June 2016

It’s with a bit of sadness and maybe a little bit of relief that I finish my term as ASHRAE Atlanta Chapter President. I can say that this experience has been challenging, rewarding and everything in between. One of the biggest lessons I learned while president is that you can only be as successful as the people that are supporting you. I want to say a huge thank you to all of the volunteers, chairs, co-chairs, board members, and officers. I couldn’t have done it without you! We had some challenges early in the year and the way that the chairs, board, and general membership stepped up to support me and more importantly the chapter, was impressive. It makes me proud to volunteer and be part of such a great organization.

It has been a relatively quiet month for the local chapter. However, for the national society the complete opposite can be said. The annual conference was held in St Louis from June 25-29 and was full of seminars, certification classes, committee meetings, general business sessions and most importantly social events. If you have never been to an ASHRAE Annual Conference, I highly recommend it.

Don’t forget the ASHRAE Region 4 Chapter Regional Conference which will be held at Lake Lanier Island Resort August 11-13. There will be numerous events and learning opportunities. Registration is open here: http://www.ashraeatlanta.org/CRC_Registration/ . You can also go here for sponsorship opportunities: http://www.ashraeatlanta.org/event-850135

Thanks again for all of the support during my year as chapter president. It was a pleasure to serve the Atlanta Chapter and its members. I look forward to continuing my involvement in the chapter for a long time to come.

Three ASHRAE Professional Certifications Earn ANSI Accreditation

ATLANTA – Three ASHRAE certifications have received accreditation from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), joining the High Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP) certification that was accredited last year. Accreditation was approved May 23 for ASHRAE’s Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP), Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) and Commissioning Process Management Professional (CPMP) under International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/ International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 17024:2012.

“Obtaining accreditation from ANSI speaks to the credibility of ASHRAE’s certification program, while demonstrating to the industry the value of those who hold the certifications,” David Underwood, P.Eng., CPMP, said. “As a holder of ASHRAE’s CPMP, I am grateful for the added value that comes from ANSI approval.”

The certifications that were accredited are: Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP)

o The BEAP certification program validates competency to audit, assess and analyze residential, commercial and industrial building energy use and develop related recommendations. Certified BEAPs also qualify to perform In Operations ratings for ASHRAE’s Building Energy Quotient (bEQ) program.

Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP).o The BEMP certification program validates competency to model new and existing building

and systems with the full range of physics, and evaluate, select, use, calibrate and interpret the results of energy modeling software where applied to building and systems energy performance and economics. Certified BEMPs also qualify to perform As Designed ratings for ASHRAE’s Building Energy Quotient (bEQ) program.

Commissioning Process Management Professional (CPMP) o The CPMP certification program validates competency to develop and manage the whole

building commissioning process with the owner.

More information about the program can be found at www.ashrae.org/certification.

June 2016 Edition

Members Corner:

Well it’s time again to cool off in the swimming pool, lake, or sea if you are nearby. It’s great that our homes, offices, cars, planes, and other indoor dwellings are air conditioned. Imagine how hard it was to live over a 100 years ago under this weather without these marvelous systems that we specify, install, and maintain for a living. If you are starting your career on the HVAC industry then I’ll welcome you and encourage you to get the most out of our ASHRAE book which can help you to become the expert that everyone looks for. A zillion thanks for those members who are retired since you paved the way on this never ending road with blood, sweat, and tears but always having fun on thru this path.

This month I’ll dare to go over a sneaky subject: “complaining”’. Have you notice that most of the persons that surround you do master this sneaky habit. Yes, it’s a habit that starts with the first gripe and escalates as things go in the “wrong” direction. The thing is that normally those who complain have gotten used to do it so they rather spend their precious time complaining than doing something about it or simply moving on. Do yourself a favor as time is money and money comes and goes but time does not so next time you hear someone complaining encourage them to do something about it or simply to move on.

Promote your skills:

Do you have a job experience or unusual application to share? Then send me a paragraph or two and I’ll add it to the next newsletter so the Chapter can learn from your experiences.

HELP, HELP, HELP!!!Our Chapter needs volunteers to keep helping you to achieve your goals. We have open positions for Chapter committee Chairs, Co-Chairs, Assistants and other related tasks. This is great opportunity to learn for free or show your leadership and management skills which are quite a valuable asset in our market. Those interested can contact our chapter president at [email protected]

Now, let’s extend a warm welcome to the following new members:

Mr Guangyao Shao Mr Paul Ruland Mr Michael Clair Parson

Mr Kenneth Barkovich Mr Chris Berry Mr James Reeves Mr Gary M Holder

A farewell note…Well folks the time has come to move on. I enjoyed being helping people like you for the past three (3) years as the Chapter Membership Promotion Chair. Thanks for your support and encouragement thru this time and special thanks to those who really read this section. Anyway, I wish you the best and for now let’s welcome Brendan Gardes from Newcomb & Boyd who will be your “MP” guy from next month onward.

Keep yourself cool and till next newsletter,

Sincerely,Pedro PachecoMP Chair, Atlanta Chapter [email protected]
