Welcome It gives us great pleasure to welcome you to Kilgraston Junior School. Anne Fidelo, Head of Junior School, joined Kilgraston in 2017 after teaching in a variety of schools in Scotland and England and being Head of an international, independent Junior School overseas. She is part of a team of committed, experienced, caring Junior Years teachers, who work hard to make your daughter’s years with us challenging, interesting, exciting and safe, both emotionally and physically. We aim to ensure strong communication between home and school with information about the activities of the Junior School. We are delighted that you have chosen Kilgraston and look forward to a happy and successful association with you and your family in the years ahead. At Kilgraston we enjoy the positive benefits from the partnership between school, home and the wider school community. We aim to foster a sense of achievement, promote creativity and enterprise, to equip our pupils with skills and confidence for the future to achieve their full potential. We have an Open Day in our Autumn and Spring terms each year and new pupils can spend a taster day in class, where they can get to know the other pupils and teachers. We will carry out some informal assessments on this day. The girls may then spend a whole day with their new class on our Induction Day in June, which can be organised with [email protected]. New pupils can then come with parents on the day before the first teaching day of our school session to have a look around, to get to know other new pupils and their parents and ask our teaching staff lots of questions. On the first day of term our Junior School staff will welcome our new pupils and introduce them at School Assembly. They will also be looked after by a class ‘buddy’ for the first few days until they find their feet. They will also have a BFG from the Senior School as a special friend and mentor. Communication At Kilgraston we value the partnership between home and school – strong communication makes for a happy and productive learning environment. The majority of communication is sent by email, therefore it is important that you provide us with an email address that you check regularly and also inform us of any changes to your email address. It is essential that we are able to contact parents, guardians or a nominated emergency contact in case of illness or injury. Parents are asked to provide emergency contact numbers and to inform the school immediately if there are any changes to these during the school year. Parents are encouraged to inform us if there are any changes to family circumstances which could affect your daughter’s progress. Your daughter’s class teacher is the first point of contact in all aspects of school life and contact by email is simplest initially, either to answer a query or to arrange to meet. Please be aware that all class teachers have full teaching responsibilities, consequently an immediate response is not always feasible. If your communication is urgent, please contact the Junior Years reception desk, through our Secretary, Ms Trish Stack, Tel: 01738 815538 who can also be contacted on [email protected] to allow the matter will be dealt with immediately by either your daughter’s class teacher or a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Kilgraston Website Our website is updated regularly and used to communicate last minute cancellations, diary changes and updates on sporting fixtures. It also provides a link to other useful websites. Access to our parent site is controlled by a username and password which our ICT Manager, Mr Gavin Muirhead, [email protected], will email directly to parents during the summer holidays in preparation for the new school year. Kilgraston provides school reports electronically available online via its parent portal which can be accessed at www.schoolbaseonline.biz/?dname=kilgraston. In the Junior School electronic reports are sent at the end of Autumn Term in December and then again at the end of Summer term in June. Parents new to Kilgraston will be sent a username and password during the summer holidays. If existing parents have forgotten their user name or password or log in details, please email [email protected] Forward Each Friday a news sheet, Forward, is sent out to all parents from the Headmistress. It contains news and updates on all aspects of school life. Often it also contains important information. If you do not receive it, please contact [email protected] This is also the address for enquiries and contributions to Forward. The Headmistress also sends out a termly letter to all parents via the Parent Portal. Details of how to access this is given in the Report section of the handbook. Concerns We believe that Kilgraston is a school where anxieties, problems or issues can be freely aired and resolved. Any problem or dissatisfaction will be treated seriously and addressed promptly, courteously and with due sensitivity to the individuals concerned. Kilgraston’s complaints policy and procedures document is on the school website.

Procedures and Routines Daily Routine The school day begins with Registration at 8.45 a.m. and Assembly at 8.55 a.m. Teaching begins at 9.05 a.m. and with six periods, runs through to 4.00 p.m. for Reception to Upper 2 and 4.10 p.m. for Lower 3 and Upper 3. All have a common lunch break and there is a morning interval. After school activities begin at 4.30 p.m and most end at 5.30 p.m. Study is from 4.30-5.30 p.m. There is an extra evening study in the boarding house for younger Boarders after supper. Junior School Morning Club takes place in the Junior School Art Room accessed from the Atrium area. Your child can be dropped off to this club between 8.00 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. Morning Club is supervised by Trish, our school secretary. Pupils leave their school bags, sports bags and equipment in the Atrium at allocated pillars for their respective year groups. At 8.30 they move their bags etc. into their cloakrooms and then return to the Atrium area to be collected by their class teacher at the registration bell. Parents are requested to collect their daughters from the Atrium rather than their classrooms please. All food and drink during the day is supplied by the school, even when out of school on trips. Between 4.00-4.30 p.m. pupils, not going home straight after school should report to the Junior School Art Room where they are registered for attending either Study Club from 4.30-5.30 p.m. or for going onto an after-school activity. This is supervised by a rota of Junior School teachers, providing a snack and quiet time before study Club or an activity. From 4.30-5.30 p.m. some pupils attend the Junior School Study Club and operates Monday – Friday every week. Children may join and leave the Study Club at any time between 4.30 and 5.30 p.m. to suit parents. Personal reading/puzzles/thinking games are encouraged once homework has been completed. If a child attends a Study Club they may have completed their homework by the time they are collected. Pupils who have not been collected when Study Club and activities have finished in the Junior School at 5.30 p.m. will go to the Main Reception until 6.00 p.m. If they are still with us after that, they will join the Boarders. Parents may then collect children via Main Reception. We are aware that hold-ups can occur on the way to school and you should rest assured that your child will be looked after until collected. Parents should note that there will be NO after school activities

During the year there are events such as concerts, sports matches, performances, sales and fun days held in the school. Parents, family and friends are encouraged to join us for these to support the pupils. Details of most events are in the school calendar (blue booklet) and on the website. ‘What’s On’ notices are posted on the Junior School and Boarding House notice boards, and can be seen on the website. We have a digital sign in the atrium foyer where daily information, news, images; information clips will be available in addition to a Parent Noticeboard KPA (Kilgraston Parents Association) noticeboard.

Lesson Times - The school day consists of six lessons. Registration 8.45 a.m. Assembly 8.55 a.m. - 9.05 a.m. Period 1 9.05 a.m. - 10.00 a.m. Period 2 10.00 a.m. – 10.50 a.m. Morning Interval 10.55 a.m. - 11.15 a.m. Period 3 11.15 a.m. -12.10 p.m. Period 4 12.10 p.m. – 12.55/1.00/1.05 p.m. Lunch 1.05 p.m. - 2.10 p.m. Period 5 2.10 p.m. - 3.10 p.m. Period 6 3.10 p.m. – 4.00 / 4.10 p.m. NB: Day girls should be in school by 8.40 a.m. Attendance Absence – Unforeseen. If your daughter is unwell and unable to come to school, please phone the Junior Years or the main reception office (01738 812257) on her first day of absence. If your daughter is a boarder and will not be returning after a weekend, please inform the relevant Residential Mistress on the Sunday evening. On her return to school, she should hand in an absence note to her Tutor. If your daughter is absent for more than a few days, but is well enough to complete work, it might be appropriate for work to be sent home. If you would like work to be set for your daughter, please contact her class teacher who will then liaise with the subject staff. Work will usually be left in the Junior Years office for collection. Absence - Foreseen Occasionally it may be necessary for pupils to miss school for reasons other than illness such as a medical appointment that cannot be timed out of school hours. If this is the case, please notify your daughter’s class teacher in advance and in writing. We ask that pupils do not miss school unless it is unavoidable. For absences longer than one day, permission is required from the Headmistress and should be made in writing by the parent or guardian. It is the pupils’ own responsibility to catch up on work missed other than through illness. Frequent or prolonged absences are likely to be detrimental to progress. Any pupil who must miss a class for a music lesson, sports fixture etc. should tell the member of staff concerned in advance. Pupils arriving late for school MUST sign in at the Junior Years office. In accordance with government guidelines, continual absence may lead to the following; if a pupil has continued unauthorised absence and attendance drops below 90% letter will inform you. If there is no improvement within two weeks a further letter will be sent. If there is no improvement within a week after this, you will be invited to attend a meeting with senior school staff to establish the reasons for the continuing low attendance and how to address these.

Activities, events, and off-site visits. Kilgraston offers a huge range of extra-curricular activities, some creative, some sporting, some musical. Most activities run between 4.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. The after-school activity timetable is displayed in the Sports Hall, the Atrium and the Boarding area during the first week of the term and is in the school calendar and on the Kilgraston web-site. A booklet is published at the beginning of each academic year offering a range of activities and clubs that pupils can join either at lunchtime or after school. Tutors will be able to advise pupils how to enrol for these activities and which might best suit their interests. The availability of any activity depends on staffing and on the numbers applying. In some of the activities numbers are limited and consequently pupils need to be aware that they may not get into their first choice of activity. There may also be a small charge attached to some of the activities. These

are clearly indicated on the form. Please note that extras require a term’s notice of withdrawal. As a matter of courtesy to our visiting staff, we expect pupils to attend chosen after- school activities for the entire term. A school calendar is also published each term which details, events, sporting activities and times of a variety of music and sporting practices. Additional visits or activities may also be planned, and parents will be notified of these either through the website or directly. Junior School classes go out of school on a visit at least once a term to support topic work in class. Boarders also have a full weekend activity programme and day pupils are welcome to participate. We try to give as much notice as possible if an activity has to be cancelled. Parents and pupils Are asked to check the notice board, our website, and our digital screen in the Junior School entrance for such information and if possible, we shall send a text or email. If necessary, we can keep day pupils with the boarders until they are collected - pupils will not be left unsupervised. Day pupils should be collected vi a main Reception after 5.30 p.m. School Closure There are occasions when bad weather makes it difficult or dangerous to get children to or from school. Under these circumstances please ring Reception to notify us that your child will not be in school. Local day pupils who are able to get to school will join the boarders in classes as usual. Should the weather take a turn for the worse during the day we will make every effort to contact parents. Should the worst happen, we shall provide emergency accommodation so that parents need not put themselves at risk to collect their children. The school owns four minibuses which are serviced regularly, fully equipped with seat belts and always carry mobile phones. Kilgraston has made provision for bus runs in some areas; please contact the Bursar if you require information on these.

The Curriculum at Kilgraston Kilgraston is a high achieving school providing excellent academic teaching and facilities, culminating in high achievement and standards. We are keen to ensure that girls receive a broad and balanced education, and that they undertake a wide range of educational experiences aimed at enriching and extending their abilities and understanding. The use of iPads has been introduced to enhance learning and support the skills required within the principles of the Curriculum for Excellence:

Every child in the Junior School is entitled to feel safe, nurtured, healthy, responsible, respected, included, active and achieving. We aim to ensure that every pupil will become a successful learner, an effective contributor, a responsible citizen and a confident individual.

The curriculum in the Junior School is designed to allow every child to achieve steady progress. There is positive reinforcement of all achievements and sound support for those finding difficulty, whether temporary or of a more permanent nature. All pupils are screened every year to help with early identification of any additional support needs. Early intervention to support a child’s learning is crucial to avoid loss of confidence and self-esteem. If a problem is identified, parents are informed and advised of suggested actions which may be taken to improve their child’s learning experiences. The core upon which we build our curriculum, and ensure that it is correctly balanced, is A Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland. We enhance the basic content and skills base for every subject in this curriculum, stretching each child gently and inspiring them with a joy of learning. Every child is encouraged to undertake personal research and teachers guide them in their studies whilst teaching them independent learning skills. The principles of the curriculum are ‘challenge and enjoyment, breadth, progression, depth, coherence, relevance, personalisation and choice’. Each step is carefully built on prior learning experiences. We try to involve pupils actively through self-evaluation and making choices, providing them with some ownership of their learning. English and Literacy, Mathematics and Numeracy, Science, Modern Languages, Social Studies, RS, Music, Drama, Art & DT, PE, IT, are all taught from Reception.

Home Economics, Latin and Classical Studies are introduced in Upper 3. As pupils progress through the school, they are taught increasingly by specialist subject teachers from Kilgraston’s Senior School. By the time they reach Upper 3, they are receiving most of their teaching by subject specialists. We give classes the opportunity to be involved with an enterprise activity ranging from fund raising for charity to recycling projects. Pupils are taught to plan effectively, work as a team, put ideas into action, evaluate and review. Some of the enterprise activities include organising cake and candy sales for a charity, organising a whole school event for charity, organising a Harvest Festival service for CATH and organising a shoe box appeal. Pupils are involved with Health and Wellbeing through their lessons and activities as well as specific events organised for different age groups. We aim to support pupils in their preparations for exams through revision and encouragement as well as study skills and practice. Assessments, exams and tests are a regular part of our curriculum- these inform our planning and highlight successes and areas for improvement for each pupil. They also prepare pupils for the rigours of the Senior School curriculum. Each May, Upper 3 sit formal examinations. Whilst following the Curriculum for Excellence guidelines of the Curriculum, we also prepare pupils for external examinations further on in their educational journey. Some pupils may wish to sit Common Entrance examinations for entry into other independent senior schools, others may wish to try for scholarships either at Kilgraston or elsewhere, thus we ensure that pupils are well prepared for these opportunities. Parents who wish their children to take these additional exams should discuss this with the Head of the Junior School as soon as possible so that pupils may be properly prepared. At the end of the school year we celebrate each child’s academic and sporting achievements in our Prize Giving Ceremony. Pupils receive certificates in subjects where they have made notable progress. Pupils who have excelled across a wide range of academic subjects also receive a Class Prize. Our aim is that every child moving on from the Junior School should have a joy of learning, the skills to allow independent learning and the confidence to meet the learning challenges of a senior school environment successfully along with healthy study skills. Within the Junior School, staff will adjust the curriculum to enable every pupil to perform to the best of her ability. We aim to educate each pupil in a way that suits their learning styles and maintains their interest in and progress in each subject area and our expectations of achievement vary for each pupil within each subject. We aim to provide every child with excellent learning experiences and we have an ethos of achievement. Support is available as an extension or as reinforcement of learning. Achievement, whether within or outwith the class room is celebrated and acknowledged. We encourage our pupils to be open to learning and willing to accept new challenges, and provide a focussed but collaborative atmosphere within our classrooms to enable all pupils to question and reflect as well as learn. We give our pupils an enjoyable but challenging curriculum, which has breadth, depth, progression and coherence. There are many opportunities for enrichment; cross curricular links, educational visits both day and residential, cultural visits and field courses, in the UK and abroad.

English Language and Literacy Emphasis is on the development of reading skills and improving writing skills. The early skills related to phonics and recognition of letters, sounds and word formation begin in the early years with active learning techniques. As pupils move through the Junior School, we build on this to formalise the teaching of reading aloud, reading for understanding and reading for information. Using this development of reading skills, we introduce writing and all the related learning of spelling, grammar, punctuation and handwriting. Children will be able to use their reading skills effectively and understand and write well-constructed pieces in a variety of styles and genres. Mathematics and Numeracy Mathematical concepts are introduced through practical work in the early classes and continue to be developed as pupils progress through the Junior School. Understanding of mathematical language and concepts are the main focus in the younger classes to ensure a solid base on which to build knowledge and skills. Our girls use concrete materials, practical activities and games to promote full understanding, as well as rote learning for number bonds and multiplication tables. The speed of reinforcement and extension varies to suit the learning of the individual, creating a confidence in using numbers and mathematical skills. We aim for pupils to be adept with numbers and have a positive attitude to number, which promotes successful learning and reduces the fear of making mistakes. Science Pupils in the younger classes begin to learn about science through their study of nature. Scientific concepts are developed through the topic studies, until Upper Second. Thereafter, science becomes more specialised. Kilgraston’s Science Centre allows Junior School pupils the opportunity to extend their scientific discovery learning. Social Studies The study of geography is focused on the local environment and simple mapping skills in the first classes, but this rapidly develops to the study of peoples, nations, continents and environmental issues such as sustainability. From a study of family and the immediate past through family, homes, clothes and toys, knowledge and understanding of the past moves to ancient times in Britain and the wider world. More detailed study and project work gives depth on topics such as Vikings, Egyptians, Scotland, and the World War Two Home Front. Study of the past is increasingly source based and the ability to evaluate and understand different sources forms a large part of our History curriculum. Languages We have introduced spoken French from Reception class that introduces pupils to the elementary vocabulary and we sing songs, play games and study the country as well as learning to speak the language. French is taught by specialist teachers from Lower 3 and Latin and Classical Studies are also taught from Upper 3. Pupils are expected to complete written work as neatly, carefully and thoughtfully as possible. Parents are asked to ensure that the same standards are applied to study done at home.

Technology in the Junior School All classes have access to our IT room each week. We have introduced iPads to Lower 3 and Upper 3 classes. They are provided with school iPads, Lower 3s using them exclusively in school, Upper 3 using them at school and occasionally at home. We aim to educate the girls in responsible, effective and considerate usage of technology in addition to enhancing their learning experience.

MUSIC There is the opportunity for all girls to take part in a variety of musical activities. Each class has a weekly music lesson where they learn to sing and play a selection of instruments. There are peripatetic teachers of a wide range of musical instruments. We have a Junior School Choir, a Junior School Orchestra and a Junior School recorder group. We have a variety of performances, concerts and recitals each year which parents are welcome to attend such as Perform in Perth and Perth Festival of the Arts. Many of our pupils compete in local festivals and they have the opportunity to take LAMDA examinations and ABRSM and Trinity Music examinations. SPORT Our pupils are provided with three timetabled sports lessons per week, including swimming. Included at Kilgraston are sports such as swimming, hockey, gymnastics, athletics, dance, tennis, netball and many more. Kilgraston boasts a Netball Academy, Hockey Academy, Tennis Academy, Equestrian Centre and Swimming Centre and has an impressive range of physical activities available. Our girls are not only learning the skills related to sport, but also being made aware of their physical wellbeing and the important role it plays in mental and emotional wellbeing. There are games matches against other Prep. schools and Junior schools every term. High standards of performance and behaviour are aimed for during matches. Pupils must learn to win and lose graciously. The social aspect is as important as the competitive one, and visiting teams are made to feel welcome. Parents and friends are encouraged to watch school matches both at home and away and are always invited to stay to tea. It is advisable to ring school on the day of the match to confirm that it is taking place or to check on the school website. Matches are played against: Ardvreck, Belhaven Hill, Cargilfield, Craigclowan, Fettes, Glenalmond, Lathallan, Loretto, St Leonard’s, Strathallan and many others. Pupils are regularly selected to play for their District (WOSPS – West of Scotland Prep Schools) in IAPS competitions against other Districts. Several of our Junior School girls have been selected for Scottish National Squads. Religious Education There is a strong Christian ethos throughout the school. Curricular lessons focus on teaching pupils about Christianity and other world religions in a wide sense. As a Catholic foundation we participate in Mass and celebrate Feast Days as a community. During the school year a number of special events (e.g. food for the homeless,) and issues (e.g. Shoebox Blythewood) are included in the curriculum. There is a strong emphasis on helping others through raising funds for charities; most recently Mary’s Meals, the Scottish based charity. We support a variety of charities.

Study and Homework At Kilgraston, our major aims in setting study are to raise achievement, to increase motivation and to develop independent study skills. Study is an important part of a pupil’s education. It reinforces their learning, develops skills and enhances progress. It also creates good learning habits for the future. Study may take the form of written work, but it may also be research, memorising or reading. Pupils should have learned the skills required previously in class. All study should be completed to the best of the pupil’s ability. Pupils are responsible for ensuring that they keep their study diaries up to date and for handing in work at the correct time. Pupils in Reception – Lower 2 will receive help from their teacher when filling in their diaries. Homework diaries should be filled in each day by pupils and checked regularly (and signed) by parents. As a guide (but there will be variance dependent on task etc.); Study may be set either for each night or may be set a week in advance by some teachers relative to the study task. Teachers aim to ensure that every pupil will have the right amount of nightly study; please let your daughter’s class teacher know if she is spending appreciably more or less than the allocated time.

A record of homework set in each subject will be kept by staff to ensure that there is an overall balance each term. Individual project work and research may be ongoing over the term, which should be done in short, regular sessions, taking time to find relevant materials and using libraries or the internet. Pupils attending Study Club (4.30-5.30 p.m.), may have completed most of their homework before they reach home, so should be encouraged to read before bedtime. If a pupil is unable to complete study, a short note of explanation in the homework diary will alert the teacher to help with particular problems and to excuse the pupil. Pupils will gradually take responsibility for their own learning and develop the skills, attitudes, and confidence necessary to study effectively throughout their lives. They also need to develop good organisational skills such as time-management, prioritising and meeting deadlines. Pupils receive support from school for study in the form of personal guidance, access to resources, organisational support and study skills advice. It is recognised that many pupils have out-of-school commitments during the week, such as sports or music activities, whilst others have long journeys home. Study is an integral part of the school week and it is hoped that girls will aim for a balance of homework and other commitments. Study should be in a regular place, with a clearly defined work surface, well-lit and clear from distractions to develop the habit of focused study. Additional help given by parents should only enable the pupil to do the work set. Generally, it does not help the pupil if the work she hands in is largely not her own or has already been corrected. Positive help could be verbal, to elicit answers by means of question or example.

Reporting and Parents’ Evenings We have two parents’ evenings per academic year. Junior School parents have parents’ meetings just before half term in their first term in their new class, so you can ask questions and learn more about their progress. You will be informed of the dates of parents’ evenings and appointments may be made through our Junior School office. As a parent you will be issued with a username and password to enable you to access the Parent Portal where you will be able to view your daughter’s report. You will receive an email informing you when this is available, and you can then log in to review. If you have any difficulty logging on, please email [email protected] or [email protected] There are very few children who are good at everything and we aim to record the efforts of those who have given their very best throughout the term. A pupil achieving a satisfactory in achievement and an excellent in effort is experiencing some difficulty with a subject but continues to work very hard. We hope that this system, in conjunction with a detailed written report, will enable parents to fully understand their child’s progress at all stages. There may also be a comment on recent test or exam results. If the class teacher, Head of Support for Learning or Head of Junior School feel there is a significant concern, academic or pastoral, we will inform parents. In addition, after consultation, subject teachers may communicate directly with parents if they are concerned about a pupil’s progress. Support for Learning. Many children experience a short-term difficulty requiring some additional support in their school work and the Learning Support department can assist in making such provision. For some children and young people however, additional support in teaching and learning may be required over a longer period. The Head of Support for Learning works alongside colleagues to support pupils who require more that the first stage of intervention. A member of staff will make a referral to Support for Learning with an outline of their concerns. Support for Learning can make provision through in-class support, individual tuition, or access to technology such as Dragon software. Alternative assessment arrangements can also be put in place. At the beginning of each academic year the Head of Support for Learning will publish an Additional Support Needs register which will be available to all members of staff. Details of any extra support are also recorded as a Personal Learning Plan. This process is reviewed throughout the school year. ESOL: English for Speakers of other Languages. The aims of the ESOL department is to enable bilingual students to develop their English skills and as far as possible fully access the curriculum. ESOL staff support girls throughout the school within their year groups and if necessary working with individual girls who may be needing extra support. The ESOL department works closely with teaching and residential staff to advise them on strategies to support bilingual students in all aspects of school life.

Pastoral Care The Kilgraston Pastoral system works in conjunction with all curriculum areas to ensure that a whole child perspective is maintained at all times, which is fundamental to the ethos of the school. The pastoral care team aims to encourage a happy environment, where the girls can flourish in an atmosphere that includes tolerance, integrity, openness, and thoughtfulness. This is regarded as the key to the wellbeing and academic success of all the girls, to allow them to develop to their full potential, whatever their academic ability. We wish to create a community, which reflects the ethical and moral framework of our Sacred Heart Foundation. We wish to support and encourage better understanding of other people from all over the world. Our ethos is caring, honest and hardworking, and supportive to all which helps the girls to grow in confidence and develop independence throughout their years with us. Each girl has a class teacher who meets them every day at registration and on a Friday morning for a dedicated tutor meeting. We intend to make sure that all our new pupils settle in quickly and know where to go, who to turn to for advice and that they feel supported. Our PSHE programme is taught as a discrete subject, integral to the health, personal and social wellbeing of each of our students and an essential part of the curriculum. We aim to deliver an enjoyable, relevant programme that enhances student's self-esteem and independence, preparing them with the necessary communication and social skills needed in life to make well-informed, safe, and healthy choices. We also encourage them to be responsible and active members of the community. Kilgraston School Rules The rules and regulations within the school are there to encourage the highest possible standards of behaviour. They are underpinned by each member of the school community taking responsibility for their own actions and having respect and concern for both people and property, thus enabling Kilgraston to run as smoothly as possible. There is an expectation that Kilgraston pupils will behave in such a way which graces the school at all times. The Headmistress reserves the right to investigate and to take action on reports of unlawful, violent, or indecent behaviour by a pupil or any other behaviour which damages the reputation of the school, even if such behaviour takes place outside the school premises and or outwith school time. Kilgraston pupils share responsibility with the Headmistress and all members of staff to maintain high standards of discipline and decorum within the school at all times including on the way to and from school and at all events connected with the school. It is the right of every pupil: To feel safe at school To be able to learn to the best of one's ability To be treated with dignity and respect To have one's efforts recognised and acknowledged It is the responsibility of every pupil: To respect others within the school community To obey the rules of the school To accept that by breaking the rules they have made a choice and must accept the consequences of their actions.

Behaviour We promote good behaviour in the Junior School, with positive behaviour management. Positive behaviour, educational achievement, personal endeavour and awareness of those around should be rewarded through House points and Merits as well as by general comment from staff at the time. Merits are totalled for the individual and certificates awarded. House points are added to the House total. Inappropriate behaviour in class is dealt with by class teacher. A yellow and red card system is used. A warning is given, then if inappropriate behaviour continues a yellow card is given. If a pupil receives three yellow cards, a red card is issued and a detention given. If serious, referral of the incident should be made to Head of the Junior School who will also inform the parents. Teachers from the Senior School will notify the class teacher of any incident and punishment given. An individual, serious offence will be referred to the class teacher or boarding mistress followed by Head of the Junior School, the Deputy Head (Pastoral) and the Principal. Consistent or continuous misbehaviour should be referred to the Head of the Junior School who will discuss the matter with the pupils involved and decide on a suitable course of action. The class teacher will be kept informed. Playground misbehaviour or unkindness should be dealt with by the person observing the incident and the class teacher will be made aware as quickly as possible. General Expectations All pupils will conduct themselves in a civilised, respectful manner at all times. The utmost care must be taken of personal property which should be clearly named, including sports and electrical equipment. Pupils are responsible for their own property at all times. Anyone who loses property must report the loss to their tutor. Any lost property that is found should be handed into the school secretary. The utmost care must be taken at all times of school property, fabric, and furnishings. Any damage caused must be reported immediately by the person responsible. Anyone coming across damage to the school should also report this to a member of staff. Any pupil using the school's computing facilities must act responsibly in accordance with the ICT Acceptable Use Policy. The use of iPads in the school are for academic purposes and are not to be used for social networking. Sanctions will be applied for improper use. These are explained in the above policy. Full details of the school's Discipline Policy and sanctions can be found on the website. Religious Observance and Assembly Kilgraston is a Sacred Heart School (the only Roman Catholic Boarding School in Scotland) but we have pupils from all denominations. Short assemblies are held twice a week in the Junior School and there are occasional longer whole school services. We meet to say prayers, sing hymns and celebrate our successes and achievements. Sometimes assemblies are presented by children, sometimes we share examples of outstanding work, but we gather as a community to prepare ourselves for the day ahead. Parents are invited to attend special assemblies. We join the Senior School in Chapel on Mondays for an assembly and Upper 3 classes also join them on Thursdays. Mobile Phones Mobile phones, tablets, kindles and i-watches are brought to school at the owner’s risk. They must be handed into the Junior School office on arrival at school and will be kept safely there during the school day and they may be collected on departure from school at the end of the school day. They may only be used at appropriate times to make essential outgoing calls. We have a Policy on Acceptable use of ICT Facilities (including Mobile Phones) which can be found on the school website and which will be explained to all pupils on the first day of the new academic year. We would be grateful if parents could reinforce these guidelines and help us promote good sense and safety.

Security In the interest of the safety of the children in our care, the school has drawn up a security protocol as follows: • Visitors or parents must report to Reception unless picking up or dropping off at the

normal times. • Visitors outside these times must wear a Visitor Badge issued at Reception and

return it as they leave. • The Junior Years building is kept locked throughout the day and a member of staff

will meet visitors when notified by Reception. There is a doorbell on the Junior Years door and an entry code which is only available to Kilgraston pupils, staff, parents, and approved visitors.

• If you are arranging for someone else to collect your child please inform the class teacher at the beginning of the day and ensure that your child knows of the arrangements too. If an emergency occurs during the day, please phone the Junior School Secretary and explain your arrangements to her. She will pass the information on to your child and the class teacher.

Kilgraston House System We have four Houses within the school encompassing pupils from Reception to Upper 6. These are: Arran Green Inchcolm Red Kinnoull Purple Moncreiffe Yellow This brings all members of our school community together for sporting, musical and drama competitions, and events. They meet on a regular basis to catch up on what each year group has been doing and organise social and charitable events. New pupils are allocated to Houses randomly, but we keep sisters in the same house. We appoint Junior School House Captains each year. They are elected by the older Junior School pupils and staff. House Captains will lead their House in competitions and challenges throughout the year and will set a good example to them. They will encourage all members of their house to wear correct uniform and abide by school rules. HEAD and DEPUTY HEAD GIRLS, PREFECTS In Upper 3 girls have the opportunity to become a Junior Years prefect which allows girls to develop their leadership qualities and commitment to service. Heading our prefect team is our Junior School Head Girl and her Deputy and they are integral to supporting the running of the Junior School. These girls are expected to set the highest

examples of excellent behaviour and good citizenship, support other Junior School pupils and encourage pupils to participate fully in school life. They will be asked to do formal tasks such as votes of thanks and to make presentations to visitors. Prefects may be appointed with special duties such as Library, Charities, Environmental issues and will undertake a number of duties within the Junior School. BFG’s Our BFG’s (Big Friendly Girls) play an important role in mentoring younger girls within the school. They act as older ‘sisters’ whom younger pupils can turn to for advice on school routines, receive help on academic or social matters or just to chat to. Our BFG’s and prefects pay particular attention to those who are new to the school. Social Events The school has links with some of the local schools and in particular Merchiston Castle Boys School in Edinburgh. Upper 3 pupils have the opportunity to attend socials that are arranged between our two schools and events such as ceilidhs and our seasonal parties are very popular. Health and wellbeing Health and Wellbeing is an important aspect of school life and to support this we have the services of a school nurse, a school doctor who provides a morning surgery every Thursday for our boarding pupils, a Child Protection Officer who is available at all times and members of staff who are trained as First Aiders and Mental Health First Aiders. It is important to inform the school nurse of any specific medical needs your daughter has, and parents of new pupils will be asked to complete a confidential medical questionnaire to keep the school up to date on any relevant health problems. Various vaccinations and boosters are available to girls at differing ages and information about these will be sent out at the appropriate time. We also have an excellent Independent Listening Service ROWAN where pupils can make appointments to meet our School Counsellor. These can be arranged through the Head of Pastoral Care and Boarding.

1. Parents should contact Sister if their daughter requires medication during school hours and she will arrange for the pupil to be given medicine in the Infirmary.

2. Teachers are not permitted to dispense prescription medicines to pupils. Please inform the class teacher if your child is on medication.

3. Asthma inhalers should be left with the class teacher if the pupil is capable of self-administration.

If a pupil is taken ill during the day she will be cared for until parents can collect her. In the rare event of an accident or injury occurring during the day, Sister or First Aiders will take the necessary action and parents will be contacted as soon as possible. Please do not send your child to school:

• following an illness until a full recovery has been made or • if your child has been ill during the night • if you suspect your child has contracted an infectious illness • if they have vomited or had diarrohea

Headlice are an unfortunate fact of life in any school. Please help us to keep this under control by checking your child’s hair regularly (full boarders will be checked in school) by

using a fine toothed, bug buster type comb. If they are discovered, please treat your child before returning them to school and inform the school. Child Protection and Wellbeing At Kilgraston, we appreciate the trust and confidence with which parents put their children in our charge. Kilgraston has a Child Protection Policy which is supported by the National Guidance for Child Protection (Scotland) 2014, Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014, Perth and Kinross Child Protection Policies and SCIS Child Protection Policy 2015. This can be found on the school website. The Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 provides a framework for all agencies who work to support young people and their families. GIRFEC (Getting It Right for Every Child) is a consistent way for people to work with children and young people. The GIRFEC approach helps all those who are supporting girls in Kilgraston focus on what makes a positive difference for them - and how they can act to deliver these improvements. Getting It Right for Every Child is being threaded through many of our existing policies, practices, protocols strategies and governance. Kilgraston School Council Pupils at Kilgraston have opportunities to present their views and opinions through Kilgraston Junior School Pupil Council and surveys. Regular meetings are held each term and each part of the Junior School is represented on the Junior School Pupil Council. Kilgraston Parents Association Representatives from the Junior and Senior School are on the Parents Association. They have regular termly meetings and support the school through organising and supporting school events. They also run the school second hand uniform shop. The Kilgraston Association All alumnae automatically become members of the Association. Pupils are invited to Past Pupil Receptions, Reunions and are welcome to call in at any time. Uniform and Equipment List Pupils are encouraged to take a pride in their uniform and the way in which it is worn. Please note that jewellery is not allowed (this includes items such as friendship bracelets, hair extensions, colourful hair bands or clasps,) with the exception of plain silver or gold stud earrings and/ or simple cross. Shoulder length hair should be tied back using hair bands, ribbons or hair bobbles. These should be plain black, dark blue or dark green or tartan to match the kilt. Girls are asked to wear white ankle socks until October Mid-Term and wear navy tights from October Mid-Term to Easter Break. During Summer Term all girls are expected to wear white ankle socks. Girls are required to wear a school sash during formal school assemblies, masses and prize- giving. This sash should match the girl’s kilt and please provide two safety pins and, if wished, a Sash Clasp. We strongly recommend that valuable items are not brought to school as loss or breakage can be distressing. On occasions when something is brought to show others in class, please ensure it is given to the form teacher for safekeeping. All items of uniform (unless otherwise stated) are available on the Schoolblazer website, a link to which can be found on the Kilgraston School website. Pupils are allowed to wear kilts in their family tartan if they wish.

EQUIPMENT All exercise books, paper, textbooks and art materials are provided by the school; however, pupils should be equipped with a complete set of writing/maths equipment at the start of each term as follows. Items should be named or marked in an identifiable way.

Boarding Information

Starting at boarding school for the first time is an exciting and sometimes daunting experience for girls and their parents. Any worries can be talked over with our Head of Boarding, Mrs McFadden. Butterstone is a busy and happy house where girls can relax, have fun and take part in the many weekend and after school activities on offer. There are occasions when day-girls wish to board for a night or two. We encourage this, and a scale of charges is available from the Bursar. One week’s notice is advised to ensure there is space in the boarding dormitories. To accommodate the needs of younger children, the Junior School offers boarders a choice of Full, Weekly or Flexi boarding. Rates are available from the Bursar’s office. A boarding application form must be completed and handed to Reception or Ms Trish Stack, The Junior School Secretary. Residential Areas Junior School pupils boarding at Kilgraston are housed together in Butterstone. There is a Common Room with a television, DVD etc. and these areas are used for informal and formal meetings as well as areas where the girls can relax together. It has a kitchen with facilities for making hot drinks and snacks. Younger girls are, of course, supervised in the kitchen area. Supervision Each area is supervised by members of our residential staff throughout the day and at weekends. In addition to fully qualified staff in our residential areas, we have at least four GAP students who act as Boarding Assistants (from countries ranging from France, Mexico and Germany to South Africa and Australia). Evening Routine Boarders are required to study each evening, and this is supervised by the residential team. Most girls do some kind of extra-curricular activity in the evenings and at the weekend. Girls who have to miss some study because of these activities are expected to make it up in their own time. Time for extra study is allocated for this during the weekends and in the evening. Weekdays after normal study, include free time when girls may be in their areas or in their common rooms. The school Chaplain is also available in the evening and runs very popular reflection and night prayer sessions in each of the boarding areas. Bed times vary according to age groups. The residential team say 'goodnight' to all girls individually and put out their lights. This may also be a time for a quiet chat. Half Term, Long Weekends and Mini weekend We expect all girls to go home or to a guardian during the holidays. On exeat weekends there are no matches or formal activities so we encourage girls to go home or to stay with a friend. It is optional however and there will be a boarding team on duty throughout. At other weekends we encourage boarders to stay in school and participate in our excellent weekend activities programme. Outings The school organises weekend and evening trips to lectures, concerts etc. Day girls are more than welcome to join in these events. At the conclusion, day girls should inform the staff member in charge of the event as they leave. Parents will have been notified of the appropriate time of return. A member of staff will ensure the girls are supervised and give information to parents if the trip has been delayed.

Outings and Permissions At the beginning of term parents are asked to sign a form giving their daughter permission to take part in school organised activities including weekend activities and socials with other schools. Often girls will be asked to spend the weekend with friends and in this instance the Residential Mistress will contact parents of both parties for permission and details. Laundry Junior School boarders send all laundry on a rota system. Boarding Committee Boarding Committee meets every term with representatives chosen from each residential area. All our boarders are registered with the Taymount Practice in Perth where appointments with the GP and the Practice Nurse can be arranged on a daily basis if necessary by members of the Residential Team. We also have excellent links to external professional agencies. The Residential Team are also qualified first aiders and there is someone on duty twenty-four hours a day throughout term time. Specialist appointments can also be arranged. Dental treatments and check-ups should be conducted during the school holidays whenever possible. Any chaperoned medical appointments held outside the School will be charged separately on the school account at the end of each term. All new boarding pupils will have health interviews with the school nurse along with an appointment with the school doctor if necessary. Boarding Requirements

Kilgraston catering School catering is run by Inspire Company. All enquiries regarding special diets etc. should be addressed to Mr D McDonald, Catering Manager at [email protected]. Junior School pupils eat in the dining room alongside Senior School pupils and staff. Insurance All pupils in the school are covered by the SCIS Personal Accident Insurance Scheme for permanent disability or death by accident. The cost of this is cover is included in the Spring Term fee bill. The School’s insurance policy only covers the loss of clothing and personal effects in the event of fire and theft if ‘breaking and entering’ the premises can be proven. However, the value of the cover is limited, namely £250 for day pupils and £1000 for boarders (limited any one article £100). Such cover is subject to a £30 excess on each and every claim and specifically excludes cash and pedal cycles.

In common with other schools in the private sector, the Governors cannot accept responsibility for loss, theft, or accidental damage to pupils’ personal belongings, including phones, tablets, cameras, musical instruments, and calculators. It is strongly recommended that the parents extend their existing household contents policy, or take out a new policy, on an ‘All Risks’ basis to cover their child’s personal effects while at school.

It should also be noted that the school does not run a School Fee Remission Scheme and parents should make their own arrangements to take out cover for absence if they so wish. If you have any questions about insurance, you should seek advice from the Bursar.
