HK OFWs from IP groups call Migrante’s de-listing as “double marginalization”

Filipino migrants in Hong Kong coming from various indig-enous groups in the Philippines made a symbolic tribal pact to call for the reversal of the decision of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to de-list of Migrante Sectoral Party (MSP) from the 2010 party-list race. Four more cyclones are expected in the Philippines this year.A new cyclone heading for the Philippines may make landfall on Saturday night (31 October), the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said. The cyclone to be code-named “Santi” may make landfall Saturday evening. But it is still at sea and far from land. It may gain strength before making landfall, pag-asa said.

According to a news report, Pagasa forecaster Elvie Enriquez said the cyclone will likely affect Eastern Visayas.“Kung magpapatuloy, sa Kabisayaan ang unang maapektu-han, Eastern Visayas, Samar, Leyte (Given its present head-ing, it will likely affect first Eastern Visayas, including Samar and Leyte). She also said that after “Santi,” at least four more cyclones are expected to enter Philippine territory.

“Dalawa sa Nobyembre, isa na lang ngayon, isa sa Disyem-bre, so apat pa, base sa nakaraan (Based on weather patterns in the past years, we expect two cyclones to enter Philippine territory in November, one more in October, and one in De-cember),” Enriquez said.

Comelec urged to junk disquali-fication raps vs EstradaMANILA, Philippines -- The Com-mission on Elections should junk the disqualification petition filed against former President Joseph Estrada because the filing of the case is still premature, his spokesperson said today (Oct. 27).

Margaux Salcedo, Estrada spokesper-son, said the former chief executive has yet to file his certificate of candi-dacy for the 2010 presidential derby.“Any case to disqualify former Presi-dent Joseph Estrada from running for president in 2010 can only be filed after he files his certificate of candidacy,” Salcedo said in a statement.

Salcedo explained that Estrada, who was convicted for plunder but later pardoned by President Arroyo, only an-nounced his intention to run for presi-dent last Oct. 21 at Plaza Hernandez in Tondo, Manila during the convention of the United Opposition (UNO).

“Therefore any petition to disqualify him at this point in time is premature, bears no justiciable controversy, and is clearly not ripe for adjudication and should be dismissed by the Comelec outright,” Salcedo emphasized.By Dennis Carcamo (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

The infamous and prolific Nigerian scam, also known as the “419 Scam,” has re-emerged and is targeting unwitting overseas Filipino workers, the Department of Foreign Affairs warned on Wednesday. In the scam, an OFW’s hacked e-mail account will send several mails to his/her contact list soliciting money from unsuspect-ing friends and relatives.

The e-mails, purportedly from the victim claiming he/she was robbed while in Nigeria, ask to remit US$2,500 in order for her to return to Manila.

“The public is advised not to send any money or divulge personal information, particularly bank ac-counts or credit card number if they receive similar e-mails,” the DFA said. According to the DFA, a Filipino national was the latest victim of the Internet-based modus operandi that has been ranked by the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency as the top Internet scam of 2007. [See: Detailed list of the top 10 Internet scams preying on OFWs] This current 418 scam is a variant of the previous Nigerian modus operandi, where a woman in Africa who claimed that her husband had died, offers to leave millions of dollars of his estate to a good business.

“In every variation, the scammer is promising obscenely large pay-ments for small unskilled tasks. This scam, like most scams, is too good to be true. Yet people still fall for this money transfer con game,” the POEA said.

Meanwhile, the DFA reiterates its warning to OFWs and their families who might be lured to remit money

Giant singkamas in Cagayan de OroMarket goers in Cagayan de Oro City are surprised to see the freshest and biggest har-vested singkamas (yam bean, native turnip or jicama) weighing more than 10 kilograms. The giant singkamas was bought from a sup-plier in Sultan Kudarat, weighed 10.6 kilos.According to vegetable distributor Minie Poquita, she has never seen a singkamas so large and heavy in her 10 years of selling vegetables. Poquita added that she even mistook the singkamas to be pumpkin.

She also revealed that she has no plans of selling the singkamas no mat-ter how much the buyer is offering to pay for it.According to the Department of Agriculture, the weight of the gi-ant singkamas in Cagayan de Oro is half of Indonesia’s world record of having a singka-mas weighing 20 kilos.

GM Paragua eyes to break Guinness recordMANILA -- Mark Paragua, the first Filipino to reach “Super Grandmaster” status, will attempt to put the Philippines in the world chess map once again as he tries to break the Guinness simultaneous chess world record in December. The attempt dubbed as “1 vs. 600: Beat the MARK”, which will pit Paragua against 600 players at the same time, will be held on December 27 and 28.

According to sports writer Noli Cruz, there will also be 400 reserves for a total of 1,000 opposing players present during the event.

The current record is held by Iranian GM Morteza Mahjoob, who faced 500 opponents simultaneously last August 13 at the Engelab Sports Complex in Tehran. The Guinness World Record for the largest number of simultaneous games played in a single session was initially set in 1996 when Swedish Grandmaster Ulf Anderson took on 310 opponents. This record was broken in 2004 by British IM Andrew Martin, who played against 321 opponents, scoring 294 wins, 26 draws and 1 loss for a winning per-centage of 95.64 percent.

In August 2005, GM Susan Polgar played against 350 players simultaneously at the Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Finally in February this year, Bulgar-ian GM Kiril Georgiev played a simultaneous exhibition against 360 opponents before the record was eventually broken by Morteza.

Paragua’s trainers for the 1 vs. 600 events will be Asia’s First GM Eugene Torre and World Chess Cup bound GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr.The event is organized by Touch of Gold Enterprises in close cooperation with the De-partment of Tourism, Manila Sports Council (MASCO) Chairman Niño dela Cruz, City of Manila, Filway Marketings Inc. CEO/ Presi-dent Hector “Chito” Tagaysay and Meralco Chess Club.

Wilfredo “Willie” Abalos of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) will head the list of International arbiters (IA) that will oversee the competition. The arbi-ters include Gene Poliarco, national masters Erwin Carag and Elias Lao and RP’s six-time executive champion Dr. Jenny Mayor.Organizers are looking to hold the event ei-ther at the historic Ninoy Aquino Stadium or the San Andres Gymnasium in Manila.ABS CBN

“Warays” set

Guinness record

Around 9,300 “Warays” from Eastern Visayas residents broke a Guinness world record on Sunday (October 18, 2009) in Palo City for a wine-tasting session which toped the previous record held at Spain with 5,095 people participants.

The event was organized by A Waray Party-list and the Leyte local government. It was held at the MacArthur Shrine where General Douglas McArthur landed upon his return to the Philippines during World War II.Initially, the number of Waray wine tasters was projected to be more than 7,000.The Leyte event was sanctioned by the Guinness Book of World Records and en-dorsed by the Philippine Coconut Authority, Philippine Tourism Authority and Depart-ment of Tourism.

The wine tasters partook of “tuba”, Eastern Visayas’ famous local brew from coconut. Tuba or bahalina, reddish in color, is the local wine staple in Eastern Visayas, mainly comprising the coconut-producing island provinces of Leyte, Samar and Biliran.Felimon Imperial Jr., wine connoisseur from the International Wine and Food Society, led the thumbs-up sign after the record-breaking feat.

“This is a very impressive gathering. I have not seen this in my 27 years as a wine ex-pert,” Imperial said, adding that the Waray tuba has the potential of making it into the global wine market.A Waray Rep. Bem Noel said the Guinness record puts the tuba wine in the world map and boosts its potential of being an export winner. “We have now conquered Spain with our “tuba.

PACMAN SHOWS OFF DEADLY FORMBy NICK GIONGCO [Manila Bulletin Sports Section – Sun Oct 04, 2009]

BAGUIO CITY – Manny Pacquiao is back to his old and deadly ways. Two days after a listless sparring session, Pacquiao put on a solid showing on Saturday against the very same man who gave his fans and fol-lowers a sickening feeling that he might be way behind in terms of preparation.

Pacquiao was almost merciless in his three-round sparring session with unbeat-en super-welterweight Shawn Porter as the Filipino’s preparation for his Nov. 14 duel with Miguel Cotto took a giant step in terms of progress.

“Relax lang kayo,” Pacquiao, smiling, told a gathering of Manila based scribes who were given the luxury of watching the entire three-hour training session at the Shape Up Gym inside the Cooyesan Hotel, the temporary residence here of the pound-for-pound king.

Pacquiao was so dominant that Portere’s trainer and father Ken kept hollering in frustration over his son’s anemic performance against the very same fellow who was just a shadow of his best two days ago.

“Masyado naman kayong kinakabahan eh,” said the 30-year-old Pacquiao, who will remain here until Oct. 24, the day his team leaves for the US to begin another phase in his training, arguably the most crucial part of preparation.

Pacquiao said the kay in beating Cotto would be movement. Lots of it, according to Pacquiao, showing the same bunch of writers exactly how by throwing his combinations in blinding speed.

Displaying intense focus, Pacquiao had the 21-year-old Porter on queer street a couple of times, circling around his much beefier sparring partner after landing his trademark left straights and quick combinations, reminiscent of the way he

frustrated and mauled the legendary Oscar De La Hoya last year.

Trainer Freddie Roach was one of the happi-est people around after watching Pacquiao workout with Porter and Urbano Antillon for an additional two rounds.

“He is starting to show a little more focus and I am happy with the sparring because this is how he should fight to win against Cotto,” said Roach.

Just before the workout ended, conditioning coach Alex Ariza reintroduced Pacquiao to the science of plyometrics, something that brought pain and punishment to the fabled fighter from General Santos City.

Plyometrics is a form of exercise using medicine balls and weird gadgets that build up strength for a fighter and reinforces his threshold for pain.

Still, Ariza assured Pacquiao that he has to undergo the same program again.

Manny Pacquiao Baguio City Last Days of Training - The back-to-back typhoons halted Pacquiao’s Baguio training, but is now back on track. Manny was able to jog in the morning when the sun was up with Jose Luis Castillo. This would be the last few days of training of Pacquiao in Baguio before moving on to Los Angeles.

Taiwan school pupils ‘made to eat fire’TAIPEI (AFP) - – Taiwanese authorities are probing child abuse claims against a school that allegedly made pupils as young as six swallow fire to boost their courage, a report said Thursday. The case came to light after parents complained that they paid 9,000 Taiwan dollars (280 US) for a five-day course only to find out that their children were asked to swallow fire, said the TVBS news channel.

Footage showed a female teacher shoving a burning home-made torch into the month of a reluctant child. The cram school, in south Taiwan’s Tainan city, also made the children walk barefoot over shattered glass and split wood with their bare hands, the TVBS reported.

“It’s like they were abusing the children. Each of the 70 or 80 children were really suffering,” an unnamed mother told the station. The course is taught by a self-proclaimed hypnosis master who boasts that his programmes can help develop the children’s potential and make them braver, reports said.

The authorities are investigating the child abuse claims, while the school also faces a fine for operat-ing without a permit, according to the reports.

New flying reptile fossils found Researchers in China and the UK say they have discov-ered the fossils of a new type of flying reptile that lived more than 160 million years ago. The find is named Darwinopterus, after famous natural-ist Charles Darwin. The 20 new fossils found in northeast China show simi-larities to both primitive and more advanced pterosaurs, also known flying reptiles. Pterosaurs, sometimes called pterodactyls, were flying reptiles that flourished between 65 and 220 million years ago.Until now scientists had known about two distinct groups of these creatures - primitive, long-tailed ptero-saurs and more advanced short-tailed ones, separated by a huge gap in the fossil record. Darwinopterus is a hawk-like reptile with a head and neck just like advanced pterosaurs - but the rest of the skeleton is similar to more primitive forms. Researchers say that this could be evidence of what they call modular evolution - where natural selection forces a whole series of traits to change rapidly rather than just one. With its long jaws and rows of sharp-pointed teeth, these creatures were very well suited to catching and killing other flying species. Their fossils were found in rocks that were 160 million years old, making them 10 million years older than the first bird.

Fossilized skull of sea monster found on UK coastLONDON – British authorities say the fossilized skull of a giant sea monster has been found off England’s southern coast. The fossil came from a pliosaur, a ferocious predator that lived in the oceans 150 million years ago.

The skull was discovered in Dorset by a collector and measures 2.4 meters (8 feet) in length. The discovery was announced Tuesday.Scientists believe the creature would have been about 16 meters (52 feet) long.

David Martill, a paleontologist from the University of Portsmouth, says pliosaurs had short necks and huge, crocodile-like heads with powerful jaws and a set of razor-sharp teeth.

He said they used paddle-like limbs to propel their bod-ies through the water and were generally carnivores. The skull will be put on display in a Dorset museum.

Iceland is losing its only three McDonald’s restaurants as a result of the poor economic situation in the country.

Businessman Magnus Ogmundsson, who owns the only McDonald’s franchise in Ice-land, said it had become too expensive to op-erate the restaurants after Iceland’s currency, the krona, plunged in value.

“The krona is quite weak and we are buying everything in euros, and we have very high tariffs on imported agricultural products,” he told CNN on Tuesday.

In January 2008, it cost more than 95 Icelandic krona to buy one euro, according to the Central Bank of Iceland. Tuesday, that price had shot up to more than 186 krona. That means the currency is worth half as much today as it was in January 2008 -- and things priced in euros now cost twice as much to buy.

Ogmundsson said the McDonald’s Corporation worked with him to find a solution, but in the end he had no choice but to close. There was “good cooperation” with McDonald’s, Ogmundsson told CNN. “No hard feelings.”

Big Macs off menu as Ice-land’s economic crisis bites

McDonald’s said it had become financially prohibitive to continue operating in Iceland because of “the unique operational complexity of doing business in Iceland combined with the very challenging economic climate in the country.”

It said there are no plans to seek a new franchise partner in that country.

The three stores will close at midnight Saturday, but they will reopen as an independent chain called Metro, with more domestic ingredients and fewer imported products.“We believe we can be more successful with our own brand,” Ogmundsson said.

A McDonald’s Big Mac hamburger currently sells for the equivalent of $5.29, making Iceland one of the most expensive places in the world to buy the sandwich. Only Norway and Switzerland charge more, according to the countries listed on the Economist magazine’s Big Mac Index, published in February.

A Big Mac costs about $3.54 in the United States, $2.19 in Australia, $5.07 in Denmark, $1.66 in South Africa, and $1.52 in Malaysia.CNN

Algae for fuelDriven by fluctuations in oil prices, and seduced by the prospect of easing climate change, experts are ramping up ef-forts to squeeze fuel out of a promising new organism: pond scum.

As it turns out, algae -- slimy, fast growing and full of fat -- are gaining ground as a potential renewable energy source.Experts say it is intriguing for its ability to gobble up carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, while living happily in places that aren’t needed for food crops.

Algae like mosquito-infested swamps, for example, filthy pools, and even waste water. And while no one has found a way to mass-produce cheap fuel from algae yet, the race is on.If the research pans out, scientists say they will eventually find a cost-effective way to convert lipids from algae ponds into fuel, and then pump it into cars, trucks and jets.

One of the factors fueling enthusiasm is algae’s big appetite for carbon dioxide -- a by-product of burning fossil fuels. The rub is bringing cost down, and production up. To do this, scientists must find cheap ways to dry algae and extract the lipids, where energy is stored.

In a remote village in the Bihar region of northeast India, in Octo-ber 2005, a woman named Poonam Tatma gave birth to an extraordi-nary child – the girl had four arms and four legs, she was destined to become famous worldwide. The newborn was the image of a multi-limbed Hindu goddess named Lakshmi, who is worshiped as a deity of wealth and good fortune. And so the child was also named Lakshmi.

After she was born, crowds of people went to see her. It was said that Lakshmi, a goddess, had been born in the place. Rajesh Kumar Singh, the village chief, have told that “A child who looks like this, with four arms and four legs, according to our scriptures, must be the Goddess Lakshmi. It’s a wonderful piece of luck to have a child born like this and surviving like this.”

The Tatma family earned the equiva-

lent of about $200 a year from farming, and couldn’t afford even basic medicines for Lakshmi. They could have profited by charging others to see her, but chose not to. They turned down an offer to sell her to a traveling circus.

Her parents, too, believed she was a goddess. But they also knew she had the needs of a disabled child. Her mother worried about how she would provide care when Lakshmi grew older. “Picking her up, sitting her down, putting her to sleep, these are the problems,” the mother said.

A social worker sent photos of Lakshmi to Dr. Sharan Patil, a leading orthopedic sur-geon at Sparsh Hospital in Bangalore, India. He marveled at the unusual pictures and decided to visit the Tatma family. After he examined Lakshmi he discovered that the lower half of her body was a type of conjoined twin called a parasitic twin.

The Doctors in India together with Dr. Sharan Patil have successfully operated the two yr old girl born with four arms, four legs and extra internal organs.

The team of around 30 medics removed what amounted to Lakshmi Tatma’s headless identical twin sister who was joined at the pelvis and who did not develop and separate properly in the womb, an extremely rare case.

Lakshmi Tatma was successfully separated from her headless identi-

cal twin sister in India.

A “miracle” baby has given a mystical hope to people in South Russia where mostly Muslim are increasingly des-perate in the face of Islamist violence.

From old to young people, hundreds of pilgrims lined up in blazing sunshine to get a glimpse of 9-month-old baby Ali Yakubov, on whose body they say verses from the Koran appear and fade every few days.

Pinkish in color and several centime-ters high, the Koranic verse “Be thankful or grateful to Allah” was printed on the infant’s right leg in clearly legible Arabic script, religious leaders said. Visiting foreign journalists later saw a single letter after the rest had vanished.

Up to 2,000 pilgrims from Russia’s 20 million Muslim population come daily to see the docile, blue-eyed baby, whose pink brick house has become a shrine.Green satin flags mark the way to the baby’s modest family home in Kizlyar, a small town of lime-colored mosques, cornfields and dirt roads whose dust bellows into the sky.

Dagestan’s omnipresent armed police patrol the house while imams change photos of Yakubov’s arms and legs

‘Miracle baby’ hope in Muslim of south Russia

covered in Arabic script from previous episodes to both jubilation and wails from the bustling crowd.

They say the fact Yakubov’s 27-year-old father Shamil works in the police force -- a regular target by militants

-- is proof of divine interven-tion.Makhachkala’s influential mayor Sayid Amirov, who has survived around a dozen

attacks on his life since the mid-1990s, interpreted the recent buzz around the baby as a warning.

“What happened here is indeed a miracle, but this should also be a message to not take religion too far,” he

told reporters.

Authorities say Islamist extremism is as responsible for the growing violence as wide-spread poverty, and experts add the insurgency is also recruiting foreign al Qaeda mili-tants who seek an Islamic state in the north Caucasus.

Holding up his right foot where a single Arabic letter remained from the latest episode, Yakubov’s 26-year-old mother Madina

said she had no doubt the verses -- which first appeared two weeks after birth -- were connected to extremism.

“Allah is great and he sent me my miracle child to keep our people safe,” she told Reuters, adjusting her tight purple hijab which crowns a multi-colored kaftan.

Though divine “miracles” are common in Christianity -- such as weeping icons and stigmata, bleeding wounds in the hands and feet similar to those of Christ -- Islam rarely has them. Outside her home, pilgrims prayed and gave thanks to Allah.

Supermarket attendant Madina Nikolayeva traveled from Ukraine to see the baby.

Baby Ali Yakubov’s leg was shown off at his house in Germany on October 19, 2009. Verses from the Koran are believed to appear on his body and fade every few days.

ne of the first ques-tions that should be asked of any woman over the

age of 35 when trying to ascertain the level of their health is do you know where your hormone levels are? Fluctuations in hormone levels, most specifically estrogen levels, can cause a myriad of health problems in women including mood swings and anxiety, loss of memory, insomnia, wrin-kles, heart disease, cramps, irregular periods, intercourse difficulties due to vaginal dryness, osteoporosis and low fertil-ity. Up to and during meno-pause, women lose up to 40% of their estrogen level.

During this time, some wom-en lose even more of their progesterone. Women lose a larger percentage of their progesterone as opposed to the estrogen they lose. This causes an imbalance between the two hormones- when the ratio of estrogen to progesterone is larger, this is known as Estrogen Domi-nance. Estrogen, is a good hormone when it works in tandem with the other hor-mones in a woman’s system and everything is working in balance. As menopause

O starts, the progesterone level drops, and although estrogen does as well, it is still dominant over the lower levels of progester-one. Aside from meno-pause, stress and dietary factors can be a factor of Estrogen Dominance if testing shows that the hormonal levels are normal. Progesterone is required for proper thy-roid function.

There are two main ways to balance Estrogen levels. One is through Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) which involves the providing of synthetic es-trogen as a replacement. However, excessive doses of synthetic estrogen can cause cancer. The second way is through natural supplementation (phytoestrogen). The benefits of this include 100% natural phytoactive ingredients, the abil-ity to balance estrogen levels, and no harmful side effects to speak of. Phytoestrogens can be obtained from legumes, vegetables and fruits, however as a woman’s digestive system ages, it is unable to absorb enough phytoestrogen. Therefore, in order to get enough of this natural substance, women should also con-sume supplements.

The benefits of phytoes-trogen include stronger bones, improves heart function, improves memo-ry, and alleviates meno-pausal symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, pigmentation, mood wings…etc. In addition, phytoestrogens

over the long run can help firm breasts, contour body shape and supple the skin, regularize periods and the soothing of period pain, improves sexual performance, and improves fertility.

Bio-Young Phytogen Plus contains phytoestrogens and is 100% natural. It is derived from two plants, Gegan Root and Kacip Fatimah, that are widely used as natural herbal supplements designed to balance estrogen levels. Gegan Root is widely used as a health food in Thailand and Kacip Fatimah has been widely used by the Malay society for many centuries.

Bio-Young Phytogen Plus does not contain any hormones, stimulants or drugs nor does it have any harmful side effects. It has been approved as a health supplement by the Ministry of Health and is available in capsule form for consumption and con-venience. Look young, feel young, stay young with Bio-Young Phytogen Plus.

In the United States, heart disease affects about 9 million adults, killing one every 37 seconds. But the good news—which Dr. Philip Ades, author of the new book EatingWell for a Healthy Heart has made it his mission to spread—is that heart-disease is mostly prevent-able. Research shows that up to 90 percent of heart disease can be prevented by changing one’s diet, exercising more, maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking. Reduce your risk by following these 10 simple steps.

Step #1: Know your numbers.High blood choles-terol is linked with about one-third of heart disease cases worldwide, accord-ing to data from the United Nations. Your blood cholesterol (lipid profile) is made up of several readings: high-density cholesterol (HDL), low-density cholesterol (LDL) and triglycer-ides (TG). LDL cholesterol and triglycerides are often referred to as “bad” cholesterol; high levels (greater than 160 mg/dL and 200 mg/dL, respectively) are considered risk factors for developing heart disease. On the other hand, “good” HDL protects against cardiovascular disease. (A healthy HDL target is 60 mg/dL or higher.) But an undesirable lipid profile doesn’t mean that developing heart disease is inevitable. Research shows that changing your diet for the better can help lower “bad” LDL and TG levels, as well as increase “good” HDL cholesterol, if they’re out of healthy ranges. Talk with your doctor about a screening. Medi-cations are sometimes needed.

Step #2: Calculate your risk.Having multiple factors for heart disease increases your risk exponentially. For ex-ample, if you smoke, have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, any one of these factors doubles your likelihood of developing heart disease in the next six years. But having all three increases your chance eightfold. The good news: treat-ing any one of these risk factors effectively—say, you quit smok-ing or bring your cholesterol into a healthy range—halves your likelihood of developing heart disease (i.e., you’ll have four times, rather than eight times, the risk of someone who doesn’t have any of these risk factors).

Step #3: Lose weight if you need to. Losing as little as 5 to 10 percent of your body weight—about 8 to 15 pounds if you start at 150—will result in better blood pressure, lower risk for diabetes and improved cholesterol levels, research sug-gests. Are you toting around too many pounds? There are two ways to find out. First, calculate your body mass index (BMI). A normal BMI is 18.5 to 24.9. A BMI of 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 and above is considered obese. Some complain that, if you are muscular or “large-boned,” you may get a BMI that suggests you’re overweight when you’re really not. To dou-ble check, Phil Ades suggests you perform the “Ades-ocular” test: Strip down to your un-derwear and stand sideways in front of a full-length mirror. If your abdomen droops or sticks out, the high BMI is correct. If it’s flat and firm, your BMI may, indeed, be incorrect.

Step #4: Slash your intake of saturated fat. Butter. Sour cream. Mayo. These foods—as well as fatty cuts of meats—are high in the saturated fats that elevate “bad” LDL cholesterol, leading to plaque buildup in arteries. Limit saturated fats to 5 percent or less of your total calories (divide your weight by 12 to get the daily total limit in grams).

10 Steps to Heart HealthFor example, try replacing but-ter with vegetable-based oils, particularly olive and canola oil, both of which contain good amounts of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, and by swapping in lean poultry, fish and beans for higher-fat meats.

Step #5: Junk the junk food. Many packaged snacks, crack-ers, bakery goods and some

marga-rines contain artificial trans fats (a.k.a. hy-drogenat-ed oils), which increase “bad” LDL even more than satu-rated fats, according

to recent research by Walter Willett, M.D., at the Harvard School of Public Health. In a 2003 interview with EatingWell, Willett blamed trans fats for millions of unnecessary prema-ture deaths from heart disease. Read labels carefully: if a pack-age claims “zero trans fat,” the amount per serv-ing may be less than 0.5 g and could have been rounded down to zero. The only way to be sure you’re getting a product without trans fats is to avoid products that in-clude “hydrogenated oil.” Better yet, stock up on nutrient-rich vegetables, fruit and nuts.

Step #6: Fill up on fiber.Various studies link a high-fiber diet with a lower risk of heart disease. In a Harvard study of female health professionals, people who ate a high-fiber diet had a 40 percent lower risk of heart disease than those who ate a low-fiber diet. Aim to include plenty of foods that are rich in soluble fiber, which, studies show, can help lower “bad” LDL. Soluble fiber binds bile acid, a key compo-nent in fat digestion that our bodies make from cholesterol. We can’t digest fiber, so when bile acids are bound to it, they get ushered out of the body as waste. This causes the body to convert more cholesterol into bile acids, which ultimately has the effect of lowering circulating cholesterol levels. Foods high in soluble fiber include oatmeal, barley, beans, okra and egg-plant, and citrus fruit, such as oranges.

Step #7: Replace refined grains with whole ones.Eating too many refined car-bohydrates (e.g., white bread, pastries, white pasta) fuels the body’s ability to make triglyc-erides. What’s more, processed grains are quickly converted to glucose, which raises blood glucose levels and may predis-pose one to developing type 2 diabetes, a risk factor for de-veloping heart disease. Choose whole grains, such as brown rice, wheat berries and quinoa and whole-wheat pastas, which contain more fiber (which slows down the conversion of starches to glucose) and health-ful fats than processed grains.

Step #8: Go fish. Consuming two or more serv-ings of fish per week is associ-ated with a 30 percent lower risk of developing coronary heart disease over the long term, studies show. Fish con-tain omega-3 fats, which lower levels of triglycerides in the blood that may contribute to blood clotting. Omega-3s also lower blood pressure slightly and can help prevent irregular heart rhythms. (Flaxseed oil, canola oil and walnuts also

contain omega-3 fats.)

Step #9: Get nuts.Research suggests that people who eat nuts—wal-nuts, pecans, almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, pine nuts and peanuts (which actually

are legumes)—two to four days or more per week have a lower incidence of heart disease than people who eat them less. All nuts contain good amounts of heart-healthy mono-unsaturated fats and low levels of saturated fats.

Step #10: Enjoy alcohol in moderation.Scientific literature indicates that people who drink moderately are less likely to have heart disease than those who abstain. Alcohol appears to raise “good” HDL cholesterol. Wine, in particular, “thins” the blood (making it less prone to clotting) and also contains antioxi-dants that prevent your arteries from taking up LDL cholesterol, a process that can lead to plaque buildup. Remem-ber, 1 drink equals 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of liquor.

Fight Fat with BreakfastWhat to eat to before your next morning workout.Eating a meal made with “slow-release” carbohydrates, such as oatmeal or bran cereal, before you exercise may help you burn more fat, suggests a recent study in the Journal of Nutrition.

Researchers assessed the rate of fat burn among eight healthy women after they ate two breakfasts: muesli with milk, peaches, yogurt and apple juice on one day; cornflakes with skim milk, white bread with margarine and jam and an energy drink on another day. Both meals contained similar amounts of calories.

The first breakfast (muesli) was a low-glycemic-index (GI) meal, the second was a high-GI meal. The glyce-mic index ranks foods based on how much they raise blood sugar. Lower-GI foods produce smaller spikes than higher-GI foods. Gener-ally, foods that contain protein, fat and/or fiber—and are digested more slowly—fall lower on the GI scale than those that consist mostly of carbohy-drate (e.g., white bread).

On the days when the women ate the low-GI breakfast, they burned nearly twice as much fat

during a 60-minute walk as they did on the days when they ate the high-GI meal. Here’s why: because the muesli (low-GI) breakfast was more slowly digested, it didn’t spike blood-glu-cose levels as high as the cornflake (high-GI) break-fast did. In turn, insulin levels didn’t spike as high either—which probably explains why the muesli-eat-ing women burned more fat, says Ian MacDonald, Ph.D., director of research at the University of Nottingham Medical School.

Insulin plays a role in signaling your body to store fat. So, lower levels of insulin might help you to burn fat. Bottom line: If you’re looking to burn more fat, pick low-GI foods, such as oatmeal, over high-GI foods, such as white toast, before your workout.

Want To Get Rid of Cramps, Bloating, Aches and Pains Related to PMs?Let’s be honest: there is nothing nice to say about PMS. And, for those of us who get every single little symptom associated with that time of the month (cramps, bloating, skin issues, headaches, etc.) there’s a few choice words we’d love to use. But, we have yet to hear if using profanity actually helps alleviate pain (please let us know if you hear otherwise), so until that’s true we’ve found 11 tips on how to deal with PMS that actually work:

1. If your periods make you nauseous, try eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day, or try an OTC anti-inflammatory medicine paired with a heat-ing pad right below where you feel your cramps.

2. Watch what you eat a few days before you get your period. Eating salty foods or consuming drinks high in caffeine during these days can make you feel worse dur-ing your monthly cycle.

3. Take a chill pill! Your cramps may be directly related to how stressed out you are.

4. Complex carbs are good for you during your period.

5. Giving up caffeine and hitting the gym a week before your period will elevate your mood.

6. Keep a calendar. If your symp-toms seem to last a lot longer than your normal period cycle, you might want to check in with your doctor.

7. Drinking iced tea instead of soda during your period will help prevent bloating and nix your sugar fix.

8. Eating iron-rich foods during your period will help elevate your mood.

9. Drinking hot liquids throughout the day will help ward off cramps.

10. Taking a calcium supplement can help ward off serious PMS symptoms.

11. Ginger can help ease cramps.

Foods that help you concentrate

sugar Can enhance AlertnessSugar is your brain’s preferred fuel source -- not table sugar, but glucose, which your body metabolizes from the sugars and carbohydrates you eat. That’s why a glass of something sweet to drink can offer a short-term boost to memory, thinking processes, and mental ability.Consume too much, however can impair memory.

Blueberries Are super nutritiousResearch in animals shows that blueberries help protect the brain from oxidative stress and may reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Studies also show that diets rich in blueberries significantly improved both the learning capacity and motor skills of ag-ing rats, making them mentally equivalent to much younger rats.

Fish Really is Brain FoodA protein source associated with a great brain boost is fish -- rich in omega 3 fatty acids, essential for brain function and development. These healthy fats have amazing brain power: higher dietary omega 3 fatty acids are linked to lower dementia and stroke risks; slower mental decline; and may play a vital role in enhancing memory, especially as we get older. For brain and heart health, eat two servings of fish weekly.

Avocados and Whole GrainsEvery organ in the body depends on blood flow, especially the heart and brain. Eating whole grains and fruits like avocados can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and enhance blood flow, offering a simple, tasty way to fire up brain cells.Whole grains, like popcorn and whole wheat, also contribute dietarsy fiber and vitamin E, while avocados have fat -- but a good-for-you, monounsaturated fat that contributes to healthy blood flow.

Hollywood Weight Loss SecretsIt’s true: Those totally toned celebs you’ll see on the Oscars this month have more time to work out than the rest of us, and more money to spend on doing it. ->“Be accountable for each

mouthful.”Most people eat emotionally. We constantly put food into our mouths unconsciously.

Keep a food journal, and learn about portion sizes and

the actual calorie counts in foods so you really under-

stand what you’re eating. It’s not about starving yourself;

it’s about being fully aware of what is going into your body.

Lucy Liu (pictured)“Approach working out with gratitude.”Exercise is not a chore; it’s a privilege. Think, How lucky I am that I found time in my busy schedule for myself and to take care of my body.Sandra Bullock (pictured)

<--“Be virtuous.”If you knock out your workout first thing in the morning, you will carry a feeling of achievement and virtuousness with you all day. It sets the tone. This sense of virtue willinfluence other aspects of your life. You will make healthier and smarter food choices.

“Celebrate the body you have.”You have to start by appreciating the body you have. Life is a gift, and we must rise to the occasion. You can become your poten-tial if you focus on three things: mind-set, motivation, and movement. They encom-pass the emotional, the spiritual, and the physical. You have the right and the power to change your body. The more secure you are, the more you love yourself, the easier it is to make physical changes occur. I believe in mindful exercise and nutrition. There are no mindless movements. Everything you do should have

a purpose. Put your mind into each muscle you are working on to control the effectiveness of your workout,

and into each bite of food you are ingesting. By doing so, you can self-police and self-correct. Take a moment,

pause, and think about why you are doing something and what its effect will be. By shaping and toning your

body on the outside, your inner core and internal self will become stronger. And by properly enriching your

body with whole foods and key supplements, your inner health will appear externally. It’s the yin and the yang.

Be conscious. Transform your life.

OFW DURING SUNDAYS“Kulang ang araw if we don’t go to church.”

Maria Teresa Barce and Priscilla Relano are active members of the New Life Fellowship under the United Pentecostal Church in Ken-nedy Town. In an interview with Kabayan Star both friends shared that they prefer to spend their rest day on Sundays in the church to attend fellowship, join activities offered by their church. “Kulang ang araw namin kapag di kami nakapunta sa church. We are interested to learn the words of God. It is better to listen to the words of God,” they said.

Liberty M. Antazo, 59Ate Liberty has 4 grown up sons, two of them are in Canada and she is waiting for her visa to join them. She has been working in Hong Kong for 28 years. At her age she looks younger and she feels energetic. “Kahit na pagod ako sa maghapong trabaho ay malakas pa rin ang pakiramdam ko kaya masaya ako”, she said. Three years na akong gumagamit ng RICA Royal Jelly at Omega 3 kaya siguro hindi ako madaling dapuan ng sakit, matagal na rin akong hindi nagpapaduktor. I also introduce Chlorella AI to my sister who has mayoma, dati daw sumasakit pero okay na sya pagkatapos mag RICA. “Prevention is better than cure” ika nga.

Miralona Coates,54Tita Miralona is a chief cook in of the eatery in Hong Kong. She started her career since she ar-rived the territory. In the 2004, she was diag-nosed to have mayoma that attracted her to use the RICA Food Supplement Chlorella AI. She heard that this Food Supplement is a very effec-tive Body Cleanser. “Health conscious talaga ako kaya pag may narinig akong maganda na connected sa nararamda-man ko sinusubukan ko,” she said. For her you will never know the effective-ness of a medicine or food supplement if you don’t try.She used Chlorella Ai for more than a year before she decided to be operated. “Hindi na sana ako ooperahan ng doctor ko dahil after more than 1 year na gu-mamit ako ng RICA Chlorella Ai sinabi-han ako na lumiit na ang aking mayoma at hindi ko na kailangan ma-operahan although pwede ko pa ring ipatanggal,” Miralona said. She was operated and her doctor was amazed because she was very strong and she had only 3 days healing. “Kinumpare ako sa mga ibang pasyente kasi ang bilis na heal ang mga sugat ko sa loob at labas.”

not forgotten anything on your list. Some items are not visible: legal expenses for example (licence to operate a shop, business registration…).

The second step is to sort out your list… which might be very long. We are going to sort it out in 3 blocks: first of all, some items last several years: you only buy them when you start your business, not after: these items are called the “one-off costs”. You can put them aside: they will im-pact your numbers the first year only (fitting your shop, furniture, tools, etc…). The second block is the “recurring costs”: things you need to keep buying. This big block can be split in two: the recurring fixed costs and the recurring variable costs. What’s the difference? Fixed costs are items that you have to buy even if you produce one product. In a photo printing shop for example, you need machines to print photos even if you have one customer: whatever the number of customers, you need one machine. The cost of the machine does not depend on the numbers of customers. Many one-off costs may well be fixed. On the contrary, variable costs depend on how many cus-tomers buy your products: the printing paper or the ink, in our example: the more you print photos for customers, the more you have to buy paper and ink.

Then, you need to put numbers in front of each item. For one-offs and fixed, take your best esti-mate: research costs in the area you are planning to set up your business. You can write “ranges” (low cost-high cost). Take notes on the quality and options. For variable costs, take your calculations of income: you had done an estima-tion of the volume you are planning to sell. So for this volume, how much will it take you to make the prod-uct (or service)? Make sure the quantities fit for every month! Check the logic and consistency. If you plan to serve 50 meals in your restaurant per day and you plan to buy ingredients for

a + b = 3 LtdFinancial Literacy - Because money is more than adding up figures

Business Plan (5): planning expenses

30 meals, your calcula-tions will give you a wrong idea of your profit! Take notes on other inter-esting pieces of informa-tion: is there a deposit to pay in advance? Can this item be sold only in very big quantities? Is it perishable? For some businesses like grocery or restaurant, include some wastage. You may not be able to exactly buy how much you will sell before the food gets too old.

You’re nearly there! On your big piece of paper, you now have a list of your incomes and all your costs. Sum all the expenses and deduct them from the income to find out if your business is likely to be profitable. Accountants fine-tune this calculation, because they don’t take the full costs of machines, equip-ments, etc… (“assets”) but spread it over 3, 5 or more years. But that gives you a first idea. Because of the one-off costs, it is likely that your first months won’t be profit-able. What you should check is (1) if your busi-ness is profitable after the “setting up” phase, (2) how long it takes your business to make a profit (6 months? 3 years?). How are you going to live and cover your living expenses while your busi-ness is not profitable yet? You should also review the list of your business expenses (are all of them absolutely necessary to run your business?).The time you spend list-ing your future incomes and expenses is critical for your project: prepare your project as much as you can, running a busi-ness is a long journey!

In our next column, we’ll look at calculating the second statement: the cash flow. In the mean-time, happy calculations! If you want to share you stories or questions: send me an email: [email protected] or read www.aandbmake3.com. enrich, our not-for-profit partner in Hong Kong, gives courses on money matters (T: 2817.8928).

This ar-ticle is the fifth in our busi-

ness series. In our previ-ous column, we talked about numbers. The main (and maybe only) reason that you want to set up your own business is … to get money. So before you start, you have to make sure that your business is likely to make money. There are two ways a business makes money: it can be profitable and it can generate cash. We will focus on cash in our next column. What is profit? It is how much sales exceed expens-es: if you sell $10,000 and spend $6,000, your profit is $4,000. To calculate it, we use a list of incomes and expenses called “income statement”. Last month, we saw how we can plan incomes. This time, let’s see how we can forecast expenses.

Where can you start? … By a game! Take a big piece of paper and close your eyes. It is the first day of your business! You have just opened it! What do you see? What do you need? Write everything that comes to your mind: where are you: do you need a shop? A workshop? An office? Land? Do you operate from home? What supplies do you need: furniture? Computer? Ani-mals? Electricity? Internet access? How do you make your products or services? What do you need to buy to make them? Do you need to buy goods or material long in advance? How do you sell them? How do you promote your business and make people know it? For example, if you plan to open a restau-rant, you need a prem-ise, a kitchen, utensils, cooker, plates, cutlery, napkins, water, electricity, ingredients, cashier, etc… Just list everything you need. The trick is to avoid forgetting anything. If you are not sure, you can go (as a customer) and visit a similar business and look around to see if you have

Filipinos in JapanDespite Japan’s own economic woes, the country continues to attract foreign workers from other Asian Countries. Since the mid-80s, the arrival of foreign workers in Japan has been increasing in numbers, with Filipinos having the significant portion of the total foreign work-ers’ population. In 1998, the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo reported that 245,518 Filipinos were living in Japan. This figure included 129,053 Filipino entrants and residents, 36,777 are entertainers, 39,268 spouses or children of Japanese nationals, and 40,420 overstaying Filipinos. In 2006, Japanese/Filipino marriages were the most frequent of all interna-tional marriages in Japan.Japan’s regions with significant population are Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya and Okinawa.

Her 4 nephews were well disciplined and are matured, “natuto sa buhay”

This month KabayanSTAR’s OFW of the month is a single mother. I’ve known her for almost a year, all I know she is married.

On September she told me that she is going home “magpapakasal ako,” she told me. I thought it’s her son who’s getting married. She came back from her vacation with her one and only left sister and we were so delighted in watching their pictures. In mind I appreciated her closeness with her elder sister Ate Rosie; I’ve been witnessing how close they are.

Lily, 55 years old is single. She has been working in Hong-Kong for 23 years. She worked for 14 years in her first employer. And in her second employer she has been working for 9 years together with her Ate Rosie, but Ate Rosie has been working in this employer for 23 years.

In Ate Lily and Ate Rosie’s family they were 16 children, but 8 of them died during the World war 11. 8 of them survived but unluckily 6 died at young age because of hypertension and heart attacks. “Nasa lahi naming ang high blood/hypertension kaya ever since ay naging health conscious kami ni ate

as they say. She was so impressed when her first 2 nephews who have finished in their studies talked to her and told her that they can both help their younger brothers. Since then she just send the 2 younger nephews their allowances. After the last nephew graduated she was very happy.

Both sisters’ looks younger than their ages; they are healthy and very jolly at their ages. I asked them to share their secrets. “Ang sekreto namin ay ang aming pagiging kontento sa buhay. Pag kontento tayo sa buhay mas masaya, pag walang maraming “sana” mas magaan sa dibdib.

At dahil kaming dalawa nalang ang natitirang magkapatid siyempre dapat kaming magmahalan and take care of each other,”

they said. Most maids working in the same house usually have problems.

HAPPY FALL! From one pumpkin to another!!!!!!! A woman was asked by a coworker, ‘What is it like to be a Christian?’

The coworker replied, ‘It is like being a pumpkin.’ God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, and greed. Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.’ This was passed on to me by another pumpkin. Now it’s your turn to pass it to other pumpkins. Send it to all the pumpkins in your patch!

READER’S CHOICE14 christian living

Today we want to help you honor God in suffering. We’ll prepare you to face whatever difficulty you may have now or may face in the future.

One problem about handling hardships in life is incorrect understanding of the reality of suffering. We think that all sufferings are bad for us. We then get discourage and lose our joy in God and zest for life. Worst, we often blame God for our sufferings and accuse him for lack of care.

Do you want this help? I’m sure you do. But here’s one very important thought for you: you have an opportunity to honor God every time you experience hardship of any kind.

One prepares by learning what God says about suffering. The Bible states that suffering was not a part of God’s original intention. Suffering is a consequence of man’s fall into sin. Genesis 3 tells us about the immediate effect: alienation between God, the all loving-Creator and man, the all needy-creature. Sin also affected human relationships.

What was a loving and adoring man would now turn against his beloved wife. I must point here that neither Adam nor Eve were cursed; only the snake (v 14) and the soil (v. 17) are cursed because of man. The sentences on the man and the woman take the form of disruption and malfunction of their appointed roles.

In Romans 8 the apostle Paul provides further insight to the effect of sin on the universe. Adam and Eve brought down the whole creation with them. He describes God’s judgment this way: “creation was subjected to futility” (Romans 8:20). The once perfect environment that God created for humans has now become imperfect; unfit to carry on its divinely ordained

purpose. As man’s futility is his assumption that he is an independent creator, failing to see that he is but a creature, so creation now turns against mankind. This explains floods, earthquakes, droughts, and other natural calamities.

Sufferings then show the fallenness within creation. “Ondoy”, “Pepeng” and “Ramil” and the horrifying devastations and sufferings they caused only tell us what is wrong with our world. But there is something more that these catastrophes tell us: they show the incredible hope we have as God’s children in his wonderful redemption plan! Every pain and suffering in this life point to the new heavens and the new earth where the curse of sin is gone, where there will be no more dying, crying, hurting, and sinning. That is the hope that we have - a prepared home in heaven, to live with our God, to be his people forever.

But Romans 8 does not merely address the cosmic problem. This chapter tells us about our hope in Christ and what God will do with creation. Here’s the good news: God will restore creation to its original purpose, to provide a fitting environment for God and his redeemed children. Sufferings, of any kind then, serve as a call from God to turn away from sin and to return to him.

But there is one more question that must be addressed: “Who is responsible for natural calamities?” Answers vary. Some think man is to be blamed. We have denuded our forests, we have not protected our environment and therefore, “ang basurang itinapon mo, ay basurang babalik sa iyo.” This view is correct, but not complete.

Others blame Satan for natural calamities. Someone sent me an email from a fellow pastor who warns people

about blaming God for natural disasters. This brother insists that Satan is to be blamed for all these destruction. Actually, he is right to some point. The Book of Job was written to teach us about the mystery of sufferings. The book shows that Satan has something to do with calamities and human sufferings. He wants to destroy God’s people and turn them against their loving Father.

But Job, as well as the other writers of the Bible, insists that Satan is not ultimate. God is. Satan may cause sufferings, but not without God’s permission. God is sovereign, meaning he is in control over everything that happens, good and bad. I know this is a difficult truth to embrace. We prefer to cling to a God that is loving, caring, protecting, and keeping his children from pain. Sadly, this view misrepresents God. God is holy. He is both merciful and righteous. He must judge sin. He punishes sin.

Sufferings then are a blend of judgment and mercy. Those who rebel against God suffer as a judgment now in anticipation to the eternal judgment that will come. God’s people suffer differently. They suffer, like everybody else. They experience pain and loss just like everyone else. But they don’t suffer as judgment; they suffer under the merciful hand of God.

How then do we honor when we suffer? Let me share five ways: First, you honor God by embracing suffering when they come to bring about God’s purposes. We flee from suffering. This is our natural response. But when it becomes clear that God sends or allows the suffering, then we should embrace

them as part of God’s loving discipline. (Philippians 1:29; Romans 5:3-5; James 1:2-5, 12; Hebrews 12:11). There should be no place for bitterness, complaining, self-pity, but only

humble submission to God’s will. Second, honor God when you unlearn self-reliance, and learn to depend completely on God (2 Corinthians 1:8-9; 12:9-10).

Third, you honor God by enduring and not giving up when you suffer. Keep following

Jesus even when he leads you to difficult places and circumstances. Fourth, God is deeply honored when we quietly submit to him, trusting in his goodness and wisdom. Finally, we honor God when we show compassion to those who suffer, and do acts of mercy showing God’s love. Sufferings call us to action.

Aries Mar 21-Apr 20

Career and/or social status will undergo a tense period. You’ll have lofty aspirations but you’ll also have obstacles or delays. There’ll be situations forcing you to become aware of the need to have solid professional and even personal aims. You’ll need tenacity and strategy to get where you want to or a change of vision to cope with your obligations and limits better. You can benefit from support, but not interest-free. The financial sector will be very active, but very risky as well. High expenses are in store for you, so keep some reserves! You need relaxation. Too much tension is of no good for you. Try not to work overtime or take work home, but to spend your free time resting or having fun with friends. Have a massage, drink some anti-stress tea, use lavender salts when bathing, and eat bananas take magnesium!

Capricorn Dec 22- Jan 20

Career will be in a dynamic period. You’ll look for success and you’ll even try to support it by bold initiatives, sometimes even excessive. You’ll interact with the others very energetically, and it can very well lead to advantageous associations or a very tough conflict. There are chances for new contracts or collaborations, but they will prove to be stressful and irritating. Lack of measure can negatively take its toll on your finances. Under no circumstances can you complain about not being energetic. On the con-trary, you seem to have an excess difficult to deal with and you might find yourself in a continuous state of over stimulation. The dangers lurking around you will only come out of your own imprudence and tendency towards excesses.

Aquarius Jan 21- Feb 19

With Mars in Leo, in the house of representation, promotion initiatives will have results, though you’ll be inclined to overestimate it. Collaborations might get into a deadlock. Even if you get admiration for your qualities as a leader and organizer, the others might not appreciate your dominating manner in which you’re trying to impose yourself. You might feel the urge to invest or to start bigger financial operations. Risky procedures can be failures though. And you’ll be spending too much. For your health, you desperately need exer-cising. It’s a priority.

Pisces Feb 20- Mar 20

November 2009 will bring work under pressure, obligations and emergencies. The professional sector will be over tense. You’ll be efficient and you’ll be able to accomplish special things now, because it’s time for decisive actions that will require energy and courage. But you’ll need discipline and rigor. A refrac-tory attitude can be sanctioned by the superiors, and haste and carelessness imply the risk of work tools breaking down or even of accidents during work.Financially, there can be tension or deadlocks. Saving and prudence are recommended. Attention to over solicitation, because your body can react negatively to stress! Infections, inflammations, acute fits will find appropriate environment to manifest. It’ll be a good period for medical check-ups and even for dental or surgical interventions, if necessary.

Collaborations, especially the long-distance ones, will be troublesome, business trips annoying, while professionally, you might feel the absence of an expertise. In the work relationships, you’ll overreact. At home, the agitation will get bigger: you’ll mend, redecorate, move... In a more pessimistic scenario, family discussions might occur or some stress related to properties or durables. You’ll tend to exaggerate with anything that concerns career and money. Your body has a well-known resistance. But you don’t have to completely rely on it, because there are also risk periods. You’ll have such a period, and your health will need constant monitoring.

Taurus Apr 21-MAY 21

Gemini May 22-Jun 21

Your profession will demand a lot of your energy and you’ll have to face major solicitation, but you can accomplish special things. An unexpected career opportunity can pop up at any time, so get ready to take it positively. Financial-ly, something won’t go as scheduled: there will be some obstacles, restrictions or delays. Trips, information or studies seem to get a particular perspective. In the second half of November 2009, there’ll be an increase in the importance of contracts, of collaborations and teamwork. With a New Moon and a lot of transits through the house of health, there’ll probably be a stronger preoccupa-tion for health. It might not be related to disease, but rather to an interest in the lifestyle, eating habits, diets, supplements or body hygiene.

Libra Sep 24- Oct 23

Sagittarius Nov 23-Dec 21

Trips, communication and studies will be at their peak, will get your at-tention focused and will tend to attract events. Beware of what you say, write or sign! Some troubles occurred from mysterious reasons can question success at one point. Business and finances don’t go with friendship, so you’d better not let them mix! You’ll be in a period of minimum physical resistance, in which you’ll need more rest and a more balanced lifestyle. Vulnerability at catchy dis-eases, poisoning and breathing ailments will rise. And you’ll be slightly prone to depression, which is not a characteristic thing to you. You’d better avoid or cut down on substances that are not good for you and lead to addiction: ciga-rettes, alcohol, medicines, etc.

Scorpio Oct 24- Nov 22

It will be a favorable period for you to show both your aptitudes and talents, as well as your personal charm. Ambitions will be high, maybe not exactly according to the possibilities - but sometimes a very motivated Scorpio can accomplish the impossible. You have the strength and the desire to fight for what you want. However, you’d better show more flexibility, avoid obsessions and fixed ideas. As for the rest, the door to success is open! With the Sun and, later, with Venus in your sign, you’ll be in a cheerful and optimistic mood and you’ll enjoy a very good physical shape. There’s one problem, though: the tendency towards excesses and to break limits which, when out of control, can cause problems.

It’s possible that you’ll already start feeling the burdening presence of Saturn: some difficulty, a restriction or responsibilities that won’t let you act as you wish, moreover, it’ll drastically take away of your good mood. Professionally, you’ll be very motivated by the financial aspect. The opportunity of earning money will mobilize your efforts, and efforts bring money. In this regard you’ll be very resourceful. November even promises to bring money, presents and other material advantages. Even if Saturn has entered Libra, physically you’ll have enough resources to feel ok. Mars and Jupiter will take care of that. Psychologically, it’s not excluded that you’ll feel tense or you’ll experience some anxiety that might somehow be related to a domestic issue, or to real estate or parents.

Virgo Aug 23- Sep 23

Dynamic month with trips, meetings, discussions and procedures. Intellectual preoccupations will be favored, but they could become stressful. Papers, documents, verbal or written communication risk causing incidents. You could do with a bit more discretion, because November 2009 can easily bring to surface things that would better remain secret or confidential. Finances will require close monitoring. Saturn has left Virgo and you should relax and look at life with more optimism.

Leo Jul 23-Aug 22

The same Mars that stirs your passions up will monitor you professionally. You’ll be going through a period (that will last for a good few months!) of ambition and initiative, action and efficiency. The competitive spirit will be catalyzed, the leader abilities will manifest energetically. Now more than ever, you want to prove who you are and what you can achieve. Instinctively, you’ll tend to mark your influence territory, even if this means having small wars at the barrier. Aspirations will be high, sometimes too high. Financially, you’ll face the risk of waste and of hazardous actions. You have no limits. You’re ready to take risks without thinking of dangers or consequences. If no prudence at all is shown, you can find yourself in the middle of a conflict or as the victim of an accident. Excesses can harm you right now or there can be later consequences.

Cancer Jun 22-Jul 22

Money is on top of preoccupations. In the professional area, things tend to get hectic, and the purpose seems to be still pecuniary. Things will fall in their places in the second part of the month and especially in the last 10 days of November 2009 that can be a successful period. With Mars and Jupiter on the axis of finances (for you, Leo-Aquarius), there might occur high earnings, but there’s also the risk of some losses or unplanned expenses. Don’t rush into anything, don’t speculate! You’ll be inclined towards imprudence, accidents and acute diseases that will worsen throughout November 2009, the last 10 days being the most risky. Psychically, you’ll feel comfortable though. You know how to spend time pleasantly, which will be relaxing.
