The theme of the evening was “Growth Mindset” which is one of the strategies we have used this year to promote powerful learners. It was a successful night and I am sure there are many proud parents. I personally congratulate all award winners and parcipants and as I stated in my speech not everyone can win an award on the night but powerful learners connue to challenge themselves as it will be them one day. Our students acquied themselves brilliantly and it was great to see so many families aending. For some parents it was nged with a lile bit of sadness as this is the last year they will have a student at KCS. I am one of those who have had a long associaon with the school as a parent. There have been many highs and some lows but we have moved forward and I know our Year 12 students are eagerly awaing their results next Tuesday 20th December and they are excited to begin the next phase of their learning journey. We wish them well and I will keep you updated as to their desnaons. I thank all students, families and community members including MP Tony Pasin, Robe Deputy Mayor Harvey Nolan and Kingston District Councillor Jeff Pope, our invited speaker Jarrod Gilbert and Governing Council Chairperson Catherine Wright for their aendance and parcipaon on the night. Our SRC President and Vice President Jack Sneath and Jack Armfield along with staff leader Kirsten Barich helped ensure the evening ran smoothly. The gym was beaufully adorned with the results of student work in learning areas so the scope and sequence of work from Recepon to Year 12 could be seen. Another highlight of the week was our R-7 assembly where we celebrated the graduaon of our Year 7 students and congratulated those students who received personal best awards for Semester 2. Families should be very proud of their student’s achievements throughout the year. In preparaon of both these significant events, many hours of preparaon were undertaken by our staff and students, and I would like to thank them very much for their outstanding efforts at such a busy me of the year. Every year we say this is it, but then the growth mindset kicks in and we go again. Having said that, feedback for us to connue to improve our ceremonies, would be appreciated. I would also like to thank Lyn Leach and Phil Obst who will both take long service leave in 2017 before transioning to rerement. Both have over 40 years of dedicated service to the educaon of children with 31 years and 34 years of service respecvely, at Kingston. They are now entering the next phase of their lives and it is with sadness and excitement that we wish them well on their journey ahead. We also farewell and thank Barbara Richards, Lisa Pointon and Ally Lumsden for the quality teaching they have provided here at school and we wish them well as they take up new opportunies in 2017. Thank you also to Kathryn- Lawrie Read, Alice Tro and Sally Mason whose contracts are finishing this week. We hope to be able to connue our associaon with these teachers in some capacity in 2017. With endings come new beginnings and it is with great pleasure I announce that Maddison Lawrie (HASS/English) and Phillip Pojer (Science/Biology) will join our team for 2017. There are a number of other posions that are yet to be finalised by Human Resources but I will announce those next week. The leadership posions for 2017 have been approved by HR and I congratulate Chrisna Evere (Assistant Principal), Kirsten Barich (Teacher Pedagogies), Kae Hines (Powerful Learners) and Samantha Murdock (Wellbeing). AUSTRALIA DAY WINNERSCongratulations to Year 12 student, Emily Edwards, who has been named as the Kingston District Council Young Citizen of the Year in the Australia Day Awards for 2017. As a student of KCS, Emily has made a very visible impact upon her school and community, and is held in high regard by both students and staff. She is highly determined to succeed and has challenged herself by becoming involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities.

Emily was nominated by KCS for her academic achievements, as well as her consistent involvement in SRC, the agriculture committee, TfEL workshops, the led steer and merino wether show teams, sporting activities, the DECD learning centre at the Adelaide Show and for her current efforts in fundraising and participating in the Cows for Cambodia program. She regularly volunteers her time to assist in school activities, including at the Election Day fundraiser and on Harmony Day. In addition to school commitments, Emily has been heavily involved as a coach and player in the Kingston District and Kingston Saints Netball Clubs and the Kingston Tennis Club, has assisted in a variety of fundraising activities. She has an enviable set of skills and does not waiver in her determination to achieve highly and contribute to her community. Well done, Emily! KirstenBarich

Visual Arts students from year 6 to 10 have created a sculpture from rubbish that has been collected from our local beaches. The purpose of the artwork is to raise awareness about the damage caused by plastic rubbish to our marine environment. Ghost nets are fishing nets which have been lost or abandoned at sea where they continue to catch fish and other forms of marine life. Eventually the trapped marine life dies.

Year 6 students created this sculpture of a Green Turtle from plastic rubbish. It is an expression of their concern on hearing about the turtle that was recently rescued from a local beach. Mistaking a plastic bag for a jelly fish, it had eaten it. The turtle had the plastic surgically removed.

Both sculptures are currently on display at the Kingston Visitor Information Centre.

COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR 2017

Kingston Community School was very proud to be associated with the Kingston Area School Reunion which has been awarded the 2017 Community Event of the Year.

Many students, parents and staff were volunteers over the weekend, assisting with school tours, displaying memorabilia, photocopying old photographs and gathering resources in the school archives for presentations.

The school hosted one of the main events of the weekend, the Roll- Call, prior to a luncheon for old scholars in the Football clubrooms.

Proceeds from the event benefitted several local not for profit organizations including the Community Library, RFDS and local branch of the National Trust.

The reunion was attended by more than 250 ex Kingston Area School students and staff members.

Thank-you to the staff, parents and students who assisted with the weekend and congratulations to Jan Williams and Trevor McKinnon ex Kingston Area School Students who organised the weekend.

YEAR 8 - WEEK 9 ACTIVITIES

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Our reception students decorated gingerbread reindeer and castles as a part of their German programme. Gingerbread is a traditional Christmas biscuit in Germany and is often also made in Australia at Christmas time, hence allowing the students to identify a similarity between the two cultures.

Special thanks to Mrs Brown for making the gingerbread biscuits for us.

RECEPTION GERMAN CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES

This year, we once again ran swimming carnival for our middle year students on a beautiful bright sunny day. Congratulations to everyone who participated, your effort and determination to support your house team and other house teams was tremendous to see. It was great to see so many parents and students cheering on our swimmers.

I would like to thank all parents who assisted with jobs and came to support their children, it created a great atmosphere. A large thank you must go to the Year 11 PE students who assisted with the scoring and timing this year.

All students who attended did a marvellous job and I was very proud of everyone who participated. Multiple students must be commended on their efforts as 8 records were broken this year. Well done to the following students on breaking these records:

Hagan Wright: Year 8 Male 100m Freestyle

ABORIGINAL INDIGENOUS GARDEN PROJECTIn 2016 the aboriginal indigenous garden has been established at the entrance of the Kingston Community School by Kathy Bell (indigenous garden project officer), Doug Nicholls (aboriginal community education worker) and the many students and teachers of KCS who contributed. The establishment was in consultation with the Aboriginal Reference Group –Teachers and Community representatives and with student voice representatives Aaron Clarke and Harrison Barker.

The garden is a tribute to the friendship of two women in the community and it also pays respects to the traditional owners of our country on which we meet, teach and play each day. It is a meeting place, a place of reconciliation, a place to share knowledge and stories. The Swan is a totem of the aboriginal people and the design sits beautifully at the entrance of the school with a variety of indigenous plant species on display for recognition of resources on country. We will be able to teach and raise awareness about aboriginal culture and the caring of country. We can acknowledge the healing process and reflections of the past, the living culture in the present time and supporting future activities and wellbeing of our community through the children who are our future.

Last week we enjoyed the fruits of our labour with a thankyou BBQ. Students made bush tucker burgers and then were treated with a celebration muntrie cake and a boomerang throwing session with Doug. Thank you to all who contributed to the garden project this year, it has been great working with you and a positive project for our community. We are very proud of what we have achieved with the garden and bringing it together with student engagement and ownership.

Next year we will be organising a formal opening ceremony, signage and some mosaics to complete the project. We also have some exciting plans to establish some nature play areas and some bush tucker production throughout 2017.

I look forward to returning next year to work with the school community on these projects.

YEAR 7 TO 8 TRANSITION

Year 7 students from both Kingston and Robe have just spent 4 days together learning about secondary schooling and getting to know each other. Students spent two days going to lessons with secondary teachers and two days working together, talking about expectations for next year and participating in lots of team building activities.

Both students and staff enjoyed the time together and Kingston Community School is looking forward to having students become members of the year 8 cohort in 2017.

Page 7: K C S · 2016. 12. 16. · K C S Honesty . Personal Best . Respect . Friendliness . Responsibility Principal: Ms Lucretia Tocaciu Newsletter 13: 15 December 2016 46 East Terrace,

Earlier this year, Clayton and I were asked to create a question we want scientists to answer in the future. Our question was “Is it possible for scientists to create a 3D printer that could print organs, tissues and neural pathways that contain unique DNA to fit the individual?” The scientists at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) clearly liked our curiosity and allowed for us to spend a week in Sydney at ANSTO, along with students from 11 other schools nationwide, in order for us to answer our question. By the end of the week we had come up with a theory of how this could be done and how close scientists are to actually completing this. With talking to biologists we discovered that it is now possible to grow organs and tissues by manipulating the ways stem cells function. Also over in China, there was a recent discovery that scientists took codes, using a computer, out of DNA and were able to alter the DNA into what they wanted. This potentially means China have almost invented a way to make specific DNA. If scientists were to combine both these methods then both Clayton and I believe that theoretically this is a possibility for the close future.

Throughout our week we also learnt about the different areas of science including biology, physics and chemistry. Each day we spent with different professional scientists that had an interest in our question. This was amazing as they explained their careers and their career pathways and got us involved in different experiments. The teaching techniques differed as we found some of the scientists

liked to be more practical or theoretical than others and also these techniques were used when different scientists came together to discover new aspects of science. We were lucky enough to go on the ground floor where many instruments were located in order for scientists to use in their experiments. We were lucky enough to visit Australia’s only nuclear reactor and see an electron laser in person. Although the week was packed with science we also had lots of free time when we would go to the games room and hang out. On the last night we decided to play a game of ‘hide and seek chasey” but it did not occur to us that we were staying in a nuclear high security area so this ended with alarms being sent to the federal police who later arrived and saw about 22 kids running around chasing each other on a worldwide nuclear facility.

This experience was extraordinary and was a massive eye-opener for Clayton and myself as we opened our minds and learnt things we never knew existed. The friendships we made on this trip are unforgettable and I personally still keep in touch with them as much as I can, thanks to social media. I would also like to thank Ms Toc and Miss Lumsden as these two wonderful ladies took both their personal and work time in order to assist Clayton and I, in Sydney and we are both very grateful for this experience.

Tennis and Cricket Carnivals were held during Week 6 in Adelaide. Kingston was represented by Zara Lewis and Joshua Troeth (Tennis) and James Little, Jack Harding, Ethan Cornish and Will Wiseman (Cricket).

This was the final carnival in what proved to be a busy, successful and enjoyable SAPSASA programme in 2016. Kingston students attended trials and many were successful in representing the Upper South East in many regional teams including Hockey, Athletics, Cricket, Tennis, Football and Netball. The names of students who represented the Upper South East have been added to the honour board in the gymnasium walkway.

A big thank you to the many parents who transported children to trials, practices and carnivals. Also thank you to

those who assisted with scoring, managing or timing at events. Finally, a great big WELL DONE to everyone that participated in any sport or event!

Information about SAPSASA opportunities for 2017 will be available early in term one.

AUSSIE SPORTSThis week, Year 3/4 and 5/6 students have participated in the Aussie Sports Carnival. The sports played this year were soccer and basketball. Mixed year level teams were chosen, captains were elected and team names chosen.

Teams played a round robin format on Tuesday and Thursday. Each game was umpired, scored and timed by the students.

The focus of each session was participation, fun and sportsmanship.

It was great to see students playing as a team, supporting each other and displaying school values.

A great week 9 event for everyone involved.
