Recognised for sport

p Jenny Crundwell and Christine Rope sold raffle tickets to passers-by outside Countdown to raise money for the Dargaville Arts Association. There were three separate raffles with two Pauline Gough artworks, a grocery and homeware hamper and a cake to be taken home by the lucky winners. “The funds raised go towards keeping the association afloat,” said Jenny.

p Thomas MacDonald, also known as Mate the Gumdigger, inspects the displays prior to The Kauri Museum’s overnight ‘Night at the Museum’ event, held on April 9 and 16. Children aged from eight to 12 years have the chance to stay over at the museum and learn about life in the time of gumdiggers. Tickets cost $20 per child and $15 per child member. To book email [email protected] or phone 09 431 7417.

p Robyn Bruce has been recognised in a special edition of Sport Northland’s Lotto Sport Maker programme, which recognises those who have helped to make sport happen in their communities for more than 20 years. Robyn initially started coaching hockey in her first year of teaching in 1981 and returned to coaching in 1993 for Maungaturoto Hockey Club. Helping the community in so many ways

The end of an erau by Ann Morgan

Te Kopuru born Jack Cuthbert has been plumbing in Dargaville for 50 years and the time has come to hand on the business and retire.

“I started plumbing when my uncle came to town when I was young and told me about a job,” says Jack.

“I didn’t even know what plumbing was but I knew a bit of maths and English so I enquired and they gave me an apprenticeship.”

“It has been a pleasure working with our clients, they have been really good and supportive to us. We have had a

lot of great experiences and lots of funny stories that go with the job. We want to thank our customers for their loyalty over the years. The business will now be run by Jamie Soole who did his apprenticeship with me and has been back with us for the past two years.

“The time has come to retire and go fishing, travel a bit, build a compost bin and go gold digging in Arrowtown.” ¢

Football festival u by Ayla Miller

Primary school students from four school’s in the Dargaville area participated in a football festival held at Dargaville High School.

The emphasis was on fun, with Sport Northland Lower North community sport advisor Joey Yovich saying, “The aim is to keep the kids active in schools.

“It went really well and we had nearly 100 children participating. It was a beautiful day and great to have the teachers and parents as well as Silver Fern Farms ongoing support.”

Twelve teams represented Dargaville Primary. The school also brought along eight student umpires. Tangiteroria School had five teams, Tangowahine two and Arapohue had one team.

The drive to encourage children to be involved with football coincides with this years FIFA U-20 World Cup held in New Zealand from May 30–June 20.

Tickets to World Cup games can be purchased through The Northern Wairoa Football Club.

The Northern Wairoa Football Club will be holding a junior registration day on April 18 between 10am and 2pm and on April 25 from 2pm until 4pm at Memorial Park, Dargaville.

“A lot of change is happening, especially with Winston Peters being elected. It feels like a good time.”

Amongst the many topics discussed at the meeting was an event finder website, with NorthSouth Multi Media national sales manager John Pickworth noting there are a lot of events in Dargaville that no one gets to hear about.

“Some venues suggested they have the capability to cater for more people than those that turn up and we have had discussions about council run notice boards at either end of the town to promote the events,” he said.

“There is a buzz about the main street with a lot of good businesses and people are attracted to Dargaville because of this.” ¢

Historic park progressesu by Ayla Miller

The old Christ the King church building in Mangawhai, has been shifted two kilometres to its new site on Molesworth Drive.

The church will make up part of the historic village near the museum.

“It travelled up the road without too much hassel,” said Friends of Mangawhai Park chairman Jim Wintle. A few local volunteers have been helping tidy up the building since its arrival.

“The church has been set down on piles and we still have some fixing and renovations to do as well as looking at the total layout of the place.

“We will be working on mulching some trees and making more space on the land.

p The Christ the King church building in Mangawhai has moved to its new location

“We are also looking at concreting the driveway into the museum and the entrance into the skate park car park.”

Friends of Mangawhai Park will be meeting to work out what action to take next and Mr Wintle hopes to see the work on the church completed by the end of this year.

Volunteers get together each week for working bees at the museum.

“We received a grant for weed control from the Mangawhai Land Empowerment Act which will be used for maintenance on the grounds,” he said. ¢

Carters sponsor golf clubCarters Dargaville have been sponsoring The Northern Wairoa Golf Club for more than 15 years and have replaced the old signs with bright new ones. These are displayed at the entrances to Dargaville on State Highway 12 and 14 as well as the corner of Baylys Coast Road.

“We would like to thank Carters for their sponsorship of the NWGC and for replacing the previous signs which they erected for us more than 7 years ago by the then manager Kevin Pocklington,” says club president Robert Nathan.

“As a club we appreciate their sponsorship very much and the new signs help tidy our town.”

The company are also supplying all the materials for the new storage shed the club is building.

“Supporting the local community is important to us and it is an amazing golf course, well cared for and very picturesque. The locals are great to deal with and we enjoy maintaining contact with the old and new members of the club,” says Carters manager Mark Kapa.

“Our annual Carters Sponsors Tournament is on Friday, April 17 involving 18 teams combined of builders and suppliers and we are looking forward to catching up with the players on the day.” ¢

Northland District Health Board Investment in Patient Transport

Northland District Health Board is introducing paid car parking at the Whangarei Hospital campus on 20 April, 2015. Paid car parking is a part of our financial sustainability programme and will allow us to save our very scarce capital funds for improving and renewing our clinical buildings and continue to allow us to grow and develop clinical services in an increasingly tight fiscal environment.

By charging for parking we are aiming to control the demand, reduce congestion and increase the number of parks we have available. This will reduce the time our visitors need to spend looking for a car park.

Regionally the public can use a subsidised bus service via the Kaipara Community Health Shuttle and the Northland DHB weekday bus service between Kaitaia and Whangarei. Some people may be able to receive National Travel Assistance for travel reimbursement if they are referred by a hospital specialist and travel a long distances or visit a specialist frequently.

Next week we will give you more information about paid car parking at Whangarei Hospital.

Northpower has long recognised the importance of Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopter service. That’s why, since 1988, Northpower has sponsored this life-saving service. We provide $100,000 each year to contribute to operational costs because we recognise that an ongoing long-term relationship is critical for Northland Emergency Services Trust (NEST).Infrastructure of this kind aligns well with what we do – it is primarily for the benefit of Northlanders but also visitors to the region.NEST Chairman Paul Ahlers says the charity’s operational expenditure is $5M a year and climbing as demand for the service grows. Every dollar received goes towards running the operation. “Because we are a charitable trust, that is why every year during our annual fundraising appeal we have to be so vocal about the need for donations to keep saving lives,” says Mr Ahlers. He says without security of funding, NEST’s future would be in jeopardy. And that’s why NEST relies so heavily on local sponsorship and community donations.2014 was the busiest year on record for Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopters and a glance at the NEST facebook page shows just how much this service means to everyday New Zealanders. The crews flew 735 missions in 2014 and transported 800 people to hospitals or medical facilities around the north and other parts of the North Island. On average, the helicopters are now in the air twice a day, saving or making a huge difference to the lives of everyone they carry. Most people in Northland have a loved one or someone they care about, that have been flown by NEST.In fact, during the recent December and January period, NEST had its busiest months on record – due largely to the influx of holiday makers through this time – stretching it to capacity. And year on year, demands on the service grow as our local and tourist population increases. Yet the service, the paramedics and associated emergency services and community volunteers step up to help others.NEST has provided services to Northland for over 26 years and has carried over 17,000 patients. It is estimated that well over 2,000 lives have been saved since the inception of NEST in 1988. The service has grown from a part time single engine machine crewed by volunteers, into a full time operation with several aircraft and highly skilled staff.

Lifesaving appeal Have you ever wanted to practise saving a life? Come along to the St John CPR challenge inside the Dargaville ASB branch on Friday, April 10.

Ambulance and ASB staff are teaming up to raise funds during the St John annual appeal week which runs from April 6 until April 12 and will be holding a cake stall and sausage sizzle from 10am outside the Dargaville ASB branch.

“People will have the chance to practise CPR on a mannequin with a heart monitor. The monitor gauges who conducts the best CPR and the winner will receive an official St John first aid kit,” says retired paramedic and area committee secretary Elaine McCracken.

“We will also be selling raffle tickets for another first aid kit which has been put together by ambulance officers.” Ambulance staff will be on hand to check blood pressure

Basketball comeback at local high schoolu by Joanne Speechly

Basketball is enjoying a revival at Dargaville High School after a gap of almost two decades.

Two former DHS students were keen to see a resurgence of the sport and have stepped into coaching roles for the two teams.

The school’s sports department has fully supported the move and has secured full sponsorship. This has seen both teams, Year 9 to 13 girls and Year 9 to 13 boys, each receive a new uniform at their first pre-season game.

The Whangarei Secondary School Competition, in which the two teams will compete each Friday night, begins in the first week of Term Two.

“The teams have been training twice a week for eight weeks and are showing real promise,” says organiser Simone Matthews, whose daughter Taylor is playing basketball for the first time this year.

“They will continue to train throughout the holidays in preparation for their first game on April 24. Both teams have competed very well in their pre-season games.”

Jamie Manson is coaching the girls team and David Pirini is coaching the boys team.

“It has been their vision for some time to see a revival of basketball at

the school and both played at a fairly high level themselves. They’ve remained active in a number of sporting codes, so it is fitting that they will coach the two teams.” ¢

A dog’s tail …

A bridj too far, maybe?“Yep Dog, she’s all over bar tha

shoutin’. That John Ki has got his come uppince and ole Winnie is cocko’ the North,”

Yep, readas, Boss was in pritty high sprits wen he came gome froma pub last nite. He an’ his mates wear selibrating how that mister Petas won the ‘lection fer Northlind, an; how tha govermint made promissis that we gonna get new bridjis all over tha place.

“Well, enyway Dog,” seda Boss, “that John Ki sed we was still gonna get the bridjis ‘cos they have been ona drawing bord for a long time.”

I reckin tha boss’s gerlfrend Sharlene will be dead chufft about that, ‘cos she hates those bridjis at Matakohee wen she hasta sumtimes pick tha Boss up froma pub.

That’s becos Boss kin only have a cupla bears if he drives hisself ‘cos ofa new drink an’ drive rooles. Boss got cort a wile ago, by tha cops, wen we was commin’ home ina ute. (They didint get me ‘cos I jumped offa back an’ took

the shortcut throo tha paddicks.) So now Boss gotta be reel careful, he sez.

Anyway, Sharlene joined up wiva bridjes protest groop, an’ they reckin tha Matakohee Bridjis gotta be first ta be fixed.

“Eye mean, ya gotta laff deah,” she tole tha Boss. “That Nashnil candidate wot lost tha ‘lection reckin they was gonna make the bridje ina Whypoa Forist a two lane bridge. Ya no, tha one wiv two bluddy great kaury trees on either side.? Love ta see that done eh?

“But there is nothin ta stop them fixin tha Matakohee bridjis, if they are genuin about fixin’ up Northlind. An’ tha roads. Ya shud see the huge slumps ina road’s up ta Dargyville, and other places.”

“Yeah, tha’s wot tha Plumba, an Gazza, an Sailor Pete reckin ata pub,” seda Boss. But they also reckin we gotta have wot Winstin prommissed too. Yah no, a railway line ta Whongeray Port, an new warves there. She’s a pritty bluddy big shoppin’ list eh?

“Then theres roads an jobs an’ tha rest ofa bridjis, an’ skools, an’ then Winstin’s three F’s — farmin’, forestry an’ fishin’, ta boodst tha ekonimy.”

Well readas, Boss wuz getting’ all a bit too bizzy fer me ta follo, but wen’ he sed fishin’ I wonderd wot was tha problim.

Wen boss an’ his mates, goes fishin’ frum Pahi an’ Tinipai in there boats, seems ta be plenty of fish ta go roun’.

I reckin Winstin, or Mister Ki maybe, gotta koncintrate on roads an’ bridgis eh?

Cheers thenBilly

Fresh Vibe for main streetu by Ayla Miller

An iconic Dargaville cafe is spreading its wings and moving from its present arcade location into the main business area to cope with customer demand.

Fresh Vibe cafe will be relocating to their new premises at 118A Victoria Street, opening on April 15 after 12 years in McKays Arcade.

The cafe is owned by Byant Singh and managed by Ashish Rav and his wife Payal Kumar. Originally from Fiji, Ashish and Payal decided to move to New Zealand to look for work and study.

“Life was hard in Fiji and it was difficult to find work. My wife became a chef and once she graduated we started looking for a business.

“Friends were running Fresh Vibe but they wanted to return to Auckland so my father-in-law bought this cafe and we moved here.”

Over the years the cafe has kept regular customers and Ashish says there isn’t enough space during the busy hours.

“We talked about it with my father-in-law and decided to do something new. We discussed it with our customers and they agreed.

“The new premises are perfect and the location is just the icing on the cake.

“I was invited to come to the Business Forum’s welcoming drinks and I was surprised at how helpful everyone was. We love it here and would like to see the town grow. We want to get involved with the community because we are here to stay.” ¢

MARKIR DRAINAGE LTD

Getting the best for the jobThere is little excuse in this technological age for anyone to employ a cowboy tradesman.

Apart from anything else, the Internet is a quick and easy way to make sure you are hiring a fully qualified tradesman, be it a plumber, electrician, builder, glazier, or someone from another trade sector.

While the need to get things done quickly means there are tales of unqualified people taking advantage of busy households, there are plenty of checks you can make.

Industry qualifications are a government requirement. You can also get recommendations from friends or family.

The best way by far to choose a reliable plumber, electrician or builder is by word of mouth. Ask family, neighbours, colleagues or nearby friends for referrals.

It’s also worth asking industry contacts. If you’ve had a good experience with another professional, such as a roofer or an electrician, try asking them for a recommendation. Closing your eyes and stabbing a finger in local business directories to find a firm is not recommended. But there are a number of different web sites that

Training for technical perfectionCommitted to Trainingu by Andy Bryenton

As technology advances in the automotive industry, it’s not enough simply to rely on past knowledge. To achieve the highest level of service, learning has to be ongoing.

This is certainly the philosophy at Dargaville Ford, where owner Lindsay West sums it up best.

“The two most important things in any business are staff training and customer service. Without one you can’t have the other,” he says, adding that without both, there is no way to keep ahead of the market. Dargaville Ford stays ahead with the assistance of their supplier’s global vision, extending a training and skill improvement program worldwide to guarantee the best technical acuity in their workshops.

The ultimate achievement in the Ford world is the grade of Master Technician

— a qualification which is not just earned, framed and hung on the wall. Master techs must keep up with cutting edge developments, putting in hours each year to stay up to date. Dargaville Ford’s Master Technicians George and Grant are joined by experienced technicians Deon and Chris, as well as up-and-coming apprentice Adam who is halfway through his training this year.

All are proud to work with a dynamic company who are not content simply to make the most innovative vehicles on the planet — they aim to provide the ultimate level of service in support of them, too. ¢

p Practical knowledge — a late-model Focus receives a service

p Farrand and Mason have seen a lot of change over the years, encompassing the engineering, locksmithing and hardware aspects of their business. At last count, 50 apprentices have gained their qualifications in engineering here, learning the basis of a vital trade. Knowledge continues to grow in the security and key cutting business too, with a substantial investment in new technology backed up by the dedication of Kevin and his team to expand their service to customers. By fostering knowledge and keeping pace with technology, Farrand and Mason stay ahead of the curve.

FULLY QUALIFIEDElectrical services you can depend onDargaville Laser Electrical owners Jon Walker and Paul Dickens purchased the company a year ago from the previous owner who they worked with for 25 years combined.

“We decided we wanted a challenge and to try management so buying the business was obviously the next step. We both grew up here and owning the company means it has stayed in local hands,” says Jon.

Providing a wide range of electrical services across Dargaville and surrounding Kaipara, they operate with a depth of experience and knowledge to take on anything and everything electrical.

When it comes to electrical installations, their goal is to minimise stress by providing an electrician who shows up on time, is well presented, professional and carries out the job with care and skill.

“From design to finish our experienced team provide the expertise needed to ensure the electrical project is completed within critical time schedules and budgets,” he says. “We are your Totally Dependable contractor,

offering electrical services and quality workmanship. We guarantee all parts and labour.”

Formerly Dargaville Electrical Services, the company joined the fast growing Laser Electrical franchise in 2003.

This enabled them to improve their internal systems and tap into a network knowledge base which enables them to deliver a totally dependable service for all their clients. ¢
