Task1 Reading (2014 重庆,C)体裁:说明文 词数:283 Underline the topic sentence of each paragraph.

The idea of being able to walk on water has long interested humans greatly. Sadly, biological facts prevent us ever accomplishing such a thing without artificial aid — we simply weigh too much, and all our mass (质量) pushes down through our relatively small feet, resulting in a lot of pressure that makes us sink.

However, several types of (几种) animals can walk on water. One of the most interest-ing is the common basilisk Basilicus basilicus,a lizard (蜥蜴)native to (原产于)Central and South America. It can run across water for a distance of several meters, avoiding getting wet by rapidly hitting the water’s surface with its feet. The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second (每秒)to keep moving forward. For humans to do this, we’d need huge feet that we could bring up to our ears in order to create adequate “ hitting.”.

But fortunately there is an alternative : cornflour. By adding enough of this common(普通的) thickening agent (增稠剂) to water (and it does take a lot),you can create a “non-Newtonian” liquid (非牛顿流体:粘性大的流体)that doesn’t behave like normal water. Now, if the surface of the water is hit hard (猛击)enough, particles(粒子) in the water group to-gether for a moment to make the surface hard. Move quickly enough and put enough force into each step, and you really can walk across the surface of an adequately thick liquid(粘稠液体,[流] 浆) of cornflour.

Fun though all this may sound, it’s still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in practice. If you must do it, then keep the water wings handy in case you start to sink_and take a shower afterward!

Step3: Fast reading--Passage1a)Ss go through passage1 and identify the persons(name) involved. Ian Wilmut, Faye Wilson, Severino Antinorib)Ss conclude the attitude (for or against) of each person and explain how the attitude is ex-

pressed. Ian Wilmut: against human cloning..., is shocked that some scientists are now considering cloning human beings. (Words with a negative meaning)Although he researches cloning, his intention has never been to create human beings. (conjunction+negative adverb)Faye Wilson: for human cloningEven though human cloning is causing a lot of anxiety, it is good news for .... (Adverb)Severino Antinori: for human cloning... he wants to be the first to clone a human being.(words with a positive meaning)c) According to the title of this passage: The Perfect Copy, what is the author’s attitude toward

the idea of human cloning?Perfect: word with a positive meaning

Step4: Task- based Reading: Reasons why people are for or against human cloning

The Perfect CopyAgainst human cloning For human cloning

①The intention of destroying cloned hu-man embryos shows disrespect for human life.

① Human cloning helps infertile (不孕的)women, like Faye Wilson, to have a child of their own.

② If mankind toys with nature in this way, beasts produced by scientists are about to

replace human beings one day; human life would just become a crop to

be harvested or a product for sale.

② Human cloning is a breakthrough in the scientific field, although many people are concerned about the diseases it may lead to.

③ The Earth’s natural wealth is running out. Human cloning may lead to a boost in Earth’s population.

③ Human cloning can be regarded as a good attempt to challenge moral ideas, which scientists have been doing for centuries.

④ Fewer orphans would be adopted by mothers since human cloning enables women to have a cloned baby of their own.

④ Human cloning is an exciting way to bring our beloved ones back to life so that we can be with them again.

9. Homework ——summary 例:2014年江苏英语高考卷请阅读下面短文, 并按照要求用英语写一篇 150 词左右的文章。When we read newspapers, we often come across such English words as “AIDS” and “PK.” When we watch TV, we frequently hear words like “NBA” or “PM2.5.” When we speak, we automatically use words like “OUT” or “Bye-bye.” English words and expressions like these are getting popular. They have already become part of our daily language. And 239 English words have been included in the latest Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese. The inclusion has started a heated discussion. A group of scholars signed a letter of complaint over the inclusion of these English words, which, they think, goes against Chinese language poli-cies. They not only worry that Chinese is borrowing an increasing number of English words but are also concerned that the inclusion may hurt the dignity of the Chinese language. However, others are in favor of the inclusion because it is hard to say whether it will threaten the Chinese language. They believe the selection is mostly a result of their function and use in daily life.1. 用约 30 个单词写出上文概要;(Situation)Today, more and more English words find their way into the Chinese language. Even the Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese includes 239 English words. (introduction of two sides)Some people support it while others do not.

(Situation)With English words getting popular in both media and daily life, a Chinese dictionary has included 239 of them, (introduction of two sides)leaving the public divided into two oppos-ing groups: “For” and “Against.”

Exercise: summarize paragraph 1 on page 42 in 30 words. Scientists have announced that they have cloned the first human embryo. This has caused much debate round the world. On the one hand, some scientists point out that if you clone an embryo, you can produce valuable human tissues -- such as bone or lung tissue -- that could be used to save human lives. On the other hand, many people, including some scientists, disagree and are afraid that if mankind toys with nature in this way, we may be on our way to producing a real-life Frankenstein’s monster.
