A record Anzac observanceu by Paul Campbell

Across Kaipara, the country and the world, Anzac Day remembrances attracted many thousands, a century on from when the guns opened up in Europe at the beginning of the First World War.

While Anzac Day was inspired by the sacrifices of Gallipoli, Governor-General Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae spoke at the national observance in Wellington about “the ties of friendship and family that were formed in the trenches at Gallipoli, on the Western front and in battlefields since that time.”

More than 200 people came to the Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall in Dargaville including war veterans,

students, scouts, training cadets and representatives of emergency services. Kaipara District Council commissioner Richard Booth acted as MC. Northern Wairoa RSA president John McLean lit the flame, while the address was given by Dargaville High School head boy Cameron Randell and head girl Emily Powell before wreaths were laid at the RSA flagpole.

At Matakohe’s Kauri Museum several great-grandchildren of former

prime minister Joseph Gordon Coates travelled home to mark the day near where the soldier and statesman farmed at Hukatere.

“There was a record crowd,” said Kauri Museum CEO Bet Nelley.

“We estimate around four hundred, as with 300 people in the Volunteers Hall for the service, there was a huge spillover outside, literally standing room only.

p Dargaville Library hosted the first of two school holiday activity days last Wednesday. Librarians Courtnee Ormsby and Jane McAlpine captured the children’s attention with a storytelling session and kept them entertained making cards for family and friends. Next Wednesday, April 30, is Superhero Day and the kids will be treated to a visit by a firefighter and have the opportunity to make their very own superhero badges. Activities start at 10.30am.

p Otamatea High School’s clay shooting team travelled to Kaeo this month to take part in the first of five competition shoots run by Northland Fish & Game. The team — Bailey Hamlin, Jake Hamlin, Ashton Coates, Quynten McCarroll, Michael Parker and Jamie Manuel — shot well, scoring over 350 out of a possible 475. Pictured here in their new Carters T shirts, the students would like to extend a huge thank you their sponsors, Mike Schimanski and the team at Carters, who have recognised their potential and gone out of their way to show support for their local school.

Otamatea High School students attended a Special Olympics Athletics Day at North Harbour Stadium recently and had a fantastic day competing against students from many other schools.Events on the day included long jump, running and walking races, javelin throwing among other fun sports and OHS students were placed from first to third in a number of activities. Maddy Bond proudly displays her two first place ribbons for the 50m run and 50m walk. OHS Learning Centre’s Ladene Hunter said the students showed excellent teamwork, which helped to make it a pleasurable day for all.

Capturing bygone daysu by Paul Campbell

They are popping up all about the Kaipara.

‘They’ being the members of the Paparoa Harness Driving Group, a connection of like-minded equine fanciers and animal lovers who like to harness miniature horses to the buggies, or traps, and ride about in the style of years gone by.

“We have five members currently in the group, and another three ‘members in training’,” said organiser, Shirley Warner-Summers, who often has canine passengers aboard.

“In training means that we train our own horses to the task.”

But excited kids and eager adult tourists can also be spotted when the group offers free rides at the Paparoa Farmers Market on each second Saturday.

“We get visitors from Auckland who are thrilled to take a ride,” says Shirley.

“We also have five farm drives which we visit, and we go further afield, to Baylys Beach and other Kaipara destinations.”

Another group stalwart is Jeanette Straiton, from Waiotira, and she and trusty miniature steed Basil recently did well at a two-day meeting of like-minded drivers at Matakana, taking the points prize for the day. This was awarded to the combination that excelled in obstacle and cross country driving.

The group has plans underway to drive a four-wheel buggy which is currently under construction, with two horses in harness — a ‘pair in hand’. ¢

Dalmatian Day festivitiesDalmatian descendants in the Northern Wairoa celebrated their ancestry and culture on Saturday with a Dalmatian Day at Dargaville Museum.

Visitors enjoyed renewing friendships, viewing museum displays — especially of the gum washing machine in action; videos of pioneer Dalmatians in Northland with accompanying talks by Frank Vinac and partner Kaye Dragicevich;

and gum scraping demonstrations by museum volunteer and club member Ron Halliday.

They then enjoyed billy tea and a spit roast lamb lunch, followed by entertainment from a tamburica band and kolo dancers. ¢

Recognition for making sport happenu by Joanne Speechly

Chairperson of the Northern Wairoa Primary Schools Sports Association, Alan Russek, has been named a Sport Northland Lotto Sport Maker.

Along with two other successful nominees from the Far North and Whangarei, Alan received Lotto Spor t Maker merchandise and a first aid kit for his contribution to ‘making sport happen’.

Alan, who is also the principal of Dargaville Primary, says he enjoys activity and has been involved with spor t throughout his teaching career. He believes sport is a vital part of education and helps to set up good habits for life.

“It is very rewarding — being able to watch students that you have worked with during their primary years, go on to represent Northland or even further.”

Alan rates fairness as one of the challenges facing coaches — trying not to be seen as biased. He says he’s been fortunate to have family support, which has allowed him to continue in his role as a Sport Maker.

“It helps that they are all passionate about sport too!”

Toy library needs a boostu by Joanne Speechly

Dargaville Toy Library has a bright new home, with a fresh selection of toys, but what it really needs is some new members, to keep the service viable.

The library’s new central location is at Blue 2 — the DVD Centre and it is now open three days a week, on Tuesday mornings between 11am and 1pm, Wednesday afternoons between 1 and 3pm and on Saturday morning from 10am until 12 noon.

“We’re here and we’re open, so come in and see us,” urges librarian, Wendy Cocurullo. “On paper, we have quite a few members but only a handful come in regularly and hire toys.

“At the end of the day, that’s what we need. We’re not-for-profit, so we rely on memberships to keep going — otherwise the community will lose a great service.”

Dargaville Toy Library was established in 1993 and for an annual membership fee, families can borrow toys for up to two weeks at a time.

“It operates in a very similar way to a normal library. People sign up for a membership and there is a small charge to cover any damage

and then $2 thereafter for each toy borrowed.”

Toy libraries have been operating in New Zealand for forty years and the national body was established in 1980.

Dargaville Toy Library has a great selection of quality branded toys, puzzles, games, ride-on bikes and cars, and can be found at 3 Poto Street, Dargaville. Phone Wendy on 09 439 4800 or 021 135 8889 for more information. ¢

p Wendy Cocurullo says the library has a great new selection of toys but they need more members to keep the service running

Alan has been a keen competitor himself having played rugby, touch, netball, basketball, outdoor sports, such as scuba, fishing and hunting, cycling, triathlon and endurance running.

The Northern Wairoa Primary Schools Sports Association helps to organise sport locally and aims to ensure that all children are able to experience as many sporting opportunities as possible. Members meet each term to discuss sporting events and provide support. ¢

‘Cryptic cross’ discoveredu by Joanne Speechly

The ongoing Red Hill Cemetery restoration project has uncovered some forgotten fragments of the area’s rich history.

One of these is the original kauri cross marking the resting place of Charley Charleston, an early proponent of Te Kopuru Hospital. The mill hand tirelessly walked the Northern Wairoa district collecting subscriptions in favour of the development.

However, although Charley was a well-known local identity, he felt that people did not understand him and insisted that when he died his only epitaph, on a white wooden cross, should read ‘Not Under Stood’ after the poem of the same name by Thomas Bracken.

Charley’s spelling has fascinated many people over the years — cleverly done with ‘under stood’ written as two words and the ‘S’ the wrong way around.

The cross has recently been restored by Des Subritzky, who has been leading the cemetery upgrade project, and Dargaville artist Trevor Moss is donating a plaque on the cross’ history to be installed at Red Hill Cemetery.

“It’s taken many hours of work to restore the cross and research Charley but it’s been worth it,” says Des. “Over the years, many people have asked about the spelling, so the history behind it is important.

“Charley and the Thomas Bracken poem is basically asking people to take a decent look at others. Good on him —

p Des Subritsky with the restored ‘cryptic’ cross

Charley may not have been a doctor but through his attitude and efforts, he helped save many lives.”

Des says there is still more upgrade work to be completed at Red Hill Cemetery but by this time next year, people will notice a big difference.

“It’s good to be involved with something that people appreciate and it has been very pleasing to see so many people come forward and offer their assistance.” ¢

Surprise visit for Kaiwaka kids

A visitor bearing good news made a surprise stop-over at Kaiwaka School recently. Sport Northland’s Louise Collings personally delivered awards and prizes to two students who were winners in the Swim for Life Poster competition.

“There were 70 entries and five overall winners — two from Kaiwaka School,” said Louise. That’s a great achievement.”

The children were delighted with their certificates and prize package of goodies. ¢

BRING HOME THE ACTION TONIGHT!

FROZENThis is a gem for the whole family, hearkening back to the classic animated movies we all loved as kids. From the masterminds at Disney comes an enchanted tale with music, action, humour and some stunning animation which will leave you spellbound. In the kingdom of Arendelle live two princesses, Anna and Elsa. Elsa’s magicl power to control ice and snow has led her to a solitary life, with fears that she will not be able to control her abilities and will hurt others. When she and her sister are thrust into power by their parents’ untimely death, events conspire to send Elsa’s powers out of control, locking the kingdom in eternal winter. Meanwhile her sister has met the charming Prince Hans, who seems to be the man of her dreams. But when Anna sets off to rescue her sister from her icy solitude and bring back summer, Hans fails to follow, and instead the young Princess finds herself in the company of rugged mountain ranger Kristoff and his reindeer sidekick Sven. Soon they’re joined by the comical living snowman Olaf, brought to life accidentally by Elsa’s magic. As the quest reaches its epic conclusion loyalties are tested, friendships forged, and a magical curse is challenged - with the very fate of Anna’s life and the whole kingdom in the balance.

Hawks flyinghigh this seasonu by Colin Patterson

It’s been a successful season for the Otamatea Hawks and supporters hope it will get even better.

The Hawks are in third place in the Northland Rugby’s Southern Districts competition behind only Hora Hora and Wellsford, having won five of their seven matches.

Club president Kevin Robinson says it has been the Hawks most successful season for four years. The highlight so far has been a 40–36 win over Mid Northern, the club that produced the legendary Going brothers.

A recent descent into division 2 led to a loss of playing strength, as players left to look for other opportunities. But those players left behind showed resilience by winning promotion for the Hawks. This year they have proved themselves at a higher level.

The club’s squad includes Matt Moulds and Shane Neville who are both

ITM Cup contracted players, as well as Northland First Five Daniel Hawkins. But most of the remaining players are Otamatea locals. But many still have long distances to travel for training and matches.

“We look after the players,” says Mr Robinson. “Our supporters come out in good numbers. And we’ve got good sponsorship from local businesses.”

While this year’s results have been good, the Hawks still have two games to finish the first round. Then all the teams play each other again. The top four after the second round will play off in the semi-finals. “There’s still a long way to go,” says Mr Robinson. “We’re in third position. We need a lot more wins to secure a top-four position. But at this stage it’s looking good.” ¢

Brigade seekingwomen firefightersu by Colin Patterson

Dargaville’s Volunteer Fire Brigade is on the lookout for more volunteers — especially women.

Time is running out …Entries for the Art ’N’ Tartan Wearable Arts Awards close on Friday, May 2, and as the awards go from strength to strength, the 2014 event promises to be even bigger and better than those that have gone before.

Demand for tickets has outstripped available seating and organisers are looking forward to being able to stretch out and grow even bigger next year in the new Waipu Barn.

This year’s new category The Engine Room is designed to give architects, engineers and back shed DIYers a chance to construct something unique.

Other categories are McKiwi, Fireside Stories from the Land of Myths, the Mask section and Brave Heart for those who can transform the mundane into the extraordinary.

Entr y forms are available from the Waipu Museum or www.wa i p u m u s e u m . c o m . Preliminary judging will take place on May 31. ¢

Penny Searle is one of four female members of the brigade and has been a volunteer firefighter for seven years.

To become a volunteer Penny had to pass a criminal records check and a health check. Then she did a week’s training in Rotorua, learning the do’s and don’ts of firefighting, and how to use firefighting gear.

In her time as a volunteer she has responded to hundreds of callouts, including motor vehicle crashes and accidents on farms. But it is not devastation and the grief of loss she remembers most. It is the resilience that people show after things go wrong.

“In one call out a guy my age had lost his leg in a feed spreader. He had such a good attitude he was walking on a prosthetic leg within a month.”

Penny says being a volunteer teaches really important life skills. “It teaches teamwork, how to handle high-pressure situations and how to be independent.”

She believes women can do important work in the brigade. “I’d like to see more women in the Dargaville brigade. Every person has their place. There are roles in operational support.”

One of the downers of being a volunteer is that the siren goes off at the most inconvenient times, such as when you are asleep at 3am. But Penny says that is not a problem for her. “It’s exciting when the siren goes off. If it’s not, you really shouldn’t be doing it.”

Behind every good volunteer, there’s a good employer. Penny says her employer, Northland Farm Services, has been incredibly understanding in allowing her to pursue her role as a volunteer.

Dargaville brigade has just 16 volunteers on its roster, with three of them scheduled to leave later this year. If you think you can fill the breach and serve the community, call chief fire officer Jeff Palmer on 021 210 4254. ¢

Acting upu by Joanne Speechly

2014 has been a big year for Dargaville Little Theatre and the dedicated thespians are now gearing up for their latest offering, two One Act Plays.

The two 45 minute plays, The Memoirs and Over My Dead Body, will be performed in Dargaville over two nights, on May 8 and 9, and are both entered in Otamatea Repertory’s TheatreFest the following weekend.

Writer and director of The Memoirs, Deborah Steele, says she is keen to find out what the community will make of the play.

“The play is based on my mother-in-law’s journey with breast cancer and it’s the first serious play I have written, so it’s pretty exciting for me.

My mother-in-law kept a diary of sorts throughout her journey, so I’ve taken that idea and included some other

elements, like a complicated mother-daughter relationship — it’s a bit of a tear jerker at the end.

“I’m really getting into the writing of plays and as this is my first one that is not a comedy, I would really like to see if people enjoy it.”

First-time director Dylan Hansen will guide an experienced cast in the farcical whodunnit, Over My Dead Body!

“It’s a spoof of murder mysteries, so although it follows the usual storyline of a murder mystery, it has some pretty funny twists and turns,”says Deborah.

“The audience will be kept guessing until the very end.” ¢

Acrylic Painting with Pauline GoughSaturday May 31 and Sunday June 1, 10:30am to 3:00pmPauline has had a very successful year selling her paintings locally, nationally and internationally and we are thrilled that she has agreed to hold a workshop to share her knowledge. This workshop is aimed for beginners to advanced painters and is not about ‘know how’ but about being inspired and creating. Although Pauline will demonstrate certain techniques, the intention is for you to get excited about the business of painting and find your own style. The most important thing is to have fun and surprise yourself!

Wirework Jewellery with Jennifer CrundwellSaturday May 31 and Sunday June 1, 10:30am to 3:00pmAlso a fully qualified tutor in Art Clay Silver, she has also produced fine pieces using beading, and ceramics, enjoying success with a collaborative pendant, taking 3rd place in the prestigious International UK Bead Competition held in London. A regular entrant in the Adornment Section of the Kaipara Art Awards, she took out 1st and 3rd in 2012, and 1st and 2nd in the 2013 event.

Harmony Singing with Maura & Peter FlowerSaturday May 31 and Sunday June 1, 10:30am to 3:00pmSinging harmony is a true art form. Why does it sound so good, and how does it work? This workshop is an amazing opportunity to learn with two inspirational vocal coaches. Maura and Peter Flower need little introduction to the people of Northland. They are both heavily involved with Kaipara’s own Otamatea Repertory Theatre where they teach aspiring singers and actors of all ages and abilities. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced singer, you will come away from this workshop, sounding better than when you arrived.

Irish touch at Maungaturoto Hotelu by Colin Patterson

He’s a long way from his native Belfast but Mark Daly couldn’t be happier.

The Ulsterman has just taken over as manager of the Maungaturoto Hotel and is looking forward to interacting with its loyal local clientele.

Mark comes to Maungaturoto after seven years working in hotels in central Auckland. He started at the Fiddlers Irish Bar and for the last four years worked at the Muddy Farmer, another central Auckland establishment.

But he decided he wanted a change after living in New Zealand’s largest city. “I wanted to see more of the real New Zealand.”

Mark agrees Maungaturoto is way different than Auckland, but he’s enjoying life in a small provincial town. “Maungaturoto is good. It’s got fresh air. I enjoy looking outside and seeing grass and trees.”

As hotel manager, Mark says he ‘oversees everything’. That includes the entertainment and restaurants and the bars. The Maungaturoto Hotel is more

than 100 years old and Mark is keen to keep its traditions going. That includes rugby and sporting events on the big screen and Ladies Nights. He is also setting up fortnightly karaoke contests with bar tabs as prizes. ¢

Deadline close for NRC plan submissionsTime is running out to have your say on Northland Regional Council’s proposal for a nil average general rates increase, as outlined in its draft Annual Plan for 2014/15.

Council chairman Bill Shepherd says the deadline for public submissions is 3pm on Thursday May 1.

He says better-than-expected investment earnings and a close look at its budget have enabled the council to signal the nil average general rates increase.

For a Kaipara district ratepayer whose property has a $225,000 land value the nil increase will mean a total GST-inclusive rates bill of $207.84. This excludes river management rates.

Mr Shepherd says the council is forecasting total operational spending of $29.4 million during the 12 months from July 1. $14.8 million of this will be spent on resource management,

including legally required 10-yearly reviews of its regional plans for air, water and soil and the coast.

Another $4.7 million will be spent on transport, $2.7 million on river management, $2.7 million on community representation and engagement, $2.4 million on economic development, $1.4 million on hazard management and $700,000 on support.

Full details of the work the council is proposing for 2014/15 can be found in its draft Annual Plan.

Copies of the plan and a 12-page summary are available from all council offices or via its website www.nrc.govt.nz/haveyoursay.

A record Anzac observance“What was so evident too was the number

of young people and this is what’s happening everywhere. They want to be involved and we had families travel from Auckland and Whangarei to mark Anzac here, where the service is surrounded by history.”

There was a strong turnout as well at the Dawn Service at Maungaturoto, a march and service at the Ruawai Tokatoka War Memorial Hall, a service and lunch at Hakaru among other Kaipara observances.

There was a similar picture across New Zealand, with young people again to the fore. National RSA

chief executive Stephen Clarke said good weather ensured large crowds of veterans, school groups, young people and families at services across the country.

“The turnouts have been once again huge — there’s great support in terms of remembering our veterans. It’s fast becoming a rite of passage in terms of making sure that you get to the dawn service. And for a first-timer, it’s quite extraordinary. They can’t get over how many people turn up.”

At Gallipoli in Turkey, more than 10,000 people attended services at the battle sites of Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair. ¢

Chris takes a third jalopy titleu by Colin Patterson

Chris White loves hitting other cars when he gets behind the wheel.

He is a careful driver on the open road. But when he drives on a speedway track his persona changes.

Chris gets into his specially modified vehicle, straps himself in and sets out to cause mayhem. The Tokatoka farm manager is so good that earlier this month he won his third successive New Zealand Jalopy title at the Dargaville Speedway track.

Jalopy racing is where competitors attempt to take each other out and win by stopping your opponents from reaching the finish line.

Chris has been jalopy racing for 15 years. “I like that I can hit people and not get in trouble.”

A jalopy car is a former road car which is almost completely stripped. All seats apart from the driver’s are removed. The boot compartment is taken out, along with most of the controls. A roll bar and special harnesses are installed. Chris

says jalopy racing is safe. “I’ve had no serious injuries. I race wearing a seat harness and a neck brace and flame-resistant overalls.”

However, there are plenty of knocks and jolts, and the battered state of his car is evidence of that. But Chris says his car is still set to go for another year of racing and he is prepared for many more hard knocks. “You think you’re going fast. But it’s all around 80 or 90, maybe 100kmh.“

He says jalopy racing can suit all sorts. “It’s good fun and it’s easy to get into.”

What is the secret to being a successful driver? “Practice makes perfect. The more you drive, the more you know what you can do with your car.”

Chris White is active in the Dargaville Production Stockcar Club and will be racing at the club’s Finlayson Park Speedway on May 4. ¢

Tyre tech rolls outu by Andy Bryenton

The rough and rugged logging roads and off-road trails in West Auckland’s Woodhill forest were no match for the latest tyre tech at the recent Mickey Thompson 2014 product launch.

A day spent learning about the new ATZ p3 on-road/off-road tyres was split between a workshop on the science behind the new tyre’s development and some hands-on practical work in the field.

Representing for Mickey Thompson were some serious machines, including the Taupo 1000 off road championship winning Nissan Patrol (retrofitted with a thumping V8) and Dan Cowper’s mud-slinging monster of an off-roader — readers might recognise Dan from Suzuki’s TV coverage of off-road trials; he’s the one who was often standing on the top of the podium!

Representing the Kaipara — and bringing us all the information about Mickey Thompson’s latest — were the team from Gas and Tyre Services,

who were more than happy to tackle the technical side of things before heading out to the forest for some practical demonstrations.

The new ATZ p3 is a breakthrough in that it allows drivers to have one set of wheels for almost all occasions. With stable, quiet performance on-road and a mighty amount of grip across sand, dust, dirt and mud, this innovative tyre combines extra thick PowerPly reinforcement with super-tough sidewalls and a scientifically formulated tread pattern to spit out loose stones and grip like a gecko’s footprint.

All of which was proven in the real world as the trucks on the day’s excursion slogged through tough terrain to a well-earned rest. ¢

“DRIVE SMALL, PLAY BIG” ALL NEW ECOSPORT....NOW IN STORE

DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS

Big fun, small footprintRemember the small SUV? The fun little Suzuki Escudo, the diminutive RAV 4 — heck, even the venerable MacGuyver had his Jeep Wrangler.

Light, sure-footed and with tons of pep, these small firecrackers were a big hit in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Now Ford have reinvented this segment of small, go-anywhere fun machine with the new EcoSport, carrying on the winning formula of their world-beating Fiesta hatchback.

The recipe — more power from less displacement, and more enjoyment from less size. The EcoSport tips the scales as a lightweight, with the Trend model we tested packing only 1.5 litres under the hood. But, like the surprising little 1 litre Ecoboost Fiesta, this new machine is a revelation.

First — the looks. Imposing and unique from the front, with a snub-nosed, pugnacious grille and a hood swept up into the windscreen pillars, the EcoSport has the image of a pared-down Ford Kuga from the side, and boasts a nice surprise at the back — a rear mounted spare wheel mounted Land-Rover fashion.

This isn’t just to display the little sport utility’s off-road intentions — it’s also a way to cleverly add room inside, where the comfort and cutting-edge layout of the Fiesta have been nicely tweaked to fit the new mould. Microsoft’s smart Sync system rounds

out a very comprehensive infotainment suite. On the road, the EcoSport is stable, and corners with minimal roll, tracking smooth and precise — a neat trick for any SUV. The 1.5 we tested came mated to a double-clutch six speed auto, which shifts seamlessly through the gears, getting the most out of the 92 kilowatts on offer. Once again, Ford have managed to squeeze a lot of power out of a small unit.

The verdict is a simple one in this case. Competition in this segment of the market is set to heat up, with Holden bringing out the new Trax and Nissan’s quirky Juke already selling well. But with the EcoSport Ford have set the bar dauntingly high.

It’s spacious enough for the family, handles well, possesses enough power to surprise, and ticks the biggest box of all, coming in at less than $30,000. That’s a competent and cool package, especially when you consider the unique look of the little Ford — it will stand out in the crowd for all the right reasons.

While most sports utilities have become school run barges or armoured cars, the EcoSport goes back to the roots, with that ineffable ‘smile on your face’ factor to the fore. Think of it as the Fiesta’s big brother — with muscles! ¢

Otamatea to OmahaOtamatea High School’s Level 3 Geography class recently travelled to the Omaha Sandspit as part of their first internal assessment.

“The field trip involved us mapping out the area and studying some of the features of the sandspit, under the guidance of our sage, Mr Wayne Maclennan,” said student James Finlay.

“We were specifically interested in the natural processes that occur in the area, such as erosion, wave refraction

and long-shore drift and how these have sculpted the natural environment of Omaha. All in all the trip was very beneficial and it was topped off with a nice shared lunch by the beach, where all our culinary skills came into practice as we battled for the distinction of being best cook.” ¢

Dargaville High principal happy with NCEA resultsu by Colin Patterson

Dargaville High School principal David Bargh is trumpeting his school’s latest NCEA figures, saying they show that his school caters well for a wide range of learning needs.

Figures released by the Ministry of Education show that in 2013 Dargaville High students achieved a pass rate of 86.9% at level one, 77.9% at level two and 81.5% in level three.

Mr Bargh says Dargaville High’s pass rates are comparable to — or better than — other Northland colleges, such as Kerikeri High, Otamatea High and Whangarei Boys’ and Girls’ High.

“Our kids get really good pass rates. We can offer them a wide range of subject choices, such as Art History, and Technology. We’re good and Dargaville High is a good school to send your children to.”

Mr Bargh says the level two pass rate was lower than expected. But that is being addressed. “There’s a little bit of work going on out there.”

Careers Advisor Julie Chiaroni says Dargaville High has developed good

links with local employers and helps students adjust to the world of work. The Gateway programme has helped 75 students get jobs in occupations as diverse as retail, automotive, agricultural and early childhood. ¢
