How the title sequence came together.

• Gareth Smith and his wife Jenny Lee created the title sequence together.

• They went over to Vancouver to get what they needed for the title sequence whilst the film was being shot.

• They wondered around the city and it’s neighbourhoods to photograph elements and locations that would work for the title sequence.

• When they started to shoot the title sequence with Juno (Ellen Page) they used a green screen and a treadmill to get the walking shots.

Why it’s good to develop the idea for the title sequence before the film is shot. • An advantage of this is that Gareth and Jenny were able to request a

shot from a live action production team that would “elegantly” get them into the animated world.

• And this turned out to be….

• Juno would walk behind a tall vertical object and on one side it would be live action and then on the other side it would be animated.

• Jason Reitman (the director) shot a dolly shot (the camera follows the movement) of Juno walking through a neighbourhood, then behind a large tree.

• The next slide shows what the final shot looks like….

Titles

• The final style of the titles were “graphic, simple and contemporary”.

• Most of the illustrations were based on the location photographs Gareth and Jenny captured whilst in Vancouver.

• The type of text font used for the titles was inspiration from when they used to doodle in their books from when they were at school.

• Jenny also created the end credits for the film and she called that type of font “Kaylee” after her niece.
