THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME

In a few days I will be leading a group of 17 high school students from our synagogue on a trip of a lifetime to Israel. The group will also be accompanied by Stuart Brody and Jill Kripke who will help chaperone our large and enthusiastic group. During the two years that I have been your Hazzan, I have been fortunate to get to know many of the students well. In addition I was privileged to work with them for their impressive Confirmation ceremony that took place on May 5. The twelve Confirmands’ presentation was outstanding, conveyed with confidence and poise. The time we spent together cemented a much deeper bond between us which I know will grow from our pilgrimage to Israel together. For most it will be their first trip to Israel, one that has the potential to be a life altering experience. It should strengthen students’ Jewish identity and solidify their relationship with Israel. My first trip to Israel was while in college in Cape Town, South Africa. I was chosen to join participants from around the world for a summer course of study at Jerusalem’s Machon Greenberg. This experience is still vivid in my mind and changed my life forever, helping strengthen my commitment to serve our People as a kli kodesh, a Hazzan and teacher. Highlights of B’nai Israel’s trip include Caesaria, the Galilee and Lake Kineret, The Golan Heights, olive oil making, Israel Defense Force border patrol, Grottos of Rosh Hanikra, and Jerusalem with Shabbat service at the Kotel. A highlight will be a visit to our Toledo Federation Partnership Region in Akko, with its Crusader fortress and working gallows from the British Mandate period. This trip is particularly timely in light of predictions from Israel trip organizers that this could be a season of historically low teenager travel to Israel, particularly considering this is a time when there are no major security concerns. The Jewish Weekly of April 26, 2013, reported a drop of up to 50% in American teen participation in Israel trips since 2000. This could be explained by the economic depression but also by the highly successful Birthright program which is available to college students and young adults. I feel that experiencing Israel as a teenager is more powerful than college age or as a young adult. Our group will participate in the Shabbat service on June 8 with an aliyah which is traditional before one visits Israel. You can also look forward to daily reports from the trip on my blog at www.cantorlichterman.com , as well as formal reports to our congregation and its affiliates after we return. The trip, which is the third from B’nai Israel, is made possible through generous support from the Sherwin and Naomi Kripke Israel Program Fund and we are deeply appreciative to the Kripke family for what we know will be an extraordinary life altering experience. Dear B’nai Israel Congregants, For many of us one of the most important parts of the services during the High Holy Days is the Yizkor Service on Yom Kippur. It is at that time when we turn our thoughts to our Loved Ones who have left this earth. We use this meaningful time to reflect upon their lives as well as the lives of all those who were members of our congregation, family and friends. In addition, we take the time to formally recognize the Martyrs of our people, most especially the Six Million who were murdered during the Holocaust. As part of this process we print a more permanent Yizkor Book which will contain the Yizkor Service, a list of those on the synagogue’s Memorial Plaques, and a memorial to the Six Million. Not only is this book long lasting, but anyone who wishes will be able to take it home for use during the year. I would urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity as a way of remembering those dearest to us, and at the same time, helping the congregation. Please use the order form below or email by August 14 to be included this year If you wish to maintain your entry from last year, you need do nothing. The synagogue will bill you. I look forward to greeting everyone during the High Holy Days. Shana Tova A Blessed Year, Hazzan Ivor Lichterman
