HEAD’S LETTER OF WELCOME

Dear Parents Welcome to Nottingham Girls’ High School - I’m delighted that your daughter will be joining us and I am confident that you have made the best decision in choosing us to shape her future; our provision is second to none. Everything you would want for your daughter to flourish, succeed and be happy, we want for her too, and I feel that the school’s excellent teaching and learning provision and outstanding pastoral support will ensure that she achieves her goals, and yours. From the onset of school right through to the Sixth Form and beyond, your daughter will receive outstanding support - from her teachers; from all of our superb support staff; from current AND former pupils, and of course from the GDST itself. There will always be advice on hand and a friendly face to turn to - we recognise the importance of this. Your own involvement too, will make a huge difference in encouraging her to play a full part in school life, and I hope to include parents in as many and varied ways as possible. Together, we can make your daughter’s journey through school the very best that it can be - confident, successful, healthy and happy.

Yours sincerely

Miss Julie KellerHead

KEEPING IN TOUCH

CONTACTING THE SCHOOL The Junior School reception is open Monday to Friday from 8.00am - 4.00pm term time only. During the holidays the Senior School reception is open from 9.00am - 4.00pm.

By telephone: Telephone calls should be directed through Junior School reception on 0115 935 4450. Outside office hours, messages can be left on the answering service.

By email: General enquiries should be addressed to [email protected]

The Head and Deputy Head are always happy to see parents. Please telephone Mrs Sail, Junior School Administration Manager, on 0115 935 4450, to make an appointment.

Please note that for security purposes, all parents visiting any part of the school should sign in at reception and be issued with a visitors badge.

SCHOOLCOMMSWe use an ICT package called Schoolcomms to communicate with you quickly and securely by email, and to send short text messages to your mobile phone. This efficient communication method helps us reduce our environmental impact and enables you to receive information more reliably and promptly. Your contact details are not shared with anyone. We will use the email address and mobile numbers held in our database. It is essential that we hold the most up to date information, especially when your daughter is out of school on trips and residential visits or is taken ill in school. *Please remember to notify us (0115 935 4450 or [email protected]) of any changes.

FIREFLYFirefly is a communications system which will give you access to a wide range of information about your daughter’s school life through a secure individual login which you will receive from the school. You will be able to view her attendance record, homework and awards, as well as the latest school news, the school calendar and much more - all in one place. School reports and letters will also be communicated via Firefly.

9

MOBILE PHONESMobile phones may be brought to school by pupils travelling by bus in order to communicate any delays to parents. These should be switched off and kept securely in your daughter’s bag during the school day.

PARENTS’ EVENINGSYou will be invited to two parents’ evenings each year; one in the Autumn and one in the Spring term. The dates are published well in advance on the school calendar.

REPORTS You will receive a full written report in the Summer Term. This will be published on Firefly, accessible through the website. PARENTPAYTuition fees are paid to the Girls’ Day School Trust by direct debit. However, any additional charges not included in the fees, such as optional trips, are collected by the School via an online payment system called ParentPay.

ParentPay is a way of making secure payments online using your credit or debit card. A market leader for cashless payments, ParentPay operates in over 2,000 schools. It offers you the freedom to make payments whenever and wherever you like - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - safe in the knowledge that the technology used is of the highest security available.

You have a secure online account, activated using a unique username and password. No card details are stored in any part of the system. Making a payment is straightforward and ParentPay holds a payment history for you to view at a later date. All new parents are issued with an activation letter with all the details required to set up an account.

BE EXTRAORDINARY BULLETINThe Junior School publishes a weekly bulletin, ‘BEB’, every Friday during term time which is emailed to all parents. This serves as a reminder of scheduled events in the calendar and celebrates pupil success and achievements.

BAD WEATHERSchool will always remain open. In the event of severe weather information will be sent out via Schoolcomms or posted on the school website: www.nottinghamgirlshigh.gdst.net

10

ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITYGood attendance and punctuality is vital in achieving potential and we monitor this very closely.

START OF DAY ROUTINETo ensure your daughter’s safety, we have clear routines at the start and end of the School day. The day starts at 8.30am and girls should not arrive any earlier than 8.00am as they will be unsupervised. However, the dining hall is open for breakfast from 7.50am serving a choice of full English and Continental breakfast, which is very popular with families.

Please make sure that when you are dropping off your daughter you enter the Junior playground, via the gate entrance from Baker Street. For Reception parents please continue into the Reception garden and into the classrooms. The gate closes at 8.30am.

If you need to speak to a member of staff please come to the main Junior School entrance, off Balmoral Road, and see Mrs Lesley Sail, the Junior School Administration Manager. Appointments with teachers can be made via Mrs Sail.

Please note: For security reasons you should not be in any part of the school, without a visitors badge.

Reception Parents may drop off their daughters in the Reception classes where a member of staff will be there to provide support and help her with the morning activities.

LATE ARRIVALSAny girl who arrives after 8.30am, should be brought to the main entrance on Balmoral Road, as the playground gate will be locked at 8.30am.

If you are not collecting her yourself please make a brief note of the arrangements to be given to her class teacher. If she is going on the bus please write down the bus number, destination and where she will get off. If your daughter’s arrangements for leaving school are different from usual please mention this to her teacher in the morning or send a note or email into school.

LATE COLLECTIONAny girls who are not collected on time will stay with the teacher on duty until 4.00pm. At 4.00pm girls will be taken to the Junior Reception and at 4.10pm will be signed into After School Club and parents charged £7.00. If collected by 4.30pm, the charge will be reduced to £2.00.

If exceptional circumstances mean that you are running late, please telephone the Junior Reception and let us know.

13

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOLYou are probably aware that the School is legally required to maintain accurate records of pupil attendance on a day to day basis. Good attendance is crucial to success at school as the following statistics show: 90% attendance = 1/2 day missed a week 90% all year = 4 weeks missed 90% over 5 years = 1/2 school year missed

If your daughter’s attendance drops below 95% we will contact you. See official government link: https://www.gov.uk/school-attendance-absence/overview.

If your daughter is unwell please telephone the school office (0115 935 4450) before 9.00am on each day of her absence to let us know the cause, and the likely date of her return, or email [email protected]. In all cases of unexplained absence, Mrs Sail, the Junior School Administration Manager, will send a text and/or phone shortly after 9.00am to check on your daughter’s safety.

If you wish to withdraw your daughter from school for reasons other than illness, permission must be requested, in writing, from the Head of the Junior School, well in advance. Please try to make routine appointments with dentists etc, during the holidays or out of school hours.

14

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

“EMOTIONAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING = ACHIEVEMENT”We appreciate that nothing matters more to families than the health, welfare and future success of their children.

The following objectives are very important to us, and we work hard with girls and their families to achieve and promote them:• keeping your daughter safe• being happy and successful• being healthy• making a positive contribution• preparation for the future

Pastoral care is an integral part of school life. We work in partnership with you and your daughter to achieve the best emotional health and well-being for her, and we pride ourselves on doing it well.

THE PASTORAL TEAM

Mrs Brenda Williams, School Nurse The role of the school nurse is to enable pupils to fulfil their educational potential by means of supporting their emotional and physical needs in the school environment. She works very closely with all members of the pastoral care team, ensuring the emotional and physical health of all pupils is promoted.

Brenda Williams, RGN/RSCN MSc Child Health, is a highly qualified paediatric nurse with over 25 years’ experience of working with children with complex medical needs. She spent 16 years working at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital at a senior managerial level, four years at Nottingham University Hospitals QMC where she was the manager of Children’s Outpatients, and has been the school nurse at NGHS since September 2009. She is also the Consultant Nurse for all 24 schools and 2 academies within the Girls’ Day School Trust and can be contacted, Monday to Friday, during school hours on 0115 941 [email protected]

Ms Cate Harvey, Head of Educational SupportMs Harvey is a specialist teacher and qualified assessor with expertise in supporting young people with Dyslexia, Autism, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Her role is to provide assistance to pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities and offer guidance to all pupils with learning and

15

organisational skills, revision and exam techniques. Our school welcomes children at all stages of their education with mild learning difficulties and disabilities. We actively encourage pupils and their parents to be a part of this process through drop-in sessions, mentoring and more formal meetings. We understand that pupils’ needs vary enormously, sometimes requiring intense 1:1 sessions or more generally needing a bit of moral support. Our aim is to be flexible and approachable enough to ensure, whatever pathway pupils take, they achieve their potential and enjoy every success in the future. [email protected]

MEDICAL RECORDSBefore your daughter joins NGHS we will ask you to complete a confidential health assessment form. Please ensure that you provide up to date medical information and details of any ongoing medical issues or concerns you may have. All information is held confidentially by the school nurse.

HEALTH ASSESSMENTSThe school nurse carries out a routine health check on girls joining Reception, based on the medical questionnaire. If your daughter is joining any other year group and you have any concerns, please discuss these with the School Nurse. If she has any medical concerns she will discuss these with you and refer you to the appropriate services. If your daughter has any complex medical needs please ensure you discuss these with the school nurse at the earliest opportunity and before your daughter starts school. The nurse will liaise with you in order to prepare an individual medical care plan for your daughter.

16

ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION AT SCHOOLMedicines should only be brought to school when essential. If your daughter requires antibiotics or other long term medications, these must be prescribed by her GP and you must complete an “Administration of medication while at school” form which can be obtained from the school office or nurse. All medicines must be in the original packaging stating the child’s name, date of birth and the recommended dose.

If your daughter has a complex medical condition which requires emergency medication such as an EpiPen, inhaler or insulin, this will be kept in a lockable cabinet, it must be prescribed for a named individual and the school nurse will require a second emergency supply which will be kept securely in the medical centre. Again, it must be in the original packaging, stating the name, date of birth and recommended dose.

If your daughter becomes unwell during the school day, she will be assessed by the school nurse and over-the-counter medication may be given if necessary, subject to parental consent as requested in the medical questionnaire. However, Calpol or similar medication will not be administered on parental request.

ILLNESSIf your daughter is unwell, we ask that you keep her at home. If she is suffering with vomiting and diarrhoea she should not return to school for at least 48 hours following the last episode. Further information is available at www.gov.uk/phe If your daughter becomes unwell during the school day and is not well enough to return to her class we will contact you to discuss arrangements for your daughter to be collected.

HEAD LICEUnfortunately, head lice do visit us occasionally and infection spreads quickly within school. We therefore ask all parents to be vigilant, checking your daughter’s hair weekly. If you see lice in your daughter’s hair please notify the school nurse and do not send her to school - even for one day - until it has been treated.

FASTING We acknowledge and respect the wishes of our pupils who wish to fast for religious reasons. However, this is something that is not encouraged in the Junior School due to their young age. Should you wish to discuss this further with the School Nurse please feel free to contact her on 0115 935 4411 or by email: [email protected]

17

HOMEWORKThe nature of homework will change as children get older.

For girls in EYFS/Key Stage 1, developing a partnership with parents and carers, and involving them actively in children’s learning is a key objective.Short activities of different kinds - reading together, learning spellings and number facts - provide a very important opportunity for young children to talk about what they are learning to an interested adult, and to practise key skills in a supportive environment.

As your daughter get older, homework provides an opportunity for her to develop the skills of independent learning, which she will need to continue lifelong learning and this should increasingly become its main purpose. It is important that your daughter gradually gets into the habit of regularly devoting periods of time, which may not be long, to study on her own. By the time she reaches Year 6 her homework programme will cover a wider range of tasks and curriculum content, with a regular weekly schedule. This approach will benefit her learning and also ensure that, in relation to homework as much as to other aspects, her transition to Year 7 is as smooth as possible.

HOME READING The importance of reading at home cannot be over-emphasised and we hope that your daughter will read for pleasure in her own time as well as completing tasks set by the school from her reading ‘menu’.

Your daughter will be provided with a suitable school reading book, which can be taken home to read with a parent or other adult person. Girls are also encouraged to read books from home and make trips to the library.

SPELLINGSSpellings will be given to each child to learn using the Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check method. Some spellings may be differentiated by pupil ability; others may be key words from topics.

Spellings need to be reinforced through learning the words, using them in context (verbally and in writing) and will be tested each week. Your daughter will be encouraged to undertake spelling activities such as putting the spellings into sentences, paragraphs and topic work. You can support her through testing her on the words, providing short tasks and using the words in conversation.

18

NUMERACYHomework will be provided for pupils to consolidate or revise particular mathematical skills. Teachers will provide ideas and activities to practise key skills and to introduce pupils and parents to mathematical language. Pupils will be given login details of ‘Mathletics’ and encouraged to work through the levels at their own pace. Rote learning is essential in consolidating learning. All pupils will be encouraged to learn their number bonds and timetables at home. Parents can support this by practising with their children on a regular basis. We also encourage parents to support home learning through practical activities such as baking and shopping.

TOPIC WORKOccasionally, class teachers will set topic homework tasks where pupils will be asked to research a person, place or subject. This will be specific and pupils will not be expected to spend too much time on it.

STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT HOME LEARNING:Occasionally, pupils may not be given formal homework activities by teachers, but that does not mean that home learning should not take place. Parents are encouraged to:

1. Verbalise thinking - Encourage their child to talk to about their learning at home. Asking them to explain something that they have learned. Asking them to explain something or articulate their thinking can help the brain organise its thoughts and clarify an issue in their mind.

2. Ask questions - Encourage their child to ask questions about the topics that day.

3. Use information - children need to use the new information they have learned. For example: If they have been learning about weighing in school they could undertake practical activities at home. The ability to use this new information means a movement from knowing to understanding.

4. Reflecting - Parents asking their children to think about what they have learned in lessons Reflection plays a central role in learning. It helps students develop a deeper understanding.

19

AFTER SCHOOL CLUBThe After School Club is available to all pupils in the Junior School and runs between 3.50pm and 5.45pm every day during term time. At the end of the school day the girls attending After School Club meet in the Library to sign in and then enjoy a snack and drink.

Reception to Year 2There is a varied programme of activities for your daughter to enjoy including games, arts and craft, outdoor play and a quiet story time. There is something on offer to suit every need.

Years 3 to 6For the older girls this is an ideal opportunity for them to finish homework, catch up with reading or practise their music, with help from Junior Staff, if needed. They can then enjoy some outdoor play and time to wind down after a busy day - freeing up valuable home time.

The cost, which includes a drink and snack, is as follows:Concessionary rate: £6.00 a day (every night) when paid half termly in advance within the first two weeks of term Standard rate: £7.00 or £2.00 if collected by 4.30pmBefore or after a school club: £2.00Additional costs: £1.30 when a sandwich is ordered in advance. Home sandwiches or snacks may be provided for your daughter to eat during after school club and these must be handed in to Mrs Sail for refrigeration during the school day.A late collection fee of £10.00 will be charged for any child who is not collected by 5.45pm

Payment:Your daughter’s ParentPay account is charged monthly, with payment due by the 14th of the month following. See page 9 for further details on the ParentPay system. If a place at After School Club is booked but not required it must be cancelled by 12.00 noon or the full charge will be made. This also applies if your daughter is absent, so please remember to cancel the booking when you ring in about her absence.

The number to contact the After School Club Supervisor is 07500 969653 after 4.00pm or email [email protected] between 8.00am and 4.00pm.

20

ENRICHMENTThere are lots of different clubs for children to join if they want to. These take place during lunchtime and before and after school. Activities cover a wide range of interests and we hope that most children will choose at least one club.

Here are some examples of this year’s clubs:Art and craft Choir Cricket Debating Football Hockey ICT Knitting Maths in Motion Netball Orchestra Rounders Sewing Swing Band Ukulele Orchestra

CLUBS FOR WHICH A SMALL CHARGE IS MADE:

Ballet Chess Drama Fencing Gymnastics Judo Musical Theatre Steel Pans Tennis

MUSIC LESSONSThere is a wide range of musical activities open to all girls. In addition to class music lessons, visiting teachers offer tuition in a variety of musical instruments. If desired, girls have the opportunity to try out the instrument of their choice with a music teacher before parents commit to regular tuition.

In addition, we offer a ‘Da-Capo’ course as an option in Years 1 and 2. This involves girls learning with a peripatetic music teacher, a variety of instruments, in a group of three so that the fee is split accordingly.

Instruments will include:• Piano and Percussion • Recorders and Ocarina• Violin• Brass• Woodwind• Cello

Parents are warmly invited to attend concerts and musical events which are well publicised in advance in the calendar and the School’s newsletter.

21

INDIVIDUAL MUSIC TUITIONIndividual tuition in all orchestral instruments, voice, piano, recorder and guitar is available at school from a team of specialist teachers. Should your daughter already be learning an instrument there is no reason for her to change teacher unless you feel it might be more convenient for her to have lessons at school during the school day. If so, please complete the music tuition application form.

If your daughter is not currently receiving instrumental tuition she will be given the opportunity to hear, see and talk about different instruments and her potential will be assessed. We can then discuss the possibility of her starting lessons and consider which instrument might suit her best.

Regular taster sessions are held throughout the year when there will be opportunities for girls and their parents to meet peripatetic teachers and try new instruments.

ATTENDANCE AT INDIVIDUAL MUSIC LESSONSTeachers contract to provide 30 half-hour lessons per year. Calculations of lessons received are not made until July. In the nature of school communities, girls may have to miss scheduled lessons for trips or school functions. Teachers will try to accommodate these difficulties, but are under no obligation to make up lessons missed through a girl’s illness or error, although they may choose to do so as an act of goodwill. Girls often receive more than thirty lessons and it is normal to bill pro rata for these lessons.

SPEECH AND DRAMA LESSONSTuition in speech and drama is offered as an extra-curricular activity for pupils, by a visiting teacher, from Year 4 and above. Girls are taught in groups of eight and can continue until Year 6 at which point they can choose whether to continue their studies at senior level. These classes provide an opportunity for children to learn basic skills in verbal communication and presentation together with clear and accurate speech, and to expand their knowledge of the written and spoken word. They will be introduced to verse and prose and learn self-presentation, posture, body-centring, quietness and the value of stillness. This will be delivered in an informal environment, designed to encourage children to learn, develop and improve their verbal skills and vocal vitality whilst exploring their imagination and improving their self-esteem.

As children progress they will be given the opportunity to participate in English Speaking Board (ESB) junior assessments which take place annually in May. Children are assessed in an informal environment, by an external ESB assessor, and their teacher and other members of their peer group will be present. These assessments are designed to support and encourage young candidates to feel comfortable in an

22

examination environment, whilst providing a listening audience. They are particularly valuable in encouraging self-esteem.

Girls can begin classes at any stage during a school year, although places are subject to availability. If a place is not immediately available, your daughter’s name will be placed on a waiting list.

ACCOUNTS FOR MUSIC AND SPEECH AND DRAMAThese are payable termly in advance and parents are billed by the individual teachers concerned and not by the school. One term’s notice is given of any increase in fees.

Terms and conditions for notice are included in the agreement between parents and visiting music teachers. One full term’s notice in writing is required should a girl wish to stop her lessons.

23

UNIFORMAll compulsory school uniform is available and should be purchased from our online supplier, Stevensons, unless otherwise specified: www.stevensons.co.ukPlease ensure that all items of uniform are clearly named with sew-in name tapes (not iron-on, please).

CATERING

DINING HALLThe dining hall opens at 7.50am, with a full English and continental breakfast service for all the family. Many parents find it convenient to avoid the rush hour and enjoy breakfast with their daughters at school. This also applies at the end of the day when you can pop in for a drink and cake before collecting your daughter. The dining hall is open to families throughout the day, except for the busy periods (11.00am - 11.30am and 12 noon - 2.30pm) which should be avoided.

All Junior girls have a school lunch. There is always an extensive choice and a vegetarian option is offered daily as well as a main ‘meat’ meal, jacket potatoes, salads or sandwiches. Children can choose a hot or cold pudding, fruit or yoghurt. Daily menus are on Firefly, or copies may be requested from Mrs Sail, should parents like to help their daughter with meal choices.

We operate a ‘no nut’ policy, avoid the use of artificial colours and preservatives wherever possible, and are happy to accommodate special diets for medical or religious reasons. Our Catering Manager, Steve Evans, is happy to discuss any special dietary requirements (gluten free, milk free etc). Please feel free to contact him on 0115 941 7663 or email: [email protected]

SNACKS FOR BREAKWe promote ‘healthy eating’ within the Junior School so between Monday and Thursday only one healthy snack consisting of fruit and/or vegetables and a drink may be brought into school. On Friday a sensible ‘treat’ item may be provided, but no fizzy drinks or packets of sweets please.

Milk can be ordered at an additional cost for mid morning snack time.

It is also important that girls have a sports bottle of water, clearly labelled with their name, in school every day. There is a fresh water dispenser and water fountain in school.

28

TRAVEL TO AND FROM SCHOOL

TRAVEL BY CARIf you choose to bring your daughter to school by car, please be aware that roads around the school are frequently congested.

TRAFFIC CONTROLS The City Council have imposed a 20mph speed limit on most roads around the school.

PARKING AROUND THE SCHOOLPlease remember to park courteously in our neighbourhood area, with due respect for local residents, and do not park across gateways, on yellow or zigzag lines, on white lines or on pavements. This can impair the vision of those entering or leaving the School and could cause a serious accident. Please also be aware that traffic wardens patrol frequently in the area.

Parking on site is very limited and members of staff have allocated spaces. Please do not use our car park area for dropping off or collecting your daughter, or for turning.

Limited visitor parking is available outside the reception entrance for parents visiting the school on official business, for example an appointment with a member of staff.

SCHOOL BUSESA network of buses transports pupils to and from Nottingham High School, Nottingham Girls’ High School and Hollygirt. All buses load and unload on Baker Street, which is part of the school grounds and not a public highway. If your daughter will be travelling on a school bus, please make it clear to her that under no circumstances should she attempt to alight from or to board a bus before it has parked on Baker Street. The buses leave at 4.10pm.

The administration of the school bus service is undertaken by Nottingham High School. Please contact Christine Winter at Nottingham High School on 0115 845 2217.
