sister, an occupational therapist, also lives in Auckland.

Soon-to-be eighteen year old, Danni Wright is leaving school with the top honour, Dux of School, and she knows exactly where she is going.

The Rodney College student is off to Albany to complete a three year Bachelor of Science degree, and will be majoring in Human Nutrition, followed by a Masters in Dietetics.

“It was a huge shock,” says Danni. “I thought Zane Reid, who got Proxime Accessit, would be Dux. I was so surprised.

“After university, I would like to be a dietician or a natural health doctor — or something along those lines, and hopefully get a lot of research in on the way there.”

Most people in Year 13 take fi ve subjects but Danni took six and included a mixture of Maths, the Sciences, English and Art.

“Art is a passion of mine, so I couldn’t give that up — I love making stuff and would like to continue it as a hobby.

“I also casually jump from sport to sport and this year it’s been snowboarding. Danni was also topped the class in English, came fi rst equal in Biology and second in Chemistry.

She was the recipient of the Julie Small Trophy for outstanding leadership and student support along with the Tauira Motuhake Trophy for greatest Maori student achievement.

“That one was also a huge surprise for me!”

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

Nola Sports has been an authorised stockist and supporter of Kilwell products since the very beginning — a partnership which has greatly benefi ted the anglers of the Kaipara district.

Kilwell was established in 1933 as a manufacturer and wholesale distributor of fi shing tackle, fi rearms and outdoors related products. Their Fibretube manufacturing division produces an extensive range of fi breglass, carbon fi bre and composite tubing products used in a multitude of applications.

The production facility operates 20 hours per day with 70% of production exported worldwide — a truly innovative local company.

The Rod Craft division manufactures a complete line of custom made sport fi shing rods of world class standard catering for every type of fi shing, from delicate fl y rods to powerful saltwater game rods. The reputation of Kilwell Rod Craft rods is highly regarded and with many being exported to niche markets worldwide.

Kilwell Sports distributes an impressive list of leading international fi shing and shooting brands through some 350 retail outlets. The company boasts a strong emphasis on after sales service and prides itself in working closely with its principles.

One of their market leaders — and an innovation in quality multi-purpose fi shing rods — is the Kilwell Jellytip. The famous and distinctive red tip provides sensitivity for casting and bite detection then “folds away” during the fi ght to leave the graphite powerbutt in control.

New technologies in construction have improved the design of Kilwell blanks with the use of new super-thin multi-directional graphite layering and nanotechnology, resulting in a very light and sensitive blank that is immensely powerful. So Kilwell Jellytip rods give anglers the advantages of power, control and sensitivity. All NZ made, Kilwell Rodcraft rods have a fi ve year conditional warranty against faulty materials and workmanship.

Mike stocks a range of genuine Kilwell Jellytip rods, so drop in to the store and talk to him about these rods and check out the deals he has on, leading up to the King of the Kaipara fi shing contest.

Whangarei boys hosted Dargaville on Saturday in there reserve grade cricket match. Dargaville, batted fi rst on a green seaming grass wicket, thick cloud cover adding to their woes by providing late swing. Dargaville lost 3 quick wickets before captain Terry Duncan steadied the innings, scoring 48. With the wicket continuing to take seam and swing, Dargaville reached a modest, but defendable 158 all out in the 49th over.

Whangarei started well, however Dargaville stuck to their task and by the 40th over, the game was in the balance, Whangarei still needed 50 with only three wickets in hand. Lance Panoho being the best of Dargaville’s bowlers with four wickets for only 23 runs from his 10 overs.

Whangarei clawed there way to a win in the 47th over with two wickets in hand. Dargaville play at Dargaville high school next week, 12.30 start.

As part of their birthday celebrations in November, Fosters Home Decorating in Dargaville decided to give back to the community by offering a $5,995 Soprano lounge suite for only $1,995 with the intention to donate the proceeds to Northern Wairoa Cricket Association.

The money will go towards fundraising efforts to help build a new cricket pitch at Dargaville High School.

The highly anticipated Ford Kuga has arrived in New Zealand on a wave of global acclaim — the little four-wheel drive with the quirky name and the extroverted styling has proven to be a hit overseas with motoring pundits hailing its bold and fashionable looks as well as its rock-steady and car-like handling.

This is absolutely nothing like the last Ford with a similar name. And while some folks might have thought a remake of the old Mercury Cougar would have gone one better than the new Mustang, what the team at Ford have done is more than a re-invention of a name.

The Kuga is a re-invention of the ‘crossover’ genre, a slice of the market often criticised for its style over substance approach. There are many small sports-vehicle-meets-estate-wagon variations to choose from out there, but many don’t have the chops to actually leave the tarmac behind. Some, like the Mitsubishi ASX are more commonly available in two-wheel drive, despite their looks.

But the Kuga is different. With no body roll to speak of the Ford Territory’s baby brother still boasts a good foot of ground clearance, and a four-wheel drive system incorporating some very tricky electronics, such as a brakeforce distributing system which functions as a virtual limited slip diff. In fact, a better comparison would be to the latest offering from Range Rover — the stylish and surprisingly offroad-competent Evoque.

Although you’ll fi nd the Kuga to be the better looking of the two, and thanks to the ‘world car’ origins of this German-assembled, British designed Ford, it’s considerably less expensive.

A crossover which ticks all the boxes There’s a sense that some very skilled

engineers have gotten just about as much as they could out of the Kuga, playing with interior space and a wheelbase just a little bigger than that of the old Ford Escape.

The result is a roomy, leather-wrapped cabin with enough head and legroom for a basketball team. There’s even a neat split rear door with a parcel hatch that opens independently of the tailgate for shopping.

Best of all, power for the Kuga comes from a fi ve-cylinder petrol engine which is all but silent and yet delivers 200 horsepower and a heroic dose of torque to keep those stylish Titanium edition alloys rolling.

Superior service from new-look M.A.C.If you’re travelling through the rolling

hill country just north of the Kaipara harbour, it’s impossible to miss the brand new roadside sign of Maungaturoto Auto Centre.

Since the late 1970s the team at M.A.C. have been taking care of the petrol and diesel powered motors of the ‘Real New Zealand Town’, and with close to a century of experience between them there’s nothing much mechanical that they can’t see right.

That means the full service — from basic vehicle servicing, Warrant of tness inspections and tyres to major engine and transmission overhauls Maungaturoto Auto Centre have all the skills and facilities to get the job done with their motto being “Quality products Quality service”.

Owner Paul Boakes has been known locally as the man to see for all things automotive for more than three decades, and his son Jeremy has followed in his footsteps, building on the M.A.C. tradition of ef cient, friendly service. In 2003 they were joined by general technician Andrew Wallace, and the team of three have earned a reputation for their competence, expertise and honesty.

It’s not just all aspects of the automotive service trade that Maungaturoto Auto Centre cover, though — in an area close to the rural

heart of Northland they have also being selling and servicing tough, reliable Stihl chainsaws and a huge range of power equipment for 34 years.

This summer, whether you’re heading out on the highway or heading out back to take care of the yard, stop by and talk to Paul, Jeremy and Andrew rst. They’ll make sure that safety and ef ciency are top priority — whether it’s for your vehicle or yourpower equipment.

There are some things we look forward to each month — and then there’s the power bill. It’s a necessity of modern life, but as the cost of powering all those contemporary appliances mounts, it’s also easy to see why moves to slash power costs are so popular right now!

Leading the way is Dargaville company Plumbing and Heating, who have spearheaded an initiative to reduce home energy costs. Modern technology offers many innovations to make Kiwi homes more energy ef cient, and the Government has even weighed in to assist in the uptake of these technologies via EECA grants and subsidies.

The two most critical areas in terms of power use both involve heating — heating your home, and heating the many hundreds of litres of hot water used by New Zealand families each week. Here’s what Northland customers Rob and Pam Baxter have to say about their experience with Plumbing and Heating when it came time to upgrade their home and reduce their power costs...

“When planning the building of our new home we looked into alternative home heating systems and we decided to install an under oor heating system… After consulting with the energy saving experts from Dargaville Plumbing & Heating Centre it was apparent that they could offer an integrated solution which included the under oor heating and the hot water system.”

In this case it was a clever conjunction of solar hot water heating, under oor

Cutting power bills down to size

heating using the same hot water system, and a backup element for emergencies. There’s no reason why your home can’t be effectively heated by a combination of modern gas, diesel technology, solar energy and even a wetback replace — none of which use electricity!

“Since moving into our new home we have been very pleased with the under oor heating. It provides constant, even and comfortable heating throughout the house. The heat in each room is thermostatically controlled allowing different levels of comfort to be set to suit individual family member’s preferences.”

Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? And each month the Baxter’s power bill is a fraction of what it might have been without the help of Plumbing and Heating.

To take the rst step, call Plumbing and Heating for an obligation free in home assessment — a comprehensive look at all the ways you could reduce your energy bill and create a more ef cient home. With replaces, diesel boilers, wetback systems, califonts, solar hot water heaters and much, much more, they are the company who cut power bills down to size!

The Kauri Chorus gave an outstanding performance before a sell-out crowd on Saturday night, followed by an equally impressive matinee performance on Sunday.

The show was a fi rst of its kind for the talented group of twenty fi ve Kaipara ladies and featured an array of songs from stage and fi lm.

“It was really well done,” says concert goer, Betty Willetts. “The music covered

all eras from about the 1930s through to the 1990s.

“They chose really good songs that the audience could get into and even dressed in character for quite a few of their numbers. The crowd ranged in age from about eight to eighty and everyone was really behind the Chorus.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was well worth it. They should be holding more of these performances.”

All the Kauri Chorus members dressed as nuns for a fi tting musical fi nale from movie and musical Sister Act.
