Everyone who has participated in one or more 4-H projects are encouraged to do a record book. It is an integral part of the 4-H program. You will hear/see references to an “on-line” record book system. However the online system is just a place to create and store your record book forms. It is NOT required that you use that system. And, whether you use it or not, record books will still need to be printed and submitted in paper format. If you plan on turning in a book this year please make sure you are using the right forms. Remember record books are required to apply for the County Star Awards. 1st Place record books advance to district competition, and seniors who place 1st at district advance on to State. If you need help with your record book, please call us. There is also a lot of support online on the Texas 4-H website. If you have any questions please call the Extension Office at (979)567-2308.

Below is his bio and what he looks for:
Josh Brockman I grew up showing livestock and judging livestock throughout high school and working at my parents 5,000 acre farm. After high school, I attended Blinn Jr. College in Brenham, and was a Member of the 2008 All-American Jr. Collegiate Livestock Judging Team, before finishing my college career at Texas A&M. I currently live in Montgomery, Texas and own and operate a Show pig operation, as well as, have multiple livestock friends and family that I assist with their project throughout the year. When evaluating livestock, specifically market hogs, there are many factors to consider, and all play a role in creating the "closest to ideal". For me, there are a few things that mean a lot to me, partially because of how I was taught, and the kind that work for me. I like hogs that are heavy structured, and big footed and boned, but not to the point of being course jointed. Animals that balance, being tall shouldered, high headed, and level hipped are also very important traits to me, but most importantly, hogs that can "go" and that are sound structured, square built, and athletic. In terms of muscle and body, I like hogs that are very fresh in their muscle shape, and not to raw(hard), and hogs that have good turn to their rib and fill to their body, but not excessive and proportional. I like width, but not to the point of making hogs toe-in at the ground and/or bow out at their hock. They need to be square and comfortable in their joints. Finally, in terms of presentation, livestock should all "look like show animals". They should have great skin and hair, and be trained to show the same. As far as barrows or gilts, and weight, I have no preference.
