Dear Congregants and Friends ~

On Sunday, April 30, 2017, I was asked to speak, along with several other clergy from different faith traditions, at an event, titled, “Rally for Immigrant Justice” in North Andover. I first spoke, in my presentation, about the treatment of “the stranger” and of “immigrants” from a Jewish perspective, a subject about which I hope to say more as part of the adult education program that I hope to lead in the coming month. I next spoke at the Rally about another important Jewish value, one that I believe is of critical importance in our nation today. It is this subject that serves as the basis for this article.

The value to which I am referring, while never an easy one for me to fulfill, has become even more challenging for me, and I believe for others, to live out in today’s often polarized social and political climate. The following anecdote will hopefully explain how challenging this particular value can be.

I spent a good part of this past week at a SPLC Board Meeting in Montgomery, AL. There, I got to

hear firsthand, among other things, (1) about the substantial increase over the past 6 to 8 months in the vitriol and the number of anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-Jewish [I wrote in my column last month about the Jewish woman being “trolled” online and attacked by an alt-right group], and anti-people of color hate groups; (2) personal stories from a number of immigrant families and of members of the LGBTQ and Islamic communities, whose lives are now consumed with fear; etc.

On the plane ride back to Boston, I found myself becoming irate with, if not demonizing, those

responsible for these acts of hate, prejudice, and intimidation. Fortunately, I suddenly remembered a story I had heard, involving Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, during his tenure as a professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Rabbinical School that I attended, in New York City.

Rabbi Heschel began his class, one day, by telling his students that there was one commandment, one

teaching in the Hebrew Bible that he wished, more than any other, had not been included in the sacred texts. His students naturally asked what that teaching was, and he responded, “Leviticus 19: to love thy neighbor as thyself”. His students were, understandably, shocked and momentarily speechless, for his students, the entire school, knew of his reputation for being, not only a great teacher and scholar, but an admired and respected humanitarian and human rights and social justice advocate.

Seeing the shock and dismay on their faces, Rabbi Heschel quickly explained to his students that the

problem was not with this teaching from the Torah, but with his own human imperfection and shortcomings, noting that “while this teaching is for me, perhaps, the most important of the 613 teachings and laws found in the Bible, and while I do my best each day to carry it out, I find that I am constantly falling short of the mark, judging and hurting others on almost a daily basis. It is because I find this commandment so challenging to fulfill that I said what I did.”

Yes, for me, perhaps for you, “to love our neighbor”, even when our neighbor’s position may be

inconsistent with ours on a matter of great importance to us; even when our neighbor’s opinion on an important social justice issue is in conflict with mine, is, as it was for Rabbi Heschel, one of the most difficult of Judaism’s 613 commandments for me to fulfill on a consistent basis.

Whenever I am in search of guidance, or feel a bit overwhelmed, I first turn to the teachings and

wisdom of the Jewish tradition. Then, I sometimes turn to the teachings of another great 20th century prophet (Continued on page 9)

CBI Cares – Seeking Triple C Drivers

Triple C does not just stand for Chocolate Chip Cookies anymore! CBI Cares is hoping to begin a new program called Triple C – CBI Cares Conveyance.

CBI Cares has been successfully providing food for CBI community members when in need. Now we would like to try to expand to provide transportation for those in need. To be able to do this, we require a network of volunteer drivers that we can call on when one of our members needs a ride to an appointment, grocery store or for doing a few errands. We are going to call this CBI Cares Conveyance, or Triple C. If you are not already a CBI Cares Mitzvah Mensch, become one now! Please let me know by email (address below) if you are willing to be on a list of Triple C volunteers. There is no immediate obligation – you will only be tapped for any particular “Mitzvah Mission” of driving “should you choose to accept it”. And for those of you who would prefer not to drive, please think about using the Triple C - CBI Cares Conveyance if you need it. The target date for starting this service is July 2017.

Rabbi Mandell’s Lach L’cha Column, continued from page 2

(Rabbi Heschel being the first), the Rev. Martin Luther King. The following teaching was offered by Rev. King, when still a young man in his 20’s, not long after his home had been fire bombed by the KKK in Montgomery, AL:

“It is evil that we are seeking to defeat, not the persons responsible for the evil. Those of us, who struggle against racial injustice [or any other form of injustice or discrimination] must come to see that the basic tension is not between the races. …the tension in this city is not between white people and Negro people. The tension is at bottom between justice and injustice, between the forces of light and the forces of darkness….we are out to defeat injustice and not white persons, who may happen to be unjust.

At the center of nonviolence stands the principle of love….to retaliate with hate and bitterness would do nothing but intensify the hate in the world….nonviolence is based on the conviction that the universe is on the side of justice….the belief that God is on the side of truth and justice….” Rev King’s teaching was a poignant reminder to me that I am to at least strive “to love my neighbor as

myself,” even when I find myself strongly disagreeing with and in strong opposition to my neighbor’s views and values. Still finding myself having a long way to go to carry out this teaching, I well understand what Rabbi Heschel might have been feeling, when speaking to his class.

I have come to appreciate, however, that just making the effort, even when I fall short of the mark, has

its own inherent rewards. I would like to close with another teaching by Rev. King, a teaching which reinforces, for me, the

wisdom of his previous teaching: “hatred and bitterness can never cure the disease of fear; only love can do that. Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illumines it.” Wishing your loved ones and you a safe, enjoyable, and fulfilling summer! Rabbi Howard Mandell 978.775.4011, [email protected]

MITZVAH MENSCHES COOK FOR CBI CARES

Thank you to the Mitzvah Mensches who had a wonderful and productive cooking party in the CBI kitchen on May 17. Gayle Tye, Ellen Brody, Robin Pike, Judith Chaloff, and Leslie Silverstein cooked up a storm and made some delicious minestrone soup, lasagna, and brownies. These CBI Cares Mitzvah Mensches branched out to also include making the lasagnas for the CBI Shavuot event.

Most of the food we cooked, however, will be for CBI members who might be in need over the next few months. If you close your eyes, you can practically smell the luscious aromas of this comfort food! It’s in the CBI freezer now, just waiting to be delivered to CBI members in need. Please let Amy Sherr or Leslie Silverstein know if you are under the weather or have some other circumstance and you would benefit from some of this tasty food. We will arrange for someone to deliver the food to you, and all you need to do is defrost it, heat it (if needed) and enjoy some comfort food that is sure to make you feel better!

We will have another cooking party at the end of the summer, so if you weren’t able to volunteer for this one, please let us know if you are interested in the next one by emailing us at [email protected]. Lovingkindness is alive and well at CBI as CBI Cares for our entire CBI community!

Leslie Silverstein Chairperson, CBI Cares

It is a tree of life to those who hold fast to it!

Many special occasions in the lives of the members of our Congregation are recorded on the leaves of the Tree of Life in the Sanctuary. There is room for more! To honor the special people and events in the life of your family, please consider having a leaf engraved with a personalized sentiment. For more information on how you can preserve your memories, please contact Amy in the office at [email protected] or 978.474.0540.
