BUMP 'GrindEmailsTo all Bump Members, Volunteers and Sponsorsof theBump and Grind:

I wanted to thank all of the members of Bump,Volunteersat the race and theSponsors or once againorganizing and putting together one of the best races n theSoutheast. haveparticipated in many races across he thisareaby several different orgainzations and by far theBump and Grind race has the best organization, the mostvolunteer participation and the best sponsorparticipationthat I havewitnessed. want to especially thank those vol-unteershanding out the water bottles on the climb. Thanksagain for putting on such a greatevent.Dr. Scott L. and Lisa M. RobersonDestin, FLP.S. Let me be the first to vote for the Bump and GrindNorba National or 2003 ! !! !

Just wanted to say that you and the BUMP people did agreatjob on the race. It was well organized and I neverreally had any questions. Some of the other raceso 'vebeen confused and had to ask about the course ayout. Also, I believe that may be the frst race that went off ontime. Thc photo guy was a great iriea. Very sei, ioil ,io youget professional evel action photos during the race. I'vehad them at the start or finish by friends with their canonsbut never this level of professional pics. You also said to tell you if we thought of somethingthat might have made it a little better. I think a food vendoror two would have beel kind of nice or even a fund raisinggroup with food. By noon I was getting kind of hungryand unfortunately didn't have anything with me and I didn'twant to leaveto go get something and have to come back.I know at some of the Florida races, hey've had some ofthe local organizations ike boy scouts or girl scoutsorsome thing like that grilling hamburgersand hotdogs for afund raisers.Just a thought, not that important. Next year Iwill be sure to have food with me at the park.Again Good job.Mike Bobroski

I just wanted to thank you folks for doing such a great obthis weekend. BUMP and Grind is the premier event n thesouth.Bob Weatherly

Good Morning!Today is the day after the Bump and Grind. My 12 yr.old son and I enjoyed ourselves o the max! It was a great,well-organized event. We are frequent trail riders at OakMountain although we live in Elmore County nearWetumpka and are affiliated with the group that builds andmaintain trails at SwaybackBridge. However, we areimpressedby the professionalism and kindness of themernbersof the BUMP organization. We also feel a bit ofa senseof duty to be a part of BUMP since we enjoy theuse of the trails, and are aware of the volunteer efforts vitalto the success f a trail system. We would have some imitations to our participationdue in part to our location. Other obligations we have areBoy Scouts,SundaySchool,Wednesday ight churchyouth activities, and, of course,SwaybackBridge Trails. Are events such as trail maintenance,or group rides sched-uled on Saturday? We have many Friday afternoonsopenthat possibly would allow us to do sometrail work. Wecould probably make an occasional Wednesdaynight meet-ing, but not monthly. My concern is that we would havelimited usefulness o the BUMP organtzation. do notwant us to appear as someonenot carrying their weight.Could you use someonewith these imitations? Thanks.Sitrcereiy,Marvin CoxGraduateProgramAdvisorSchool of Leadership and Human ServicesSouthern Christian University

I just wanted to compliment BUMP on another greatrace Team Peggy had a really good time and was able togeta few riders on the podium. As always, the course wasin great shape, he volunteers were friendly, and the waterin the feed zone was cold! The medals given to the Sportwinners were VERY nice and rival any I've won atNORBA Nationals. Great -shirts, oo; cash or Sport sALWAYS nice!I have one suggestion--PlEASE speedup the timeframe of the awards ceremony. Some of us waited overtwo hours after we finished for awards. Maybe move thekids races o very first thing in the morning or immediatelyafter the Experts finish. Some of us have a long drivehome, and it is usually very hot out at the race venue. Theresults posting was MUCH better this year than in yearspast; they were up quickly and accurately.Once again, my compliments on a great race! This isalways one of my favorites of the year.Trish AlbertTeamPeggy

BUMPRldeReportsMentofi-e eliversbigon mud!by Paul BrookesOn SaturdayApril 27th, Demick, Mark, Margot, myself andDenise (a new arrival from California) went to Mentone. Theride up was uneventful, apart from getting lost trying to find thetrailhead - concentrating too much on a multitude of yard salesand antique markets in the area.

We startedat "the pocket", a 150ft waterfall, which actuallyhad water in it - the first BUMP visit it hasn't beendry. The rideup the 1000ft+ ctimb was pretty tough, not aidedby the 85degreeweather, l00Vo humidity, and roughnessof the terrain.Plenty of mud from the overnight rains had us walking atnumerouspoints. Upon reaching the top, we all restedat the"high point", a spectacularcliff overlook, and were rewardedbyclose encounterswith apafuof turkey-buzzards about 10ft away.We figured there was a nest nearby, since they were acting pret-ty defensively.

We then rode around at the top for a while, including a greatdownhill with plenty of slick rock. We got slightly lost again, then headed or the downhill that we'd all been anticipating. Itdid not disappoint, with plenty of near-misses,and only onemajor crashby Mark. The combination of wet treeroots andmud made for some interesting cornering with both wheels slid-ing. The lower parts of the descentmade for someserious speedand umping opportunities, ending with a stream-crossingandthe fire-road into the parking lot. All in all a great technical ride- 3.5 hours or 11 miles, and certainlyworth thedrive. On theway back we headed or a yard sale with dozensof old bikes, but nothing worthwhile - the house owner knew a little bit toomuch about bikes for there to be any real treasures here.

E1-t-remesf NightRidingby Denick SeysThe club's Friday night ride in Trussville was extreme.Hardwick and Inside Mike of CahabaCycles; Mitch and Julianof Bob's Bikes; and I met up to run the course a couple oftimes. This night ride was a lot like thosewe enjoyedover thewinter months, but warmer. A refreshing change. What was soextreme about it? The Equipment. Inside Mike was on a singlespeed, and Julian was on the other end of the bicycle spectrumwith his Giant AC 1 motorcycle-1ess-the-engine-big-tired-fullsuspensionbehemoth.The rest of us were in the middle onhardtails, soft tails, and full suspension.

First loop was clockwise, and beganwith one of cycling'sscariestmoments.Hitting the trail unpreparedand compoundedby nightfall. Hardwick had a flat on the grassy knoll minutesafter we started. He was tubeless, and had a flat. He is not rid-ing tubeless ires, he simply did not have a tube, or patchkit, orpump. As the other riders felt sorry for his situation, Mitchspottedhim a tube, and Mike had CO2 to fill it with. It wasacat-and-mouseide whereJulian would use he AC1'smomen-tum to come baneling up the rear on downhill sections n avaliant attempt to hang with the others. He did it very well con-sidering his ride weighed twice what Mike's uno speedoweighed.

We pressedon without any real hitch. Ran another ap in theoppositedirectionand called t a night. It was collectivelyagreedupon we should schedule his as a weekly event.Monday was the night meeting at/ ot 7:30 PM. Look for moreinformation soon, call Hardwick at CahabaCycles, or Mitch orJutianat Bob's Bikes if you are nterestedn the night rides.
